I hope that when I officially start reading mdzs again, it'll work the same magic as when I first started reading it. Like I was already struggling with English at that time, but when I read mdzs I felt like a whole fucking bachelors degree because of the amount of mental notes I was taking as I read along (so much so that I could write multiple essays if I'd have trusted myself more back then).

But yeah, if I finish rereading Vol.1 and I haven't got at least a few Tumblr rants out by then (or even just some observations), I'm gonna be very disappointed.

i think it’s interesting how people often characterize lan wangji’s perspective of wei wuxian during and after the yiling laozi arc like “free my man, he did nothing wrong.” but to me, i feel like this is just selling short his character and his devotion to wwx. the way i see it, when wei wuxian is at his worst and in the years after when wwx comes back, lan wangji isn’t condoning his actions of that era. it’s more like, “i know you were trying to do the right thing, and things spiraled out of control, and i failed to help you back then, and i won’t fail you again.” it’s not wei wuxian’s actions that lan wangji is so defensive of but his intentions. even if lwj didn’t know at the time (and even when he comes back, at first) why wwx chose the ghostly path and gave up righteous cultivation, he has an unshakeable faith in wwx’s moral code, that wwx will do what he feels is right. or at least, doing what he thinks he needs to do to survive. this doesn’t necessarily mean that lan zhan thinks what wwx did as his mental state eroded WAS right. we see this so many times when lan zhan tries to help him, hoping that wwx will return to gusu with him. it’s not until it’s too late, when wwx is truly breaking down, that he understands that that wasn’t the right way to help wwx. the right way is to just be there for him, which is what he does when wwx returns. letting wwx make his own decisions while showing him that there is still someone who believes in him. imo this is much more meaningful than the other interpretation that i see a lot that i mentioned above. it’s about being there for wei wuxian even if he does make the wrong decisions because at the end of the day he knows that wwx, at his core, has good intentions.

Golden Core Sacrifice

MXTX wrote the golden core sacrifice the way she did for a reason!

Look, if she wanted WWX to give up his golden core for JC there were many different ways JC could have lost it, but I think this is why I never understood people who say JC never loved WWX.

By choosing to protect WWX he not only is giving a statement that he does in fact love WWX, whether that love is familial or platonic or romantic you pick, but he's putting WWX on equal ground. As someone of high birth he's giving up his life for someone "lower" than him.

I see so many arguments where people say that JC never saw WWX as nothing more than a servant but that just seems off, because would someone like JC, give up their life/golden core for a servant?

Sure ig if he's all noble like LWJ, but JC is a sect heir up until this point. He is keenly aware that people will fall on their swords if it meant protecting the heir to the sect aka him. He is meant to be a leader, a ruler, he is above his men and WWX is meant to be one of those men.

His mother tried again and again to remind JC of that. That WWX is the son of a servant, and should things go south he is meant to protect JC with his life. Even JFM reminded him of that in his last moments!! WWX life was less than that of JC, but in JC sacrificing himself he rebutted that statement.

And when I see people claim that JC is selfish and doesn't deserve WWX's sacrifice, that just ruins the point of it!! It spits on both of their sacrifices!!!

They lost their golden cores for each other, like????!!! That is what makes it such a tragedy!

JC could not bear the thought of losing WWX or worse having him killed by the wens, and WWX could not bear to see JC lose his cultivation, the thing he lived for.

And yes WWX and the whole class/debt system comes into play, but even then I can't imagine a lowly servant willingly giving up such a priceless thing. Forcibly yes, but even if it was willingly, JC wouldn't have had the reaction he did at the end of the series.

MXTX did not expand much on his thoughts in the books and we got like 3 paragraphs describing JC's pov, but it was put at the end for a reason (this ofc is not including the other adaptations). It was meant for us the viewers/readers to take a moment to reevaluate what we knew of JC and his character, (even though were given foreshadowing with the Yi city arc).

All in all this is a way of me saying I don't get it when people say JC never loved WWX.

6. Hi! I would like to request a fic finder. I'm not sure if it was deleted or I just can't find it. From what I can remember, it was after the siege where Wei Ying is already dead. Lan Zhan is suffering from the whip wound but he refused any treatment. I'm not really sure if it was LZ himself that found the incense burner or if someone put it in his room but the fic heavily revolves around the incense burner. Because of it, LZ started to have a dream about WY. In the dream, he is living happily with WY and Ayuan. Even though LZ knows it's just a dream, he starts to sleep more and rarely stays awake so he could spend more time with WY. His body starts to be disoriented and there's nothing that the healer can do to help him. LXC and LQR tried to stop LZ but failed. At the end, LZ finally succumbed to his injury and died but he died happy because his soul is with WY in the dreamscape. I apologise if my explanation is out of place. Third life, he is a martial God. His mother conceived him outside of marriage, so he had an estranged relationship with his father, the emperor( I think?)

