we say we have seven alters. that means seven alters that are solid enough to be given profiles and have enough distinctive autonomy to be able to interact as individuals in places like this online. how many actual alters we have???? probably at LEAST 20, more likely pushing 30. Someone gets ‘solidified’ every few months.. generally. But that doesn’t mean they only just appear then. Most ‘new’ alters have been around for at least months, appearing in fragments or blurry periods or strange flashes of emotions before they actually settle into a proper identity. And the few dozen that haven’t done that may never. Or they might. Who knows.
and that’s fine !!
one of the most important things about dissociative identity disorder and generally being a system that i wish people would understand is that it truly isn’t as cut and dry as it may seem for member count.
you’ll see people who say they have “six alters” and then immediately assume it’s six fully fleshed out equal individuals with no confusion or fuzziness regarding identity. that’s simply not true in a majority of cases, as i have seen.
most systems still VERY much deal with confusion regarding potential splits, go through dissociative episodes where they’re unsure of who they are, sometimes feel no attachment towards any identities, feel like they might have split and then suddenly that person is gone, unsure if alters they haven’t heard from often have gone dormant, not sure how to react when alters do come out of dormancy, etc.
it’s not a fun feeling and it’s genuinely unfair in certain situations to force systems to list every single alter to you with full certainty, as if it will never change. because it will. for so many different reasons, systems will grow, they will shrink, they will fuse, they will develop. you can’t expect the person with the dissociative disorder and lack of core identity to be able to keep up a perfected list of forever, it’s simply impossible. you may have alters who stick with you, but that doesn’t mean changes won’t happen.
and systems who may be reading this — please don’t feel bad. you are not a hassle, you are not a headache, and you are not an inconvenience for simply coping with something like this. it’s out of your control and the only thing you can do is continue to cope to find ways to help yourself retrain from these reactions. please don’t allow yourself to be harmed by others who don’t understand what you are going through. there are people who will accept and love you for who you are, all of you.
past, present, and future.

Common things in DID that no one likes to talk about
- switches that feel like you’re turning into someone else rather than them taking control (non-possessive switching)
- being unable to recognize amnesia until something requires you to remember something you forgot
- staying in the front for weeks at a time
- being unable to communicate with alters internally (this is so common why does everyone act like this is weird?)
- feeling like you don’t have any problems because you feel disconnected from them
- constant denial
- rapid identity, label, and appearance changes
- comorbidities, particularly personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and the schizophrenia spectrum
- autism (there is science pointing towards autistic people being more susceptible to trauma)
- disliking your system
- wanting final fusion

"What's your favorite type of music?"
*sweats in DID* "U-uhm... I- I listen to everything, depending on my mood :D"
The moods sitting in the back of my head watching me: "No, no, they've got a point"

If I tell you I’m a fictive and tell you my source, that’s not your sign to go ahead and start telling me how much you want to fuck my source.
You’re weird as shit.

NOT supportive to your system friends:
- "can you make [alter] front?"
- always asking who's fronting
- getting upset when they can't remember something
VERY supportive to your system friends:
- giving them money
- "here's $50 for you"
- relinquishing your money to them
- offering them money

I've had to tell three newer syscoursers this today ALONE so I might as well make a general statement about it.
If you get asks from someone trying to say that willogenic systems aren't real and suggesting they're a form of transID or similar nonsense DO NOT ENGAGE. This person is a very well-known troll. They've been going for literal months at this point. The only time they stopped is when they stopped getting engagement.
But I think they're getting smarter and moving on to newer syscoursers who just don't know better yet, because all of the seasoned syscoursers have already learned this lesson. So be careful, don't feed the trolls and don't give them the satisfaction of your engagement. Y'all got better time to spend and you're not going to convince anyone, unfortunately. I appreciate all the good-faith attempts though <3
