nature literacy: trees

a tree needs its roots

a tree needs its rain

a tree needs its nutrients

sun, wind, insects to pollinate

a tree remembers, grows, adapts

it ages and if you look inside

wrinkles and rings

will tell you a story

a tree needs rest in the winter

rain in the spring

sunlight in summer

and let's go in the fall

a tree is not embarrassed

about its wrinkles

and the bits of bark

peeling off its trunk

a tree has a symbiotic ecosystem

under the soil

it shares its nutrients

with other trees around

it understands that the health of one

depends on the health of the entire forest

a tree is strong but gentle

wise but humble

when it's fallen or lit ablaze,

it creates the conditions

for new life

mushrooms grow in it's rotting corpse

new plants grow,

animals take shelter

a new ecosystem thrives in appreciation,

the tree is slow and patient.
