The cool thing abt having a lot of brain junk is that you learn it’s all connected. Didn’t make a note of this earlier bc I was in the impeding time panic but according to my psychiatrist antidepressants help with migraines. So like. Who knows. My neurotransmitters need to get their shit together. Unionize.

ive been watching the docuseries about jared from subway and how he was a terrible pedophile sex predator, and a key part of the story is this woman who met him bc she was in radio and she was interviewing him and at one point when she met him he leaned in and whispered to her "i think middle school girls are really hot" and this led her to get closer to him and start recording their phone calls bc she was hoping to get enough that he could be stopped right and at one point she thought she had enough so she went to the fbi but it wasnt enough and then the fbi had her working as an undercover informant but she was working on it for so long and nothing happened and she understandably felt pretty desperate and every time she tells someone, the docu has that person giving their side of the story, and every single person says they didnt believe her at first. that they thought she was schizophrenic or something. and eventually they see her evidence and do believe but its just so upsetting like this whole ordeal affected her health so much she ended up with ptsd and a terrible chronic pain condition and like idk its just hard to be faced withj how much women arent believed and how much this hurts them

Hi! Newbie writing who loves writing, I just wanted advice for how to write a character who is emotionally numb and distant and how they can overcome it?
Or who to write numbness in general?
Writing Detached Characters: A Guide to Emotional Numbness
Tumblr media
Welcome to the latest instalment in my series on ‘how to write different emotions’. Contrary to the series title, today’s blog will be covering how to write a lack of emotion, or rather, emotional numbness. This is an area many writers covering PTSD, depression, or closed-off characters might be interested in. Thank you anon for the request, and I hope this blog helps you with your writing!
Understanding the Motive for Emotional Numbness
Emotional numbness can stem from various sources and they all influence a character's behaviour differently. Understanding the root cause of their numbness is crucial to portraying them authentically.
Trauma-Induced Numbness: Characters closed off due to trauma may appear more disconnected and guarded. Their numbness is a defence mechanism to avoid reliving painful experiences.
Chronic Stress: Prolonged exposure to stress can lead to emotional exhaustion and numbness. These characters might show signs of burnout and a lack of enthusiasm for activities they once enjoyed.
Depression: Characters dealing with depression may exhibit numbness as a symptom. They might struggle with feelings of hopelessness and an inability to experience pleasure.
Each motive ties directly into the character's behaviour, so it’s a good idea to research how numbness varies based on the cause.
How to Showcase Emotional Numbness in Your Writing
When crafting an emotionally numb character, subtlety is key. Here are some ways to show their numbness through various aspects of writing:
Body Language
Closed-off Posture: Crossed arms, avoiding eye contact, slumped shoulders.
Minimal Gestures: Limited use of hand movements, lack of expressive body language.
Tense Muscles: Frequently clenched jaw or fists, indicating suppressed emotions.
Lack of Physical Contact: Avoids hugs, handshakes, or any form of touch.
Facial Expressions
Blank Stare: Eyes that seem to look through people rather than at them.
Neutral Expressions: Rarely smiles or frowns, maintaining a consistently neutral face.
Delayed Reactions: Slow to show any reaction to surprising or emotional events.
Flat Affect: Consistent lack of facial movement or expression regardless of the situation.
Note: remember to not take this too far! This isn’t to say your character doesn’t feel anything at all and will never react to anything but more so that their reactions will be very muted. Yes, they can get happy/surprised, etc. but they won’t have wide grins or loud exclamations of shock.
Appearance
Plain Wardrobe: Clothes that are simple, unassuming, and devoid of vibrant colours; preferences for baggy/shapeless clothing.
Neglect of Personal Grooming: Messy hair, unshaven, or generally unkempt appearance.
Monochrome Outfits: Preference for neutral, muted colours like grey, black, and white.
Practical Over Fashionable: Chooses functionality over style, reflecting a lack of interest in appearance.
