Review: Lód - Jacek Dukaj
Alright, so it's a little weird to write an English review of a book that to my knowledge wasn't translated into English (I found some news from 2017 that it was supposed to be translated and released in Great Britain, but no idea if the project was completed), but here it goes. Perhaps this will inspire someone to translate it.
Lód ("Ice") is an epic science fiction alternative history book. It's set in 1924 in Warsaw and later Siberia, except the World War I never happened. After the Tunguska event in 1908 Siberia was covered in a phenomenon known as Ice, meaning it's winter all year round, and icy "creatures" are wandering and spreading it around the world (though outside of Siberia Ice isn't everywhere, only in the places where icy "beings" are congregating). The appearance of Ice causes a development of a whole new heavy industry and Russia is profiting from it. I think that's enough of the worldbuilding explanation.
The main character, Benedykt Gierosławski, is a mathematician and logician. He also doesn't exist. His journey in search of his father takes him from Warsaw, then on Trans-Siberian Railway to Irkutsk. He meets many different people, all wanting different things, all having different political and personal agendas when it comes to the future of Ice. Some want it to stay, some want it gone. Some even worship it in various sects. There are many factions fighting each other and Gierosławski is in the middle of it, trying to solve all the people and mysteries and problems with his mathematical calculations.
The book is a long epic, it's 1046 pages, but it's intensely intellectual and has a good pacing. The intrigues go on every level - political, economical, interpersonal, scientific, philosophical, religious. And it's all connected with each other, influences each other. The author was crazy enough to invent a whole fictional science of Ice, which is called "black physics", as it is discovered and explained by Nikola Tesla who is a major character in the book. Maybe I need to read more scifi, but I think this is the first time someone wrote about science that doesn't exist in a way that makes it sound plausible, explaining how it's studied, what are the rules of it, how they run their experiments and what they learn from it. Some of it went over my head, as I wasn't great at physics in school, but it all just sounds legit. Hat's off to the author!
Another thing I really appreciate about the book is how immersive it feels. It's a book written in the beginning of XXI century that feels like it was written a hundred years before. The language, the detailed descriptions, the ideas, the characters and their behaviours all create the unique atmosphere that transports the reader back in time to these distant places, into frozen lands and first class compartments where aristocrats dwell.
I wish I could explain the philosophical discussion in Lód, but I'd have to write a separate book about it, but what's the point if that book is already written by the author? ;) In short, the black physics and philosophy of Truth and Lie are deeply connected, like two sides of the same coin. The Lie is more true than the Truth - that's a tagline on the back cover of the book and I think it sums it up the best. All in all, the description on the back cover is astonishingly accurate for this book.
Lód is a story so complex that I'm sure I didn't catch all it conveys on my first read, but I'm sure it will hold up on the re-read. There's a lot to rediscover and rethink after knowing the ending.
I sincerely recommend reading Lód. 10/10
