Understanding the Basics of Nutrition and Balanced Diets
Nutrition refers to the science of how our bodies utilize food to sustain life and promote growth. It involves the study of essential nutrients, their sources, functions, and the body's requirements for optimal health. These essential nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Each of these nutrients plays a unique role in our bodies and contributes to various physiological functions.
Section 2: The Role of Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats
Carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy. They are found in foods like grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Understanding the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates, as well as their impact on blood sugar levels, is crucial for maintaining stable energy levels throughout the day.

I’d like to be clear to new followers that I’m not vegan? My fish cruelty post has moved into vegetarian/vegan circles and I’m getting a bunch of new followers so I don’t want someone getting pissed later because I post about what I eat.
I grew up on a farm, I believe that humans are interconnected in the food chain with other plants and animals. I believe we have a duty to reduce any undue suffering and allow any animal in our care to thrive, but I also believe that to eat an animal you raised with care is part of the food chain and eating it without waste is respect.
These are my beliefs and choices and I’m not knocking anyone else’s, but I’d like for it not to become a hot button later.
#ramblies#I also think if a flock of chickens is treated well it’s so disrespectful to waste eggs they lay#the chicken will lay regardless of a rooster being present and tossing the egg is so wasteful in my eyes#I had a vegan in my nutrition class insist that it was cruel to eat eggs for that reason#and I’m fully against factory farms but I get eggs from backyard chickens who never get fertilized#so it’s a very odd sticking point to me but I respect that it’s a choice people make

do game birds (namely ducks) have more nutritional content than songbirds? my modeled region has so, so many ducks
They have a caloric value comparable to chicken! 5.9 kcal specifically, which I round to 6 to make a good middle-estimate for avian prey. Quails are fantastic prey, clocking at 6.8, balanced out by the fact they are smaller and lighter than you think they are.
(A wild common quail is only 70 to 120g. Birds are light because of their hollow bones.)
When I find good data for the value of a bat I can truly test my hypothesis, but my working theory is that flight is so energy intensive that it means the meat has to have a higher value. But again that's just my guess.
#clan culture#Nutrition guide#Bone babble#So yes ducks are a really good prey. Their eggs are also very valuable.

so many meals can be bolstered by just throwing a handful of frozen spinach in there while you cook it. scrambled eggs? add some spinach. ramen? add some spinach. mac and cheese? add some spinach, baby!
#eliot posts#specifically i use a bag of frozen spinach so you can just dump some into the pot#the frozen blocks do NOT work for this purpose#unless you wanna add way too much spinach or go at the block with a gd icepick#and i prefer frozen to fresh bc fresh needs to be Kept Track Of or else it will go yucky in your fridge#frozen spinach is fine with being forgotten about for months#idk how much nutrition the spinach actually adds but it at least makes the meals FEEL less depressing#and prevents the dawning horror of ''dear god i cannot actually remember the last time i ate a vegetable'' from occurring#this is no longer a sad 30 cent brick of ramen in sad packet broth. now there is leaf! sometimes even egg/onion too!#i will still eat it directly out of the pot bc i am too depressed to clean a bowl tho.

Do ferrets need a raw meat diet or is fancy cat food ok for them?? I'm getting conflicting answers, I hear a lot of people are against raw feeding dogs and ferrets, but a lot say kibble is bad
Anon.
Hope this helps lol.
#There are diets made for ferrets specifically but many are. Questionable.#I recommend Mazuri brand ferret pellets for the best nutritional balance#but yes certain cat foods are sufficient you just really need to know how much protein and taurine and such and such#to make sure you’re getting a good food#feeding raw makes it very hard to balance nutrition and may expose your ferret to food borne illness#you can offer frozen then thawed mice and such and cooked eggs as supplements and treats but not as the main diet

i feel replete with nutrients
#nutrition people are right about Bone Broth in the sense that. it is good for you to have delicious collagens and lipids and salts liquid#but forcing yourself to drink it seems like overkill if you're not into that#you should eat it in a soup. that has both matzo balls and egg noodles and also some carrots and alliums and such#then you are happy due to the soup. and have matzo and noodle and egg nutrients as well#important dietary advice from a professional tissue biologist :)#box opener

how are duck eggs better for baking, do they taste better in sweet foods than chicken eggs? ive never had them before
OH man okay, so, duck eggs are very fun! They're bigger, they have thicker shells and membranes, and the egg itself is Eggier. It just tastes more like Egg. Egg Times Two. They're also a just structurally different- they have more fat and more protein, and the whites of the egg are a lot thicker. Chicken eggs, in comparison to duck eggs, are more... watery???? And the yolks are way smaller than duck yolks. So when we had ducks, I'd normally use duck eggs if I was gonna bake something, bc the lower water content and higher fat/protein content in them just seemed to really help things turn out better. More flavor and more structure.
#since they Are bigger I could also use them for unusual recipe conversions if I wanted#like a REALLY big duck egg#could be helpful if I want to 1 1/2 a recipe#where the recipe calls for 1 egg so time-and-a-half-ing it would mean I need an egg and a half#but a really big duck egg can work for that really well#but yeah. and people say they're healthier / more nutrient dense which like yeah I can see that#just bc like. that raised protein and bigger yolk has GOT to translate to different nutritional value#sergle answers
