straight up lettuce is really yummy and I eat it just straight up
But everybody finds me weird for that 😓
Do you agree that I'm crazy or do you agree that lettuce is delicuous
I need your insight
Real talk you just sound dehydrated. Lettuce is crispy water. But enjoy what you enjoy either way.

this is something a little different again, but after going on a short trip and returning back to the cats being clingier than ever, thought this would be a fun little thing to do. creating this list made me realize that satan really is the most ideal character for me, like ever lol
oddly specific things i've experienced as a cat owner that i think satan would treasure
having to fish a cat hair out of the piping hot tea i just brewed with my fingers and failing multiple times
coming home to the bed i made that morning no longer being made because the cats decided to have a party under the covers
trying to sweep fur off the bed and getting my hands attacked by the cats because they think it's a game
trying to type but being swiped at because the cat really enjoyes the sound of the keyboard and the motions of my hand (that's happening right now lol)
sneezing and getting glared at by one of the cats who was sleeping until you excuse yourself (that also just happened)
a book i had only put down for a second upside down without a book mark being knocked off the table
the blind cats causing any kind of mischief and then thinking they're hidden when really they're trying to hide behind something smaller than them
waking up in the middle of the night to a cat stepping on your stomach and or one laying down on your face
ordering some catnip toys online and the cats attacking the package trying to get to them despite the toys being in about three layers of plastic (and of course the plastic is part of the playing as well)
having to find creative ways to disguise or hide any kind of cables because the cats enjoy them a little too much
getting a bath from the cat with the slinkiest breath but not wanting to stop them because you appreciate the effort
them getting so excited to see me that they flop over so hard you can hear them hitting the ground and start rolling around on the floor
one of the cats favorite foods being leafy greens (he loves kale but refuses to eat iceberg lettuce)
another cat always going to attack one specific charm on my bracelet every time they're sitting in my lap

Food Options for People with Histamine and Salicylate Itolerances
Hi All,
My wife just found out that she has both histamine intolerance and salicylate intolerance. Within days of starting to take antihistamines and eating only very low histamine/salicylate foods, nearly every health problem she's had for the last 15 years (including vision problems, plantar fasciitis, severe GERD, severe brain fog (to the point where we thought she had early onset Alzheimer's), chronic fatigue, and joint pain) literally went away or got markedly better overnight.
The only thing is: If you're really strict on the low histamine and low salicylate diets, it really limits what you can eat. If you're gluten or lactose intolerant as well, that makes things even more difficult.
So I decided to put together some recipes that contain the lowest possible histamine and salicylate burdens. The "safest" list contains only the following: Bamboo shoots, cabbage, celery, iceberg lettuce, peeled white potato, millet, oats, rice, maple syrup, white sugar, distilled white vinegar, saffron, sea salt, canola oil, safflower oil, egg yolk, meat, fish, poultry- very fresh only, true fish only.
Marinade: Mince a stalk of celery, then combine that with a third of a cup white vinegar, a half teaspoon salt, and 2 tbsp maple syrup. Soak your meat or poultry in it before cooking to give it some flavor.
Salad (or anything) Dressing: Whisk together 2 raw egg yolks, 2 tbsp white vinegar, and 2 tbsp canola oil. Salt to taste.
Slaw: Shred a quarter of a cabbage, 3 stalks celery, and 1 can bamboo shoots. Toss in a dressing made from a third of a cup of white vinegar, a tbsp white sugar, and a third of a cup of canola or safflower oil.
Potato and Rice fritters: Cook a cup of white rice until it's soft. Peel and chop a medium potato into 1-in cubes, boil potato until soft, drain and mash. Mix rice and potato, add 2 egg yolks and salt to taste, form into patties, and fry in canola oil.
Potato and Celery Soup: Mince 5 stalks of celery and fry in a tbsp or two of canola oil. Add 4 cups chicken stock (make ahead by boiling a chicken carcass in water with a tbsp vinegar for 3 hours) and 2 large potatoes (peeled and cubed). Boil until the potatoes are soft. Mash the potatoes in the stock, add salt to taste, and serve.
Congee with Pickle: Soak bamboo shoots overnight (or a few hours) in a mixture of 1/3 cup vinegar, a teaspoon salt, and a tbsp sugar. Make a rice or millet soup by cooking grains in about double the water specified on the package. Mash the grain and flavor this soup with salt or sugar to taste. Fry a couple of egg yolks or some fish and place on top. Eat with your bamboo shoot pickle.
