Summary: There is a cat. A kitten, really. Black, cowering in fear, chest tufted with white that matches its paws. It is very round. There is also a frog trapped under its little claws and teeth. “…” Ribbit! The cat raises its head. Large grey eyes blink up at Lan Wangji. It drops the frog. Quickly, the frog hops away, faster as Lan Wangji watches it go with incredulous eyes. He turns back to the cat. Then, “…Wei Ying?” or: During another day of rule-breaking and rule-copying, Wei Wuxian turns into a cat and Lan Wangji decides he’s a certified pet lover then and there. Mojo's commments: This was absolutely precious. And so beautifully written, I love Author's style. Kay's comments: Honestly, we were robbed in canon for not having been given an opportunity to see Lan Wangji interact with a cat, because honestly, he's such a cat guy! (Though of course I love the rabbits). In this story we get the added bonus of it being teen Lan Wangji! And the kitten in question is Wei Ying who's running on instincts pretty much, so he's constantly purring and making biscuits. Very adorable! Excerpt: The back mountains are soft with moss and laced with heat. Here, no one is watching. The rules do not stretch so high. Lan Wangji sets Wei Ying down beneath a peach tree, and the cat immediately explodes into motion — zigzagging through tall grass, sniffing violently at wildflowers, attacking shadows, chasing the summer frogs with the devotion of a saint and the chaos of a Wei Ying. His tail sticks straight up like an antenna. There are bees, buzzing wildly as they are shooed away from the small fat cat trampling down their pollinated flowers. The small fat cat, Wei Ying, isn’t afraid. Lan Wangji follows at a distance, step by step, listening to the rustle of leaves, the hum of summer, the occasional crash of Wei Ying body-slamming into a clump of daisies. The air smells like cut grass and distant rain. His sleeves catch on brambles, and he doesn’t care, mindful only of the inkstain blot of Wei Ying darting across the grass. Wei Ying leaps after a blue butterfly. Misses. Tries again. Misses again.

He is sure he wants to spend the rest of his life with Lan Zhan, but he struggles to come out and take things a step further. When an unexpected invitation from Jiang Cheng reunites Wei Ying with his family, old wounds are reopened and he is left in distress. Even in pain (or maybe because of it), he finds this the perfect moment to take the plunge and show Lan Zhan who he truly is, but will Lan Zhan catch him before he hits the ground? Kay's comments: Despite the shittiness of the Jiang parents, this story was very sweet. It was also very sad. And tender. All in all, just all the emotions that made my heart ache. I love how supportive of a boyfriend is and good sibling Jiang Cheng was a nice touch too. Plus nekiwis' amazing art was wonderful and what made me find this fic! Excerpt: Lan Zhan excuses himself to change his clothes and wash his hands. He returns carrying a wrapped box. “Oh, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying whispers when he sees him. “You didn’t have to.” Lan Zhan hands him the box, nestling close to him. “You deserve to be treated well.” Wei Ying hugs the present close to himself. “I…” He cuts himself off and gulps. He is so close to telling Lan Zhan he loves him. So close. “Thank you.” He gazes at Lan Zhan, who stares back. His expression is warm and jubilant with the traces of a smile still lingering on his face. Wei Ying remembers the first time he saw that smile emerge, like the touch of sunlight on his skin, making his heart lighter just for a moment. “Thanks for staying with me through the worst,” he blurts.

I think he would have come home to carry you up into the apartment, if I had let him. It was all I could do to convince him to take notes for you.” Lan Zhan blinks sharply. “Wei Ying?” Huan-ge smiles. “He’s a nice boy. Very polite.” Lan Zhan’s eyebrow tweaks, but he doesn’t contradict it. Wei Ying can be polite. He just often forgets to. “You failed to mention that he’s also very handsome, A-Zhan,” continues Huan-ge.

Kay's comments: Oh, I really loved the setting of the TV show and Qin Su and Luo Qingyang were lovely hosts! The entire story about Sizhui's missing Xian-gege and reconnecting with his biological family was really heart-warming too and I loved how it all came together, very cheesy, but in a good way! Soft and fluffly and just all the good things. Excerpt: Lan Wangji runs a hand across his face. It has been thirteen years since he last saw Wei Wuxian. He shouldn’t cry now. He did so much to go on with his life. He finished his studies, built himself a successful career, and adopted the sweetest boy in the world. Fatherhood didn’t come easily to him, but he has grown beautifully into his role as a parent over the years. He wouldn’t miss it for one second. Still, he carries Wei Wuxian with him wherever he goes, keeping their love safe and cradled in his heart. He doesn’t think he could let go. He doesn’t want to. He doesn’t want to drown in grief either, although sometimes, on bad nights it still threatens to swallow him whole. No, he wants to move through life with joy and pleasure, as Wei Wuxian would have wanted him to. As he would have wanted them to.

