It's starting out with Lan Wangji not returning to Gusu after he saved A-Yuan (and his sister, who also lived in the Burial Mounds!!) and instead seeking shelter at Luo Qingyang's place. We also got more of him being defiant and seeking out his mother more often back when she was still alive. The Lan Xichen POV to finding his brother gone in chapter two was also *chef's kiss* Excerpt: It was a normal day for Lan Xichen. Of course, as normal as a day can be when one’s brother gets whipped within an inch of his life and remains completely immobile. If normal could be defined as being consumed by your worries, then Lan Xichen’s day was absolutely normal. It was not as if Lan Xichen’s childhood was not defined by being a mediator between his brother and his uncle, between his brother and the elders. Surely, this push and pull would remain for the rest of their lives. Lan Xichen sighed. He sat himself on the side of his bed and nimbly pulled his hair out of his sleeping braid. The same braid he tied for his brother every morning. As Lan Xichen got dressed for the day, putting on all six pristine layers of his robes, he stopped at his desk. These days, he found himself almost crushed with the amount of work he had to do. Shufu, at the very least, decided to take on the work that Wangji could no longer do. Lan Xichen knew Shufu cared for and loved Wangji, but sometimes, even he himself found it hard to believe.

Unasaka Misaki's arc will never not infuriate me. What made her character so interesting was the complexity of her doing her best to take care of Miri in a bad situation but being unable to. She hated her child for "ruining her life," but DID try to take care of her, even when she couldn't take care of herself. She probably WASN'T a good mother, but she realized she wasn't and sent her to her father (which... probably not a great choice either, but I think the point was she didn't HAVE any great options). I do think she loved and hated Miri while stuck in an abusive situation.

And then... she just appears to cause conflict and "repent" and act as an almost antagonistic force to separate the main trio?? Her entire mental struggle and anguish and depth as a complicated character are shifted to become almost an entirely different character? And like, changing to treat the ppl you love after a diagnosis could have expanded & developed her character in a satisfying way (I'm not as upset with that), but it was used as a point of anguish and pain for the main characters Rei and Kazuki and, like someone else said, to shame her for being a (formerly?) "bad mom" without even caring about her as a character. She was pretty much flattened as a complex character just for the sake of drama & being a "mom" character

AND THEN THEY KILL HER OFF??? Like, why would you even re-introduce her if you were just going to kill her off for shock points or whatever???? It felt like the show thought they needed her to "redeem" herself via protecting Miri with her life when she just.... didn't. She may have been a... less than morally pure character, but she was genuinely fascinating

Woman of all time. She didn't want her child originally but changed her mind after her diagnosis. She genuinely started caring for her child, but was killed since her redemption would be inconvenient for the two main characters and the story overall.

Feel free to cut this part out but I also feel like having her stay an estranged mother would have arguably been more interesting, but instead it feels as if she's punished for being a "bad mom" in the first place. It feels like there's so much media that says being a bad mother is unforgivable, and this show, though I love it, did the most cliche thing and punished a bad mom. Sigh.

I think it is after the war with the wens. It's a cannon divergence I think. The backstory that I want to know the most from MDZS is Madam Lan. I have so many questions about how that story went.

Why did she kill the teacher? I doubt it was just a fun little murder she committed cause if it was then they never would have let her live let alone let her children be the heirs of the sect. Plus a woman killing a man in a position of power is usually for a good reason.

If she and Qingheng-jun were in seclusion in different houses, how did Wangji and Xichen come about? Like did they have conjugal visits with each other or something? Was it only because Qingheng-jun needed and heir? If so, why was Wangji also allowed to be born?

How did she die? Was it suicide because she was confined to a home and only allowed to see her children once a month? Did she get sick?

Why were her children only allowed to see her once a month? That is a really long time to go in between visits especially for kids who were probably taken away from her right after being born.

I just think there is a lot about her that needs to be explained.

Wei Wuxian and Narrative Agency – Part One

For Xiantober Day One: Genius… albeit stretching the prompt so it refers to MXTX and MDZS itself, but at the end of the day it’s still about WWX – so no harm done!