Millet Crispies: Pop millet by placing a small amount in a dry frying pan.
Oatmeal: Make oatmeal according to package instructions with salt to taste. Top with fried egg yolks, maple syrup, millet crispies, fried minced celery, slaw, or whatever meat options you have available.
Celery Boats: Shred a cup or so of cooked chicken and toss with salad dressing listed above. Fill stalks of celery with the mixture.
Beef and Cabbage Soup: Fry 3 stalks of minced celery in canola oil at the bottom of a pot. Cut up a half head of cabbage into ribbons and fry with the celery. Remove the celery and cabbage. Put a pound of beef stew meat cut into 1-in chunks (or ground meat of choice) in the pot and brown. Add the celery and cabbage back in, add 6 cups water or stock, and boil with salt to taste until at least the meat is cooked through, about 20 minutes.
Lettuce wraps: Brown a pound of ground chicken in a pan with 3 stalks minced celery, half a cup of chopped bamboo shoots, a tbsp of vinegar and salt to taste. When cooked through, carefully remove leaves of iceberg lettuce from a head. Fill with meat mixture and enjoy. Serve with rice.
Rice Pudding: Whisk together 4 egg yolks, a quarter cup maple syrup, 2 tbsp glutinous rice flour, a pinch of salt, and a scant cup of water. Add this to a pot with 1.5 cups COOKED rice. Stir on medium heat until the rice has absorbed most of the liquid but is still somewhat pour-able. Pour into a small casserole type dish and chill in the fridge to set.
Contains wheat, fresh dairy, onion, parsley:
Beef Stew: Cook 4 stalks minced celery and 1 minced medium onion in butter or ghee until soft. Add 1 lb beef stew meat cut into 1-in chunks and brown. Add 6 cups stock or water and salt and parsley to taste. Whisk together 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup flour and add to mixture. Peel and cut 2 medium white potatoes and add to mixture. Bring to a low boil and simmer until meat and potato chunks are cooked through- about 20 minutes.
Flat breads: Combine 3/4 cup water and 1/4 cup butter, oil, or ghee with 2 cups flour (adjust amounts as needed to create a workable dough). Roll into flat rounds and cook on a dry skillet.
Mashed Potatoes with Onion: Peel and cut 4 large white potatoes into 1-in cubes. Place in a pot with water to cover. Boil for 20-30 minutes. While boiling, mince 1 large white onion and cook in butter, oil, or ghee until caramelized. Drain and mash potatoes. Add onion to potatoes along with a tbsp dried parsley and salt to taste and cream or milk to taste. Stir everything together.
Deep Fried Cheese Curds, Chicken Nuggets, Battered French Fries, or Onion rings: Combine 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour, 1 tbsp onion powder, 1tsp baking soda, and salt to taste. Bring 2-3 inches of canola oil or lard to frying temp. Dump 1lb of cheese curds, 1-in flattened chunks of chicken, sliced white potato, or sliced onion in batter, and spoon them into the frying oil. Fry until crispy and remove onto a plate lined with paper towels. See "Salad Dressing" in previous comment for something to dip in.
Maple Milk: Put a few tbsp maple syrup into a glass of warm or cold milk for a treat.
Cheesy Dessert Tacos: Make flatbreads listed above. Mix together 2 tbsp maple syrup with a half cup plain farmer's cheese or goat cheese. Spread on flat breads and fold like a taco.
Cheesy Dinner Tacos: Combine 2 tsp onion powder and 2 tsp dried parsley with a half cup plain farmer's or goat cheese. Spread on flatbreads. Add shredded cooked chicken and shredded cabbage. Fold like a taco.
Mapley "Crime" Brulee: Whisk together 6 egg yolks, 4 tbsp maple syrup, and 2.5 cups heavy whipping cream in a pot over low heat, whisking continuously until thick. Pour into ramekins, sprinkle with white sugar, bake until set, then broil until the tops are crispy.

I'm back with my happy snape family au 😊
5yr old Severus: Can we go out to get icecream?
Eileen: Did you ask your father?
Severus: He said no.
Eileen: Then why did you ask me?
Severus: He's not the boss of you.
Eileen, internally: It's a trap, it's a trap, it's a trap.
Teen Severus: Protip is you do not feel good about yourself after eating tomato sauce on iceberg lettuce.
Tobias: What's wrong with you??
Severus: I literally JUST said I ate tomato sauce on iceberg lettuce?? Pay attention.
