This typeset of Pentimento by orange_crushed was created by @teleportbooks for me in the 2022 @renegadeguild typeset exchange! (And bound as part of my Binderary 2023 stack, and look, I am REALLY behind at posting right now, and going to schedule some posts to catch up.)
This fic is a MDZS Wangxian modern AU set in a museum, where Lan Wangji is an art conservator, and Wei Wuxian is an art handler. (Drama! Tension! Meeting after years apart!) One of the joys of a well-constructed AU is seeing how the author recontextualizes canon, and I really enjoyed how the pieces fit together in this fic, as well as Lan Wangji's voice and point of view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I raided my wife's art supplies for this one (also for the most themed photo op I've done to date) and used two different types of canvas for the book cloth. The lighter cover is just untreated canvas, backed with fusible interfacing and tissue, run through a home laser printer for the cover, and the title on both the cover and spine is acrylic paint using a Cricut-cut stencil. The darker canvas on the spine was gessoed and had a backing on it, and it did NOT want to stick with wheat starch paste, and only held with great reluctance with straight PVA glue. But it worked in the end! The endpapers are some of my wife's gelli-plate printing experiments, for a modern art vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The typeset is lovely and elegant, with a title page set up like a gallery placard, and @teleportbooks included all of the artwork referenced in the fic as if they were colour plates in an art book! Look at this gorgeousness...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out overall, and the setting was definitely fun to riff off with the materials used. (Although I will only use that darker canvas again under duress... or for something else where it's the perfect fit, honestly.)

💠💙A Touch To Calm This Aching Heart
by:Multifacetedinterests
http://archiveofourown.org/works/38013544
Summary
Wei Wuxian dropped her hand to her side as Madam Yu and the dragons drew closer, refocusing before her mind wandered too far away. She needed to be demure and un-fox-like if she wanted to die a moderately less painful death. They couldn’t know what she was.
“I hope this offering can lay the foundations for more amiable relations,” Madam Yu stated.
~*~ ~*~ ~*~
Huli jings needed touch. It didn’t matter if it was sexual or platonic, but it was a biological necessity. Without touch, a huli jing would slowly wither and die.
(In which huli jing Wei Wuxian becomes dragon Lan Wangji’s war prize, and biology brings them closer together.)

fic tease!
Wei Wuxian wriggles away. “I’m getting older, Lan Zhan, and I want to stop. I want to be strong enough to hunt with you for years. But I can’t do it with this measly golden core.” He brandishes the book he’s smuggled out of the library pavilion, a wildflower stuck inside as a bookmark. “Here, look. Look at this.”
Lan Zhan obediently takes the book and opens to the bookmark. Wei Wuxian waits for a reaction.
“...a gauntlet of eight dual cultivation methods that will rapidly increase the development of the inferior core to the superior core’s level,” Lan Zhan reads aloud. He falls silent, perusing the page.
“What do you think?” Wei Wuxian says after the silence lasts a bit too long for his liking.
Lan Zhan looks at him. The tips of his ears are a telltale pink. “This is… an extreme method.” Read more on AO3

‘Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan.’ He takes a few rushed steps forward. Lan Wangji turns to look at him, his eyes softening visibly. ‘Ah— your forehead ribbon is tilted.’
Maybe I grabbed it while we were just about to— He notices Lan Wangji coming in his direction. It just occurs to him that he kind of said it too loud and now all the disciples, including Zewu Jun, are looking at him.
Lan Wangji stops in front of him and stares for a long pause. His eyes hold the same emotions they did a few moments ago, inside the Jingshi. There's a faint smile on his face, one that's reserved only for Wei Wuxian.
A second later, he lowers his head down in front of Wei Wuxian. ‘You may fix it.’
An open declaration.
The whole world stills just as Wei Wuxian's heart comes to a stop.
--- Set after the Jingshi scene in episode 43.

