What is the difference between keeping a journal and writing things down in your planner? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Keeping a Journal: A journal is a personal space where you can freely express your thoughts, feelings, and reflections. It’s more introspective and focused on emotional and mental well-being. Journals are often used to explore ideas, document experiences, and track personal growth over time.
Advantages: Journaling promotes self-reflection and emotional release, helping to process complex emotions and improve mental clarity. It encourages creativity and can serve as a therapeutic outlet. Disadvantages: Journals can be time-consuming to maintain, and because they are more personal, they may not be as structured for daily task management.
Writing Things Down in a Planner: A planner is primarily used for organizing daily tasks, appointments, and goals. It’s more structured, focusing on time management and productivity. Planners help you stay on track with deadlines and responsibilities, ensuring that you efficiently manage your day-to-day life.
Advantages: Planners enhance productivity and time management, helping you prioritize tasks and stay organized. They are ideal for tracking goals and ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks. Disadvantages: Planners are more task-oriented and may lack the emotional and creative depth that journaling offers. They might not provide the same level of personal reflection or insight.
In summary, while a journal is best for personal growth and emotional expression, a planner excels in organization and productivity. Using both together can provide a well-rounded approach to managing life and personal development.

getting seriously organized⋆.ೃ࿔*:・📄
Tumblr media
the importance of organization - the nature of life is that it can seem really disorganized and chaotic but it doesn't absolutely have to be that way! organization helps to improve your efficiency and overall add structure to ur life.
agendas - a daily to do list is a MUST. i use notion to organize my time. i separate what i need to do into categories (A and B).
Tumblr media
CATEGORY A ; tasks that hold the highest level of importance.
CATEGORY B ; tasks that are more simple (its not gonna nip u in the bud if u dont do a task in category b)
monthly calendars - monthly calendars are so helpful because i set new goals for every month, and when everything is already planned out and in front of you it makes it feel a million times easier to achieve those goals.
list important events
birthdays
appointments etc
lists - making lists is therapeutic for me at this point. its actually a lot of fun so i highly recommend it, but instead of just making lists for fun, you could make lists that'll be useful in the future. for example...
restock lists (lists of things that you consistently need and use)
grocery lists
meal prep - meal prep is so useful because it makes grocery shopping easier, and its easier to eat consistently when u know what ur going to eat

Planning Ahead
this is something i'm still working on, actually. keeping a visual log of everything i need to do has been really useful, but it's still a pretty new habit for me.
the issue is that i really, really hate taking the time to have those things be nice- because then i get unmotivated when the load gets heavy and i can't keep it that way. no cute advice, this is my planner for solely function.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHORTHAND. i use shorthand for everything. a list of my favorites:
ESP - spanish, or FR - french (really works for any foreign language class)
ENG/ELA - english language arts
MT (math) - CALC (calculus) - PCLC (precalc) - STAT (statistics) - ALG (algebra) etc
GEO/HIS (geography or history)
SCI (science) - BIO (biology) - CHEM (chemistry) - FNS (forensics) - PHYS (physics)
GFX (graphic design) - DRM (drama) - HLC (healthcare) - BSN (business) etc... for whatever electives you have, lol
PJ (project)
HW (homework)
CFA/QZ (common formative assessment/quiz)
SD/SG (study/study guide)
PKT (packet)
SM (submit)
UG (ungraded)
SUM (summative)
FORM (formative)
PG _ (page _)
NSR/EC (not school related/extra curricular)
DNO (due night of)
DIC (due in class)
DEOC (due end of class)
i combine these for little nicknames like ESPPJ, MTPK, GFXPJ, etc. or DRM (info) NSR, GFXPKT EC
DESCRIPTION. i add a quick description of the item, just so i know what it is. usually just the actual assignment name or what it entails. if it's at home reading for english, it'll say "ENGHW Reading PG __-__". a drama script might say "DRM Script DEOC"
DATE. i always add the due date. i write it as a fraction so that it takes up a tiny bit less space. if i know, this is where the time it's due is added too.
URGENCY. i had another post about how i decide an assignment's urgency here, so i throw one of these numbers on the end.
DON'T CARE ABOUT CUTE! the point of this is to keep info. build the habit for a while, and once you have logging things as a habit, you can make it cute. but if you're already having trouble building the habit, adding more work will make it more difficult in my experience. always add onto your habits that already exist.
USE IT! i've also seen people have full planners that are so so cute and then just. never use them??? you're making this so that you have a way to keep track. making it, and then just throwing it in your bag to not be seen until tomorrow is defeating the point. use what you made.