Eileen: No, he means other than that.
Severus: Ohhhhhh.
Severus: I haven't slept in 4 days.
Teen Severus: *gets a text* Oh! It’s my parents.
Teen Lily, excitedly: Did they get me the stuff?
Severus: Yeah, they says they got you the clown costume, the power drill, and 12 gallons of blood.
Lily: Wow! Where’d they find 12 gallons of fake blood?
Severus: You wanted fake blood?
Lily:
Severus: I’ll go call my parents.
Tobias: Why would you give a knife to our 12 yr old son?!
Eileen, shrugging: He felt unsafe.
Tobias: Now I feel unsafe!
Eileen: I’m sorry…
Eileen: Would you like a knife?
*The Snape Family using a Ouija board*
Tobias: Tell us… Is there a spirit in this house?
Spirit, through the board: YES.
Eileen: Great! Rent is due on the first of the month.
Severus: Oh, and movie night is on Friday if you want to hang out.
Spirit: WAIT, WHAT—
Tobias: Okay, how do I look? Be honest.
Eileen: There’s no critic more honest than our 5yr old son!
5yr old Severus: Bad.
Teen Severus: Mom, in your opinion, what is the height of stupidity?
Eileen, turning to Tobias: How tall are you?
Tobias, talking to an 11yr old Severus on his first day at Hogwarts: Well Severus, whenever I’m about to do something, I think ‘would your mother do that?’ and if she would, I do not do that thing.
11yr old Severus: …
Eileen, from behind Tobias: He's not wrong though
Tobias: What do we say when making bread?
10yr old Severus, glumly: That's the dough rising.
Tobias: And what do we NOT say?
Eileen, sadly: That's the yeast fucking.
Eileen: I dropped our son!
Tobias: Eileen, what the fuck!
Eileen: I told your father that his ears turn red when he lie.
Severus: Do they?
Eileen: No.
Severus: Then why did you tell him that?
Eileen: Because I can do this.
Eileen: Hey Tobias! Do you love us?
Tobias, with his hands over his ears: No.

Mean Girls food preference hcs
I have a fun time making silly mundane hcs. I copy and pasted these, then changed a little, from the discord server.
Cady: Enjoy chicken wings so much more than anyone would assume she does. They’re so messy, but they’re so good. Other than that, she mostly enjoys anything. Preference for meat with a meal and really likes cake, not the biggest fan of vegetables of any kind, but will eat them if she Has to. Hates buffets. Fucking hates buffets. Also loves the most random insane candy Janis can find for her to try, unless it’s sour, won’t eat sour food.
Janis: Favourite food is burgers with everything on them, really likes salad vegetables on the burgers and sauces. She loves diner-style food, so milkshakes and fries too. Enjoys very sweet drinks, says she likes black coffee but her favourite is frappes that barely have any coffee in them. Probably drinks an excess of monster energy too. Also cannot cook even a little bit. Unless it’s noodles.
Damian: Loves pizza but will mostly eat anything. He and Janis go to a specific diner all the time and it’s theirs and they always order the same thing. He’s similar in preference to Janis with drinks, but doesn’t like coffee and chocolate together. Often has candy bars or granola bars or little bags of candy in his bag at any given time for either himself, Janis or Cady.
Regina: Canonically likes cheese fries. These are the only things she’d eat in school. Mostly sticks to salads when she’s out with other people for a long time until she’s more comfortable. Enjoys yoghurts but not Greek yoghurt because it just doesn’t taste right. Drinks iced coffees with occasional sugar free vanilla syrup. Enjoys frozen fruit over non-frozen fruit as a little treat. Struggles a lot with eating enough and never has good food in the house because of her mom.
Karen: Very sensory seeking when it comes to foods and loves things that have texture to them. So she eats a lot of salads with iceberg lettuce, baby carrots etc. Enjoys candy a lot too, but nothing that’s too sticky or sticks to her mouth like caramel. Hates pastas that aren’t al dente or rawer and cannot stand lasagne ever at all. If the sauce is too much, she won’t eat it. Doesn’t really enjoy coffee or any hot drinks, but sometimes might drink a milkshake.
Gretchen: Really loves pasta. Loves pasta so much. She especially loves white sauces over marinara type sauce and eats it with garlic bread or breadsticks. Gets cesear salads often, but isn’t actually the biggest fan of them, she just eats them. Not a big drinker of sweet drinks and coffee makes her more anxious, but she still drinks it if she has to. Probably enjoys iced herbal teas when she gets around to trying them. Snacks mostly on plain nuts and bland chips, foods with too much flavour make her feel too much sometimes.