There was the amazing symbolism of red spider lily and their tragedy and grave and death.

A) A canon era soulmate au where when you first meet your soulmate you are overcome with this urge to fight them. WangXian first meet on the wall when WWX tries to sneak in with the alcohol, but the drama came from LXC and JGY meeting in the midst of the start of class and so their soulmate match was very public and gossiped about. The Twin Jades had a scene where they discussed the different public reactions to their recent soulmate matches. 

B) Also a soulmate au, but this one was soulmates got stuck together where they first touched for 24 hours. It featured LWJ and WWX fighting and then they got glued together (I think at their wrists) and LWJ drags them together like that to face punishment for rule breaking. Cue LQR freaking out that LWJ’s soulmate was a troublemaker, while LWJ and WWX are kind of besotted with each other.

B. The only thing I remember is that it was a modern setting and wei wuxian and lan wangji were in an arranged marriage (or convenience) assigned by the lan elders. It's not a fix it more like just as tragic but in a diff manner it has a basis of jin sect will be rich but greedy nie sect will be strongest but die soon and so on. wwx is related to xue yang. It's private and completed with around 70 chapters.

Wwx gets half prossessed by the spirt in the tiger seal and they both have a mind war and that's an important detail that continues to be the plot the guy is enemies with Baoshan sanren and they have their showdown in the end.

In the ending there's a whole war ish situation with all wwx, lwg, lxc jc and all of jin lings uncles( and maybe the disciples) fight against jin guo and (xue yang?) in the end lan wangji dies temporarily while Baoshan sanren fights the tiger seal spirit man.

It's very angsty tragic and has plenty of tags I really hope you'll be able to find it! Thank you :)

16. Hello! For fic finder, I have a very threadbare request. It was some kind of canon divergent story where Wei Wuxian befriends Nie Mingjue and at one point wields Baxia. I think WWX was asked to come help the Nie with their resentful energy problems, and they figured out that Mingjue would only survive if he stopped cultivating entirely, and the two further realized that WWX was uniquely suited to wield Baxia because he had no golden core left to corrupt. This is all a very big if, my brain barely remembers these details and is likely mixing up multiple fics: the biggest thing standing out to me is the Nie disciples in awe that WWX could wield Baxia. Thank you for any leads you can give!

Lan Wangji moves to the Burial Mounds and does not recognise Wei Wuxian due to him having had alterations to his face by Wen Qing (so he looks different). Wei Wuxian does eventually tell him about it and Lan Wangji is happy to be reunited with him.

I think he was childhood friends with jc and jyl though and that his parents were alive in this one. lqr tries to rearrange a betrothal between wangxian and calls jfm over, but then jfm reveals that wwx isn't actually a disciple and wwx says that he never actually said he was either, they just assumed. I feel like there was something about wwx telling his parents that he was gonna be in lotus pier the whole time when he actually went to cloud recesses. Any ideas are much appreciated! Lan Wangji according to cultivation standards is just a gusulan disciple, he is not in the run for holding a position as leader just as Jiang Yanli did not being a woman. He was the one to stand up with the smaller people (Mianmian) to say slandering Wei Wuxian was a lie and he was not a danger unless provoked. He was ignored even by his own brother who had gone with the crowd and coming to the assumptions that Wei Wuxian was indeed trying to cause a rift and trying to make a power claim.

The one to provoke was Jiang Cheng, who had no need to call Wei Wuxian an enemy to the four clans after going to the Burial Mounds. He is the one who was made to go to see for themselves, and solidified that Wei Wuxian was doing as Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao suspected.

I will also posit, Lan Wangji had little aid to give as well by that point, he had lied about being on a nighthunt to tell Wei Wuxian of Jiang Yanli's wedding. He also goes just as Jiang Cheng did to "really see" what was going on. Their visits are the polar opposite in reactions. Jiang Cheng exasperated a dire situation where as Lan Wangji tried to at least listen and hear what Wei Wuxian had to say himself and aided the awakening of Wen Ning. The actual listening is what Wei Wuxian wants in his life and to be able to solidly have that which he was never given in his first life.