Dialogue Cues
Monotone Speech: Flat, emotionless tone without inflection.
Brief Responses: Short, to-the-point answers with minimal elaboration.
Avoidance of Personal Topics: Steers conversations away from personal or emotional subjects.
Lack of Expressive Language: Uses simple, direct language without metaphors or descriptive flourishes.
Adjectives and Verbs
Descriptive Words: Detached, apathetic, vacant, stoic, unfeeling, indifferent, withdrawn, impassive, numb, aloof.
Action Words: Avoids, withdraws, dismisses, isolates, ignores, neglects, shuns, evades, suppresses, restrains.
Emotionally Neutral Verbs: Walks, talks, looks, sits (instead of strides, argues, gazes, lounges) listens, observes, reacts, replies, continues.
Subdued Descriptors: Plain, muted, dull, flat, colourless, bland, lifeless, monotonous, reserved, restrained.
Overcoming Emotional Numbness
Since there are several reasons why someone might be emotionally numb, each cause has different ways to overcome it. Here are a few common approaches:
Therapeutic Intervention: Therapy or counselling can help characters address underlying trauma or mental health issues. Techniques like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are often effective.
Supportive Relationships: Developing a trusting relationship with a friend, family member, or romantic partner can provide the emotional support needed to open up. This would be a better option for a character who has developed numbness due to past relationships and needs to ‘heal’.
Personal Growth and Self-Discovery: Characters may embark on a journey of self-discovery, engaging in activities or experiences that help them reconnect with their emotions. It would be fun to see a numb character do this with a love interest or close friend. Maybe they’re ‘forced’ to go to an amusement park and the other characters are shocked to see them whoop/yell on one of the rides.

Actually bathrooms shouldn't be gendered at all that's half the problem.
In communities that lack access to single-sex bathrooms, you witness an increase in the rate of sexual violence, physical health issues like incontinence, and mental health issues like PTSD. If women's health and safety aren't a problem to you, then by all means continue insisting that there's no need to provide them, but you should know these issues disproportionately affect poor women, disabled women, young women, and women from ethnically, linguistically, and racially diverse backgrounds (e.g. bathrooms in northern India are particularly unsafe for women).
I'll leave you with a quote from a book I read recently - Invisible Women, by Caroline Criado Perez:
According to the UN, one in three women lack access to safe toilets, and WaterAid reports that girls and women collectively spend 97 billion hours a year finding a safe space to relieve themselves [which affects their productivity, as women are more likely to be engaged in the informal economy, and their safety]. Local governments that fail to provide public toilets may believe that they are cutting costs, but a 2015 Yale study suggests that this is a false economy. [They linked] the ‘risk of sexual assault to the number of sanitation facilities and the time a woman must spend walking to a toilet, and calculated the tangible costs (lost earnings, medical, court, and prison expenses) and intangible costs (pain and suffering, risk of homicide) [against] the cost of installing and maintaining public toilets … [they found public toilets could save one town $5 million better off, which is a conservative estimate, as it doesn’t include the various health benefits saved from women having more regular and more private bowel movements (e.g. chronic constipation, cholera)]. Health problems arising from a lack of public sanitary provision are not restricted to low-income countries. Canadian and British studies have revealed that referrals for urinary-tract infection, problems with distended bladders, and a range of other uro-gynaeloogical problems have increased proportionately to [toilet inaccessibility]. Urban planning that fails to account for women’s risk of being sexually assaulted is a clear violation of women’s equal right to public spaces – and inadequate sanitary provision is only one of the many ways planners exclude women with this kind of gender-insensitive design. ... For women who try to escape from war and disaster, the gender-neutral nightmare often continues in the refugee camps of the world … [although] international guidelines state that toilets in refugee camps should be sex-segregated, marked, and lockable, [sic] these requirements are often not enforced [and] research by the Women’s Refugee Commission has found that women and girls in accommodation centres in Germany and Sweden are vulnerable to rape, assault, and other violence…

actually- my chronic & mental illness does define me- it's a very huge part of my life. it can't be ignored. it can't be placed on the back burner. it cannot be "powered through". it is there 24/7 whether or not i want it to be. i have to constantly explain to people why i do things is because of my schizophrenic and autistic neurotypes, or that im in severe pain from one of my various problems that cause pain
trying to mock certain disabled people who have to talk about and seek care for their disabilities on a daily basis is unnecessary and violent. it's oppressive. my disorders literally define me, my schizophrenia and autism dictate most of my behaviors. my body is constantly in pain, my guts are constantly affected by my IBS. i am constantly anxious from my PTSD and constantly dissociating from my DID.