The narrative is a very active player in MDZS’ story. How it presents information, what it chooses to show and omit, often reflects important facets of its themes and characters – Nie Huaisang, for instance, is so good at hiding behind his mask that not even the narrative can hold him accountable; the present day’s storyline as a murder mystery and the slow reveal of information about the past both prompt the reader to think critically about the truth of events, when the importance of thinking critically is an important theme; and the dangers not thinking critically (and instead basing conclusions on rumours without much evidence) are shown by tricking unquestioning readers into the very same trap the cultivation world falls into, as the information given by the title, summary and in-universe rumours – which contradicts how we see actually Wei Wuxian act – turns out to be false.

But nowhere do I love this trait more than in its treatment of Wei Wuxian – and, more specifically, in its way of emphasising his agency. We’re not just told how much his active choices define his character, and we’re not just shown this in-universe through his personality, worldview and the events he causes. I’d argue that this aspect goes a step further, and shapes the structure of the out-of-universe narrative as well.

There are two main ways this happens: one, in how the aspects of Wei Wuxian’s life that are shown and hidden directly tell us what’s important about his character (which is good writing but isn’t necessarily tied to this shaping of the narrative), which is what we’ll explore today; and two, how what’s shown and hidden reflects what Wei Wuxian himself prefers to dwell on, resulting in the narrative respecting his own thoughts and feelings on matters (which very much is tied to it). We’ll explore this at a later date.

But as for now – let’s explore my favourite aspect of MDZS.

(Here, narrative agency will be considered the ability of a character to meaningfully influence their events and the story they’re in.)

Tragedy, Circumstance, Choice

If we simply look at Wei Wuxian’s backstory in a vacuum, it seems almost typically tragic. His  parents died in circumstances beyond his control, he was left alone as a child with nobody to care for him, he was forced to grow up fending for himself on the streets, he was faced with abuse when he finally was taken in… as with all typical woobies, everything simply happened to him, and none of it was good. It’s just another example of the lack of agency being used for sympathy points, right?

…Except there’s one problem with that idea. We don’t actually see any of this.

It would’ve been easy to start the flashbacks during these times. We’re telling the story of Wei Wuxian in (largely) chronological order, and these are likely important experiences for him! But instead of starting in his street days, or evenat the moment Jiang Fengmian took him in*, we start at the lectures in the Cloud Recesses. That’s not even something mentioned in, and therefore something that’s able to disprove, the rumours at the start of the novel. So why is this the case? 

Well, there are multiple reasons – the main one being that MDZS is also Lan Wangji’s (and Wangxian’s) story, and having the flashbacks open with their first meeting is very satisfying. But I want to focus on something else.

This period doesn’t have to be shown, because what happens to Wei Wuxian, especially out of his control, isn’t what’s important about his character.

We’re not even at Lotus Pier here, where Wei Wuxian certainly has more agency than he would’ve had as a young child, but where the harm caused by Madame Yu is still completely out of his control. Here, he has agency! Though there are consequences, he is free to act, and what happens to him is a result of those actions and not of circumstance. Yes, he gets punished more than others who also take those same actions (due to classism); yes, it’s not his choice to be picked on by Lan Qiren in class (yet look how he responds, twisting the situation to his advantage and ending up tricking Lan Qiren into letting him leave, which is what he wanted to do. He is not at all helpless here!); yes, these choices have been influenced by his learned mindset from Madame Yu that punishment is arbitrary and will happen anyway, so you may as well do what you want regardless. But there is cause-and-effect here. It’s not circumstantial tragedy.

Therefore, instead of our first impression of past!Wei Wuxian being that of an unfortunate woobie, it’s of someone who has the freedom, ability and will to choose and act (and that’s after these initial tragic events have taken place). This is compounded by the fact that before we see any of his backstory, we get a similar impression of him in the present day.