Good indeed
“Don’t tell me you never had these,” Wei Ying said, his frown loud across his brow. “Lan Zhan! Every kid tries them.”
Lan Wangji gave a minute shrug. He never had many sweets as a child. There was one very memorable occasion when his mother made rice cakes; if pressed, Lan Wangji would categorise their flavour as pink. They were pink. And sweet, he supposed.
“Lan Zhan,” with the reproving tone. “You have to.”
Since there was no feasible way for Lan Wangji to refuse him, no matter how ridiculous the request, he picked up the sweet and placed it gingerly on his tongue. His eyes immediately watered at the attack.
“Good, isn’t it,” Wei Ying grinned, so pleased that Lan Wangji made himself chew and then swallow without a single hum of complaint. It was not that he disliked sweets, exactly. Simply that he was unaccustomed. He could come to like them, if Wei Ying willed it so.
“What else,” Wei Ying was muttering, tapping the bridge of his nose. “What else, what else?”
“Mn?” shamefully unfocused. It was only, the bridge of Wei Ying’s nose was a lovely place to rest his eyes; there were two freckles there that especially called to attention. It was sometimes quite difficult to have conversations with Wei Ying in the sunlight, where he shone; or under torchlight, where he was golden; or moonlight, where he glowed; or in the dark, where he was brilliant.
Oh. Wei Ying must have said something; the corners of his eyes crinkled with the smile. “What is it my husband is so busy thinking of, hmm?”
“You,” Lan Wangji answered, at once, honestly.
“Yes, yes, that’s always your answer.”
Lan Wangji blinked in confusion. “It is the truth. I always think of you.”
“Lan Zhan!” with the flushing cheeks, impossibly lovely, “Why do you always have to,” and then he was in Lan Wangji’s arms, hiding his face in the crook of his neck, burrowing. The voice came out muffled: “Just, unbearable!”
“Mn,” Lan Wangji capitulated. He felt no particular remorse for the weight of his Wei Ying crushing the air out of him, or the scent, talisman paper and sweat and rain and rose-water, or the waving rolls of laughter he could still hear, choked-out and precious for how common they were. Wei Ying was so free with his laughter, generous with his joy. It was incomparable to anything Lan Wangji had ever met.
“We were talking about something else entirely!” Wei Ying emerged from the cocoon of Lan Wangji’s robes. “Trying to distract me with your handsome devil tricks—no longer, I am onto you!”
Lan Wangji lowered his head in repentance. “Whatever Wei Ying wishes,” he said, to another groan.
“No, silly, you’ve got it all wrong. Today we are doing as Lan Zhan wishes, remember? We’re trying to fill all these gaps in your childhood.”
“There are no gaps,” Lan Wangji said, not for the first time.
“How can you say that when we just learned you never had sweets!”
Lan Wangji felt himself frown. Wei Ying called it his ‘non-frown’; he was of the opinion that Lan Wangji’s face barely moved, that extracting an expression out of him was an incredible feat. He made little sense, sometimes.
“I had sweets before,” Lan Wangji said. “My mother had—”
“Made rice cakes once in your life and it tasted pink! You see how that doesn’t count, yes? You don’t even remember how it tasted.”
“I remember. Pink.”
“I mean, a real taste!” Wei Ying threw his arms up, and affection so bright scorched through Lan Wangji’s middle, dazzling. For a moment, he could think of nothing at all. Blinded with this, Wei Ying, on a grey day, in a small town’s market, arguing about sweets. “Pink is not a flavour!”
He was not certain what qualified Wei Ying, whose taste buds would have dissolved many years ago, to be the judge on such matters. But then again it was not as though Lan Wangji knew better. “Mn,” he said, appeasing.
“You,” Wei Ying tutted a finger in his direction, eyes bright, “will do as your gege tells you, for once in your life. What about respect for your elders, hmm?”
Lan Wangji allotted a moment for mental mathematics before declaring the matter pointless. He will do as Wei Ying tells him, of course. “Mn,” was the easiest, most honest response, even if it came off a little eager.
“All right,” grinning wide, putting a merciful arm around Lan Wangji’s shoulders, “where to, then?”
“What?”
Wei Ying flicked him softly. “What do you want to do. Your gege wants to spoil you, Lan Zhan, and remember, you promised to let him.”
“I…” he truly, truly, did not know what to say. Normally pleasing Wei Ying was a simple matter, requiring no conscious thought; this was a task of unprecedented proportions. “Wei Ying spoils me all the time.”
“Not nearly. And far from enough. Come on, you can tell me! What is it that Hanguang-jun is so embarrassed to do?”
“There is nothing,” Lan Wangji said, shame-faced, failing, “Wei Ying.”
“Yes?”
“I want to do as Wei Ying wants.”
Wei Ying rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Well,” he said. “Suppose that would be a tough question. Put on the spot like that, my poor baby. Say,” brightening, “as a proper Lan, I bet you never even considered the concept of a nap.”
“What is a nap,” Lan Wangji said, just to make him laugh.
“Aha! Another gap unlocked. Lan Zhan, we are going back to the inn room, and you are going to curl into bed with me like a good boy and let me cuddle the nap out of you.”
A frisson of heat ran, lightning-bright down his spine. “Mn,” he said, unable to control his tone.
“Lan Zhan! Such a naughty mind. I mean it! We will nap.”
“Yes,” Lan Wangji said earnestly. “I will be a good boy for Wei Ying.”
“Ah,” with a hint of a laugh, “yes, my husband is such a good boy. Back to the inn, then; there’s nothing better than a good nap on a rainy day. Oh, but we must go back to the sweets stall first and clean out the nice lady’s wares.”
“As Wei Ying wishes.”
He could imagine few things indeed that would rival being in bed, holding Wei Ying. Perhaps he will get half a shichen for this. Perhaps even longer.
“What is it you are thinking of?” Wei Ying asked, his voice soft, words close. He tucked a lock of Lan Wangji’s hair behind his ear, eyes wide, gentle, burning-fond. Lan Wangji sought, and sought, for the words, and knew he would never come close to conveying this.
“You,” he said eventually, defeated, delighted. “My husband makes me very happy.”
For a moment Wei Ying just rested his head on Lan Wangji’s shoulder, and breathed. Then he smiled—something new, brighter, peeled open and brimming with joy. “Good,” he said, and took Lan Wangji in his arms for a crushing embrace, “that is very, very good.”
They went back to the sweets stall, and then to the inn. Lan Wangji, who never felt the existence of gaps in his life which weren’t filled with Wei Ying’s return, was indulged nevertheless, and allowed it, just as he would allow Wei Ying anything.
Tomorrow they would switch, and he would get to spoil Wei Ying. It was a very good existence indeed.