if you personally feel as though your illnesses don't define you, that is great for you. i'm not saying chronically ill folks can't feel that way, but what i am saying is stop punching down on those of us who have a lot of their lived experience rooted in their disorders, diseases and neurotypes.
things go into remission or make progress with healing, but most chronic illnesses never fully go away and it's just bullshit to make chronically ill people feel like they can never complain about their issues. it's not an inconvenience to you, it's us expressing what we're going through. stop acting like us talking about our lived experience is an attack on your person. i'm sorry hearing that someone else is in pain sucks to hear but it sucks FAR more to BE IN PAIN

Thoughts on Echo as amputee/disability representation
First and foremost, I am not disabled or an amputee and I don’t claim to speak for those communities (and if I was I couldn't speak for everyone). What little I do know mostly comes from this youtube channel (@oakwyrm), this post, and other research I’ve done for my writing (and like one amputee I kinda knew in passing). By all means correct me and add to the conversation, I just have some thoughts I want to share because I haven’t really seen this discussed anywhere
Overview
So Echo is interesting. He is a triple amputee which is pretty rare in media. His disabilities come from extremely traumatic circumstances: injured in a near-death experience, imprisoned and dehumanized as an experiment with no autonomy over what happened to his body.
There are a few moments in the shows where Echo is treated… questionably. Like this bit where Rex uses him as an example of the Separatists' evils to convince the locals to fight back:
Tumblr media
To be fair, yeah Echo’s treatment does prove that the Techno Union is not neutral like they claim. The modifications that everyone is gasping in horror at here obviously weren’t made with comfort and accessibility in mind, nor with Echo’s consent. But you still just want to be sure that “They took away his freedom, his humanity, they tried to turn him into a machine” is about using him as a living computer, not the fact that he is missing limbs.
The Batch is also pretty insensitive toward him and his trauma imo, which is weird considering they've supposedly also faced discrimination for their mutations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Disabled people do have to deal with stuff like this in this day and age so I guess it can speak to those experiences. I think especially him being mistaken as a droid (and Hunter going along with it (bruh)) might resonate with some people.
Aside from that stuff, Echo isn't really treated any differently as a character/person which is really good (as low of a bar as that is).
We get this moment in CW where Echo contemplates that yeah things are gonna be different now
Tumblr media
While also (imo at least) showing that he is still the same person regardless, evidenced by the fact that he just echoed Rex :,) I also think it's significant that he joins the Bad Batch on his own terms and we're given a really emotional scene to specifically show that he's not just like 'lumped in with the other misfits' but that it is his choice to go where he feels his place is.
A lot of people, myself included, are disappointed that TBB didn't have more time to explore Echo's PTSD, but I think the one panic attack scene we did get is really good. Even thought it's minor it at least is an appropriate reaction from a guy who was medically tortured (which is more than I've come to expect from Star Wars shows lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's really sweet to see Omega showing Echo some empathy and consideration.
It would have been nice to see more of his adjustment period, and other side effects like chronic pain and maintenance, but there’s a lot of daily life stuff the show never had time for (i.e. we don’t know if he removed his prosthetics to sleep, but we also never saw him sleep anyway). His disabilities might take on a background role (much like the character himself sadly) but for the most part they aren’t invisible or erased, nor do they define his character and arc.
