The Netherlands’ new right-wing coalition government aims to reintroduce daytime speeds of 80mph on motorways as part of a number of proposed changes to the country’s environmental policies which have sparked concern. The move echoes the anti-green stance of other right-wing parties across the continent, as environmental issues become popular bogeymen for populist politicians. In Germany, for example, heat pumps have been politicised, as members of the far-right party AfD have called the Green party “our enemies’. On Thursday morning, the far-right politician Geert Wilders announced that his anti-Islam, anti-immigration Party for Freedom was forming a coalition with the centre-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), pro-reform party New Social Contract and the Farmer-Citizen Movement. A 26-page coalition accord titled “hope, guts and pride” outlined measures aiming to reduce migration, introduce constitutional reform, address a housing and cost-of-living crisis and row back on climate change and pollution policy. Under previous governments, the Netherlands was seen as one of the forerunners of Europe in adopting renewable energy sources – especially in solar power – and planning to drastically reduce animal farming to address its manure-based pollution problem. But, although the small, low-lying country would be partially submerged without action on rising sea levels and river flood risk, there is little in the accord on climate change.

I got this awhile ago and wanted to put the time into actually writing a response but then a bunch of personal shit happened and I think I've been on Tumblr maybe once or twice this past 2 week for only a few minutes. My stuff isn't important, but this is going up for discussion today and it needs to be stopped as soon as possible. I've already contacted my representatives (even though i dont think it'll change the minds of mine i live in an extremely red area in an extremely red state so fun times) and have signed petitions and it's important to try to do something even if you think it won't work. KOSA will not end well for anyone and will effect everyone. Please do your own research and contact your representatives as this will do everything BUT protect kids online as it actively will censor anyone they want to censor and take away protections that are already in place for minors. Kids safety my ass 😒. There's also the EARN IT bill that is equally as important go get denied as it will get rid of end to end encryption as we know it. Please do what you can to help stop these bills from passing.

First of all, why are you taking the regime's words over people?! The regime is commiting crimes, of course they're not going to admit it. What did I tell you? They murder us in darkness. Secondly, no one said the prisoners are being executed. The news was clear, Iran's parliament voted to execute prisoners to be a "harsh lesson" for other protesters. This is Kayhan article about it, one of the most regime related news agencies:

They execute people for stupid reasons like "he drank alcohol more than 5 times" and "she promoted homosexuality by existing". Torturing and murdering political prisoners and other-thinkers is nothing new here. That's why we have so many political refugees outside of iran, because all of them are in danger of getting killed. re: the situation here, the supreme court is gonna be announcing their decision tomorrow on whether to declare the mining contract illegal/unconstitutional (actually its a bit more complicated bc they'll be repealing a specific law, but to keep it understandable lmao) which would then give justification for it to be voided. first quantum minerals will likely try to sue our government if that happens, but that'll be the next problem to deal with and people would rather know our representatives actually convey the population's will at the very least lmfao. but if the court doesn't give the decision people want to hear then shit will definitely kick off for at least a few days.

also the canadian embassy have refused to get involved at all or even give a statement, and won't respond to anyone, but it doesn't surprise me whose side the canadian government is on 🤡

Saskatchewan Pronoun Policy

as I'm sure we're all aware, politicians in the states have been proposing and passing legislation to harm trans people as of late. unfortunately, right wing politicians in Canada have started following this example.

the government of Saskatchewan has introduced a new policy, just prior to the start of the school year, which requires parental permission for students under 16 to go by a different name or pronouns. I won't go in depth about this, but you can read more here and here.

Saskatchewan is not the first province in Canada to enact this kind of policy. New Brunswick was the first, and other provinces (such as Ontario and Manitoba) have not ruled out the possibility.

I do not mean this to spread fear among queer/trans people and allies. This policy is already being challenged legally in Saskatchewan. This is not a story of how we are losing, but of how we must continue to fight for our rights. If you live in Saskatchewan, or anywhere in Canada, I encourage you to write to your government representatives demanding support for trans kids, not the singling out of them. If you live outside of Canada, keep up with the kinds of laws your government is proposing about trans people: these kinds of laws can happen anywhere.

you guys are so annoying. why do i have to see discourse every year that's like "was tolkien really a woke king or was he your conservative uncle?" the guy was a devout catholic and a genteel misogynist who maintained lifelong friendships with queer people and women, and this isn't even paradoxical because that was part of the upper-class oxford culture he was immersed in. tolkien told the nazis to fuck off (and in doing so demonstrated a real understanding of what racism is and why it's harmful, beyond simply "these guys are bad news because they're who my country is at war with right now") but his inner life was marked by internalized racism that is deeply and inextricably woven into the art that he made. he foolishly described himself as an anarcho-monarchist, and it's kind of crazy to see people on this website passionately arguing that he likely never meaningfully engaged with anarchist theory, because...yeah, no shit, of course he didn't. tolkien didn't have to engage with most sociopolitical theory because as an upper-class englishman of his position, he was never affected by any of the issues that this theory is concerned with. what is plainly obvious from reading both his fiction and letters is that tolkien's ideal political system was that the divinely ordained god-king would rise up and rule in perfect justice and humility; he didn't want a government, he wanted a king arthur, even though (obviously) he was aware that outcome was impossible. why is it so hard for people to accept that he was just some guy! his letters aren't a code you have to crack. no amount of arguing or tumblr-level analysis is going to one day reveal a rhetorically airtight internally consistent worldview spanning jrrt's fiction, academic work, and personal writings, thereby "solving" the question of whether he was a woke king or your conservative uncle. his ideology was extremely inconsistent because, at the end of the day, he was just some guy.