There is a lot put upon by many that Wei Wuxian should have accepted aid, yet he as a character at that point will not because he is already labeled as a danger. Any help he would accept would have been seen as some sort of ploy by him and yet another blot on ruining the foundation of safety the sects kept preaching about. However late it was, Lan Wangji did decide to take a stand, why else would he have been there when the clans secretly went on to attack Wei Wuxian behind his back? Lan Xichen was just as shocked to have seen Lan Wangji there and fleeing to protect Wei Wuxian from the whole of cultivation society. His stand by Wei Wuxian's side at that point, and after in his second more grounded in this belief, is the point of Lan Wangji's arc. He has matured enough to not let his heart be swayed by the distrust of others in Wei Wuxian because he has learned to trust in his own morals that are like Wei Wuxian's.

The perfect contradictory character of wei wuxian

i'm writing this as i eat chocolate instead of working on my WIP lol - but essentially i've been thinking a lot about when a fic characterization of WWX just hits the spot for me, and when it doesn't. Now whether this type of characterization is canon I think is always partially a matter of opinion, because by its very nature a fanfic cannot be...well, canon. And it is made all the more complicated by the existence of CQL canon and MDZS canon, and the different MDZS canons with different scenes and levels of censorship, and the way fans and fic writers often franken-canon it together. So this post is only my rambling about characterizing WWX in fic.

Whenever I write WWX, i always find it a balancing act. Talkative, but not too talkative; golden-hearted, but willing to question what society sees as moral; confident, but complicatedly so depending on what point he's at in his character arc; oblivious, but not oblivious; impulsive, but analytical. I'm also constantly asking myself "Is this a personality trait, or a result of his environment? Both? What would impact his character if there are different events or circumstances?

And then there's the appearance of what his character is, which is almost just as important as his actual character. The masks or roles he puts on for others, or the ways those around him willfully misinterpret him. How does this character perceive WWX's actions in this or that context? Do they find him reckless, oblivious, or call him morally wrong (even when he isn't)? Does WWX want them to react a certain way, and does that impact how he acts around them?

In my opinion, writing WWX in a modern setting or genderbend is perhaps the most challenging. Not only do you have to ask yourself what personality he'd have if it were shaped by different cultural standards, gender roles, or backstory, a fic author might also want to do their best to preserve his character integrity as a "classic golden-hero turned dark anti-hero" archetype, but have no idea how to translate that into completely different set of circumstances.

For instance, WWX and gender roles. I really love that WWX is a subversion of the classical masculine hero archetype in cnovels. As a teenager, he's confident, flirty, intelligent, skilled, enjoys having fun and not taking life too seriously. As a resurrected MXY, he has no issue pretending to be a lunatic cutsleeve, so no toxic masculinity there lol - he also likes getting swept off his feet by LWJ, and playing up the "helpless maiden" role, and is very much a romantic with cottagecore dreams, saving his first kiss (traditionally that kind of innocent romanticism is attributed as a "feminine" trait, regardless of whether it actually is or not) - LWJ in contrast falls into many feminine tropes such as being known for his beauty/grace, the way he carries the money pouch (women traditionally managed the finances), can cook, has petty jealousy, etc - while at the same time undeniably also has masculine traits. The way Wangxian subvert gender roles and tropes is wonderful and i love their characters for it.

But then how does one even begin to translate that dynamic into a genderbend? Does teenage WWX still have that masculine classic hero personality? Or does she become traditionally feminine with LWJ the one acting more masc? Do different gender roles and expectations affect how WWX interacts with the world, such as how they react to her flirting, her confidence, her heroic tendencies? I read a fic a few years ago that I thought it a fabulous job exploring some of these very questions in the canon setting. I am still devastated that it remains incomplete.

Whenever I read a fic with Wei Wuxian, I always fall in love with depictions of his character that capture some of this balance, these "contradictions," so to speak (I don't have a better word to describe it than contradictions, even though these traits don't actually contradict. Ig I could say character complexity? But people often throw that phrase around without explaining what they mean by it, so). It's what makes him such a cool character to read about. It's also what makes him so unbelievably difficult to write sometimes. So many fic authors struggle with his character, whether attributing a trait to him that he only appears to have, like thoughtlessness. Or project a trait onto him that he doesn't seem to have that much, like insecurity, or not knowing his own worth as a person/or not knowing the magnitude of his abilities.

WWX to me has always seemed to know exactly how skilled he is and what he is capable of, and he at least intellectually seems to be aware that he is not unlovable or worth less than others, even if he is required to act or treat himself as less than his peers due to classism and society. I've always felt that his attitude towards himself, his own worth and his own ability, is a sort of practicality that would come from growing up as a street kid whose only goal is survival, and who is completely aware of just how little the world cares if he does or not.