I love how soft Wangxian are with each other, especially Wei Wuxian goes through so much in this story. This story felt like a hug tbh. Excerpt: Wei Ying allows his face to be cradled within the comfort of Lan Zhan’s hands, and he shifts so that half his weight is on Lan Zhan’s side. He’s forced to bring his other arm around Wei Ying’s slim body to keep him there. Wei Ying huffs a light laugh and sighs. Eventually, his tears die down. “There’s going to be a funeral this weekend. I was thinking of going. Would you— would you come with me?” “Yes.” “Good. That's good. I want— he should have people there. Friends. Family. The like.” “Mn.” They lapse into a comfortable silence. Wei Ying slowly eases more of his bodyweight onto Lan Zhan until he’s slumped entirely against him. Lan Zhan’s fingers card through his hair and play with the soft strands at the nape of his neck.

Definitely not for fans of the Jiang family, none of them are in a great position by the end of the story, but definitely for Wangxian fans who love a Lan Wangji who's here and ready to be ride-or-die for Wei Wuxian completely. Excerpt: With that, Lan Qiren rose and swept from the room, robes rustling like the hush of pages turning in the dark. Wei Wuxian let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding, the tight coil in his chest easing. “He hates me.” “He does not,” Lan Wangji said. “He fears what you represent.” Wei Wuxian’s lips quirked, but there was no real humor behind it. “What, danger?” Lan Wangji turned his head, eyes unwavering. “Change.”

Summary: Lan Zhan stares at where his hands are curled around the chair, white with tension. Would it be so wrong — so terrible, so earth-shatteringly human, to be vulnerable? “I have been… better,” is what Lan Zhan settles on. “It’s my birthday.” Kay's comments: This story was so sad and made me cry, but it was also cathartic and in the end, it all works out for Wangxian and Lan Wangji gets all the love he deserves. Definitely shaming the Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren in this story though. Excerpt: Lan Zhan spends the day he turns 19 years old hidden away in his quiet dorm room, listening, playing, and writing music between sessions of school work. One might say he is distracting himself. One would be correct in this assessment. At least now, with the halls empty, there is no one around to come banging on his door to tell him to shut up and stop playing his guqin. He can, at least, indulge in this passion of his. On this night, Lan Zhan tends to stay up later than he normally would during the semester. By his standards, “late” constitutes about midnight. There is this unique solitude he doesn’t get to appreciate about night enough. When people are sleeping — when you are supposed to be sleeping — there is this calm. Nobody really expects you to be alert, present, and productive during these hours. There is no guilt from stealing a few moments for himself to meditate, to read a new book, or to compose a new piece. Lan Zhan can simply exist. In his space, doing as he wishes, feeling lighter than he has in a while.

Summary: Lan Wangji left Wei Ying kneeling in the dirt, drawing maps for ants, and thought his life would soon revert back to its natural, serene state. He practiced his sword, he practiced his guqin, he went about his day entirely free of Wei Ying-related complications. When Xichen arrived just as Wangji was preparing for bed, he optimistically thought they would discuss their plans for recovering the Yin iron. What Xichen actually said was, ‘Clan Leader Jiang has accepted your betrothal to Wei Wuxian.’ Wei Wuxian has a very short time to convince Lan Zhan to marry him. Kay's comments: Very sweet story where - in CQL canon - Lan Wangji finds himself suddenly engaged to Wei Wuxian. Really loved how Wei Wuxian has been trying to woo Lan Wangji, who for once gets portrayed as the oblivious one, which fits their CQL characterization at this point in the story, if you ask me. Really enjoyed it and grateful to Mojo for bookmarking it before me! Excerpt: Wangji had not acted unthinkingly in the cave. He had simply believed that no matter how strict the rules surrounding headband-touching might be, the equally rigid principles of hospitality prohibited allowing guests, even extremely vexing ones, from being accidentally executed by one’s ancestors. Apparently he’d had his priorities out of order. And for that miscalculation, Lan Wangji’s life would never be peaceful again. It made little sense to him, no matter how much he meditated on it, but he would accept it. The rules existed to make order from the chaos of the world, and if that meant agreeing to allow the chaos directly into his home, so be it.