Aaron: Bland. He eats soups a lot, they’re easy to make and easy to eat. As well as grilled cheeses, sometimes some plain pasta and cheese, and he orders lasagna when he’s out. Quite good at cooking, but not great at baking, but he will make chocolate chip cookies sometimes. Mostly drinks water and occasionally coke or hot coffee, doesn’t drink it cold. Much like Gretchen, too strong of flavours make him feel too much. Sticks just to crackers if things are really bad because other food will make him nauseous.
Idk why I haven’t posted these before, it’s not solid hcs, it’s just the general vibes of what they enjoy. Feel free to ask for elaboration!

Growing up in Seattle, our Friday night menu was nearly the same every week: chicken soup, roast chicken slathered in teriyaki sauce, a starchy side and salad. We always had a large bottle of Yoshida teriyaki sauce in the fridge, a fixture in the side door. But why were we eating teriyaki chicken for Shabbat dinner?
Teriyaki chicken is an iconic Seattle dish; it wasn’t until I moved away that I discovered not every city is teeming with great teriyaki shops. The dish is rooted in Japanese cuisine: Teriyaki is a traditional Japanese style of cooking where a protein is cooked over a flame while it is basted in a sauce made of soy sauce, sugar, sake and/or mirin. “Yaki” means grill, and “teri” means shine. The sticky, sweet teriyaki sauce most Americans are familiar with was developed by Japanese American immigrants.
Seattle’s version of teriyaki deviates from its Japanese roots thanks to a man named Toshihiro Kasahara. In 1976, Kasahara opened Toshi’s Teriyaki Restaurant, which quickly became a wildly successful Seattle lunch spot. Kasahara inspired a wave of teriyaki establishments across the city and the region, helping make the dish ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle-style teriyaki is loaded with ginger and garlic, and instead of basting the meat, teriyaki is more often made by marinating the meat in sauce overnight. It’s typically served with steamed rice and an iceberg lettuce salad with gingery, tangy dressing. The store-bought sauce my family used was also developed by a Seattle resident, Kyoto-born Junki Yoshida.
Food in the diaspora is always influenced by our neighbors, and teriyaki has become a welcome staple in Jewish homes, particularly across the Pacific Northwest. This recipe is designed to give you all the flavors and char that great teriyaki chicken offers, with the ease of preparing a complete meal on a sheet pan. The sauce is salty, thick, gingery and sweet, and as the chicken cooks, it releases its juices and flavors to the surrounding vegetables. You can substitute homemade sauce for your favorite premade bottle, and you can ditch the oven and cook this on the grill for extra char. Served with a steaming heap of short grain rice, it makes a delicious, simple meal for Shabbat, or any day of the week.
Note: You can swap drumsticks for chicken thighs, but if you would like to swap for boneless, skinless breasts the cook time may be slightly longer. The dish reheats well in the microwave, stovetop or oven.

My Weight Loss & Fitness Strategy:
Just like 2 years ago, I'm going to keep it simple.
Fitness:
Straight cardio no chaser. Not going to focus on strength building or weights at the moment. I'm going to be doing aerobic walking (via my Walk At Home subscription) and I will be doing an average of 3 miles every day (sometimes it may be less, like 2 miles, other times it will be more, like 5 miles. But every day minus rest day I will be doing anywhere from 30 min - 1hr of exercise). I'll also be adding in some 10 minute "warm ups/light walks" throughout the day, not so much as additional exercise but just so that my body can get some movement after it's been sitting in one place for hours.
I also know that I need to incorporate stretching and flexibility workouts into my plan as well. I always do a quick stretch at the end of my workouts but I definitely need to fit in some longer ones as well.
Eating/Diet:
This is where it may get questionable for some people, so let me state my disclaimer again: i'm not encouraging nor recommending anyone to do what i'm about to do. this is simply what worked for me.
So as far as eating goes, I will mostly be eating salads with an iceberg lettuce base with vegetables and protein toppings. I will of course still have some indulgences (I actually think it's important that you do, restrictive dieting is one way to regain your weight back quickly once the diet is over) but for the most part I will be eating salads and having certain veggies and fruits.
