I really want to recc some fics rn but I don't have it in me to write a full list so I'm just going to recommend my favourite Jiang Cheng fic. As always I recommend that you read the description the fic gives you cause I only tell you what I like about a fic, I'm not good at plot summary!

Out of Mud by blackelement7

This is a character study fic of JC but we get to see some character complexities within the juniors as well. We get to see JC interact normally when he isn't being WWX aggro, we can see him be more than his anger and grief but it's still there. As he's with the juniors we can how he's invested in helping people in his gruff, tough love kind of way. Throughout the fic as JC is helping OYZ (Ouyang Zhizheng) navigate his clan duties we also learn more of JC's struggles of re-establishing his sect through the sunshot campaign. I don't think the fic completely absolves any wrongdoing that JC does/did but he isn't as aggro in this fic as he is in the novels and I feel like that makes sense from how the novel ended (not including extras, I did not read those). OYZ does get a really good amount attention in the fic and it's nice to see him get a plotline (my boy is slept on). The characters that are focused on in this fic are the juniors, JC, and some Wen Ning. We get character moments from all of them. Also this is an outsider POV so we don't get to see JC's internal monologue. We only see his actions and what he says, babyy! (why are outsider POV fic some of the best character study fics btw? like what's up with that)

I think Lan Jingyi is important. Specifically in what he represents: In the Cloud Recesses Study Arc we see how stolid the Lan Sect is, and with Lan Wangji's whipping we see how blinded the Lan Sect can be by its own ideals that it forsakes the morality those ideals represent.

When we see Lan Wangji in WWX'S second life we see the change Lan Wangji has initiated in his own clan.

That change is embodied in the one Lan Jingyi.

He's loud, brash, emotive, unfiltered and sometimes rude, all of which are anathema to the Lan Clan's sacred ideals of comportment and image. While Lan Jingyi does get punished for infractions it should be noted that he's never dissuaded from his own nature. There is no alienation of Lan Jingyi from his clan. Lan Jingyi is fully Lan, we don't ever see him excluded and we don't see his relationship to his clan in any interpretable as estranged.

What does that tell us?

It tells us that the Lan Sect is changing. If we went purely on the Lan Sect we see in years prior it would not be surprising to see a character such as Lan Jingyi continually disparaged for his anathemic nature, looked down upon and excluded for his differences and punished for his 'undesirable traits'.

We do not see Lan Jingyi's passion being trained or beaten out of him. Instead, we see that the Lan Sect, especially through Lan Wangji's teachings and reforms, are doing their best to model Morality and Righteousness.

The flourishing existence of Lan Jingyi is a testament to the emendation of Lan Sect values; true righteousness being valued over the appearance of it, benevolence in action instead of in name. Mercy. Grace.

Lan Jingyi is the product of Lan Wangji's reforms and trials.

We see Lan Wangji suffer for his innate passion, punished for it by the hands of his own sect. But we also know Lan Jingyi never will.

Lan Jingyi is a sign of growth.

i can never stop thinking about how lan jingyi was able to grow up the way he is... he's righteous in his own way and always has the rules in his mind, but he's also undeniably himself in a way that tells you he was encouraged to create his own judgement of things oujg

i personally love playing around with his character in fics and making him a bit of a cast out because of his personality, but it is undeniable that in canon this is most likely not the case and he gets treatment like any other disciple (including of course the punishments when violating the rules) regardless of how un-Lan he is and I'm kinda just !!! about it, because it does imply that the junior's training and treatment has changed a lot ever since Lan Wangji became a teacher and it's so !!!

anyways i love Lan Jingyi. i will continue to play around with his character in AUs simply because it's fun

i love lan jingyi. he's great. #1 most normal disciple of ever. lan jingyi can tell he's not the smartest person in the room and still chooses to talk anyway. lan sizhui sometimes privately thinks he's dumb. jin ling and sizhui will be totally in sync discussing blood, gore, and murderous ghosts, and jingyi will be squished between them going "guys PLEASE stop talking about horrific shit right in my ear." he got a B on a report. he shittalks incompetent sect leaders to their faces and his own clan elders don't scold him because they agree. king.
