No, it’s not a muppet. This unforgettable primate, found in the mangrove forests of Borneo, is the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus)! Also known as the long-nosed monkey, males of this species sport a distinctive drooping proboscis, which acts like a resonating chamber to amplify their vocalizations. Scientists think it’s a sexually selected trait—meaning that females prefer louder (and bigger-nosed) mates.

A short explanation/ an excuse to talk about macaque monkey behaviors;

Most, if not ALL monkeys & macaques do this thing called "grimacing" when they feel threatened. Specifically, they show their teeth in a closed-mouth 'smile' and make themselves look smaller.

But, to monkeys, showing teeth is both a sign of submission and aggression. (Depending on the way they show their teeth, that is)

Side note: I believe one of these little guys is a rhesus macaque, which I believe Macaque was based off design-wise

In some situations, exhibit C can be viewed as aggressive; but this looks more like a yawn? Regardless, open-mouth 'smiles' are usually aggressive when paired with harder, angrier facial features.

Aggression doesn't always equal teeth, though. Some species actually make an 'O' shape with their mouths and it means the same.

Closed-mouth grimaces like exhibit D (usually accompanied by direct eye contact/showing of the sclera) are submissive. Note how D's features are softened like Macaque in that scene.

Macaque in this scene (he's smiling at this point) has a harder more aggressive expression. This is an example of an aggressive smile.

He's not opening his mouth to show teeth, but his intentions are still obvious.

His more genuine smiles are closed lip smiles or open smiles with closed eyes; there was that 1 frame in s4 where he smiles at Wukong without any teeth.

In conclusion; Macaque is exhibiting the behaviors of regular macaque monkeys whenever he 'smiles'/grimaces. His 'smiles' are either grimaces or an aggressive display. He's not necessary threatened at all times, it depends on the situation.
