oh and another take that I feel the mxtx- specifically mdzs fandom needs to hear is that none and i mean none of the characters have any set morality. this applies to their mindset, actions, feelings- the entire point is that you see where all the characters come from and recognise their actions. none of them are completely 100% good or bad. the point of the entire novel isn't to see and judge their actions. it's to see where they come from, what mindset requires those terrible or honourable actions. is it okay to call out a character on their actions? yes. but please for the love of mo xiang tong xiu remember what caused those actions and whether your call out is necessary instead of making posts like "character A was just trying his best and character B came and ruined everything that's why I hate character C". no. almost all the characters are shitty to some extent albeit in different categories. recognise that and you will appreciate mdzs even more.

Wei Wuxian licks his lips and leans forward slightly, walking his fingers across the countertop aimlessly toward Lan Zhan. “You know, Lan Zhan,” he drawls, “A-Yuan says we’re both in the book.”
“Mn,” Lan Zhan responds, tracking the path of his fingers intently, “I am apparently Hanguang-jun, the moral upstanding hero.”
“And I’m the devious Yiling Loazu, who led you astray,” he smirks, peering at Lan Zhan through his lashes.
Lan Zhan meets his stare, head-on, lit from within like molten sunshine. “No,” he corrects, “not astray, Wei Ying.”
Wei Wuxian tilts his head, waiting for him to continue. His fingers stop their dancing, resting just inches away from Lan Zhan.
Lan Zhan shifts his own hand, bringing them even closer, their fingertips almost brushing.
“The Yiling Loazu did not lead Hanguang-jun astray,” he says, eyes piercing as they flicker between Wei Wuxian’s. “They were partners, and…”
“Ah,” Wei Wuxian breathes, “the decent romance?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t answer, watching him closely. The pupils of his eyes have grown so large there’s only the tiniest ring of gold around the edge. He can see himself reflected in the black. He thinks he likes the version of himself that lives in Lan Zhan’s eyes.
They’re standing on the edge of a cliff, waiting for the other to take a step forward, bracing for a fall.
It should be terrifying, this sudden drop into something completely new, something entirely unknown yet so familiar. But Wei Wuxian is filled with conviction that no matter what, Lan Zhan will catch him.
It's as electrifying as it is calming, this certainty that here, with Lan Zhan, he is safe.
Wei Wuxian tilts his head to the side in a way he knows sets the unmarked skin of his neck on display. “I’m sure it was more than just decent, with a handsome hero like Hanguang-jun.”
Lan Zhan quirks an eyebrow, his gaze resting on the curve of Wei Wuxian’s neck, just as he’d hoped. "Handsome?"
“Well,” Wei Wuxian responds, tapping his index finger so it brushes against Lan Zhan’s fingertips. His skin is soft and perfect, just like the rest of him. “He isn’t wrong. You’re very handsome, Lan Zhan.”
“Really, Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan says, voice quiet and deep.
“Yep, definitely worthy of being compared to the beautiful Second Jade of Lan.”
“Is that so?” Lan Zhan shifts closer, the smell of him filling up Wei Wuxian. He smells so familiar, like something he knows intimately. Sandalwood, Wei Wuxian realizes, with sudden clarity.
Lan Zhan continues, “I would love to hear more about your opinion on my beauty and prestige, Wei Ying.”
“You don’t know anything about me, Lan Zhan. Why would you care what I think?”
Lan Zhan tilts his head, only just. “Do I need to? To want to know how your brain works?”
I commissioned this lovely artwork by the wonderful @lotuslate of a scene from my fic, once upon a time, 很久很久以前 where the entire cultivation world is cursed to live in the modern world without their memories and abilities, but of course wangxian find a way to fall in love all over again.