Then there's the concept of him being ridiculously oblivious/emotionally unintelligent, which many others have talked about before me. I think this idea in the fandom largely stems from the fact that Wei Wuxian doesn't pick up on a lot of small details that he later recognizes and realizes later on. But there's been a lot of discussion of how much of that was because of comphet, situational circumstances, and LWJ's own reticence that prevented or distracted WWX from making those connections earlier in the canon timeline. This means that this "obliviousness" is likely something that would change if the circumstances are different, such as WWX existing in a world with no comphet, or existing in a timeline where he isn't dealing with Wen indoctrinations or being severely traumatized by the burial mounds and a war, LWJ being less repressed and hot-cold etc, etc, etc.

Now, one WWX characterization i genuinely have such a hard time reading is manic pixie WWX. The ones where he's just... chirpy. Bubbly. (Usually really oblivious. Never intentionally breaking rules, he just can't help it! he's just too cute and enthusiastic uwu) I can't explain why, I don't even know why, but it grates on my every. last. nerve. (that being said, if u want to write manic pixie WWX, then write whatever u want, seriously. Don't even think about letting my opinion stop u from doing what you like and having fun)

As for depictions I really love to see: a WWX that kind of scoffs at rules/the system. One who genuinely has a somewhat poor opinion of LWJ's character before LWJ proves himself, because I like a good enemies/rivals-to-friends-to-lovers because that's how I believe he sees LWJ until LWJ punishes both himself and WWX and WWX goes "oooh u don't use the system to self-benefit or aggrandize or oppress, you're actually trying to be like, moral. I respect that, actually. Let's be friends and go on bromantic outings in Lotus Pier"

Or when WWX's teasing gets a little mean, because WWX can be a little mean, often unintentionally so, but still (think WWX showing LWJ porn/intentionally pushing LWJ's buttons, WWX making that comment about JL's mom). I think it's a character flaw of his that adds depth/complexity.

Also, WWX trolling people/enjoying mischief and making people question the "system." I've always felt his first-life self had the kind of annoying swagger that a guy who Knew He Looked Like That and Knew Exactly How Smart He Was that would honestly make me so annoyed if I knew him irl. Like, Mianmian, I get it. LWJ, I get it.

Basically, I like when his character is written to make u so mad you aren't sure if you want to throttle him or kiss him silly (especially if it's a LWJ pov). Or when he acts super carefree/silly, at the same time as he shows how scarily smart he is. It's the juxtaposition. The contradiction. *slaps hand on the metaphorical table in emphasis*

[TL;DR] So what i'm trying to say is, writing WWX is a challenge, but one that is so worth it.

going on a ramble here but do you all ever wonder that if there’s a sequel to mdzs the fact that sizhui is the last wen is a super good plot kickstarter waiting to happen? knowing that the jianghu is a facetious bunch of fucks, someone will be bound to dig up shit. There’s gonna be so much angst and parallels between the OG cast and the junior group.

Consider:

sizhui going on a main character journey arc, suddenly being the target of jianghu hate and manhunt. he has put his past as a wen behind, but jianghu finds out that WN is not only accompanying him on hunts, but also his uncle. does the past really die when you say it has? it'll be so heartbreaking when he loses that pureheartedness that we love about him

wangxian, especially WWX, will be by his side, making sure to guide and love him bc there was nobody there for him when that happened to him. they are also under fire again for raising sizhui in secret

the junior group wanting to help sizhui, but suddenly facing the pressures of politics from their respective sects/clans, just like how the original cast did

jinling needing to shed away the blackened image of the jin clan from his grandfather to his uncle, but it is difficult bc he’s also now the jin sect leader. (parallels between him and JC taking over as sect leader at a young age!! probably in this AU, JC learns from his younger days and guides jinling)

jingyi (in my hc) is the now the Lan head disciple along with sizhui and finds even moreso than before that Lan morals aren’t always right, like LWJ before him. he will defend sizhui, also like LWJ before him

zizhen is the face of the smaller sects/clans, suddenly thrust into the jianghu spotlight and expected to represent their grudges against sizhui

the OG cast feels so terrible about it because the generational curse and trauma just doesn’t stop even if they want it to. humans are humans and pieces of shit. they couldn’t stop it for themselves and now their children, wards and nephews are still on the receiving end of it

bright side is, the OG cast, now more grown into their skills and themselves, will stop at nothing to shape and save the younger generation into a kinder generation

still, the juniors will ultimately have to craft the kind of future they want to have and face down the realities of the jianghu

I think it’s going to be a very full circle, full of parallels and angsty story if this sequel happens. It has to be an ultimate discussion of blood family vs found family and an even deeper dive into generational trauma.

