Eyes of Gold (Part 18)
(A WukongxReader story inspired by Beauty and the Beast and Lutung Kasarung.) (First) (Prev)
With the first light of dawn came a thunderous crash that shook the mountain.
You jolted awake, dreading another rough escort to drag you back before Red Boy. Maybe word had returned faster than expected and he wasn’t happy to hear of his father’s defeat. Or the Prince’s impatience had won out and he was no longer interested in the words of a desperate human. Either way, you weren’t eager to face the hotheaded demon again.
But, much to your relief, the heavy door remained shut while frantic voices and hurried footfalls echoed through the dungeon beyond. As a second boom trembled the stone walls, you scooted over to the slab of iron and pressed your ear close, listening to the conversation just outside your cell.
“All troops; report to the front gate!”
            “Why? What’s happening?”
“The Monkey King is demanding an audience with the Prince.”
            “What does he want?”
“Who knows? But that damn monkey could storm the stronghold at any moment.”
Another quake startled the squabbling guards and nearly knocked you to the ground.
            “What about the prisoner?”
“Leave them. The human isn’t going anywhere.”
            “Yes, sir!”
Silence followed as the guards marched away but their lingering words rekindled a fragile hope within you. Sun Wukong was at the front gate throwing a challenge to Red Boy. It almost felt selfish to assume he was there for you but there was no other explanation for his sudden appearance; especially if he was as battle ready as the guards feared. But with a solid metal door and a maze of tunnels in the way, there was little you could do but wait for the Monkey King to come find you.
A shadow flickered the daylight as something small and fast whooshed passed the window, pulling you from your thoughts. Curious, you hurried over to peek outside just in time to see the same hawk soaring into the morning sky. It spiraled high before tucking its wings and dropping into a dive along the mountain’s craggy cliffs. At the last moment, it swooped away from the approaching ground only to fly up and begin again.
On the third drop, the bird was close enough that you could see the glossy sheen of its tawny feathers, the quick turns of its head as it searched the rock face, and the brilliant hue of its golden eye when it met yours. A shrill screech pierced the air as the hawk suddenly snapped out of its freefall and veered around, aiming itself directly at the mountain. And your cell.
You yelped and stumbled back as it sped towards you on a collision course. Seconds before impact, a puff of smoke obscured your vision and something slammed against the barred window. As the haze cleared, a distinctly not-bird silhouette slowly came into view.
            “Peaches!”
In the blink of an eye, a familiar monkey squeezed his way between the metal bars and leapt onto you, clinging to your robes with tight, frantic hands.
            “Shihou!?”
Shock and disbelief turned to overwhelming relief that nearly brought you to your knees. You wrapped him in a crushing hug as tears misted your eyes and trickled down your cheeks. His soft fur and peach-stone scent soothed all your pains and fears, surrounding you in a comfort you had come to cherish. In another puff of smoke, you felt him transform in your arms, his warm embrace shifting to hold you instead.
“I’m here, my Peach. You’re safe now,” Shihou cooed, voice soft and reassuring. He pulled back just enough to gently brush away your tears while his eyes searched you over for injury. “Are you hurt?” When he caught sight of the bump on your temple, fingers hovering over the tender bruise, his expression darkened to outrage. “Did that little brat–!?”
“Just a bump on the head; courtesy of my sister,” you assured the monkey, leaning into his caring touch. Despite the lingering aches, seeing your peach friend again felt like the answer to all your prayers. “I’m fine, Shihou, now that you’re here.”
His bristled fur relaxed, golden eyes shimmering with a mix of relief and guilt. “I’m so sorry, Peaches,” Shihou murmured before pressing a kiss to your lips. It was sweet and earnest, brimming with emotions unspoken but undeniably shared. Too soon, he broke away, caressing his thumb along your flushed cheek. “I never should have let any of this happen.”
“It’s not your fault. No one could have guessed what my sister was planning.”
Shihou’s frown deepened, fury flashing his eyes a vengeful red. “Regardless, she and Red Boy will answer for this,” he vowed darkly. After a tense moment, the demon let out a weary sigh, his temper simmering to something more calm and collected. Strong arms pulled you close while his brow rested against yours. “I’m just glad I finally found you.”
You leaned back curiously, Shihou’s grasp and handsome face tightening in brief panic. A gentle hand brushing along his cheek fur quickly soothed his distress. “How did you know where I was?”
“The village elder was very eager to ruin your sister’s scheming,” Shihou chuckled, his mirth not quite reaching his remorseful gaze. “After our argument, I thought you just wanted space and went to your room. But then, no one could find you in the palace or anywhere on the mountain so I paid a visit to your village. I was…afraid you wouldn’t want to return but even if you hated me, I just needed to know you were safe.”
“I could never hate you, Shihou!” you objected, startling him from his tale.
The monkey’s smile was fond but fragile as he nuzzled your hair. “That’s good to know,” he whispered before continuing, “When I heard you had been handed over to Red Boy, it was only a matter of finding which stronghold he took you to.”
“But if you’re the one who came to rescue me…” you pondered, thinking back to the panicking guards. “Why is Sun Wukong at the front gate?”
“A distraction while I get you to safety. Which reminds me…” Shihou reached into the folds of his robes and pulled out a wrapped bundle of fabric. Shaking it loose, he presented a magnificent cloak that caught the light in ripple of shimmery reds and glittering golds. “I picked this up on the way here. It will protect you from fire; just in case.”