ROUND 1A, MATCH 1 OUT OF 8!
Causes of Death & Propaganda Under the Cut:
Jiang Yanli
Cause of Death: Stabbed; Self-sacrifice to save her brother.
Propaganda:
she's your pfp that's got to count for something
I love JYL don't get me wrong! But also. She is solely written as a part of the male characters and does not get much in her own right. She is Wei Wuxian's older sect sister, or Jiang Cheng's sister, or Jin Zixuan's fiance/wife, or Jin Ling's mother he never got to know. Even what characterization people give her (like liking soup/cooking or standing up for her family despite being gentle) are things that have to do with her brothers. I wish we got more of her in her own right.
AND ALSO. ALSO??? HER DEATH MAKES. NO SENSE. Okay first of all - she was in Lanling grieving for her very recently dead husband & taking care of her newborn baby. Who would let that woman out of Lanling????? WHY???? How did she get out of there SO FAST????? She doesn't have a sword/isn't a cultivator (at least in MDZS) so she couldn't have flown. And then after she got there WHO LET HER JUST OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BATTLEFIELD???? WHY DID SHE GO THERE???? Even if there was a short part of her saying "I need to talk to Wei Wuxian about how he killed my husband and I'm going to get there no matter what" would've clarified things a little bc it's like okay she needs to go there even if we don't know how. Where are my answers MXTX, where are my answers????
Qin Su
Cause of Death: Suicide; Stabbed herself with a knife. (NOTE: In some versions of the story, she was being controlled and thus forced to kill herself.
Propaganda:
I'm fairly certain this character was only created as set dressing for the main villain's tragedy. We get zero insight into her inner life, zero hints that any such inner life might even exist, and after she dies basically no other named character other than the aforementioned villain is shown to be majorly affected by her death, even those who logically should have meaningful relationships with her.
Compared to the other two main female characters in this series (who are also fridged) Jiang Yanli and Wen Qing, Qin Su is probably the least aggravating because she's barely in the show and has very little character that we see. But I still think it's worth noting. I really wish that she could've survived and been there in Guanyin Temple IT COULD'VE BEEN COOL OKAY.
Wen Qing
Cause of Death: Executed; Burned to ashes.
Propaganda:
The fact that Wen Qing is the character that originally said the thing about "I'm sorry" and "Thank you", which is repeated multiple times in the post-resurrection parts of the series, but is so rarely mentioned by name is so aggravating! She's such an important part of the plot that did SO MANY THINGS but just basically disappears after her death!!! The only time I really remember her being mentioned is when her brother, Wen Ning, mentions her integral role in the golden core reveal. Jiang Yanli's ghost haunts the series after her death, but Wen Qing's really doesn't, and that's so fucked up to me. She even dies during the same time that Wen Ning does, but then it's revealed he survived (well, "survived", he is a zombie, but he was that beforehand too) SO WHY COULDN'T SHE HAVE SURVIVED TOO????

Propaganda
Shen Qingqiu: After waking up in the mushroom body, Shen Qingqiu decides that one of the first things he should be doing was procuring a new fan.
"The first step to starting his all-new life would, of course, have to be proceedings with which Shen Qingqiu was most familiar. First, for a prop, he needed a folding fan, one with a white silk base, decorated with an ink wash painting of mountains and rivers. Shen Qingqiu snapped the fan open and waved it before his chest, sending his long hair and whiskers flying. Perhaps his image wasn't ideal and was slightly unsuited to said prop, but that didn't matter. With a folding fan in hand / Badass act at my command."
Nie Huaisang: Nie Huaisang, a passionate and artistic boy in his youth - despite his brother and clans wishes - had always loved painting fans more than wielding a saber. But after the death of his brother, he revealed a craftsy, intelligent darker side of himself as he meticulously planned and executed a years long plan to avenge his beloved brother. Appearing weak and naive to others while hiding his smile behind his fan, everything went just right according to his plan, his fan became a stronger weapon to him than a saber ever would
(someone just submitted some propaganda for him to my inbox so I edited the post).