Physical Appearance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay this one is bit dicey, bc on the one hand, yes complaints that Echo’s paleness (most likely caused by burns from the explosion or chemical burns from the cryo-chamber) is whitewashing are totally valid. But I also think you can draw comparisons to real life conditions that affect pigmentation/complexion (like you know burns). So while I understand why a lot of fanart will depict him with his original skin tone and with hair, consider that there are real people who have to live with temporary or permanent changes to their appearance, and the idea of “fixing" him by making him look more like his old self can be problematic.
It's also interesting to note that Echo could act as a reversal of the 'disabled/disfigured = evil' trope. He's pale and bald and wears black and red, which is so often visually associated with villains, but we all know Echo is the bestest boy™
The Headpiece
Tumblr media
Echo’s headpiece is interesting because within the show we don’t actually ever learn much about it (idk if there is more info in books or whatever bc i don’t have them so?). He didn’t have it in CW so we know it didn’t come from the Techno Union and therefore Echo probably had more choice with it. We don’t know its exact purpose but it’s most likely related to his scomping abilities. When he is hacking with his scomp in CW, before he has his headpiece, it’s clearly very mentally straining:
Tumblr media
We don’t see him struggling like this in TBB once he does have it (though that could be bc he got more used to it over time). There doesn't seem to be much of an impact when he removes his headpiece in s3 ep14-15, except that he gets stuck in the ports every time he uses his scomp which is not something we’ve seen before:
Tumblr media
There might not be an exact real-world equivalent, but the headpiece is some kind of accessibility aid. It means that someone specifically designed a device to help him adapt to the changes the Techno Union made, as well as a helmet that integrates it. It’s removable and visually very present, much like a cochlear implant would be. (A lot of people actually headcanon it to act partially as a hearing aid, since it makes sense that Echo’s hearing would have been damaged in the explosion, but there isn't really any indication of this in canon.) The headpiece is never really acknowledged in the show, but I think that's a good thing. It's something he needs/wants and it just exists, completely normalized, and that's pretty cool 👍
Legs
Sigh... So from the very first episode of TBB I was really disappointed that the animation team or whoever completely visually erased Echo’s prosthetic legs (I think we all were, honestly, if fanart is anything to go by). It’s one thing when he’s in armor because he would probably want to protect his prosthetics, but we literally see him in his blacks and there is no indication whatsoever that he lost his legs even though it was not left up for debate at all in CW:
Tumblr media
Like ??????!?
This is just really strange to me! Idk what went on behind the scenes with this decision but I don’t really see why it would be that much harder to animate or anything since it’s 3D and they've done it before. We do see some pretty sophisticated cybernetic technology in Star Wars canon that mimics real limbs:
Tumblr media
But Luke’s fancy hand is technically 20ish years from now, so Anakin and Maul are more of a representation of what level we could expect here
Tumblr media
So yeah, for no apparent reason, his leg amputation is effectively, visually and narratively nonexistent. Which is not great 👎
Arm!
The scomp on the other hand (uh lol!) is the complete opposite and I kinda love it!
At first I, like many others, thought it was a bit odd that they didn’t give Echo a prosthetic arm. Losing hands is basically a Star Wars tradition at this point, so robotic arms/hands are well established within the worldbuilding:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We aren’t necessarily given a canon reason for why Echo doesn't get a cybernetic arm (again unless it's in some lore book I haven’t read, sorry). General fanon explanations I’ve seen are that he either couldn’t because the Techno Union wired the scomp too far into his nervous system, and/or the resources to give him one were deemed too expensive for a clone (what about his legs tho?), or that he chose not to, usually because he thought the scomping was useful.
