You need to look for information about animals from multiple sources, make sure to put your own biases aside, ask questions, and check the sources you find to make sure that they make sense.
My first experience with PETA was reading one of their pamphlets as a kid (sometime between the ages of 7 and 10). And while some of the things that they said in the pamphlet made sense, other things didn’t. For example, the pamphlet talked about cruelty in puppy mills, which I already knew about. But it also talked about wool farms, and my mom had already told me about how they get the wool and the potential consequences of not shearing a sheep, and what the pamphlet described was not at all how any of it works! So I knew that everything should be, at the very least, taken with a grain of salt. Of course, this was when I was very little and I didn’t know the true depth of crap that PETA does, but it was a good exercise in critical thinking skills for Little Me.
Part of respecting animals is understanding that they are different from us and from each other. You should know better than to try to care for a hamster the same way you care for a fish (and if you don’t know, now you know.) So it’s important to apply the rules for one animal to that animal, and if you don’t know what the rules are, look it up online or in a book (or both!) Don’t try to guess the rules for how an animal works based on a completely different animal, especially if you’re in charge of caring for animals, or if you’re talking to someone who is. Your dog is not an elephant. Nor is your dog a wolf. Yes, dogs are descended from wolves, and have some things in common with wolves, but dogs and wolves are different, often very different. Rats are not just big mice. Opposums are not just big rats. (Actually, an opposum is a marsupial, whereas rats and mice are rodents.) Basically, different animals are different.
You are not a monkey. Yes, we are related to monkeys, and there are many similarities between humans and monkeys, but there are also differences, often important ones. What you want and what a monkey wants may sometimes be the same, but it’s often very different. If a monkey tried to do some of the things we do, they would get hurt. If we tried to do some of the things monkeys can do, we would get hurt. That’s because humans are built differently from monkeys. And while some of the things humans do to monkeys truly are cruel, it’s important to know that some monkeys need to be in zoos. As long as the zoo is a good zoo, the monkeys there should be fine. Bad zoos should be shut down, and the animals should be rescued from there, and perhaps placed in a good zoo. Do your research on which zoos are good and which are bad. But remember to check your sources and think critically if you see something that doesn’t make sense.
Finally, the rules for how fictional animals work and how real animals work are often different. Now, this may seem obvious to some people, but even so, there is a lot to consider. Your favorite animal characters may have some things in common with their real-life counterparts, but there are bound to be important differences. For example, I like Sonic the Hedgehog. I know that Sonic is bigger than a real hedgehog, and a real hedgehog can’t deal with the kind of situations Sonic tends to find himself in. Also, real hedgehogs can’t eat chili dogs, are not blue, and don’t run at the speed of sound. But they do ball themselves up to protect themselves and their quills are a good self-defense system. So there is that. Actually, learning the similarities and differences between animal characters and their real-life counterparts can enhance your experience and enjoyment of both, in addition to the (less fun but more important) benefit to your knowledge of how animals actually work in the real world and why you shouldn’t try to apply the rules of fiction to reality. The rules can be very different.
Learn about animals. Guessing how animals work is not good enough. Learn how they work. Animals are very cool, and learning about animals can help you help them. Animals of many species are struggling right now, and it’s important to know what we should be doing to help them. Part of that is learning not only about similarities between humans and animals, but the differences, too. Another part of that is learning the differences between different types of animals. And yet another part is critical thinking about sources related to animals, and about our own understanding of animals. There’s a lot to learn, but if you don’t know something, don’t try to fill in the blanks with guesses. If your guesses are incorrect, the effects can be devastating.
honestly people are way more ignorant about the welfare of the animals than they think they are
animal rights activists are even worse regarding that, because instead of actually learning about what an animal needs and how it behaves they rely solely on how they *think* animals feel and need
and it's the reason why the public views feeding and interacting with wild animals as "being good and kindhearted :) " and keeping animals in zoos as "poor animals suffering in cramped cages >:( "
and it kills animals

I know I put this on the tags of that "horses will eat meat and eggs" post but like if that's all it takes for people to get freaked out and think horses are deranged then they should also be aware that almost all other herbivores do the exact same thing. It's actually seems to be way less common for herbivores to eat 100% only plants than it is for them to eat meat occasionally (koalas are one of the suspected few strict herbivores bc their diet and digestive system is so specialized). They don't go out searching/hunting for it like carnivores and omnivores, but if they stumble across some carrion or some eggs (or some particularly easy live meat), that's fair game, even moreso if other food is scarce.
