My favorite part of the Mo Dao Zu Shi novel so far is how when Wei Wuxian is resurrected he proceeds to play gay chicken with someone who is a) actually gay and b) completely in love with him.

I thought it would be fun to draw Lan Wangji’s emotions considering he is a very :| character (also still not super stable in his design but I’m having fun)

I think one of the reasons wwx and lwj could work so well together in the end were their differing journeys in their perspective of control - which (to me) is one of the central themes of the story.

Lwj grew up in a very controlled environment, but he was not the one in charge of his life. He is constantly controlled by the Lan clan rules, as well as the expectations placed upon him as the second Jade of Lan.

Overtime he learns to take control of his personality and actions - defying the clan norms and showing up where there is chaos. His regrets are all about how he let himself be controlled into making decisions, eg. letting Wei Ying go to the burial mounds alone, not confessing his feelings.

Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian grew up desperately trying to find some semblance of control/power. Unlike lwj, he grew up in a household where his role and position drastically changed from day to day - sometimes he was treated as a servant and other times a brother. This meant that in his head, the only way for him to gain some semblance of control was to be consistent and powerful (because then he was useful enough to keep).

This is shown in how he is desperately trying to convince everybody that he is in control and that the events that aren’t his fault are still his burden to carry, because he learnt that he is only worth using (only worth controlling) if he can first control himself.

However, as the story progresses, he learns that not everything was his fault and this slow cede of guilt and blame in what allows him to finally be at peace and happy.

Their character journeys are so different, yet the core of most of their drives is about their perspective of control - whether of themselves or the people around them.

This is full of wildly different points but I hope it makes sense lol.

Thinking about lan wangji as a child looking up to his older brother for everything as if lan Xichen has the answer to every problem there is. Thinking about how he consulted the rabbits to lan Xichen because he liked them and wanted to keep them but he can't keep them so he doesn't know what to do but his xiongzang must know because older brothers know everything. Thinking about how this trust probably dissipated to nothing after those 33 whips.

I don’t understand how MXTX can say Luo Binghe is the worst in bed when Lan Wangji is…the way he is.

Barring the Mai Gu Ridge scene (which doesn’t really count as Bingqiu’s first time imo), Binghe asks for consent, does a lot of foreplay, uses lube and repeatedly asks Shen Qingqiu if he feels good during the act. And yes, there’s room for improvement. But Binghe knows that and uses porn to learn how he can do better. SQQ even says Binghe is a fast learner.

And as much as I love him, Lan Wangji is sexually scary. No foreplay. No lube. No established consent. Wei Wuxian doesn’t even know how to have gay sex and LWJ doesn’t talk him through it their first time. WWX is confused and doesn’t understand what’s going in where, literally as it’s happening.

I’m not shading Wangxian as a ship. WWX has a rape kink that works perfectly with LWJ’s thing for dubcon. They’re both happy with their sex lives, so there’s no reason to take issue with it. But to say LBH is the worst in bed is objectively wrong.
