In case ppl were curious about the open hardware, open software gay ipod. As you can see, next to other mp3 players.... It's massive. But the good thing is that it should be easy to repair, customize and replace parts all you want. Also, unlike the other players (which are old tech by now), it has Bluetooth which is great. But the setup took the longest time, because I was having issues with the microsd card I was using. It would crash in the middle of a song and get stuck in a boot loop until I took out the SD card. I had to set up a dev environment to get the debugger running to find out that I was having the same memory allocation issue as the others. So I followed the suggested fix of removing all the album art on all the files, and it seemed to work for a second before it crashed again. In my desperation, I reformatted the card to FAT32 so I can put it back into my sansa, but somehow??? it fixed the malloc issues?? (before it was exFAT) So I'm just keeping my eyes on it and trying to actually listen to songs, but now i'm noticing some user experience quirks.

ex) on rockboxed sansa if I select a file from the file browser, it plays the rest of the songs in the folder and even moves onto the next folder if I reach the end, but Tangara only loads up that single song into memory. You can go through the 'albums' menu and select to load the entire album but still, it only plays that the album and doesn't play any more than that. sometimes I just like going through my own file structure rather than the indexed database, so I wish there was a better experience there.

The scroll wheel is a bit finicky imo, even after I've adjusted the sensitivity it takes me SO many tries to get the dial to move up just one entry. Sometimes the small controlled movement I'm making to go up just one line registers as a long press, which makes the UI jump up a whole page. I think there are some feature requests that are asking for a "hybrid" approach of it acting like a button and a scroll wheel so we'll see where that goes!

Under the cut for the other mp3 players I have

Sansa fuze has a bad screen, I think I messed up the ribbon cable when I opened it up to clean. Just gotta go back in there and fix it again 😭. Also the mechanical wheel (which is a rubber coated plastic) is STICKY because the rubber disintegrated, so I really do have to open it up to disassemble everything to clean it out. But otherwise it sounds great, takes an SD card, compact and customizable enough.

The Ipod mini has a bad battery that I replaced but the rockbox + sleep state messed up the new battery and it won't hold a charge anymore so, I put in the original battery and reverted it back to the original software which SUCKS bc itunes (I think u can foobar2000 it actually, but haven't tried yet). I don't think rockbox and ipod mix very well in terms of sleep state which is so unfortunate because I love the feel of the hardware but hate the software.

The sansa clip+ is the first one I had and still is thee best, it just has the smallest battery of all of them :( rockbox works great and it has never let me down!

I finally made my first pull request to an open-source project. It hasn't been reviewed yet so I don't know if it will be accepted but either way I'm really happy to finally have done it. It's just a small feature on a fork of a browser extension, but I'll work my way up from there. Maybe one day I'll be able to contribute something to KDE.

I love the feeling that when I want something to be different in a program, I can actually do it, and then share it with everyone.

If it actually goes through I think I'm going to love open-source even more and start being borderline annoying about it. I actually feel great right now.

Bugs are a frustrating but unavoidable part of the programming experience. Perhaps instead of focusing on avoiding bugs, you could work on improving your debugging skills to squash those bugs faster. Here are some things you could try.

Learn to use a unit testing framework and write tests for your code as you go. That way, if your code doesn't function how you expect, you'll be able to tell immediately!

Practice using a debugger to step through your code. A debugger can let you investigate the state of your variables during execution, and can often be much faster than print-statement based debugging.

Familiarize yourself with refactoring tools. If your code is messy, it's often a good idea to clean it up by refactoring it. Knowing how to find all uses of a symbol will make this cleanup easier.

Beyond that, like with any skill, developing as a programmer involves practice. Try and learn something from every bug you fix, and soon you'll find yourself making those errors less and less.