Like,,,,Deer will eat dead fish and rabbits, and have been recorded eating dead deer also. They've also been recorded eating live hatchlings from bird nests. Rabbits will scavenge birds a lot, and also do scavenging cannibalism. Snowshoe hares have been recorded scavenging a lynx, which is ironically their main predator when alive. Elephants will eat fish. Cows will eat live birds just right of the ground, along with eggs they may find.
Horses aren't deranged bc they'll eat meat, they're deranged bc theyre like if you put the ghost of a psychically-sensitive victorian child into the body of a 1500 pound mammal.

I have not made made a generic hc post about the primarch in a LONG time. I miss it, and it's good for the warhammer tumblr ecosystem. So, without further waiting....
Primarch, and the absolutely shitty gifts they give each others for a White Elephants gift exchange
Roboute: A classic coffee mug (primarch sized!) Filled with sweets and a indestructible fancy fountain pen. The mug say "World Most Okay Dad" on it, and he joke that it apply to them all.
Lion: a stuffed bird. The number of eyes on it is vaguely unnerving. It's unclear wich way is the head suppose to go, and all agree that it's probably an awful mutant bird. Lion is too proud to admit that it's just a really shotty taxidermy he made himself.
Alpharius Omegon: They give a series of mysterious CD in blank case, wich is a very rare and hard to read format on most ship! It's the entire series of MLP:FiM, famous lost media in the 30th millenium.
Rogal: A thick, sturdy, and perfectly elegant multi bit screwdriver, with extra standard bits put in the handle. Give a proud presentation on it, explaining it's superior design and all it's ergonomic features. It's 45 min long.
Perturabo: it's a coupon that say "one (1) construction from me and my legion, free of complaining. Valid until the 31th millenium." It's the most popular gift of the night.
Corvus: slipper and kigurumi, all crow themed. They are *adorable*. Sadly, the size is a bit tight and vaguely indecent on the more muscular primarch.
Lorgar: a traditional colchian tea set, with hand dried craft teas! The set is beautiful, and the teas prove to be only mildly hallucinogenic.
Konrad: A very, VERY pretty embroidered set of throw pillow! They have delicate pattern of flower and nature imagery... And are made with human hair. Konrad is very proud of himself, and even more of the absolute bloody screaming his gift create when he explain it.
Sanguinius: put out by Konrad's gift, but he also made a pillow, but this one filled with his own feathers. Has surprising property against nightmare.
Vulkan: He was actually sweet, and brought homemade hot sauce, his mother's recipe! The problem is that the stuff is so strong, it's considered a dangerous chemical in most of the galaxy. Can be used as jet fuel.
Horus: Edible sexy underwear. Insist that whoever gets it has to wear it, and jokingly say that, if they are too shy, he can do a demonstration himself.
Mortarion: a succulent growing kit. Even his most dumbasses of brother should be able to keep a succulent alive, right? Doesn't mention that it's an highly invasive species that will colonise the entire ship of his poor victime.
Jaghatai: a foal. Yes, he carry a whole ass live animal to the gift exchange, and keep insisting that it's an appropriate gift. The horse is chewing on Magnus' hair.
Leman: Mad that he didn't think of bringing a puppy, but he has the most amazing looking collection of smoked salmon, caviar and preserved fish to offer.
Magnus: his patience is wearing thin, but he still offer a perfectly beautiful robe, that act as an honest to good mood ring and change color depending on the person's aura.