If the purpose of his tragic past was to earn him sympathy points, to make us pity him due to how much he was influenced by events out of his control, this would’ve been a terrible way of going about it… and it’s this that betrays the true reason for its existence. Because now, the flashbacks instead show us how little these tragedies define who he is! From the very start, Wei Wuxian isn’t someone defined by circumstances out of his control, but rather by who he is as a person and by what choices he makes in the present day (which is both a mindset in-universe, and a nice little out-of-universe detail that lines up! Because out-of-universe, this means he’s not defined by sympathy points from a backstory, but rather by his great character writing… aka, by who he is as a person and what choices he makes). And this refusal to be defined by tragedy is a conscious choice on his part, too – but we’ll explore that more later. 

The important thing is that this idea of Wei Wuxian isn’t because of what exists in his past, it’s because of what parts of his past are shown to us (as well as what he chooses to do, with agency, in the present). 

Now, if this relationship between what’s displayed and what’s omitted was just a one-time thing, I might’ve considered it a cool detail or a nice way to establish a character, but not something the narrative is actively focusing on. But it’s a pattern that continues throughout the flashbacks. What, arguably, are the two other most important times in Wei Wuxian’s life where he doesn’t have enough agency to meaningfully influence his circumstances? His three months in the Burial Mounds (before escaping – he managed to assume some control of the circumstances but not enough to substantially reduce his suffering in his time there), and his loss and death during the First Siege. And we’re not shown either of them! We skip to when Wei Wuxian has emerged from the Burial Mounds and is torturing the Wens, or we skip to the present day – both times he has agency once more, because, again, what he’s like without it doesn’t matter enough to be shown. 

Furthermore, I’d argue this does actually contrast the other tragic events we see in Wei Wuxian’s later life. Things do go horribly wrong, but it’s either due to choices he knows the consequences of (see: rescuing the Wen Remnants in the first place), or instances where he still has some ability to act in the situation and influence it within the limitations. If he’d had no ability to influence circumstances at Qiongqi path, he would have died in the ambush; if he’d been unable to do that at Nightless City, he would’ve died then, too (of course Lan Wangji helped him escape as well). The attention drawn to him losing control of his actions in both instances is very interesting, but intentional or not, it’s still his actions influencing the plot. And that influence happens to be detrimental. The very ability to act and influence, at a base level,  is not taken away (though, of course, that doesn’t make these events any less tragic).

So, so far, the narrative seems to be telling us that the ability to act and choose is key to Wei Wuxian’s character. And it’s doing it through omitting his moments without agency in favour of instead showing us his moments with it. 

Let’s see if this is echoed in the text itself before we go further – because even with this pattern, nothing would end up mattering if Wei Wuxian’s agency wasn’t actually that important to the story itself. But thankfully it is, and that first impression we get of Wei Wuxian in the Cloud Recesses turns out to very much be accurate! Though there are defining circumstances out of his control that occur, such as the massacre of Lotus Pier, the majority of the important events of his life are due to his own choices. He didn’t happen to be forced to cease traditional cultivation and solely use guidao, didn’t happen to lose his Golden Core in a fight with Wen Zhuliu or due to some force in the Burial Mounds, it was his own choice to give it and his spiritual powers away. He didn’t tragically happen to get targeted by the cultivation world, it was a result of him acting on his morals and protecting the Wen remnants (a choice which he was fully aware of the implications of). He isn’t a protagonist to whom things simply occur, and that activeness and agency is my favourite thing about him. 

That’s not to say that the times Wei Wuxian doesn’t have agency, or feels like he doesn’t have any, don’t exist at all, either – but they are rare enough to have attention directly drawn to them in his internal narration:

Or else what could he do? He could do nothing. He was powerless. Lotus Pier had been destroyed, both Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu were gone, and Jiang Cheng had disappeared as well. He was the only one left, alone, with not even a sword in his hands. He didn’t know anything, he couldn’t do anything! For the first time, he discovered how little his power was. In front of something as large as the QishanWen Sect, it was the same as a mantis trying to stop a chariot. - Chapter 59, EXR translation

(And even in this circumstance, note that he still does force himself to act – to carry on searching for Jiang Cheng, to place his faith in Wen Ning – and does accomplish his goal (albeit with the help of others)! So even in dire situations, he isn’t simply passive. This is actually also the case with his time in the Burial Mounds, almost certainly the First Siege, and even his days on the streets as well (Chapter 20: he did actively fight with dogs to get food despite their danger and his growing fear of them, rather than just waiting and hoping to somehow receive some more). He can’t influence or immediately influence his circumstances, but that doesn’t stop him from trying.)

