Having fictives is so weird sometimes. Our little sibling is playing Minecraft and put on a weird Shadow skin and kept saying goofy/mildly incoherent stuff about him (this kid's absolutely AuDHD like we are), well of course Shads gets front triggered by that and I had to mentally restrain him from telling off this 9 year old for disrespect 😭

Somethiing that allows us to heal as a system is writing interactions that happen in headspace or place into words what we're doing as individual people and how that affects others

It's similar to a diary, which we also have, but more narrative

Here's an example from one of our recent entries that embody the two types pretty well:

“You haven’t eaten. The body is fatigued.”  Silence.  “Bakugo threatens to force feed you,” Shadow continues, arms crossed naturally upon his chest, the white puffs of his fur hugging the limbs, thick and fluffy for the winter.  Atreus senses remnants of adoration and affection from afar regarding the change in look. They smile softly at another’s emotions as their own spike of anxiety burns the back of the reincarnate’s throat. “There isn’t anything he can make right now.”  “There is plenty,” Shadow reasons, images of ramen, eggs and seasonings appearing in their mind's eye. 

Guilt washes over Atreus, their eyes boring holes into the circular wooden table before them, Shadow watching them intently as images flicker of well cooked meals, soups and rice before they promptly disappear. Shadow says nothing about the quick closing of their imagery-based communication, an action much too common much to everyone’s chagrin when interacting with their Warden about anything regarding themselves.  Though, it frankly makes reading them easier at times. It was all pattern and recognition, the endless repeating tells. The lack of their bird-like features, hidden away so no one could gaze at their uncared for state, their lack of eye contact and words easily testaments to bubbling shame, guilt, and fear, tense body ridged from unease, frustration and stress.  It wasn’t new, unfortunately. But the light banter and response meant it wasn’t as bad as it could be. Such times usually meant that no one could reach them, find them. Headspace and their abilities intertwined more tightly than Atreus would ever admit outloud, shielding everyone from them while continuing to bare everyone else's' existences.  They didn’t seem to know it consciously either, only adding to the struggles to reach the avian, though never entirely fruitless. Atreus was quick to ease others, even if it meant taking care of themselves to pleasing someone else, to place less of themselves on others shoulders. 

Usually, placing interactions, events, feelings, and our thoughts into words like this (if not poetry for some of us) helps build stronger connections with each other and understand one another much more intimately

A lot gets lost in our brain, but when it's solidified into something like this, it is much less likely to escape our memory or be brushed off

wylan is SUCH an interesting character. he's kind of shy and quiet, he's awkward, he's learned to keep quiet and try to stay unnoticed. but he's stubborn and fearless, he doesn't back down and he has a lot of spine. he is so interesting.

this conversation is especially interesting as somebody who reads a lot into wylan's backstory (as a victim of ableist abuse myself) because there's a lot of moments where it almost seems like he's lying or intentionally holding back. almost as if he's been trained to cover for his father and downplay his life. i'm thinking about the comment about being beaten until you can't walk (even if you don't believe wylan was ever abused physically, his response no longer rings true after crooked kingdom! i personally believe he was physically abused but never beaten. he was hit, he was thrown around, he was screamed at, he was insulted and mocked, he was locked in his room, he was deprived of food, but he was never beaten - which makes it especially easy to downplay.) and the bit about how he would NEVER have dared to snoop around in his father's office - do you really think it's because he believed it to be wrong? wylan has strong morals, but i don't think that's all there is to it, he's willing to compromise on his morals to survive if he must and he has his moments of rebellion. i personally believe it was because he would never have dared because he knew the consequences.

edit: somebody in the notes pointed out that he canonically was beaten, which means my initial assumption that i was trying to correct was accurate. i'm not going to edit my wording just because i think emphasizing the kind of abuse that can happen outside of being beat is important, but i'm more aware of that now. still not far enough in my reread.

this is even further proof that wylan was lying in so many little ways throughout six of crows, in a way covering for his father instinctually without knowing.

essentially, i think what a lot of the crows chalk down to wylan being a coddled newbie is partly correct, but it's also a combination of being extremely traumatized and wylan's own peculiar brand of humor and strong morals. which isn't necessarily a revolutionary idea, but it's interesting nonetheless. people tend to focus on one singular aspect of this trinity in favor of acknowledging all three, which has always bothered me if i'm being honest.

"wylan pressed his lips into a thin line. kaz couldn't tell if the kid was frightened or furious and he didn't much care." this quote from chapter 13 is like. a really succinct summary of wylan's character.

Systober Day 9 - First Introject - Martin (He/They) Well, we're still a bit behind, but there's always time to catch up! Vivien here; back at the front after taking a break, this was done by me pretty much exclusively. Day 7 and 8 were both drawn by Terry. Martin might not be our truly "first" introject, but we have no way of telling how many others might have come before. There's evidence in the Inner World that we've been through multiple "boom and bust" cycles, of alters splitting in large numbers then either fusing or going dormant - but the system was "closed off" for so long that we don't know how many times this could have happened. But it didn't really surprise anyone when we ended up with an introject of Martin Blackwood from The Magnus Archives. His backstory was just far too relatable for our system not to use in some way, and he ended up forming out of the various traumatic memories that (at the time) made up The Red Forest. The cat ears and tail didn't appear until later, but it's not uncommon for alters of The Magbox to change form when we unlock or integrate more memories and "elaborate". Anyway - Martin standing on the observation deck of our airship home. Proud of this one, haven't attempted proper light/shadow in quite a while. On to Day 10! - Vivien