Fulgrim: A painting of himself! Wich is actually a joke, it's just a thin and hand painted decorative paper covering the true gift: a painting of all their family, together. Get called a try hard.
Ferrus: a collection of very pretty crystals and fossils! Wich he arranged in a chocolate box, and explain that those are his favorite flavors.
Angron: A punching bag that even *he* find durable. He made sure of it, by thoroughly testing it before giving it out, wich explain it's used appearance.
I know exactly who gets what..... Yall want to know in a part 2 ;)?

My mom bought me this book for Christmas
Tumblr media
The Resurrectionist by EB Hudspeth, a fantasy field guide full of anatomical illustrations of monsters and cryptids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The musculoskeletal systems are fun to look at, but not nearly as in-depth as I would have liked. If you have more than a passing knowledge of taxonomy (or in my case, access to Wikipedia), a lot of the details fall apart under scrutiny
The harpy has four upper limbs connected to one shoulder girdle; it shouldn't have arms, only wings
The sphinx is not classified as a mammal, but is still somehow in the family Felidae with cats (and like the harpy is also drawn with only two girdles despite having six limbs. I will give the author credit for giving the sphinx a keel for the wing muscles to attach to)
It lists the Hindu deity Genesha as a cryptid, which is a no-no.
Cerberus is also explicitly not a mammal, but somehow still a canine (literally in the species Canis with wolves, dogs, and coyotes)
Both mermaids and dragons are listed as members of the order Caudata; the only extant members of Caudata are salamanders, which kinda makes sense for dragons, but not so much for mermaids (also, the author keeps playing it fast and loose with cladistics; both mermaids and dragons are in the same order despite being in different classes, and while dragons are explicitly said to be amphibians, mermaids are given the fictional class mammicthyes, which means mammal-fish. At that point, why not just call mermaids amphibians? Why make up a fake latin hybrid name?)
But what bugs me most of all is the classification of the Minotaur as its own order of mammal when in mythology it is explicitly described as a hybrid of two known species (made possible only by the cruel machinations of the divine, but still)
Tumblr media
To use actual taxonomical nomenclature, the minotaur's species would be B. taurus × H. sapiens (specifically B. taurus♂ × H. sapiens♀; there are, to my knowledge, no legends of H. sapiens♂ × B. taurus♀). That's how ligers, tigons, mules, zorses, pizzly bears, narlugas, etc., are described.
If I had written this book, I would have leaned more into evolutionary biology. Most land animals have four limbs because they all evolved from boney lobe-finned fish, which split off from the boneless sharks and rays millions of years earlier, so any six-limbed vertebrates would need to be descended from a fictitious category of six-finned fish which would either be an offshoot of boney fish/tetrapods (I guess they'd be hexapods, though that term refers to insect arthropods), OR a precursor to boney and cartilaginous fish that both clades split away from much earlier (it's easier to lose structures than to gain them, so it makes more sense for a six-limbed ancestor to spawn four-limbed descendants than the other way around).
Think about how different elephants are from humans, and humans are from aligators, and aligators are from penguins, and remember that they all evolved from the same ancestor tiktaalik, an amphibious fish that existed some 375 million years ago. Imagine a precursor six-limbed species and how diverse all its descendants would look after 400 million years. Save for the occasional instance of convergent evolution causing two unrelated species to independently evolve similar body plans to fill the same niche, tetrapods and hexapods would look nothing alike. There would be very little recognizable overlap between the two. A six-limbed "pegasus" would not look like a real world horse, and a six-limbed "dragon" would not look reptilian/dinosaur-ish, for much the same reason that giraffes don't look like frogs; they're just too distantly related. Bonless sharks and boney fish and whales/dolphins all have similar looking bodyplans only because their environment requires the same hydrodynamic shape, while terrstrial vertebrates are much more physically diverse.

Westerosi Zodiac
situation — I needed to create a zodiac that had no seasons attachment, on a twelve month rotating calendar. I broke down the three main categories the signs fall under: modalities, seasons, and their elements. This is first/second draft of the animal ideas, I'm totally open to other categories measurements and animal representatives.