I have to go on a nerdass loser rant bc its insane to me how people will shit on wikis (and discourse on the actions of Fandom itself aside) but I also have to be subjected to vids about things like character heights from youtubers relatively popular in the community with unsourced information simply stating it comes from the game manuals despite the fact that it includes characters whose heights have not actually been canonically revealed (i.e. most/all characters first introduced in Tekken 6 or afterwards who have not been playable in either Tekken 8 beta) and people will eat that up because that content creator has already amassed a small following while im sitting here chewing through wires like a rat. And don't get me started on the Comments of the vid stating the most wild off the wall shit I've ever seen. Like there are some crazy unkempt wikis out there but as someone that edits the tekken wiki we at least source all the important information we put on there. Some characters Don't have ages revealed. Some don't have heights. You can't compare their in-game models because prior to tk7 Nina was listed as 5'3 and we know her ass is not 5'3 even in flats. Youtubers can release some cool informative videos but they can also get away with just blatant misinformation and no one wants to go to the wiki and see if they at least have an answer with a source because wikis all get lumped together with the worst page on them or the worst one in the same category.

Most people in the early twenty-first century are completely unaware of Open Street Maps or these sorts of public, crowd sourced data. Of those that are aware, a majority likely do not contribute, in the same way that Wikipedia has far more users than editors.

The Public Comment Process (+ how to write effective public comments)

The US federal rule-making process is founded around the right to comment: the public's opportunity to publicly address the agency responsible for a decision. This right is enshrined by the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) of 1946 and reinforced by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970, which both require that citizens be able to take part in pre-decision communication with a federal agency.

Public comments are important for a number of reasons:

Agencies must consider all new information received during the comment period and address that new information before publishing the final rule; this includes revising the proposed rule.

A good comment can be the basis for a court challenge. If the agency does not adequately address the new information in the comment, they can then be sued and the rule placed on hold until the issues raised by the new information are resolved.

Advocacy groups and journalists often scour public comments to get ideas for their own comments and campaigns, and to contextualize proposed rules.

Submitting a public comment on proposed federal rules and regulations is not like commenting on social media, though. Substantive comments that require agency response are those that contain information pertinent to the actions proposed in the regulation, such as community impacts, scientific evidence, or other data. Non-substantive comments ("I don't like this!") don't require any response beyond maybe a "Comment noted."

Use an opening sentence to establish your credibility. State who you are and summarize any of your experiences that are relevant to the topic of the proposal.

Honestly, I find it quite sad the state of software development is where it is. I say for one main reason, and that is my experience with the game Clone Hero.

I, as many do in their lifetime, felt the desire to play Guitar Hero, as it is quite fun and one of my favorite games. I do not own a legitimate way to play the game, so I download and run Clone Hero, a project that aims to replicate the functionality and experience of a Guitar Hero game. Do you know what I find? No audio.

Fine, this is no problem, I've dealt with this in the past, and it is relatively common for my unique setup. I check to make sure all dependencies are met, I scour the internet for solutions or clues, I do all that I can to attempt a recreation of some of my fondest memories, and yet, to no avail.

Now, this is the part where most sane people would give up. They might just accept that they are fated to either spend hundreds on an outdated console, copy of the game, as well as guitar, or never play again. Luckily, (or quite unluckily as you'll see) after all my time on Linux as a somewhat alright software developer, I finally decide to simply solve the issue myself by going into the source code, fixing it, and submitting a pull request. However, to my utter dismay, unfortune, naïveté, however you may choose to interpret my experience, I am met with one ugly truth.

Clone Hero is proprietary software

Why is it that in this day and age, we feel that it is necessary to do such a thing? To disgrace your software, your project, your creation, by locking it away, allowing users simply to use, but not indulge in their freedom to tinker? Truly, the glory days of software were back in its primordial phase, as a tool used for computation by some of the smartest people of their time, when distributing software as a pure, naked binary alone was considered odd, to say the least, and any schmuck who owned a piece of machinery that cost more than they did could create or modify any piece of software they desired (with limitations of hardware, of course)

I simply find it so cruel and barbaric for developers to perform as they do now, treating proprietary, non-free software as though it is the norm, and especially so for things like Clone Hero, which are free-to-play, indie games crafted by and for a community.