ok, let's talk about jiang cheng.
i hate the two extremes that the fandom has when portraying jiang cheng's character.
he's either the best brother the world has to offer or the worst scum of the beings that ever stepped his foot on the planet.
not many actually acknowledge the canon jiang cheng.
(note that i'm neither speaking against him nor for him so take every sentence without any emotion behind it. also, this is written by a person who doesn't like jiang cheng as a character but doesn't hate him - at least most of the time - either, so do with that what you will.)
he lead the siege against the burial mounds in the grief of losing his sister, the person who he loved the most in the world. but it was stupid that he, of all people killed wei wuxian with the reason being wei wuxian killed his sister, when jiang yanli so clearly sacrificed herself so that wei wuxian could live.
he was entirely jealous of wei wuxian since he was a child and has taken decisions in his adulthood with jealousy and envy many times. but it is also important to note that ever since he was a kid he did not have the acknowledgement of his father and all he had in the form of his mother was a person who constantly compared him to someone he wanted to (and to an extent, succeeded) love as a brother, berating him for not being as good and taking put her jealousy and trauma on her child, making him a shell of negative emotions. the latter doesn't, by any means, excuse the former (i cannot stress this enough), but the former cannot be said without acknowledging the latter.
jiang cheng's feelings towards wei wuxian are very complicated for both us as an audience and himself too. he cared for him and wanted him by his side. the fact that he at least cared for wei wuxian is shown when he distracts the wen guards onto himself so that wei wuxian is not caught by them. like it or not, jiang cheng did sacrifice his core for wei wuxian as wei wuxian did for him. and he wanted wei wuxian to be always by his side, it's clear when he speaks about the broken promises between them. but, at a lot of times i felt that he treated wei wuxian as a subordinate more than a brother even though he wanted to treat him as a brother, but he never really realized that he didn't actually treat him the way he did. (correct me if i'm wrong here but this is how i interpreted it.)
jiang cheng is a hypocrite (like a lot of people in this series). he always speaks about wei wuxian's debt to the jiang sect, but he completely brushes aside his own debt to wen ning and wen qing and doesn't even attempt to help them when they're in a dire situation. in fact, he led the siege that killed their family in the burial mounds. lotus pier was fallen and he could not afford to anger the entire cultivation world, but if he holds someone else as to how they should regard a debt, he himself should regard it the same.
fandom has created the divide where either jiang cheng becomes this ray of sunshine for wei wuxian and helps him by turning his back against the entire cultivation world, which is disregarding what his very character is written for, giving into the societal pressure and someone who runs on negative emotions due to his upbringing. or, he is the evil person who doesn't acknowledge the sacrifice made by wei wuxian and demanding that it doesn't matter if he gave his core to jiang cheng because he owes the jiang sect. an action of wei wuxian that jiang cheng evidently has very strong feelings for and sends him into an emotional mess (granted, it doesn't take much for him to go into an emotional mess). and i hate both versions just as equally.
talking specifically about jiang cheng and wei wuxian's relationship, i personally believe that there is no reconciliation. there is an silent agreement that they do not hate each other and an acknowledgement of what has happened between them (silent, because it is never actually spoken about in detail after the mess of emotions that is guanyin temple), but they cannot put what has happened behind them and treat each other like they did during their teenage years, as much as people would love to see that. they can be nothing more than two people who shared a past and cannot be anything less than that either.
wang zhoucheng softened jiang cheng's character for me along with the writing for cql i admit, but it has also made me see things that i otherwise wouldn't have after looking at the sheer bitterness that the adult jiang cheng was in other adaptations.
either ways, i can't bring myself to completely like his character. i dislike his character for a lot of things he did. a lot of actions he has taken without having to bear the consequences of them while every other person of 'lower standing', in their eyes, has to bear the consequences of not only their own but also others has left a sense of bitterness in me that i don't think can ever leave.
there are many other things that i haven't spoken about, but it just pissed me off a bit to always see either 'good brother jiang cheng' or 'scum of earth jiang cheng' and the rarity of the actual jiang cheng.
on a side note, i hate yu ziyuan. she had a powerful core and a husband who would've listened to her but all she did in life was let bitterness consume her to such an extent that she fucked up the life of both her own son and an orphan, even forcing her daughter to take up the role of a mother at a young age. she could've been so much more but she decided to waste her entire life having jealousy and envy over a woman who never actually directly did anything to her, going as far as to abusing the said woman's son (emotionally, if not physically before the lotus pier fell).
i don't have any strong feelings about jiang fengmain's character but he could've done a lot to help jiang cheng by just acknowledging him. he wasn't a good parent and it can never be excused by how shitty his relationship was with his wife.
the only jiang who deserves everything is jiang yanli. precious, precious shijie.

ROUND 1A, MATCH 2 OUT OF 8!
Cause of Death & Propaganda Under the Cut:
Madam Lan
Cause of Death: Unspecified
Propaganda:
she doesn't even get a name....the disrespect
Trisha Elric
Cause of Death: Illness
Propaganda:
She rocks that dead anime mom hair!
Misaki Unasaka
Cause of Death: Shot
Propaganda:
Woman of all time. She didn't want her child originally but changed her mind after her diagnosis. She genuinely started caring for her child, but was killed since her redemption would be inconvenient for the two main characters and the story overall.
Feel free to cut this part out but I also feel like having her stay an estranged mother would have arguably been more interesting, but instead it feels as if she's punished for being a "bad mom" in the first place. It feels like there's so much media that says being a bad mother is unforgivable, and this show, though I love it, did the most cliche thing and punished a bad mom. Sigh.
More propaganda for Misaki Unasaka: while she was not the greatest mother (neglecting her child, saying she wishes she never had a daughter) it's explained by her circumstances- it's heavily implied she was r*ped and is currently a struggling singer in an abusive relationship, she did the best she could in her situation. Add to that the situation of single mothers in Japan- abortion is basically impossible and there is no monetary help from the government if you're poor. She deserved better.

let's break the characters like crackers 🍘; time to choose !!
It's time to choose the next character to dismantle with a screwdriver!!
As always I don't open my mouth, but my friends have commented and their comments are close to the characters🪭... Another thing is that those characters have no idea if they will end up in a specific ship but they could either solve their problems and end the discussion or end up in the arms of an original character (Don't judge me PLS)🌚
⚠️Remember that if the one you want is not chosen, it will be put back into another round... So invite friends, cats, dogs, cousins, followers to vote for your favorite!!!!⚠️
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!🍀
They will all be complete character studies, some of them have not been dismantled... I put some under the car :D
⚠️THE NEW MINGJUE X WEI WUXIAN X (MYSTERIOUS BOY ) IT'S OUT TONIGHT!!! ⚠️
