Quietly Different
I used to think I was just… a bit odd. Not in a particularly dramatic or charming way—just gently, quietly misaligned with the rest of the world. Like everyone else had received an instruction manual at birth, and mine was either in a different language or had been lost in the post. Of course, I functioned. I worked, I studied, and I navigated the world with something vaguely resembling…

Evaluating my book collection earlier today was tiresome. And now I'm just tired, regularly. I almost don't want to post. I could gladly fall into my sedentary routine of using the stupid addictive chatbots. But I promised to try and evaluate my reading taste, and so I will. I also promised myself i'd try and work on my christmas list too, but we'll get to that. So anyway, let's begin the self evaluation:
I find that I almost exclusively enjoy middle grade fiction. Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, The Land of Stories, Alice in Wonderland, etc. This is all stuff predominantly targeted at teenagers. And despite me being 19, it's still the only stuff I seem to enjoy reading. With exceptions, of course. I enjoyed some Sherlock Holmes short stories once (and I did enjoy the Lord of the Rings once, although I feel no deep desire to revisit it soon), but I still don't enjoy a lot of stuff aimed at adults. So yeah. It's clearly middle grade or lower for me. (Also, I haven't really revisited Harry Potter since I learned of the controversies, but it's still an apt example here).
I also like very Lighthearted Fantasy. Again, look at some of the things I've enjoyed most. Percy Jackson, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter. Do you know something shared between these three things? It's that they're not 100% dark and edgy and sad. They have comedy in them. Percy Jackson is a book series that can cover a lot of serious stuff, but it's usually delivered in a fun way. And Alice in Wonderland is just completely comedic, with dozens of weird and humourous scenes. I don't like death in my books (usually if a character i like dies, the whole thing is ruined for me). So I need my stuff to stay somewhere on the funny, optimistic side of things.
And this now shows why it's so hard to find stuff I might like reading. Because there's only so much that can fit within my very narrow range of criteria. So that's why Christmas is sometimes a lot of hassle. I want to put books on my list (books and video games usually end being the only items i can think of, so they fill lots of space), but how can I think of books when it's already mid november and i'm working with my very, very picky tastes? That's the hard part. I'm half tempted to ask for recommendations. Just to see what anyone can share, based on my criteria. And if anyone wants to know what i've read before, there's three posts that I made earlier dedicated to that.
