Girl would far rather take a nap than fight the forces of evil, but thankfully for us (and thanks to a persuasive cat) she does both. Loves naps almost as much as she loves food, which is a lot.

in the very first episode, she prioritizes taking a nap over studying immediately after getting in trouble for failing a test, in the episode where people are coming down with a sleeping sickness, Usagi says it sounds nice, because you can spend your whole life dreaming, in one episode, a student from another school asks her what her best subjects are, and she replies "naps and lunch," she frequently oversleeps and has to rush to get ready in order to not be late to school (sometimes, despite rushing, she's still late), and her little introduction she does at the beginning of every episode in the early seasons mentions that she loves to sleep.

Portgas D. Ace:

he’s got narcolepsy and regularly falls asleep in his food, but given his personality I feel like he’d fall asleep in his lunch even without the narcolepsy

Ace's introduction is the civilians thinking he was dead because he fell asleep so suddenly. Every one piece character has a trait and his is falling asleep while eating.

Ace Propaganda I have a legal obligation as an Ace kin to fight for my man - The narcolepsy thing happens multiple times both in the anime and in the prequel books. - Every time he does that, he wakes up and wipes his mouth on the nearest person’s clothes, save for in the first Ace light novel where Deuce scolded him awake - He also does this on Buggy’s ship and once again they thought he was dead. Why he was there I don’t know. - Also he’s got fire powers so therefore human heater and the coziest of naps

Kirby looove napping and sleeping and is too cute when he is :3

They the littlest guy ever, all that they like to do is eat, play with their friends, and sleep. There’s a copy ability called sleep that literally just makes them tired, and in forgotten land there’s a more powerful sleep ability that give them a little blanket and bed. An eepy little guy.

kirby starts off a lot of his games napping & in forgotten land you can even take a nap with elfilin to restore health and it's ADORABLE. and of course, he has his sleep ability, which just makes him take a nap right after inhaling certain enemies.

He's a ball who likes to eat, sleep, and play with his friends, and just so happens to be a godslaying entity that may or may not be an incarnation of a deity. Also just look at his nap animations in Kirby and the Forgotten Land

kirby has canonically slept through at least one hostile invasion

Bedtime Bear:

Perpetually sleepy bedtime buddy. His job is to help children get a good night's sleep and have good dreams.

Sayaka:

It's a clever play on the story where, rather than the littlest becoming human for love and a soul, instead she becomes a mermaid after loosing both, even gaining the bittersweet ending of having a chance at heaven but she still needs to do good after death

i was surprised to learn that sayaka's story is based on the little mermaid, but it makes more sense the more i think about it. such a heartbreaking, tragic tale that i get emotional ocer every time.

A lot of Madoka Magica fans believe she is based off of the original Little Mermaid story cuz, just like the original Little Mermaid, Sayaka loved a boy and said boy did not reciprocate. SPOILERS, she makes a contract with Kyubey to become a magical girl and in return her wish was to help Kyosuke (the guy she likes) who was disabled. Later on when she becomes a witch cuz she felt she wasn't good enough for Kyosuke and doesn't tell him about her feelings, her witch form is a mermaid. I suck at explaining but I hope my propaganda helps 🙏

(Major spoilers for madoka magical)Okay so I will admit her allusion to the little mermaid ain't super obvious, but let me explain, she is based on the original story for the little mermaid, she makes a wish for the sake of a boy she loves basically sacrificing her soul, well he ends up in love with another girl, and as a result she ends up going on a downward spiral and transforms into a monster known as a witch, her witch form is a mermaid.

Even though she's not a mermaid outside her witch form, her story is made to be a direct parallel to the self-sacrificial nature of the little mermaid, even letting herself die. This isn't the end tho because in one of the happier endings of the little mermaid she still becomes sea foam/dies but she also has a chance at becoming a sea spirit and helps others, this is very similar to Sayaka's final fate in the anime where after Madoka rewrites the universe Sayaka still gets corrupted/dies but instead of becoming a witch, she becomes apart of the law of cycles and helps Madoka save other magical girls. There are way to many similarities to her story and the little mermaid for it to just be coincidence imo.