If this list seems rather small (especially compared to 2 years ago when i was also having oatmeal, green smoothies, etc. ) it's because I have now been diagnosed with SIBO, candida and chronic constipation (with is closely related to IBS). although I'm not going to focus on healing my digestive issues at this time, I also don't want to eat foods that are going to trigger them or make them worst.
I'm currently researching and looking more into this so my diet will most likely be altered along the way.
And that's all folks. I'll be posting daily updates with pics of my food (sometimes). This blog may get a bit fitblr-y for a while lol.

Therian Tips : : Part 1
• Spiders
Tumblr media
Spiders (Coming from someone who is one + owns multiple)
Quads and gear:
Masks are great! You can find printable ones online for design ideas if you want to make them yourself. For gear you can buy realistic spider Halloween costumes online, but they tend to be quite expensive - if you’re on a budget I recommend looking at “cheap and easy spider Halloween costumes for kids” on YouTube!
Quads get a bit complicated because it depends on what kind of spider you are… The vast majority of spiders conserve energy by burrowing/staying in web hides. So there really isn’t a lot to do - however you could practice slow crawling — and jumping - if you’re a jumping spider. Slow and simple parkour on all fours is also a fun idea! Just make sure you’re being responsible and careful.
Food:
Food is quite difficult for us spiders because their diet consists entirely of insects….. so here are some tips —
- Sweet: Gummy worms, Gummy’s with jelly fillings, Mini chocolate wafer bites, Chocolate/Yogurt covered nuts or raisins, Grapes, Banana chips
- Savoury: Cherry tomatoes, Small pieces of iceberg lettuce, mini breadsticks, scrape out the inside of cucumbers (don’t waste them obviously!) and slurp em up !!
- Only do this with food it won’t stick too — but if you have any, get some of that cheap spider web stuff they have around Halloween and wrap your food in it! (This works best with things like vegetables and fruit!) it’s really validating…
Connecting:
- I cannot stress this enough .. BUILD DENS!! They’re so fun and Spiders absolutely love to burrow, dig and hide.
- Do vocals ! Yes..yes..I hear you - spiders don’t make sound do they?? Well that’s where you’re wrong! Lots of spiders often hiss in self defence — Male wolf spiders make drumming sounds — Wolf spiders can also chirp!! Like crickets! However it can also be described as a purring sound

Is there a Spanish equivalent to "keep your cool" or of remaining calm under pressure? Cool as a cucumber 🥒?
The general expression for "keep your cool" is mantener la calma literally "to keep one's calm"
As far as cool as a cucumber, it's a bit difficult to say if there's an exact expression. The closest 1:1 expression is como si tal cosa which is more literally like "as if it were nothing", or "as if it were any (old) thing" - talking as if someone can do something while being unbothered and as if it's the easiest thing in the world; the tal cosa is sort of like "a thing of no importance", though it's literally "such a thing" it comes off as "any old thing" like not important or exciting
The very literal dictionary word for it would be despreocupado/a which is "unworried" - it's half "carefree" and half "unconcerned"; it can be "happy-go-lucky" or just someone who doesn't care what other people think
-
There are some other options but they're a bit all over the place
First I have to say if you look it up you'll see fresco/a como una lechuga "fresh as lettuce", which is not generally what that expression means; it CAN mean that, but not always
While it can be "unbothered" it usually means "well-rested" - so it's more like "fresh as a daisy", it's like you slept well and you're doing great [if you look up memes of fresco/a como una lechuga a lot of them are like zombies or people half asleep so it's like "yeah I'm doing great"]
...
The second word that might show up is campante and that one is not exactly that... it usually means "carefree" or it means "smug", like it's literally "unbothered" in a good way, and in the negative smug way. Using campante can imply that someone is acting in a way that is full of confidence maybe even shamelessly, as if they don't care or as if it doesn't worry them even if maybe it should, so it can imply arrogance
...
I think the only other one that can be maybe used is ser un témpano (de hielo) or frío/a como un témpano (de hielo)
That has sort of the same thing but it comes out more like calling someone "cold" or "emotionless"
Literally it's "to be an iceberg" or "to be cold as an iceberg"
[note: el témpano can be "iceberg" or "a floe", the full thing is el témpano de hielo but it's sometimes shortened because it almost always refers to ice anyway so the hielo "ice" can sometimes feel redundant]
You can use this to say "it's really cold out" or something is "ice cold", but it can be used with people to be "they're cold as ice" as in emotionless, practical, maybe cruel, so it's not always "cool as a cucumber"

I feel like fandom activism has caused so, so many brains to rot.