Overall, although they do influence him, Wei Wuxian is very much who he is in spite of his circumstances, not because of them. We’re shown the importance of his agency both in-universe by the major impacts his choices have on himself and the plot, as well as by narrative presentation – important periods where he lacks the ability to meaningfully influence anything are often mentioned but not directly shown, which suggests that such moments and circumstances aren’t as important to understanding Wei Wuxian’s character as moments where he does have this agency are. And I’d argue this works very well. Depending on the version of the story you consume, you may end up having different interpretations as to how much circumstances were at play nearer the end of his life – but nobody comes out of MDZS thinking about Wei Wuxian, the poor bearer of yet another generically tragic backstory.

lan sizhui and the rest of the juniors have no idea about the story hanguang-jun and senior wei had together. if they saw the dire situation where they screamed at each other and fought, they’d be really shocked, because: seriously, these two men are so goddamn shamelessly affectionate in a daily basis, how could they ever had conflicts?

jiang yanli, jin zixuan, wei wuxian and the wens’ deaths were basically in the same couple of days. none of them actually know that besides wei wuxian. jiang yanli and the wens think they’ve died to save wei wuxian, but in the end it just spared him some more time. he died not long after anyway.

no one despite lan xichen has any idea why lan wangji was so interested in bunnies out of a sudden, right? he just one day appeared with a ton and they just thought, ‘oh yea, it’s hanguang-jun, we’ve got him covered’

if wei wuxian’s mother saw how much her boy tormented lan qiren and the lan clan in general, from what her reputation precedes, she’d possibly smile proudly

everyone still thinks wei wuxian was the preferred ‘son’ instead of jiang cheng. they think he’s got a privileged childhood for living with the jiangs being treated not as a servant, but as part of the family! they dont know everything he’s been through in that goddamn fucking environment!!

perhaps meng yao would’ve been more empathic towards wei wuxian if he actually got to know his tragic backstory in the streets and with the jiangs. maybe if he got to know him better, before the sunshot campaign events. they were treated unfairly in resembling points, weren’t they, after all?

nie huaisang and wen qing would be like brother and sister if they were to know each other. they never did. in fact, wen qing wasn’t spoken about or to enough.

mentioning the public eye again, for them it’s like wei wuxian was the dishonest and devilish son of the two most famous, righteous rogue cultivators of their age. and considering madam lan’s past actions, lan wangji is the son of a murderer. historically ironic.

wei wuxian is part of jin ling’s family three times. one as himself (martial uncle), second as being in the body of mo xuanyu (biologically an uncle) and third as being the husband of lan wangji, lan xichen’s brother, who’s sworn brother with his uncle (a very distant relative, but a relative likewise, especially since being sworn brothers is such an intimate thing there).

the lan disciples simply saw hanguang-jun, the epitome of righteousness and the king of blank expressions, pick a random gay demonic cultivator one day and let him tag along on his adventures only for them to get married later because, yeah, that’s the yiling patriarch, in fact, why nobody told me my idol had a situationship with the biggest badass villain in history??

from somewhere within, mo xuanyu is oddly satisfied for seeing wei wuxian getting a proper revenge for him and a bunch of other stuff, beyond having very gay sex with the hanguang-jun — can you imagine?! he must think that at least his body served for a good cause!!!

I’m glad you like it!! ATLA and MDZS are some of my pieces of media, so I love being able to weave their worlds together. I struggled between whether to make Wei Wuxian an airbender or a firebender, and that really played into my world building for this AU. While I think the dynamic, kick & flip-heavy fire bending martial style (alongside their dress code) really fits Wei Wuxian, I decided to make wwx an airbender due to his carefree and fun-loving personality, and Baoshan Sanren being an airbender.

Backstory-wise, Baoshan Sanren is the leader of a small collective of remaining air nomads living secluded on a mountain. Air bender Cangse Sanren left to roam the world, and she eventually met Wei Changze, a water bender from the Jiang swamp tribe.

