online fandom is so fun because we’ll be talking about very serious character moments and analyzing them and stuff and there will be a lull in the discussion and someone will be like “and then they fuck about it” and then we’re all like yeah and then they fuck about it

Tumblr is super big on the "I didn't say it was good, I said I liked it" but really need to discover the value in its opposite of "I didn't say it was bad, I said I hated it".

You can acknowledge that something is good, great, a masterpiece even, and just straight-up not enjoy it.

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.

Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?

What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?

Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

Ok, this is canon in my heart now.

I'm a very big fan of the “one of the ways Batman fights crime is by making the bad guys afraid he could be anywhere”. The “he’s not in every shadow, but he could be in any shadow” thing.

I think it would be fun to mix that with the way the rest of the batfam is drawn when they're in shadows:

the glowy eyes and splashes of vibrant colour, especially with Nightwing's symbol looking like it's actually reflective.

So now I'm thinking:

imagine if Gothamites realized that dangerous people get really uneasy when they keep seeing things that, out of the corner of their eye, might look like a vigilante. To the point that they avoid areas where, let's say, an old poster on the wall is just that shade of yellow that keeps jumpscaring them every time they turn. Or that old trash can that still has a patch of green paint that hasn't peeled away yet. Not even realizing what makes them nervous, just knowing that a particular place makes them jumpy. Stuff like that.

So to keep themselves a little safer Gothamites just start… adding little things like that in their neighborhoods. Nothing that outright references the Bats - stuff like that might get vandalised or just lose the effect if it's recognised, but things like:

- plants on window sills in flower pots or vases in bright colors

- little shiny trinkets in the windows that just might be mistaken for a flash of a utility belt

- colorful curtains get very popular for children's bedrooms

- someone sticking a piece of blue reflective vinyl on a chimney visible from the street, so that as you walk you see a little flash of electric blue when the light from streetlights hits it just right

- people painting a pair of dots with glow-in-the-dark white paint high up on walls by fire escapes or in dark alleys, that look like glowing eyes

So basically I want Gothamites to invent protective charms and amulets which have exactly zero supernatural properties and aren’t intended to have any, but still very much work lmao

Orpheus and Eurydice, Charles makes a deal to go to hell for Edwin and can't turn back, but he does, of course he does

but instead of dooming Edwin - it causes Charles to forget about his feelings for Edwin

that was the price he had to pay to get Edwin out of there

he went down there for Edwin, fully in love, but the moment he turns the love evaporates, leaving only his platonic love behind, and it's strong enough that it still makes sense to Charles why he went to hell in the first place

Charles' platonic love still shouts "love you too" through him and then he's sorta confused because of a weird feeling of a void in his chest, so just to stall, he grasps onto a memory of a thought, something about Orpheus and Eurydice, but his thoughts are all jumbled, so he just jokes about it, maybe that's why he was thinking about it, yeah?

(that's why we see that Edwin's a bit disappointed after Charles says "can't say I'm in love with you back", because Edwin could have sworn that there's been something in Charles' eyes when he's looked at Edwin lately)

Charles goes to the roof to think about everything, then Edwin asks if his confession made Charles uncomfortable and it's such a quick reflex to say no, it's the opposite actually because thinking about it kinda makes him giddy, but Charles is not sure why

(it wasn't even the Night Nurse who took Charles' feelings, it's just a rule of the underworld, not enforced by a Someone per say, it's just how it works - taking something out of hell requires a price to be paid, when Edwin escaped for the first time he lost the face of his mother, gone like a faded photograph)

but if we know something about Charles is that he attached himself to Edwin pretty quickly, didn't he, so why not use this opportunity to make him fall in love with Edwin at first sight again

so it goes: Charles loves Edwin. Turns. Forgets. Feels confused. But also oh my god has Edwin ever looked more beautiful than standing in front of him now? So vulnerable and trusting and lovely

they get out of hell. Charles looks at Edwin and gets butterflies in his stomach. Feels like he's seeing Edwin for the first time?? And wow, where has he been for the past 30 years (right here. In love), maybe he really will figure it out because wow "can't say I'm in love with you back"??? Charles is already doubting it

which is both beautiful and really funny - Charles being cursed by the rules of hell but also overcoming it in 2-5 business days because hey, Edwin's fit, isn't he

Charles' memories unlock as soon as he falls properly in love with Edwin again, and then he grabs Edwin because holy shit he needs to tell him about all of the years he's spent pining and yearning for Edwin to return his feelings