Hear A Song This Deeply by so_shhy
Did I get everything I wanted to done for Binderary this year? Ahahahaha no. Life intervened and I most certainly did not. But you know when I DID finish books? Binderary 2023.
Tumblr media
The typeset for this fic by @soshhy was a surprise gift to me from the inimitable @teleportbooks in the @renegadeguild 2022 exchange event. They know how much I love a good MDZS modern-with-magic AU! This is a singledad!WWX Wangxianfic, with some really creative worldbuilding around musical cultivation, and some great Lan brother character dynamics.

The cover is lokta mulberry fibre paper, and I do love the effect of using the raw edge overlapping the book cloth spine. Scrapbook paper endpapers came from a random pack scavenged out of my wife's art supplies, title and spine stencilled with gold acrylic paint.

Look at that typeset! Gorgeous. Thanks, E. Hyde!

💠💙Menace, to headache, to…nephew in law?
By:Nyatci
https://archiveofourown.org/works/43791591
Summary:
Lan Qiren decides to supervise Wei Wuxian’s punishment himself. While doing so they come across a mysterious orb that seems to show them visions of the future.
—————
Alternatively: the fic in which Lan Qiren suffers, sees the future and suffers some more. He also gets drunk. Shenanigans ensue.
Menace to headache to…nephew in law?
‘Wangji !’ He thinks in despair, ‘I’ve seen visual representation of the depravity of your thoughts and what those red ears mean! Go copy virtue a thousand times!’ But he remains quiet. After all, any mention about what they had witnessed would make people think them mad.
~~
Lan Wangji’s gaze lingers on Wei Wuxian longer than is proper and the Yungmeng Jiang head disciple flushes again! Right in front of Lan Qiren!
~~
He almost sputters at those words! “Boy what on earth are you saying now?” He asks for Wei Wuxian to answer with a shrug. “I don’t want to be a mistake for him to make” the boy says softly and Lan Qiren wants to strangle somebody. Maybe he can get Xichen to copy Conduct as Wangji copies Virtue. Yes, that seems reasonable to him in order to avoid future disasters.
~~
He wants to take back his earlier thoughts about Wei Wuxian’s intelligence. The boy is oblivious to a degree that should be criminal. “Wei Wuxian,” he says, “men who are not attracted to other men don’t think them ‘beautiful’ or ‘perfect’!” He exclaims and before the boy can sputter a response Lan Qiren opens a jar of wine and chugs it much like Wei Wuxian had done moments before.

i want a modern wangxian au where the story doesn’t finish when they get together. i want chapters and chapters of their dynamics while in a relationship.
i want to see wangxian going in a cinema date and wei wuxian kissing his boyfriend to the point of leaning down to his pants until lan wangji has to forcefully stop him because there are people nearby. i want them discussing over to eat at a fast food chain or at a healthy restaurant friday evening and lan wangji folding when wei wuxian pouts, so they end up with a veggie hamburger, a big mac and a mcflurry on their table (the mcflurry belongs to lan wangji).
i want them giving goodnight kisses to their bunnies before going to sleep. i bet lan wangji likes his showers cold, wei wuxian likes them burning hot, and they always hug each other from behind after it just to annoy the other because of their body temperature.
i want to see lan wangji glaring at jiang cheng from the other side of the dinner table and only showing a nice demeanor when it's jiang yanli who directs her words to him and that infuriates jiang cheng so much that he calls out for memories of when lan wangji used to reject wei wuxian's advances just to be petty. lan wangji hates when they remember how he used to ignore his wei ying.
i want wei wuxian burning their kitchen with a recipe and lan wangji running back home worried wei wuxian got hurt (he just got a slight burn, but he's all pouting about it anyway, and lan wangji showers him in love and care even though their stove definitely got the worst of it and they'll need another one urgently).
i want wei wuxian pranking the juniors he got at work. i want lan wangji or wei wuxian unintentially going viral regarding something stupid. i want lan xichen being the one who takes candid pictures and who appears by surprise in the apartment during moments they're not ready for it.
i want wei wuxian to have ongoing fights with every neighbour: a competition with the upstairs woman who thinks her sex's life is better than theirs, the university student who thinks he can pull a rock song louder than wei wuxian's favorite ones, the left-door hag who thinks she can still hide a dog even if there are explicit rules in the building forbidding it (wei wuxian specifically chose that building because of this rule and he will not let her get away with it), the right-door lady who thinks she can flirt with wei wuxian's man without consequences (nothing that some disappearances of some of her mail can't solve though), and the neighbour at the front door who's definitely into some drug scheme (wei wuxian helps the police out with that).
these are just stupid ideas, but you get me. i want everything about this couple. i need especially this. i need it like the air i breathe. like the sun. like food.