The Nie live in hostile mountainous regions and are earthbenders renowned for their extraordinary strength.

The Jin make up another part of the earth kingdom, and are specialty metal benders. They’re very affluent due to their weapons and jewelry trade. I like to headcanon the Mo clan being sand benders— for no actual reason. I just think sand bending is neat. If Wei Wuxian were to be reborn as Mo Xuanyu in this AU, that’d make him one of them.

The Lan are the equivalent of the northern water tribe; they live far north & are surrounded by snow and ice. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji are the first and second princes, respectively.

The Wen are the fire nation— as much as I didn’t want to fall into stereotypes, it just works too well. They literally live on a volcano & attack the other kingdoms in order to “share their wealth of knowledge”. They have the Jin crafting their metal tanks because Jin Guangshan is a power-hungry POS.

Additional points:

I like to think of Meng Yao as a really crafty non-bender; constantly underestimated because of his perceived weakness. He uses that against them.

Nie Huaisang is an earthbender. He just pretends he isn’t. All non-benders in the Nie clan are still extraordinary warriors— like the kyoshi warriors!

The Meishan Yu tribe are firebenders; lightning benders, to be exact. Madam Yu is a lightning bender. I’m as of yet undecided on whether Jiang Cheng's bending takes after his mother or father.

Jiang Yanli is a healer!! A really good one!!

Wen Ning is a non-bender, but a very good archer. Wen Qing uses lightning bending to defibrillate people.

Lan Qiren IS master pakku.

Wei Wuxian can see spirits!! He is a very spiritual boy!! Instead of inventing demonic cultivation, he invents spirit-bending and learns energy-bending from the lion turtles.

Blood bending is forbidden in the Lan Sect. Lan Wangji's mother was secluded for practicing blood bending.

A lot of people here or at least on this platform really see Yue Qingyuan as like a good person always going on and on about how he is naive or how he wallows in self-pity and over compensates his guilt with letting Shen-jiu getting away with evil and that he's well-intentioned and he's a good guy lol?

I disagree. I know that as a SJ fan a-lot of people tend to dislike Qi-ge as a result because people have biases and yeah it's part that but it's also how utterly useless he is . And tbh is it wrong?.I'm sorry but how is anyone enamored with this character I don't get I can't even ship them that how bad my mind can't comprehend it just can't fit. He fucks up so much and so many go he's team Xiao jiu where? Where is he bro? How come I don't see his help when it most counts? He's against him the most lol. Why does he think so bad of the man who tried to save him when they were kids where is his graciousness does that act seem like a bad person? He has no faith in his character never tried to ever intervene with SJ abuse on LBG, never tried to get to the bottom of his martial siblings feud what scream I favor him most. He just fucks up more of his life let be honest now had he not existed half the shit wouldn't exist. Am I being harsh yeah. Like liu qinghe is more devoted to his SVSS and they fucking hated each other previously. Where is he then? I get that we can come up with theories or explanations but if it is not in the text then I don't except it as canon.

SJ and Qi-ge is like Madam Yu and Jiang Fenigman and we all know how much of a shit show that turned out. No matter how we slice it SJ to me is a character that fits more into volatile characters like LBG and LQG.

In my opinion, YQY is a different kind of villain compared to traditional ones like SJ himself, the HHP Master, Yu Wanzi, or the infamous "Lou Binghe." His villainy is insidious, stemming from a desperate desire to be perceived as doing the right thing, seeking atonement in an improper way, and longing for the impossible: to recreate the dynamic he had with SJ when they were beggars relying on each other. In pursuit of this unattainable goal, he loses his ability to uphold justice, tainting every action he takes. It's hard to see how he could be considered a good person. Lan Xichen could be seen as a better version of Yue Qingyuan, as he is a more fleshed-out character.