I'm back to frequently thinking about a Transformers AU for SVSSS, because I love trying to fuse the worldbuilding (working across several different continuities of TF, admittedly) into something recognizable to both worlds that's also new. I also love pulling on the elements these worlds have in common: immortal beings, endless conflicts, switching bodies, cores of power, building yourself up to become a higher being, oppressive systems controlling entire worlds, people (characters) who were constructed and are discarded for specific purposes (profit and sometimes just entertainment) and are not always viewed as real people, the creator god might be just some guy over there, and so on.

For this AU, my story outline currently sticks to Cybertron and its surrounding space. I don't have any characters whom I want to make human, I have very specific backgrounds in mind for everyone already, and I have a plotline that doesn't require Earth or humans in any way. Though, for fun, I was absentmindedly fiddling with the idea of taking the characters of a different MXTX story (MDZS or TGCF) and making them into the humans of this AU.

I feel like Wei Wuxian would be one of those human characters who is basically already climbing into the seat before a transformer can finish introducing themselves as a giant space robot; oh, he is DOWN for whatever the fuck this is. However, if I was writing Wei Wuxian as a human in a TF AU, I don't know which SVSSS character I would pair him with as his "partner", as I personally would be far more interested in writing a story in which Lan Wangji and/or Wen Ning (both?) are Cybertronians. (Yes, obviously, Wei Wuxian would be a robotfucker for LWJ.) I'm leaning more towards Wen Ning, because there's the "I rebuilt this guy and turned him into an abomination who acts kind of in service to me" aspect, and also it's funny to imagine human Lan Wangji having to put up with his boyfriend's alien car being a part of the relationship.

With TGCF, making the characters into the humans of a TF AU for SVSSS feels like a reversal. Xie Lian's narrative everything arguably makes him an even better Cybertronian than any other MXTX character. The fall from being, say, a Prime and the Bearer of the Matrix to apparently being some poorly-maintained bot that spends its time picking up trash on Earth in the aftermath of some Cybertronian war? Delicious. Hua Cheng was some half-broken, half-starving, outlier freak, MTO discard saved by the new Prime EIGHT MILLION YEARS AND SEVERAL WARS AGO, and has never gotten over it and never will. And a lot of the other TGCF characters also match very nicely to TF worldbuilding: mmm, my brain likes chewing on the image of beautiful and terrifying, near-immortal robots falling from the "heavens". It's even easy to source internal TGCF characters as the humans if you need human characters, so there's no real need to make it into a crossover with MDZS or SVSSS.

So, ultimately, this TF AU for SVSSS is not going to be a crossover. I don't want it to be. But I did enjoy thinking about TF AUs for MDZS and TGCF as well, where the worldbuilding or character arcs fit nicely together, so I wanted to share that here.

NOTES: This is literally one of the funniest fucking things I have ever read. I am not even exaggerating. These two weirdos are over there being their adorable mpreg kink selves not knowing they are being watched by every great sect, their leaders, and the gods themselves in a live broadcast. This fic ft's Lan Qiren qi deviating in a corner, Lan Xichen and Jiang yanli planning a shotgun wedding, contracts flying across the room, lots of yelling, and Jin Guangshan having a VERY bad day. 100/10 recommend.

After realizing lwj is soft for bunnies wwx star drawing them for him, it quickly evolves into litro illustrated stories of the bunnies’ adventures

Lz is quietly hoarding them but acting like he doesn’t care until the bunnies are named!!! Wwx names them either something stupid like blackbunny and whitebunny or Worse, names them after other people like Chengcheng and Sangsang

Which makes the story go back to wy with the names crossed out, they go back and forth until the names are agreed/wy knows the bunnies names (lxc can help w that, I’d doubt teen wangji would fess up about naming the bunnies after them)

After the whole name thing wwx starts to expect and needle lwj about his opinions and ideas…

Wangxian colaborating to create cute comics, the ideas are many:

Do they put other characters later on? Are they all bunnies or is there other animals? (The annoying peacock showing up as a minor antagonist lmao) are the bunnies cultivators, do they go in night hunts?

It could end up educational, let a Random Lan Elder who deals with the smallest kids see they doing it, reading and deciding that it will be used with the baby lans, and also- copies will be put on the library…