The perfect contradictory character of wei wuxian
i'm writing this as i eat chocolate instead of working on my WIP lol - but essentially i've been thinking a lot about when a fic characterization of WWX just hits the spot for me, and when it doesn't. Now whether this type of characterization is canon I think is always partially a matter of opinion, because by its very nature a fanfic cannot be...well, canon. And it is made all the more complicated by the existence of CQL canon and MDZS canon, and the different MDZS canons with different scenes and levels of censorship, and the way fans and fic writers often franken-canon it together. So this post is only my rambling about characterizing WWX in fic.
Whenever I write WWX, i always find it a balancing act. Talkative, but not too talkative; golden-hearted, but willing to question what society sees as moral; confident, but complicatedly so depending on what point he's at in his character arc; oblivious, but not oblivious; impulsive, but analytical. I'm also constantly asking myself "Is this a personality trait, or a result of his environment? Both? What would impact his character if there are different events or circumstances?
And then there's the appearance of what his character is, which is almost just as important as his actual character. The masks or roles he puts on for others, or the ways those around him willfully misinterpret him. How does this character perceive WWX's actions in this or that context? Do they find him reckless, oblivious, or call him morally wrong (even when he isn't)? Does WWX want them to react a certain way, and does that impact how he acts around them?
In my opinion, writing WWX in a modern setting or genderbend is perhaps the most challenging. Not only do you have to ask yourself what personality he'd have if it were shaped by different cultural standards, gender roles, or backstory, a fic author might also want to do their best to preserve his character integrity as a "classic golden-hero turned dark anti-hero" archetype, but have no idea how to translate that into completely different set of circumstances.
For instance, WWX and gender roles. I really love that WWX is a subversion of the classical masculine hero archetype in cnovels. As a teenager, he's confident, flirty, intelligent, skilled, enjoys having fun and not taking life too seriously. As a resurrected MXY, he has no issue pretending to be a lunatic cutsleeve, so no toxic masculinity there lol - he also likes getting swept off his feet by LWJ, and playing up the "helpless maiden" role, and is very much a romantic with cottagecore dreams, saving his first kiss (traditionally that kind of innocent romanticism is attributed as a "feminine" trait, regardless of whether it actually is or not) - LWJ in contrast falls into many feminine tropes such as being known for his beauty/grace, the way he carries the money pouch (women traditionally managed the finances), can cook, has petty jealousy, etc - while at the same time undeniably also has masculine traits. The way Wangxian subvert gender roles and tropes is wonderful and i love their characters for it.
But then how does one even begin to translate that dynamic into a genderbend? Does teenage WWX still have that masculine classic hero personality? Or does she become traditionally feminine with LWJ the one acting more masc? Do different gender roles and expectations affect how WWX interacts with the world, such as how they react to her flirting, her confidence, her heroic tendencies? I read a fic a few years ago that I thought it a fabulous job exploring some of these very questions in the canon setting. I am still devastated that it remains incomplete.
Whenever I read a fic with Wei Wuxian, I always fall in love with depictions of his character that capture some of this balance, these "contradictions," so to speak (I don't have a better word to describe it than contradictions, even though these traits don't actually contradict. Ig I could say character complexity? But people often throw that phrase around without explaining what they mean by it, so). It's what makes him such a cool character to read about. It's also what makes him so unbelievably difficult to write sometimes. So many fic authors struggle with his character, whether attributing a trait to him that he only appears to have, like thoughtlessness. Or project a trait onto him that he doesn't seem to have that much, like insecurity, or not knowing his own worth as a person/or not knowing the magnitude of his abilities.