All he has is his tragic backstory without that he's nothing tbh. Like the majority I'm indifferent with this character . I get he has trauma I'm just a bitch who don't give 2 fucks because he's boring and isn't a solid character. I hate pitiful characters who don't act and just wallows in their guilt.

she's from meishan yu sect (yes the same one as infamous madam yu herself) and is a wood affinity and of course loves archery and she is on a quest to be the top in her generation at it. she isn't super closely related to jiang cheng (she's the daughter of one of madam yu's cousins) but she will not hesitate to overexaggerate this relationship to both annoy him and for comedy. her #1 hobby in the world is bugging jiang cheng and she will achieve this in any way possible

my favorite bit of her backstory is that she's in love with a girlie back home in meishan who runs a fruit stand who always manages to have her favorite in season fruit when yu xiulan visits...

she will debate jin zixuan (fellow wood affinity) for hours about literally any technique possible and will be the one to play devil's advocate . "but what if bamboo is actually wood and not a grass and you're just bad at cultivation" type vibe.

my OTHER favorite part is that she and lan wangji are actually besties. (has not happened yet within what ive written but the wheels have slowly started to turn on this) no one can explain why. they see the two of them and it's very ??????? but somehow it makes sense .

For its time, FMAB is an incredibly diverse story with amazing female characters, but i see people still boasting them for modern standards and it's like - but there aren't, there really aren't many badass female characters at all. and if I were to take a step further and remove all of the female characters whose sole motivation is enabling or helping a man succeed then I'd cut those characters up there even further. The only ones who are genuinely badass characters with their own clear cut motivation are Pinako Rockbell (suppose if she were younger, she'd be given a man to hype and do things for but thank god she's an old wise woman archtype and therefore immune to that trope), Sarah Rockbell (selflessly saving lives and being a doctor, though sorry queen you died) and Olivier Mira Armstrong (proactively fucking shit up and with a clear motivation what she wants - but then you can also infer that Mustang is a part of her motivation because she wants to fuck his chances up of being Fuhrer lmao)

Winry in brotherhood is very waifu, very not proactive, very I'll wait for you but she still gets shit done and so she's still badass because we all know that strength is differently expressed with different characters so she's still on this list, but compared to her 03 version she's very stay at home, very support role, very all i do i do for ed and al.

Riza Hawkeye... i love her. she's my favourite character. but remove roy from her motivation and what do you get...be honest...

Madame Christmas, for the only times she does appear, she does so because she's gotta help Roy.

Gracia is a housewife :) and we know nothing about her. She is an extension of Maes Hughes. She is there because if she weren't there we wouldn't have Elicia and if we didn't have Elicia we wouldn't have the scenes where Maes boasts and hypes his family up in order to solidify his characterisation as THAT CARING DUDE HOPE NOTHING BAD - OH NO THE WIFE GUY DIED.

Make no mistake! This is not anti fmab. I've written over 300k worth of content for this fandom and I adore every single frame of that show (especially the nina tucker spliced with her dog frame, chefs kiss) But it has forced me to have to create either backstories and motivation for most of these female characters that exist outside of the men in their lives or it has forced me to create OCs that don't fall within those aforementioned categories.

Would it have been so bad, I ask, if we got an Ishvalan character who was not a monk and not in the slums waiting to die? Maybe even a female character? Would it have been so bad that we got more speaking roles for women outside of the military who aren't alchemists? Would it have been bad if we got a female character who was a State Alchemist?

Most likely yes, because Arakawa had a clear view of what she needed in order to tell her story from start to finish, but I'm not confined to such limitations and I'll make Ishvalan characters who are proactive. I'll gladly add more characterisation to our prexisting anime babes because I love that I can. I am a worldbuilder first and foremost and I love making a world that's LIVED in and having such a sanitized character list from up there is really making me not feel like it's LIVED in.

Anyway calling fmab a show filled to the brim with badass female characters is ??? an outdated take.

Sometimes I write OC backstories and ideas for myself that never see the light of the day. I tend to write male OCs more often than female OCs, so I was kinda confused why my brain kept coming up with female MDZS OCs.

And then I realized just how raw-ly women get shafted in the MDZS / Untamed universe.

List under the cut because of potential spoilers for new people in fandom and also so this post is easy to skip for anyone not interested in me pointing this out.