“But…how…?” You were still processing the ominous implications when the mantle was draped over your shoulders. Despite the broiling heat of the mountain, the elegant silk felt smooth and cool against your flushed skin. It didn’t make the idea of a fire-proof cloak any less baffling, though. “Is this really necessary?”
“Peaches.” Hands cradled your face, forcing you to meet Shihou’s firm stare. “Humor me. Please?”
The strained tone and haggard expression were startling enough to quiet any further protests. “Alright,” you conceded.
Shihou sighed with relief, placing a grateful kiss on your brow. “That’s my peach friend.” With a final tug and tuck, the mantle was wrapped securely around your figure. “Now, let’s get you out of here.”
“How?” you asked, glancing around the cell. The walls of stone and metal were just as impenetrable as before with only one exception. “The window?”
The monkey shook his head. “Too risky. The cliffs are dangerous and won’t give us any cover,” he said, scrubbing a hand through his fur. “We’ll have to sneak our way out the back door but we have to move fast.”
“But how are we supposed to get out? The door doesn’t have a handle.”
Shihou threw you a cheeky grin, his tail curling in amusement. “Not a problem, Peaches.”
He strolled over to the sealed entrance, rolling his shoulders and curling his hands into loose fists. Falling into a ready stance, Shihou took a slow, focused breath before suddenly striking out, his palm connecting against solid iron. A metallic screech echoed through the dungeon as the door flew from wall and into the corridor, crashing to the ground in a heap of twisted metal.
You were still blinking in shock when Shihou took your hand in his. The same hand that held enough strength to reduce the unyielding door to scrap was nothing short of gentle as he delicately laced his fingers with yours.
“Let’s hurry before the guards notice,” he said, checking the hallway before glancing back at you. “Ready?”
            “Ready,” you nodded.
“Whatever happens, just stay by my side; I’ll keep you safe.”
You squeezed his hand with a warm smile. “I know.”
Shihou didn’t answer but his gilded eyes glowed with a fierce affection as he pulled you close by your clasped hands. With a final nod, you followed your peach friend out of the dark cell into the labyrinth of the fiery mountain.

Hey Peach Friends! So sorry this chapter took so long to get out. I started my summer job so between working seven days a week and convention season starting up, finding time and energy to write has been tough. Hope you all enjoyed this chapter, shout out to everyone that clocked the hawk, and thank you so much for reading!
Huge thank you to @szynkaaa for the wonderful artwork of Shihou and Peach Friend here!

WELL @britt-kageryuu looking at it from a purely storytelling perspective, besides Zhu Bajie being the pilgrim who's the "I don't want to go on this journey & will suggest we split up at every opportunity" guy whereas the Monkey King is the "I'm going to save Tang Sanzang no matter what so the journey can be completed" guy, Sun Wukong did put Zhu Bajie through the wringer in their first meeting/Zhu Bajie being brought into the pilgrimage.
Said wringer included everyone's favorite monkey disguising himself as Zhu Bajie's wife as a trick, chasing him around before fighting with him for an entire night, & at least at the start of the journey effectively coercing Zhu Bajie to leave what had been his home.
Now it has to be recognized that Zhu Bajie is nowhere near a saint, with his list of numerous evils including many acts of cannibalism and marriage under false pretenses. But there are quite a few hints throughout the journey that Zhu Bajie is genuinely homesick, and does want the journey to end so he can go back to Old Gao Village where he had lived.
Put the friction that the pig and the monkey would feel against each other for their often opposing desires along with Zhu Bajie probably viewing Sun Wukong as the pilgrim forcing the journey onward in spite of all odds as well as the one who forced him to leave a comfortable life, and you can see why everyone's favorite pig would want to kick Sun Wukong out of the party/make him suffer.
& that's not even counting how Zhu Bajie has learned from painful experience that in a direct confrontation Sun Wukong would trounce him every time. And how he also knows that there's nothing the monkey can do against the headband Tripitaka has control over. No better way then to get at Sun Wukong than through Tang Sanzang.
Also! If you're looking for a good copy of Journey to the West, @journeytothewestresearch has kindly provided PDFs of the 2012 Anthony C. Yu edition, which is considered the most complete and accurate English translation to date, for free! You can access them here:
I also get that 4 volumes of 100 chapters of text is a LOT, so you might also appreciate Irwen Wong's super useful summary of Xiyouji, which provides bullet points on the most important story beats of each chapter:
Sorry for the overabundance of speculation! I wish you a happy reading.
I was looking up stories from JTTW to cross reference something I was going to add to my story.
And I would like to enquire among those who know more about JTTW than I do.
What was Zhu Bajies problem with Sun Wukong?
Because there were quite a few stories (even if they were summarized) where it goes "Demon/enemy attacks to get to the Monk, Wukong defeats the enemy, Zhu Bajie convinces the Monk that the Monkey was the reason behind something. Monk uses circlet on Wukong" or on a couple occasions 'Wukong is temporarily booted from the party, because of Zhu Bajie."
I get that some of it is from some teasing or pranks from Wukong, but I still don't get why Zhu Bajie seems to both look up to, and loathe the Monkey King.
Then again I might just be getting a weird interpretation of things because I haven't read JTTW fully (still trying to find a copy), and most fanfics are either "Best Friends/Close Brothers" or "Zhu Bajie got him kicked from the pilgrimage for the 50th time".