WWX to me has always seemed to know exactly how skilled he is and what he is capable of, and he at least intellectually seems to be aware that he is not unlovable or worth less than others, even if he is required to act or treat himself as less than his peers due to classism and society. I've always felt that his attitude towards himself, his own worth and his own ability, is a sort of practicality that would come from growing up as a street kid whose only goal is survival, and who is completely aware of just how little the world cares if he does or not.
Then there's the concept of him being ridiculously oblivious/emotionally unintelligent, which many others have talked about before me. I think this idea in the fandom largely stems from the fact that Wei Wuxian doesn't pick up on a lot of small details that he later recognizes and realizes later on. But there's been a lot of discussion of how much of that was because of comphet, situational circumstances, and LWJ's own reticence that prevented or distracted WWX from making those connections earlier in the canon timeline. This means that this "obliviousness" is likely something that would change if the circumstances are different, such as WWX existing in a world with no comphet, or existing in a timeline where he isn't dealing with Wen indoctrinations or being severely traumatized by the burial mounds and a war, LWJ being less repressed and hot-cold etc, etc, etc.
Now, one WWX characterization i genuinely have such a hard time reading is manic pixie WWX. The ones where he's just... chirpy. Bubbly. (Usually really oblivious. Never intentionally breaking rules, he just can't help it! he's just too cute and enthusiastic uwu) I can't explain why, I don't even know why, but it grates on my every. last. nerve. (that being said, if u want to write manic pixie WWX, then write whatever u want, seriously. Don't even think about letting my opinion stop u from doing what you like and having fun)
As for depictions I really love to see: a WWX that kind of scoffs at rules/the system. One who genuinely has a somewhat poor opinion of LWJ's character before LWJ proves himself, because I like a good enemies/rivals-to-friends-to-lovers because that's how I believe he sees LWJ until LWJ punishes both himself and WWX and WWX goes "oooh u don't use the system to self-benefit or aggrandize or oppress, you're actually trying to be like, moral. I respect that, actually. Let's be friends and go on bromantic outings in Lotus Pier"
Or when WWX's teasing gets a little mean, because WWX can be a little mean, often unintentionally so, but still (think WWX showing LWJ porn/intentionally pushing LWJ's buttons, WWX making that comment about JL's mom). I think it's a character flaw of his that adds depth/complexity.
Also, WWX trolling people/enjoying mischief and making people question the "system." I've always felt his first-life self had the kind of annoying swagger that a guy who Knew He Looked Like That and Knew Exactly How Smart He Was that would honestly make me so annoyed if I knew him irl. Like, Mianmian, I get it. LWJ, I get it.
Basically, I like when his character is written to make u so mad you aren't sure if you want to throttle him or kiss him silly (especially if it's a LWJ pov). Or when he acts super carefree/silly, at the same time as he shows how scarily smart he is. It's the juxtaposition. The contradiction. *slaps hand on the metaphorical table in emphasis*
[TL;DR] So what i'm trying to say is, writing WWX is a challenge, but one that is so worth it.
Alright I've spent like an hour on this post, so though there's so much more I could talk about, I'll leave it at that for now. For those of you who would still really like a part 2 of that "so i read a comment bashing LWJ" post, i do plan to write more on that, so keep an eye out 👁️