That I can remember, off the top of my head:

Jiang Yanli (amazing, perfect, queen of all our hearts, who is the only girl born to a major sect leader who is legitimized has a terrible fiance and then they break up and then he's more horrible to her but then he turns around and redeems himself and they get to be happy for a little while and then he dies and then she dies and leaves behind a child)

Wen Qing (amazing, kickass, fantastic, a queen, we stan, who dies)

Assorted Wen women like Wen Popo (who all die)

Lan Yuan's Wen mom (who died before the Wen got out of the labour camps)

Madam Yu (who is a bitch and a queen and HIGHLY controversial for very good reason who has a terrible marriage and dies protecting her home and people after sending off her son)

Madame Jin (whom we don't know much about except that she supposedly was Madam Yu's best friend and adored Yanli and was a bitch about Wei Wuxian and had a terrible marriage to a known philanderer that had bastards all over the place, who dies sometime off screen in the time skip)

Madam Mo (who is a terrible woman who treats her relative horribly and enables her family's shitty actions and her son's shittier ones and then dies in short order)

Mo Xuanyu's mother (who was the daughter of a servant, got into an affair with Jin Guangshan, we don't know if it was voluntarily or if he pressured her / cajoled her into it, was the subject of praise and jealousy when her son was brought to Jinlintai and then when he was booted out for being a homosexual and a not that great of a cultivator 'died soon after' because she was 'unable to bear the shame', which I always read to imply that she killed herself)

Qin Su (who gets to have a shitty marriage because she unknowingly marries her own half-brother [who knows he is marrying is half-sister but can't figure out a way to get out of it], this half brother then [uberknownst to her, at least for a while] kills their child for being the product of said incest and then he threatens her before she decides to die by suicide)

Meng Yao's mom (was a prostitute who was left pregnant by her client and then abandoned to the wayside and died at some point)

Women that were abused by the lecherous Jin Clan head (most of whom died except for like, one or two)

Supposedly a matriarchal sect Madam Yu came from that we never actually see characters from

Madam Yu's lethal handmaidens (who both die)

Wen Chao's concubine (who is depicted as a jealous, crass, bitchy, terrible woman and who dies)

Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen's mother (killed the teacher of her future husband, future husband became husband because HE decided that that was the only way to protect her and then she got confined to the Jianshi and only allowed to see her kids once a month until she killed herself)

Wei Wuxian's mom (who died pre-canon in a hunt gone wrong with her husband)

Baoshan Sanren (mentioned immortal woman with her own peak and disciples that we only hear about and never see)

Lan ancestor lady (who self-proclaimed herself as having failed at her aims in life and spent centuries of her afterlife watching over a piece of the Yin Iron until she finally got to hand it over to the two protagonists and then moved on, died centuries before canon started)

A-Qing (who lived on the streets and faked a disability to get by and then died before we even met her and remains around as a spirit)

Luo Qingyang / Mianmian who actually gets to live even post timeskip but only because she quit the Jin and retired from the Sect world to live as a rogue cultivator but hey, at least she's alive and she's got a husband and a female child (who gets to interrupt Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian while they are about to have sex in the appedinces)

The girl who got cursed by the fairy statue that we never see beyond the very beginning of the story.

Most of these are dead, almost all the ones who were married had terrible marriages and only a couple escaped the novel with their lives.

Like, holy fuck this is such bad percentages.

Ask game WIPs: Your Three Thousand Gold <? I am always intrigued by money as a main narrative device 👀 (if its not if thats just the title thats ok too lol)

AH! So "您千金/nin qianjin/your[formal] three thousand gold" is an idiomatic phrase to refer to a beloved daughter.