How in the world is writing more fics featuring non-white characters going to show anything to the people behind End OTW Racism? And why in the world should I have an obligation to write it?
I write fics because I enjoy writing and immediately sharing with an audience, because I like characters someone else came up with, because constructing a little space for my creativity in fics gives me far less stress than thinking about creating original novels. It's not my job, and it's certainly not activism.
This idea that people should at least write one or two fics about characters of color because it shows they're not racist or because, somewhat, this stuff fights fandom racism, is absolutely unhinged.
I was in a fandom with a main character of color, and I had to leave because people were constantly at each other's throats and harassing one another because writing this character in any way would get you called a racist. He bottoms? Racist. He tops? Racist. He's described with his hair cut this way? Racist. He's vegetarian? Racist. He's not vegetarian? Racist. Literally you couldn't fucking win because the fandom split in two major groups at its beginning, and since then, if you write him in a certain way, you'll have one side accuse you of being racist, and if you write him this other way, it's gonna be the other side who accuses you! I got rape threats over this shit!
This is insanity! I work a shitload of hours a week and come to fandom to relax, reblog stupid posts, retweet porn drawings, listen to the worst Spotify playlists known to mankind, and share the fics I spend too much time working on.
Why the fuck should I treat fandom like it's a cause I should give my life to? I don't want to eat my vegetables because the vegetable you're presenting me with is unseasoned iceberg lettuce: it doesn't interest me, it doesn't have a flavor I'm seeking, and it holds no nutritional value whatsoever.
Stop pretending that things can be changed by writing more fics about that Star Wars character or that set of Marvel movies, because you know damn well they won't: you'll just get harassed more, and when you'll delete/orphan all your fics because just the idea of logging into Ao3 will make you want to anxiety puke, the people who supported all these movements will go to their Tumblrs and Twitters and whatever other socials the hip kids use and write shit like "Thank god that horrible racist left! People like them should never dare to write fics about POC ever again! Whoever harassed them out of the fandom did the right thing."

Hey, for any of my little sibs trying to learn to eat salads/vegetables but running into a lot of unhappiness/failure/sensory issues, I recently started learning to eat veggies after a lifetime of struggling due to autism and sensory issues, and I have some tips that I’ve collected along the way!
Forget all about the “healthiest varieties” or “most nutritional salads” elitism.
A lot of that talk is based on bogus science or half-truths to begin with, but even for anything that’s true, you’re trying to eat in a way that is sustainable for you. You don’t need to be like anybody else. If you like iceberg lettuce, screw the people who say “well that doesn’t have any nutritional value”. It’s fiber and roughage if nothing else! You like a lot of dressing or add ins and people tell you that isn’t a real salad/isn’t a healthy salad? It’s more vegetables than no vegetables! It gets the greens in your body! Do your thing, you don’t deserve guilt (external or internal) for figuring out your own path.
This is about habit forming and breaking bad associations to form better ones.
Think of this as practice! I eat salads nearly daily when available because I genuinely look forward to them now, but I used to want to retch at just the thought of salad. When I used to think of salads, I always thought of being a kid and trying not to gag while forcing sensory hell so that adults wouldn’t get mad at me. It was punishing for me, and it took a lot of gentle work to change that association! So if you hate salads, really try to identify why. Are they bland and tasteless to you? Conversely, are the bitter flavors too strong? Is it a textural thing? Do you have some highly negative experiences with them in the past?
Don’t force yourself to keep trying something you know you hate.
I personally can’t stand a lot of “ultra healthy” salads that have a lot of different textures/flavors mixed in, and years of trying to suffer through salads like that never made me like them more. Back to the first point again, forget about what you’re “supposed” to be eating and eat what you find the least repulsive tbh.
The greens you choose can make a massive difference, so try a lot of different things!
This is especially important if texture or flavor is an issue for you. Personally I find iceberg lettuce the “easiest” because it has a very mild taste. I started out my adventures in learning to eat salad eating EXCLUSIVELY iceberg lettuce. Butter lettuce or romaine (especially romaine hearts) are others that are popular for being pretty palatable, and I’ve come to love them! And you don’t even HAVE to have lettuce! You can have cabbage, beets, carrots, whatever! Pick a vegetable you like and search for salad recipes using it!
Find a dressing you really like and drench that bad boy if you need to!
