The fact that Jiang Cheng is described as looking more like Jin Ling's older brother, the latter having adopted his mannerisms and "tsundere" attitude just shows how close these two are.

Wei Wuxian even acknowledges it when he teases Jin Ling for his dog's name which he observed was similar to Jiang Cheng's.

Then, at the end of the book, Wei Wuxian quickly recognises that Jin Ling just wants to protect his JiuJiu from political enemies. Likewise, Jiang Cheng wanted to protect Jin Ling and keep his position as a new sect leader safe and secure. He wants him to have a protective adult figure in his life that can guide him because Jiang Cheng was deprived of this when he first started as sect leader. 🥺

It's very important to my understanding of all three characters that Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli see Wei Wuxian as their sibling, and he sees them as his. But I think it's also important that he is not their sibling, legally or socially.

When Jin Zixuan snaps "If you like Jiang Yanli so much, why don't you ask her father if you can marry her", I think the implication is pretty clear that this is in fact a thing Wei Wuxian could have done if they'd felt that way about each other. (And Madam Yu would no doubt have flipped a table at the "son of a servant" daring to suggest such a thing, but Jiang Fengmian would probably have been delighted.) No one reacts to this comment like JZX just said something insane or implied WWX is into incest.

ftr my thoughts on jin guangyao portraying himself as being small and weak and harmless and vulnerable are essentially that it isn't an act, because an act in this context implies a duplicity and/or disingenuousness that i don't think is present. but i do think it is a performance--it's just a performance that he has to play given the power disparity between himself and the rest of the cultivation world, at least until he becomes chief cultivator. in short, jin guangyao is performing the role of the non-threatening, subservient retainer that is expected of him to ensure his own survival in a world where he knows that the only person he can rely on to put his needs first is himself.

sometimes i genuinely cannot fathom how many haters and antis there are in the mdzs fandom 😖 like guys… at the end of the day it’s a show/book series about gay sword wizards committing war crimes…

i. don’t think there’s any ship in mdzs that i like hate with all my being. there are some that i’m like “ok i don’t really get it/not to my taste but pop off bestie!” (non-toxic chengxian, for example). there are some that i’m like “i don’t get it but tell me more?” and i usually end up liking them or at least understanding them better (i.e. toxic chengxian, xicheng, nieyao). and there are obv my fav ships (wangxian, songxiao, xiyao, etc.)

but like, do what you want forever. i don’t get why haters have to ruin the fun and just purposefully spread negativity or unhelpful discourse. unless you unironically ship something problematic like jin guangyao and qin su or something, do what you want forever!

also, a reminder that loving bad characters doesn’t make you a bad person. i love my little fellas jiggy and xue yang but as far as im aware i didn’t massacre 50+ people in cold blood or ever plan to :P you like wen chao? pop off! you like jin guangshan? i don’t get it but pop off!