Regardless, I actually really love this choice (and it's the whole reason I made this post), because here's the thing: There’s a lot of problematic tropes out there that either erase/cure disabilities or compensate them with perks (like how pretty much any blind character is actually not blind by some sort of magic power). With amputees that is done with robotic arms. The character is still an amputee or course, and there is still value in that representation, if this story from Mark Hamill that makes me tear up is anything to go by:
Tumblr media
but for the most part these characters function like anyone else, just with a limb that looks a little different. It’s no more than a video game skin, an able-bodied actor with a green screen glove. It “cures” the disability, or it actually makes the character even stronger than usual:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It usually makes sense within the world of the story, but the reason it’s not so great in my opinion is that in the real world we just do not have technology anywhere close to that yet. Prosthetics can more or less replace any mobility from lost legs, but not for all the complexities of a hand (and even if they could the average person wouldn’t be able to afford it).
So
I think it's actually really super cool that Echo’s scomp bypasses the canonically-established amputee erasure and functions much like a stump would irl. He integrates it into his movements and everyday life and it’s (as far as I know) a lot closer to an everyday amputee’s experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn’t define his character, it doesn’t hold him back, he lives a full life, the other’s don’t treat him any differently, and he’s still a total karking badass
The only additional thing is that he sometimes uses it as a weapon (which given his story, I think it’s cool to see him taking back autonomy in a way, and we only see that like twice)
Tumblr media
And also the scomping, which could be seen as the 'added/compensating superpower' trope. But narratively it's no different than if he was plugging in with a hacking gadget of some kind (he didn't necessarily "need" to lose his arm for it) and it’s not like Echo is completely defined by this skill. Personally, I think it's well worth the positives of him actually having a visible and realistically impactful amputation.
I see a lot of posts or comments out there that say stuff like “how come Echo doesn’t get a hand?” or fanworks that do give him one and I just think it’s a bit of a shame. If he did get a robotic hand, it just would have disappeared the same way his legs and Anakin’s arm did (aside from that one time he got yoinked by a magnet). When Echo did “get a hand” in the last two episodes there were comments like “yay he finally got a hand! but it doesn’t even work” but I was actually so relieved that it didn’t! Bc for one thing that wouldn’t make any sense, he grabbed it off a droid, it wasn’t designed to implement with his scomp, that would be really complicated. But more importantly because it again refused to erase/cure his disability! It functioned like a real-world cosmetic prosthetic (useless beyond appearance) which is exactly what he needed it for, so that he could blend in better with his disguise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he continually took it off throughout the episode and ditched it at the end. He only used it for the necessity of a stealth mission, he doesn’t feel the need to visually “fit in” in his daily life.
And, last but very much not least, he made a dad joke and from my intel that is very accurate representation!
Tumblr media
TLDR: Echo’s scomp is actually really cool from an amputee representation perspective, especially within Star Wars, and I think that deserves some appreciation

Hypervigilance is a common symptom of many mental health disorders and social conditions. It is a physiological response of constant alertness to the threats around you and from yourself. I've had a hard time coping with this symptom in general, as it would warp all my relationships, all my perceptions of myself, others and the world. On top of all of this, I felt it was providing me safety from the actual threats I've experienced and feared experiencing; I couldn't be further from the truth. Here are a few ways you can experience hypervigilance:
You might have phobic reflexes. Every unexpected or unpredictable sensory information is perceived as a threat (a sigh, loud walking, cars or people behind you, quick movements from others, etc.). You may jump, or be extremely started and irritable. Other times, you may have extreme emotional reactions or intense dissociation. Phobic reflexes are generally responses to sensory triggers.
Your body may rarely feel relaxed. A lot of stiffness, pain and discomfort can come from keeping your body at a high stress level. At long-term, you may end up developing chronic illnesses as your body is overwhelmed with the constant arousal of fight/flight/freeze/fawn responses.
You struggle doing any task that requires your full attention or a lack of alertness to your surroundings (paperwork, sleeping, reading, etc.). Your ability to function cognitively may be affected by hypervigilance as a whole, which means you'll experience cognitive rigidity, processing disinhibition and other executive dysfunctions. (Note: these are generally partially reversible when recovering from PTSD, GAD, OCD or other disorders with hypervigilant patterns or when you are no longer in a social context which requires this level of conscience of your surroundings).