One of my favourite canonical quirks of Wei Wuxian’s is how weirdly heteronormative he is. Like he just fully assumes everyone is straight, including him, despite nearly everyone around him acting pretty fkn gay, including him.
I had a lot of fun pushing this concept to the nasty, sweaty limit in my Ranked Jerkmate AU wangxian fic ‘Wankxian’ (yes yes I know I’m going to hell) and so, from said fic, I’d like to present:
🌟 Top Five Times WWX had zero self awareness about how incredibly gay he was being 🌟
(disclaimer: I view WWX as bisexual but I’m using ‘gay’ as a catchall term)
5) When NHS was trying to plan ahead for LWJ’s upcoming visit but WWX kept interrupting to ramble on about his ‘friend’:
Tumblr media
4) When he explained to JC why Ranked Jerkmate is Not Gay Actually and then waxed lyrical about how amazing LWJ is:
Tumblr media
3) When he was texting NHS and explained that he gets off on watching dudes jerk it ‘to learn new techniques’:
Tumblr media
2) When he and LWJ were ‘competing’ and he was losing his mind with entirely heterosexual platonic appreciation for his bro:
Tumblr media
and of course, the winner:
1) When he said his bro’s name during orgasm but like it’s no big deal don’t worry about it haha:
Tumblr media
Well done WWX you truly are a clown ❤️