I'm like, really struggling trying to balance all the responsibilities of my professor job, my freelance work, reprinting/distributing my zines, working on personal projects, creating fandom stuff, remembering to eat, maintaining my house, calling my friends, and everything else I'm forgetting in this moment.
It all feels like too much (probably because it is too much).

making an effective planner⋆.ೃ࿔*:・✍🏽
Tumblr media
i've answered the question of how to make an effective planner as an inbox response but i thought i'd put it into a post so that then if u guys needed it y'all could access it easier ✨
buying the right planner ; for physical planners i prefer to buy planners that include lots of space for additional writing instead of just the date. yk those ones? make sure to get a binder/planner that u think is cute and has space for a to-do list, monthly overview kinda calendar etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if ur working from scratch with a binder you can buy a cute binder or decorate it with stickers and things of the sort. for the paper i highly recommend graph paper bcuz its neater in my opinion but whatever floats ur boat.
on that paper make space for the following ;
monthly calendar (with a little column for monthly goals)
weekly agenda (you can create a new agenda every week if u have the time/energy to do so) but if u dont then you can try...
writing the days of the week and beneath them were gonna try and replicate the concept of a toggle list. its basically like writing "monday" and there are little sub-tasks written below, like what u have to do on that day.
so how i'd do it, is i'd write the day of the week as a header/title. then beneath it i'd use little sticky notes (bonus points if u color coordinate) and then i'd write my tasks on the sticky notes. that way, when a new week comes i dont have to create a whole new agenda, i can simply remove the sticky notes but still keep the structured agenda if that makes sense.
reflection space (to reflect on the productivity of ur month/week/day and what u can improve on and what u can keep doing)
my thing is, if u wanna do a physical planner, whether its an already made planner or a binder, just make sure that u have SPACE for things like that.

How To Start A Bullet Journal
Bullet Journal: "A customizable and forgiving organization system. It can be your to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, and diary, but most likely, it will be all of the above. It will teach you to do more with less." (Ryder Carroll, creator of the Bullet Journal)
Supplies
Notebook (typically it's a dot-grid notebook, but you can use any type of notebook)
Pen
Set Up Key Pages
Index Page: similar to a table of contents
Key Page: create a key or legend to represent different tasks, events, and notes.
Personally, I don't use these pages because I usually have a bookmark to keep track of important pages, and I already know which symbols/colours to differentiate my tasks/events.
Create a Future Log
Purpose: To see the next several months (or the whole year) at a glance
What To Put: At least 3-6 months of the year's worth of events, birthdays, holidays, deadlines, etc.
Monthly Spread
Purpose: To see the month at a glance
What To Put: A calendar, goals, and any other elements that are relevant to your planning.
Weekly/Daily Logs
Purpose: To see your week/day at a glance.
What To Put: Tasks, events, and notes for each day/week.
You can use a combination of both!
Design and Decorate
Purpose: To personalize your bullet journal so that feels more like you, and it'll be more enjoyable for you to use it.
Reflect and Adjust
Purpose: To see what's working and what's not in your journal system.
Consistency
Purpose: To get into the habit of bullet journaling. It'll help you be more mindful and organized with your life.
Experiment
Purpose: To find what works for you. Don't use other people's designs and ideas if it doesn't work for you. Bullet journals are supposed to be systems that will help you organize.
The bullet journal is a flexible system, and you can adapt it to suit your preferences and needs. Explore different styles and find out what works best for you.