You may overanalyze what people say or what you think in order to avoid any threat. The latter is particularly common in people with OCD or with trauma around philosophical concepts. You may perceive yourself as one step away from losing control, and may expect others to lose control as well. Generally, the feeling of loss of control resides in hypervigilance itself than actually acting against your values.
You may use escapism a lot, and develop addictions, behavioral or not. This reduces the sense of being constantly threatened temporarily, but increases the hypervigilance on the long-term and worsens the issue. These are a few of the signs you experience hypervigilance as a core coping mechanism ruling your reactions to your current social context as well as the disorders you might deal with. Trauma is the common denominator of this mechanism, although PTSD and C-PTSD isn't implied by default. Since hypervigilance is your body being in constant alertness, in order to reduce it, you must reduce the physiological stress then work on the mental components of hypervigilance at the same time. I will update this blog later with a few ways you could reduce hypervigilance.

Post the movie when Leo's shell is super sensitive and the PTSD is raging the others learn a distinct pattern before touching him.
Announce their approach 2. Elbow or shoulder nudge - to ask for permission 3. head bonk, returned nudge, or any kind of touch is an invitation 4. Let the affection commence!
Also the gang built him his own compression shell covering. The weight is a comfort and helps with the chronic pain, and it covers his shell to offer protection. It straps on like a backpack over his shoulders and under his arms, and around his waist. Mikey has decorated every inch of it, and gets to redecorate whenever it gets washed, but only in little spurts at a time. Leo can't have people fiddling with his shell for too long at once but he's getting better with Mikey's help.
Donnie is tempted to add pockets and weapons and tools to his covering, but hasn't figure out how to approach it yet.

How Trauma Affects The Body
Trauma can have a significant impact on the body, both in the short-term and long-term. Trauma can trigger the "fight or flight" response, which is a natural physiological response that prepares the body to respond to a perceived threat. This response can lead to a variety of physical symptoms, including increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and muscle tension.
Over time, trauma can also cause chronic physical symptoms, including headaches, chronic pain, gastrointestinal problems, and immune system dysfunction. Trauma can also affect the nervous system, leading to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Breathing exercises can be a helpful tool for releasing trauma from the body. One effective technique is deep breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing. This involves taking slow, deep breaths, expanding the belly as you inhale and exhaling slowly.
Another technique is alternate nostril breathing, which involves breathing in through one nostril and out through the other while blocking the opposite nostril with your finger. This can help balance the nervous system and promote relaxation.
Other techniques that can be helpful include progressive muscle relaxation, where you tense and relax different muscle groups in your body, and visualization exercises, where you imagine a peaceful scene or experience. It's important to note that these techniques can be helpful for managing symptoms, but they should not be used as a substitute for professional treatment for trauma or other mental health conditions.

So I was doing some looking around and researching into possible real life equivalents for Color’s physical condition, such as his fragility to the point of possible death if he overexerts his abilities.
Color’s condition—which is characterized by physical fragility, fatigue, and the potential for severe physical deterioration—has similarities to several real-life conditions that affect energy levels, muscle strength, and overall physical integrity such as:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)
Symptoms: Extreme fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, muscle and joint pain, cognitive difficulties, and post-exertional malaise (worsening of symptoms after physical or mental exertion).
Like Color, individuals with CFS/ME have limited energy reserves and can experience significant physical and cognitive fatigue from overexertion. They need to carefully manage their activity levels to avoid severe consequences.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease)
Symptoms: Fragile bones that break easily, muscle weakness, and fatigue.
The physical fragility and risk of cracking or breaking with exertion in Color's body can be likened to the bone fragility in individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta. Managing physical stress and avoiding overexertion is crucial.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
Symptoms: Hypermobile joints, skin that bruises easily, chronic pain, and fatigue.