Some people really like ranch, or poppyseed dressing, or vinaigrettes, or even sweet dressings with honey and fruit! You can use mustard or honey in dressings! Look up different types of salad dressings and try them all out if you want. Personally, I really like zingy dressings like Italian vinaigrettes or blue cheese, but everyone’s different. You can make a lot of dressings at home, too, and if you have the stuff already it can be a cheap way to find what you like. I know dressing freaks some people out, but referencing my very first point again; some salad is way better than no salad. You may even eventually find yourself able to use less and less once you’re more accustomed to eating salad! So use as much as you need, whether it’s just for now or forever.
Toppings! Salads are allowed to be goodies with obstacles!
Use a protein like chicken or fish (I like tuna a lot) or crumbled bacon, use croutons, hummus, little cubes of cheese or shredded cheese, sliced hard boiled eggs, whatever! If there’s vegetables that you know you like, put those in! I love some sliced cucumber or shredded carrots in my salads. Some people do nuts like almonds or cashews in their salads, some people use chickpeas and corn from a can, and if you’re feeling super adventurous you can try some fruit to sweeten things up! If you like variety then mix warm foods and cold foods, creamy textures and crunchy textures! Make it totally your own. Personally, I’ll sometimes eat around my croutons so that once I’ve eaten all of my greens I have a big, crunchy reward. There’s no rules for how you have to eat something!
Conversely, be as simple as you need to be.
If you need to get used to salads by eating just iceberg lettuce and ranch for a while, you don’t need to be embarrassed! You don’t have to throw the kitchen sink at your salad, even if that’s what helps some others! This is about what works for you.
Don’t be afraid to have salad ingredients… not as a salad!
You can make a green smoothie by blending ingredients if texture is your big issue! Or make a fruit smoothie with some spinach or lettuce thrown in to help you ease into it. Or try dicing up some lettuce, cabbage, and a preferred vegetable or two (avocado, bell pepper, tomato, or cucumber would all work!). Drizzle that with a generous amount of dressing or sauce, and you can use it as a chip dip! Tortilla chips work especially well for this. Or maybe make a vegetable wrap in an actual tortilla? Or throw some chopped up vegetables in your next soup. Even if it’s as simple as putting some lettuce, carrots, or tomatoes into a sandwich, that’s awesome too!
Even outside of salads, experiment with texture for vegetables!
You can roast most vegetables on a sheet pan in the oven (or in an air fryer) for a crispy and crunchy experience! Or you can boil or steam them on a stovetop (or in the microwave) to different levels of softness; you can get most vegetables pretty mushy with enough time, if crunchy textures are hard for you! Looking up vegetarian versions of your favorite meat-including dishes can sometimes also offer great ideas for getting different textures out of vegetables! Try everything that you think you might like: grilling, griddling, roasting, steaming, boiling, sautéing, braising, stir frying, and blanching (which also helps reduce bitterness!) are all different methods to look into, and different methods have different results with different vegetables!
Big takeaway…
Be patient and kind with yourself. Working through food aversions is hard. The goal is gently pushing/testing your boundaries and expanding your comfort zone, NOT forcing yourself. Forcing yourself into extreme discomfort, distress, or pain typically only makes aversions worse! So it’s in your best interest to be patient and go as slowly as you need to. Be proud of yourself for trying, and don’t let anyone (including yourself) make you feel shame for doing what you can.
And obligatory disclaimer:
Please don’t get discouraged if none of these tips work for you! This isn’t an exhaustive list, and I’m not any kind of professional. This is just a mix of tips I’ve seen online, and what worked for myself and my own sensory issues, and I’m still learning more about myself all the time! If you’re struggling, there’s still more out there! You can achieve your goals, I believe in you. 💖

I am eating a salad, which is reasonably nutritious and reasonably tasty, even though a year ago I would have said salad is gross. But I tried one, because I was miserably trying to lose some weight*, and I discovered they can be good? They can be good when they aren't a chunk of nasty yellow iceberg lettuce.
I feel like there's some sort of greater lesson where I'd like to share this philosophy of trying things you think you don't like, IF you would like to like them, figure out what specifically scares you/repels you and find the training-wheels version of that thing (a low IBU beer, a salad with a bunch of cranberries and chicken and stuff in it, california rolls) that does not have that problem or hides it well, but I don't know how to articulate it so this is what you get.
*(all bodies are beautiful, but a. [tedious unpacking of my relationship with my own body] and b. I couldn't fit my wedding ring)
