1.5 years of confidence in the making! 💪
It’s taken a bloody long time to get to where we are now -which looks exactly the same as where we were- but with a trail of blood, sweat and a LOT of tears in between 🫣
I’m a walking (sometimes limping!) testament to the old saying that “green and green makes black and blue” and felt every single ache and pain and the doubt that it brings, but it’s awesome to look back and see how far we’ve come - even if the jumps are the same piddly 35-45cm height as they’ve always been
This time last year I was seriously regretting getting Ed back from Waimak after our first rally back resulted in yet another fall, having a meltdown over a course of poles on the floor, too nervous to have lessons, didn’t wanna ride in case I fell off again, and was constantly doubting whether I was a good enough rider to bring out the best in him (and had even considered selling him at one point! - bullet dodged on that one 😅😮💨)
I’ve always had doubts if Ed was the right one for me (and very public ones too 🙈) but it’s hard to believe this is the same team as last year, it feels like we’ve finally hit our stride and are really working as a partnership - Ed’s strengthened up and matured so much in these last couple months alone, and that pesky swinging lower leg of mine has done her dash and getting better every ride (one more thing I can thank Molly for, if my leg wasn’t on then I was coming off 🤣)
If you were on the outside looking in you’d think we’ve stagnated, but we’ve done a lot of growing this year! I might not be jumping 65 oxers this year but I’m just proud to not be crying over 25! 🥳
It’s easy to lament over how far a journey you’ve still got to go, it’s hard to look over your shoulder and see how far down the road you’ve come 🙌💕

Against the Rocks
@sherlocktember2024 prompt - "stone"
“Watson, my horse is lame,” Holmes said with something approaching indignation.
Watson glanced at the horse, which was trotting along perfectly well so far as he could tell. “Is it?”
“Of course! Observe the slight dip of the head to the right.” Brow furrowed, Holmes gestured. Watson looked, and still didn’t see anything. “Pray halt for a moment.”
Before Watson could so much as pull back on the reins, Holmes had stopped and slid off his horse. It nipped at him, ears going back, and Watson tensed. Rented horses were sometimes irascible, although necessary on cases that would otherwise involve far too much walking.
But Holmes made a soft shushing noise, and his whole posture shifted. He softened, ducking his head slightly as he extended a hand. The horse relaxed and nuzzled at his fingers.
Holmes murmured something and smiled, apparently unconcerned that the horse was now attempting to eat his glove. He scratched the horse’s broad forehead with his other hand and gazed at the offending leg with the half-closed eyes that spoke of extreme concentration.
Watson patted his own horse’s neck and simply waited. He had been with Holmes for a long time, and knew better than to interrupt any train of thought. And besides, whether Holmes was inspecting a crime scene or a lame horse, it was always a pleasure to watch him work.
“There is a stone in that hoof,” Holmes suddenly announced.
“What? How can you possibly tell that without even examining the hoof?”
“There is no swelling in the leg, and the hoof rests on the ground at a slightly incongruous angle.” He plunged his hand into his pocket and withdrew a hoof pick. “As there are no significant rocks in the ground itself here, I presume that the angle is not caused by the ground itself. Whoa, my beauty.”
With this last comment directed at the horse, he stepped forward, bent, and skimmed his hand down the back of the horse’s leg. The horse, very politely, lifted the hoof.
Hoof supported in one hand, Holmes cleaned away the mud like an archeologist excavating for precious artifacts. He gave a little laugh, dug deeper, and then held up a sizable stone. “Here it is, Watson!”
“Well done, old man. I’m sure your horse appreciates it.” Watson’s horse, on the other hand, pawed at the grass with eagerness to continue. “Will you still be able to ride?”
Holmes, having disposed of the rock, was petting his horse with a dreamy look. He startled at Watson’s question, looking up as if he’d entirely forgotten that he and the horse weren’t alone in the world. “Hmm? Ah. Yes, now that we have dealt with that little problem, we may continue our pursuit of other, rather more expensive stones.”
He flashed a quick smile, brushing the back of his hand against the horse’s soft nose. Watson smiled in return. “I’m sure the prince will be pleased that we can still try to hunt down the stolen rubies.”
“No doubt. Oh, and Watson, we shall not merely try to hunt down the stolen rubies. We shall succeed,” Holmes said with customary confidence. He swung back into the saddle and stroked his horse’s neck. “But if there had been any injury to this poor fellow, we should certainly have turned aside.”
Watson chuckled to himself as they set out across the moor again at an easy trot. There were very few things that could distract Holmes from a case. But he had a certain fondness for animals, and an affinity with them that was a precious thing to see. In his estimation, rubies had considerably less value than the health of a horse.