Seasons (Tell Time) — instead of months of set seasons, I turned this into Moon Phases
Spring: Waxing
Summer: Full Moon
Fall: Waning
Winter: New Moon
Element (Masculine v Feminine) — changed to "Guardians of Ruling Consolations"; I wanted to lean into the Masculine and Feminine energies of our signs, because Westeros needs all the Feminine energy it can get tbh. The elements are based on the Hippocrates types (sanguine, choleric, melancholic, phlegmatic) and I don't think asoiaf uses this, so I made some new ones~
Fire: Knight/War General
Earth: Mother/Diplomat
Air: Smith/King/Ruler
Water: Maiden/Healer
Modalities (Transitional Phases) — turned into Times of Day, my other option was states of water (liquid/solid/mist), but tbh google can tell me what animals are crepuscular, but I don’t have enough drugs to say which animals is a mist…so…
Cardinal: Day
Fixed: Night
Mutable: Morning/Evening
*Cardinal gets Day because Ares is the first sign in the Zodiac and called dibs, and because I was high it fit the vibe, I'm up for hearing alternatives 🤷🏻
Ares; Cardinal of Spring + Fire
under a Waxing Moon; during the Day; ruled by the Knight Westeros — Dragon
Taurus; Fixed of Spring + Earth
under a Waxing Moon; during the Night; ruled by the Mother Westeros — Lion
Gemini; Mutable of Spring + Air
under a Waxing Moon; during the Transition; ruled by the Smith Westeros — Falcon
Cancer; Cardinal of Summer + Water
under a Full Moon; during the Day, ruled by the Maiden Westeros — Sheep
Leo; Fixed of Summer + Fire
under a Full Moon; during the Night, ruled by the Knight Westeros — Snake Dorne — Scorpion
Virgo; Mutable of Summer + Earth
under a Full Moon; during the Transition, ruled by the Mother Westeros — Raven (as a messenger)
Libra; Cardinal of Fall + Air
under a Waning Moon; during the Day, ruled by the Smith Westeros — Ox
Scorpio; Fixed of Fall + Water
under a Waning Moon; during the Night, ruled by the Maiden Westeros — Kraken Elsewhere — Mermaid
Sagittarius; Mutable of Fall + Fire
under a Waning Moon; during the Transition, ruled by the Knight Westeros — Horse (depicted armored) Elsewhere — Elephant
Capricorn; Cardinal of Winter + Earth
under a New Moon; during the Day, ruled by the Mother Westeros — Trout (or any Fish)
Aquarius; Fixed of Winter + Air
under a New Moon; during the Night, ruled by the Smith Westeros — Wolf
Pisces; Mutable of Winter + Water
under a New Moon; during the Transition, ruled by the Maiden Westeros — Bear
the zodiac story
I was thinking something similar to the Chinese Zodiac? In that fable, TLDR the gods invite them to a party and they arrive in a certain order because of mystical shenanigans. Totally open to ideas and musing~
Just Notes
Because the three categories are based off the western zodiac, I would imagine that the Westeros animal versions would still have the personalty traits of the Western zodiac~ Feel free to add on, or offer polite suggestions, or other options for sorting the signs! Obvs, feel free to use this!

@doodlee-a said: Do the kids have a favourite animal before/after everything?
Tobias: Probably cats before the war. During/after the war, that's pretty self-evidently red-tailed hawk.
Jake: Before the war, dog. During/after the war, he's pretty firmly pro-human.
Cassie: Before the war, horse. During/after the war, she seems to really like dolphin and dog and anything that lets the morpher be carefree for a time.
Rachel: Before the war, elephant or grizzly bear. During the war, it's more likely to be house cat.
Marco: Before the war, humans. During/after the war, it might just be wolf spider.
Ax: Before the war, he mentions really wanting to see a Lebtin Javelin Fish. During/after the war? Red-tailed hawk.