The combination of fragility, easy bruising or tearing (cracking in Color’s case), and chronic fatigue can parallel the experiences of those with EDS, where physical stress can lead to significant issues.
Like individuals with CFS/ME, Color would need to pace his activities, taking frequent breaks and avoiding overexertion to prevent severe fatigue and physical damage. He might need to prioritize his activities, focusing on essential tasks and avoiding unnecessary exertion.
Similar to those with brittle bone disease, Color would need to avoid situations that could physically stress his body and lead to cracking or dusting.
He might use supportive devices or strategies to minimize physical strain, such as ergonomic tools for photography or mobility aids for traveling.
Techniques to manage chronic pain and discomfort, which could include medication, physical therapy, or other interventions. Ensuring adequate nutrition to support his body’s needs and potentially mitigate some of the fatigue and physical issues.
Developing coping mechanisms to handle the emotional stress of his physical condition, possibly through therapy or support groups. Relying on friends like Killer, Epic, Delta, and Beta for emotional support and understanding during difficult times.
Some supportive devices or strategies Color might make use of at his leisure, particularly with matters such as traveling and hiking, he could use things like orthopedic supports, mobility aids, things for pain management, adaptive equipment, assistive technology and more.
He could use braces and splints to support unstable joints and prevent injuries, and/or compression garments to help with joint stability and reduce pain.
Mobility aids such as walking poles or trekking poles to provide stability and reduce impact on joints during hiking. (His walking poles are definitely covered in stickers and drawings from all his friends.)
He could use portable heat and cold packs to help manage pain and inflammation as well as portable massager to relieve muscle tension and pain.
Adaptive equipment such as ergonomic backpacks designed to reduce strain and distribute weight evenly. Adjustable hiking sticks for customization based on height and terrain.
Voice-Activated apps and devices for navigation and reducing the need for physical interaction with devices. Smartphone apps for tracking symptoms, medication, and managing energy levels.
Stress- relief tools like stress balls, fidget toys, or calming apps to help manage PTSD symptoms or overstimulation.
Personal comfort items or sensory aids that provide emotional support during travel or hiking, such as all the evidence and trinkets of his loved ones back home or spiritual/religious items or symbols. Techniques and tools for managing fatigue, like scheduled rest breaks and planning shorter, manageable hikes.
Travel planning apps to help with organizing trips, finding accessible accommodations, and managing health needs.
(And of course this isn’t supposed to be me diagnosing color with anything, or saying what he does or doesn’t have. Mostly just to take some things this character experiences and link it to some real life equivalents, that could potentially help better understand him and what he deals with.)

Jeff the Killer: A deep “analysis” of his appearance.
Tw: heavy discussion of gore and grotesque imagery
I'm not a medical professional, these insights are based on research from books, medical websites, and basic biology I learned in school.
Tumblr media
Jeff the Killer is a character known for his appearance, shaped by bleach, fire, and his Glasgow smile.
However, I want to consider his look from a realistic perspective.
His Skin
Tumblr media
Ac:shatteredankles
Jeff would likely exhibit various types of burns with different colors and textures. Pale skin alone wouldn't define his appearance:
Immediately After Being Burned
His wounds might appear red, bumpy, and extremely swollen.
Blisters, ranging from a few centimeters to a few inches (depending on severity), could form across the affected areas, giving his skin a “glossy sheen”.
In the most affected parts, the external layer of skin could “split open” and separate from the layers beneath, revealing raw, shiny, and splotchy skin.
The area that dealt with the most intense flames could become blackened, bloody and flaky wounds.
The parts of his skin that burned for the longest might have left his skin looking leathery rather than freshly burned, skin cooks (think of beef jerky).
Healing Process
If Jeff had received skin grafts in a hospital, the scars might show a fishnet pattern due to the stretching of the grafts. However, it’s unlikely that Jeff’s body would have fully healed without extensive treatment(he decided to murder his whole family before getting it..so y’know).
