God the first time I saw that image I was ten years old and I thought the Sailor Senshi looked adorable. Now ten years later I realize how fucked up the situation is in that little manga panel. Those four girls were child soldiers forced to protect another girl not much younger than themselves. The look on their faces when they make that oath is that of a child receiving their favorite toy for Christmas, I don't even think these poor girls understand the magnitude of the responsibility they just "assumed." It's horrible to think that in all likelihood Venus, Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter were indoctrinated from birth to believe that the best thing in the world was to dedicate your entire existence to the daughter of your queen. Those girls had to give up their childhood to train as future protectors of the princess; instead of holding dolls, they held swords. Instead of playing, they fought to defeat future enemies. Instead of enjoying their wonderful gifts for themselves, they had to learn to use them for the benefit of another child. That other girl, we never see her hold a sword except to end her life. She never showed that she was capable of using even a gram of power despite being the future possessor of the silver crystal. She is always in her pretty princess dress, while her protectors never stop wearing their uniform. Serenity could behave like a child, escape from her lessons, play, laugh, be irresponsible and fall in love. On the other hand, the sailor senshi acted like adults even before being one. Hell, we know that the name of the princess of the moon is Serenity. But what is the name of the sailor senshi in their past lives? Did their parents call them after their homes? Or worse, they were not even allowed to have a proper name that would give them an identity other than being the guardian of the princess of the moon. I don't blame the princess but Queen Serenity, that woman not only deprived four girls of proper development in favor of her own daughter, but she rubbed in their faces everything they would never have in their lives, a childhood, forcing them to watch as she pampered her daughter without bothering to really prepare her for her future role or make her more independent.

Damn if we compare it with the scene where their counterpart on earth, the shitennou swear loyalty to their prince Endymion, the contrasts stand out. The shitennou are also kneeling but the four

ADULTS! are able to understand the oath they are taking, the man they serve is also an adult, which at least to me indicates that they already know this man well enough to accept being his protectors with a smile on their face. If you want more details, notice that Endymion always wears armor as do his guardians, even if his design is different. He knows how to use a sword, and if we remember in the Black Moon arc, it was Kunzite who informed him that he had magical powers and how he could take advantage of them. This makes me think that Endymion was trained by the eldest of the Shitennou to learn how to use his magical gifts in the past. This explains why when almost his entire kingdom rebelled, Endymion was not only able to flee, but also fought to stop the invasion and protect his lover, and tried to talk to his guardians so that they would abandon Metalia's side. Serenity in the whole battle where the fate of her kingdom is at stake, can only be behind her boyfriend, not fighting alongside the sailor senshi or doing anything useful.

If the sailor senshi x shitennou is canon, which I totally believe, it could explain why these four men decided to join Beryl and Metalia to invade the Moon, instead of allowing their sovereign to marry the crown princess, without having to use the old brainwashing excuse. They realized that their girlfriends were glorified slaves, indoctrinated from birth to not realize how fucked up their situation really was, never once accepting their duty.

The shitennou on the other hand, cared about Endymion, possibly growing up with him, seeing him as their brother. But they were people with their own opinions, they didn't trust the Moon Kingdom not because they "envied their long lives" but because their planet is clearly the only planet completely independent of the Moon's government. Isn't it curious that they are coincidentally the only planet on the planet whose ruler has a crystal/star seed/whatever as powerful as the Moon's silver crystal? That Earth is the only planet in the solar system without a Sailor Senshi? Although the answer is that Endymion is male. Was there never before a female user of the golden crystal who became Sailor Earth? In my opinion, the only reason why the Selenites could only look at the earth from afar was because the earthlings could defend themselves with the same level of attack, and the Shitennou know this, hence their disapproval of their prince's future marriage. Well, it was basically to give away the autonomy of the Earth, perhaps won with blood, for something there was a law that prohibited contact between the Moon and the Earth. I also think that they did not like Princess Serenity on a personal level, at first for breaking the law that prohibited the Selenites from stepping on the Earth for a simple whim, but after they developed romantic relationships with the sailor senshi, and understood the hellish life of servitude that their lovers had to endure. This disgust for the invasion of private property evolved into a hatred for her perceived immaturity, irresponsibility and insensitivity towards her "friends", laws of her own kingdom or her own duty. They could see her as unworthy of the affection of Endymion and the sailor senshi. The sum of all those historical, political and emotional factors would explain her fall to the dark side instead of brainwashing and racism.

I would love a Sailor Moon adaptation that developed these themes so implicit in the manga, clearly the silver millennium was not rosy, for some reason an entire planet decided to join a strange dark spot instead of its prince forming an alliance with the rival kingdom through marriage. The loyalty of the inner Sailor senshi to their princess seems sometimes chilling to me when they are willing to give up important parts of their lives (Minako giving up love in the manga, Mars making a vow of chastity to his princess also in the manga), on the other hand the outer Sailor senshi who never left their homes and the shitennou who were adults when they made their oath, are much more independent. It's weird that Sailor Moon is the only Sailor Senshi who needs an object to channel her power or that in her past life we ​​never see her defend herself even in the invasion of the Moon. Why didn't the heir to the throne receive training? Why did the internal sailor senshi leave their homes and become protectors of a baby at six? Did they have their own families or any proper names? How can Queen Serenity be a good ruler with such decisions?
