Another Way Out

What if he doesn’t like me? What if I don’t pass? What if she says no? What if they’re not ready? What if it catches on fire? What if someone breaks in? What if, what if, what if. Life is full of questions, ‘what if’ being one that’s mostly born from anxiety and a feeling of hopelessness. After all, you can’t prevent every outcome.

Jason Todd is no stranger to ‘what if’ questions. What if he had never tried to lift those tires? What if he had been born some other time, to some other couple? What if he had refused to be Robin? But out of all of them there’s one that stuck with him:

What if he made it out in time?

The multiverse theory, that has since been proved correct, shows that every single answer to a what if question has a timeline where it comes true. There’s a timeline where you pass, there’s one where you fail. There’s one where she says yes, there’s one where she says no.

There’s one where Jason makes it out, and there’s one where he doesn’t.

We all know how the last one ends, but what about the first? What if he made it out? Let’s find out together.

He’s going to die. It’s a fact at this point. The sky is blue, the grass is green and Jason Todd is going to die alone in a warehouse in Ethiopia.

It’s a little pathetic, but he had begged the Joker to stay. He didn’t want to die alone. He knew that the clown wouldn’t, of course. I mean, to stay is to die, obviously. But, there was still a bit of hope that was quickly dashed when the clown laughed and sauntered out.

Jason sighs, but with his wrecked lungs and ribs and chest and… well everything it sounds more like a gurgle.

He doesn’t want to die.

He wonders idly where Batman is. After all, he did call for help. But, help never came and now he’s going to die in a big explosion. Jason stares at the ceiling, so far gone that the pain can’t even reach him, and wonders if the explosion will look cool.

He really doesn’t want to die.

It’s a split second decision, in the end. He doesn’t want to die, so he won’t. Simple as that. Everything is broken, but he’s running on adrenaline now. Of course, that doesn’t help the fact that he physically can’t run on two broken legs but he will crawl.

The luminous numbers of the countdown taunt him as he tries as hard as he can to get to the door. But it’s just too far. He’ll never make it in time.

He feels a few tears slip down his battered cheeks. Fuck I really don’t want to die here.

He’s a little ashamed to admit it, but he wants to give up. He’s tired. Of fighting, of trying to survive, of crawling through this god forsaken FUCKING WAREHOUSE!

Oh, he’s running on more than just adrenaline now. He’s running on anger. Pure, animalistic, unfiltered rage. He’s going to get out and there won’t be a corner of this earth where that fucking clown can hide where Jason won’t find him.

He’s about to try and stand when something catches his eye, a glint of moonlight reflecting off the snow. It’s an old warehouse, the walls aren’t exactly sturdy and there’s more than a few holes but this hole in particular looks just big enough for Jason to fit. He feels hope flickering in his chest again. Another way out!

He gets about a foot away when the pain starts creeping in again. He has to breathe in deeply to try and stave off the nausea and inevitable blackout.

He uses his hand, pointedly not looking at his massacred fingers, to push aside some boards and continues crawling.

He gets to the hole and wastes no time, putting his head through first. The first breath of fresh air is heavenly and Jason wants to start crying but the beeping behind him reminds him that he doesn’t have time.

He gets one arm through and starts struggling with the next one, a mixture of panic, severe injuries and the cold making it harder than usual for him to grasp on to anything.

He finally gets his other arm out and starts army crawling to try and get the lower half of him out of the warehouse.

His foot gets caught on the wall and he bites down a scream at the feeling of his bones grating against each other.

A mantra of fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, is playing on repeat in Jason’s head as he abandons all thoughts of trying to be careful and just starts pulling on his foot.

The first pull makes his vision go white for a moment before he refocuses and pulls again.

It finally comes out and Jason sighs in relief, now trying to get as far away as possible from the warehouse before it blows.

Army crawling on the dry, flat warehouse floor is a lot easier than trying to army crawl through a foot of snow covering uneven ground.

He sucks in a sharp breath when his arm makes contact with an especially sharp rock.

There’s something in the distance that sounds like growling but Jason can’t hear anything over the blood rushing in his ears and his own voice screaming in his head.

He chances a look back and his heart stutters when he realizes how close he still is.

He starts crawling a little more desperately, clawing at the ground in hopes of finding something to haul himself forward with.

Oh my god I’m not going to make it. The thought causes a hysterical laugh to bubble out of him even as he continues to snake through the snow.

“Please.” He begs, but his vocal cords are long past saving so it comes out as a garbled whisper.

He collapses, his arms no longer able to hold his weight. I’m so sorry, Dick.