Poor girl is stuck in a craptastic world where horrible monsters kill you, the only way to fight back is to become a zombie child soldier killing what remains of your own kind for survival, the wish you made will inevitably blow up in your face because the person granting it is a jackass, and the writer is hellbent on shitting on the girl power ethos of the magical girl genre by making it so that girls suffer and die for trying to achieve reasonable desires like "not starving to death" and attaining agency in their lives dooms you even harder because of womanly emotions. She needs a win. Also, she is explicitly paralleled with The Little Mermaid--she is a tragic figure who makes a deal to help the boy she loves in exchange for putting her life on a ticking clock, only to be passed up in favor of another girl. As a result, she dies and becomes something else--in this case, Oktavia von Seckendorff, "the mermaid witch."

As a child i did not even realize this was a little merm adaptation, but it really reads. She is sooo strange and other worldly and the movie absolutely captures that dreamlike fairy tale vibe

Ponyo a roughly five-year-old magical goldfish who can transform into a frog-type thing and a human girl. She's the eldest daughter of the literal goddess of the sea and a former human sailor given immortality. She falls in love with the five-year-old boy who cares for her and is thrilled to explore his ordinary yet magical world. She's bouncy, exuberant, and joyful. She loves ham. She doesn't have to give up her voice.

The Little Mermaid:

Not sure if SINoALICE characters have come up in fairytale brackets you've run before, but SINoALICE was an online gacha game where fairytale characters fought each other battle-royale style for the chance to resurrect their author and rewrite their story. The Little Mermaid's motivation for getting her story rewritten is that she recognizes that the reason her story is beloved is because it's a tragedy, and so she wants to rewrite her story to be even more tragic. It's such an interesting character motivation! Plus she has the cutest character design & outfits in the entire game.

Sorbet Shark Cookie:

They're a shark merperson who wanted to walk on land and join the pirates so much they made a deal with a dark mermaid to get legs and not scare them anymore. But despite being a pirate they still help others even if it would put them in danger. Also they're very cute, can only speak in bubbles when on land and can freely transform between seaform and landform.

A shark cookie who wishes to live on land with the rest of cookiekind. He gains the ability to do so, but can only speak in bubbling noises. He naturally decides to become a pirate. He can also turn back into a shark man by jumping into the water. As for if this counts…he literally sings “Part of your World” as part of his story. When CRK had a Disney crossover with certain characters interacting, guess which cookie Ariel interacted with?

I know Allura won't win at this point but some propaganda for her:

-Fridging is always so much worse black characters because not only do you have to deal with misogyny but misogynoir

-Genuinely an amazing character in a kid's show for little kids to look up to and they fucking killed her off. Idr exactly because it's been so long but I remember a writer saying that she was traumatized by Allura dying in the original show so what? She wanted to traumatize more kids?

-Allura was a whole ass main character but got so sidelined as the show went on. It was so disappointing to see her go from the leader of Voltron to just one of the other units.

-Her constant sacrifice wasn't really acknowledged

-She genuinely had such a great story going in! Like she had her own personality, her own arcs, her own role on the team as a leader, and had this aspect of tragedy (the last of her race that she should've been princess of)

Steph was a wildly popular character who was made Robin for a couple month specifically in preparation to kill her off in the War Games cross over event. During her time as robin comics fans responded so well that one of the writers asked if they should keep her alive and let her have a real run but an editor refused. Instead she was horrifically punished by the narrative for... doing exactly what every robin has done always. Not listening to batman, rescuing him, trying to earn his approval. Unlike the other robins she was murdered in a way that implied some kind of sexual assault while none of her friends or mentors looked for her. Did i mention she was 15?

she's a sword fighter! she wanted to be the best sword fighter in the world and was until she died the best in her class. while practicing with zoro she was giving him tips on how to improve (even before they become friends). she has a really cool sword (which zoro takes after she dies to "carry on her legacy" or something). we dont know anything else about her :)))))))))

Listen Oda normally writes the women characters well but this... this was not it. Other than giving Zoro motivation she doesn't really have much of a role in the main story and idk she could've had a more "honorable" death or something

I am implementing this rule as, while I love to see what everyone submits, I also want to give more people a chance. I feel as though in the past, there have been a couple people who have submitted a majority of stories and I want to give more people a chance to! Plus, with more people submitting, there gives more room for a variety of type of stories in terms of popularity, genre, time period, and language!!! :) If it comes to be that I do not have submissions, I will either extend the submissions time or allow people who have already submitted the max amount to submit again :)

I was originally going to include pictures of how the characters died, but god trying to find pictures of their deaths really emphasizes how badly they were treated by their shows. Kuina dies off screen but I did find an image of her body, Allura just vanishes into the ether, Cordelia dies off screen but returns as a ghost??? I think I found Stephanie Browns death tho