Therefore, his burns might be severely infected:
Swelling and fluid buildup under the skin and around wounds would start to happen.
This fluid could be yellow, green, brown, or black, accompanied by a foul odor like “ammonia or spoiled fruit”
Fourth-degree burns could have caused significant nerve damage, leaving him in constant pain and with a high risk of septic shock.
Demeanour
Burning bleach can release toxic fumes, including chlorine gas, leading to severe respiratory issues, lung damage, and potential poisoning:
Jeff might have a chronic cough, difficulty speaking, and breathing issues, resulting in a raspy voice.
Burns are extremely itchy, especially first-degree burns, leading to relentless scratching.
Jeff would likely be in excruciating pain constantly, possibly resulting in substance abuse, such as morphine and painkillers, due to his inability to access medical care as a fugitive.
His skin might be peeling or falling off, necessitating the use of bandages to hold it together and attempt to heal.
Jeff could suffer from PTSD (btw adding this depth to his character is amazing to see rather than the usual edgy teen)
His Smile
Tumblr media
Jeff’s cheeks are cut from the corners of his mouth up towards his ears, creating an exaggerated "smile."
The Initial Injury
The cuts would be deep, extending through multiple layers of skin and possibly affecting the muscles around the mouth.
This specific type injury would cause so much bleeding, and without immediate medical intervention, it would be difficult to manage on his own, he would’ve been gushing blood for a long time, enough to make him pass out.
The initial pain from such an injury would be excruciating obviously , this will most definitely contribute to Jeff's psychological state.
Healing and Scarring
As the wounds attempt to heal, they would form thick, rigid scar tissue. The scars might be red/purple initially, fading to a lighter color over time but remaining highly visible (look up pictures of a healed Glasgow smile).
The scars would be rough and raised, with a “puckered apperance due to the tension in the skin as it heals.” The skin around the scars might appear uneven and bumpy.
The scarring could cause stiffness and limit the movement of his mouth, making most facial expressions very difficult.
Eating, drinking, and speaking could be significantly impaired due to the weird structure and function of his mouth.
Given Jeff’s lack of proper medical care, the cuts could become infected, like his burns.
Infected scars might appear swollen, red, and could exude pus (gross).
The deep cuts could damage facial nerves, leading to areas of numbness or chronic pain and hypersensitivity around the scars.
The scars would be a constant reminder of his trauma and might show signs of repeated irritation or reopening due to scratching his burns and all around poor healing environment.

I have no motivation to answer asks on my au rn, I’m trying my best, I made this for y’all :)

Hello may I offer you this question and also Techno being a little shit and standing right in the perfect way for his cape to fall over is shoulders and completely engulf Drean while he's trying to have a serious conversation
In what way do you think Dream is disabled/affected post-prison and if he does, what do you think he does to hide it?
that's an amazing visual and i support it so much. bonus points if techno uses dream's head for a chin rest.
as to the question about c!dream and the aftermath of the prison, i think it there's my canon opinion and my headcanon.
canon-wise, i don't think there's outwardly much visible. the use of potions and the fact regeneration exists in canon to the extent it does, i think it's probably likely there's nothing super overt. which, really, i think would be worse for dream as he has no 'proof' that he was tortured and we see him be fairly insecure about the fact no one would believe him or that people knew and didn't care. that has to weigh on him.
we already know he's disabled because of the ptsd. that's fairly obvious and canon confirms it.
i do think he'd suffer physically from the effects, however. they use pretty intense language to describe what was done to dream including maim which makes me think there probably IS some visible damage though not as intense as losing a limb, maybe disfigurement which i think would track with what we know of c!quackity and possibly something like a missing ear which would affect hearing or losing fingers. i think he has a lot of pain and dependency on potions and golden apples as evidenced by his inventory. and chronic pain is a disability so i feel confident in calling c!dream physically disabled after the prison.
my personal headcanon, though, is that he lost a leg because i love to make him suffer.