This fic is kind of deep in the weeds of my "Nie family headcanons" brainrot, but it's the AU where Nie Yinghua lives and is therefore the youngest Nie sibling. (9 years younger than NHS and 17 years younger than NMJ) and the only reason I haven't gotten further on this fic is bc I've been bogged down in the weeds of uhhh if NMJ dies or not. D:

I'd formerly written about Yinghua here (from Chapter 4 of Closer to Grief):

"Everyone dissented when A-Niang wanted a third child, you know. After all, what could she possibly hope to accomplish when the Nie Sect already had two sons, and she didn't even have to go through the trouble of birthing the second one." Nie Huaisang smiles sardonically. "When she died to have Yinghua, everyone later said that she'd traded her life for an infant, and that it would never be worth it to trade a grown woman for a little girl. When Yinghua died, not a month later..." Nie Huaisang carefully replaces the lid of his gaiwan before picking up the teacup and raising it to his face, "I think, the talk would've been very bad if you'd died, Lan-saozi. And I would've had to listen to it, year in and year out until it became old news like A-Niang's death." 

Where we have to imagine that everyone left the nine year old NHS holding the baby while they tried to save his (step)mom. And then the baby also died pretty soon afterwards, traumatizing him forever and ever and ever.

And a bit about Yinghua's name(s) here:

Nie Rui/Nie Yinghua — SO I got the ‘yinghua’ (缨花) of Madam Nie’s daughter from ‘mayinghua’ (马缨花) which is the Persian Silk Tree. I chew glass about this too because this makes Huaisang and Yinghua intentionally matchy matchy names. Madam Nie! Loved! Her! Adopted! Son! Yinghua’s personal name is Nie Rui from the character (瑞) which means ‘jade token, auspicious omen’ and is the exact same tone as the Cui in Nie Cui (Nie Mingjue’s personal name of Nie Cui (翠) comes from the cui for ‘kingfisher feather, emerald green jade’ and homophones directly with 脆 (cui) which means "fragile, breakable, brittle, clear of voice.” This sends me howling in all directions so I kept it.) so her personal name is a matchy matchy thing with her OLDEST brother. Anyway this makes me chew glass a lot.

Anyway it's DEEP IN THE WEEDS of the Nie Family headcanons and backstory with this one.

12. I read a fanfic awhile back where child Lan Zhan meets child Wei Ying while Wei Ying is still on the streets as an orphan. Lan Zhan gives him something, I can’t remember if it’s a toy or food. Then for the following years Lan Zhan spends time trying to find Wei Ying to check up on him using musical cultivation. There’s a woman who he calls to find him, one day she does find him. I believe it’s around the time Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng arrive at the cloud recesses.

I also think, and I might be combining two different fics here but hopefully I’m not, but the following plot is them falling in love while Wei Ying comes to term with the horrific and graphic abuse that Yu Ziyuan put him and other servants through and they end up investigating, finding proof, and she faces punishment. Pretty sure it’s an A/B/O fanfic where Yu Ziyuan forces Wei Ying to hide he’s an omega(?) for some reason. I think a chastity belt is involved that Yu Ziyuan put Wei Ying in. Jiang Cheng’s father resigns as sect leader when her crimes come to light.

13. Hello! I have an ask for the fic-finder 😅

It's been a long time since I read this one, so it's an older fic (at least more than 3-4 years ago). It was centred around MDZS as a story with Jiang Wanyin as the MC and YLZ as the villain. Our main characters had a whole fandom around it, where LWJ is a famous author and WWX a not-very-popular artist who drew fanart of the most hated character in the book "Yiling Laozu" (I think he was an artist, could also be a fellow writer).

I remember there was lot of fandom discourse about WWX and his choice of character to support and how YLZ was always jealous of JWY and did actually maliciously cause everything he was accused of in this alternate MDZS canon. Then, suddenly, LWJ + WWX end up pairing up for a fandom event (a big bang or smth similar), and WWX has the idea of a story where canon divergence occurs and YLZ is a good person instead (like actual canon) and LWJ agrees to write for it.

16. Hi! I’d love your help in looking for a fic on AO3. I can’t remember if it was a long one-shot or a series, but here are plot points I do recall:

- Lan Wangji stays behind at Yiling with Wei Wuxian

- the Lans don’t hear from him for a long time, until people report sightings of him in Yiling

- Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren take a few other Lan disciples with them to investigate

- They almost don’t recognize Lan Zhan because he looks different - he is happy. He now wears a painted symbol of a cloud on his forehead, and allows the village children to braid his hair with beads. He is considered pretty, and either a deity/god or just someone special by the villagers.

I am looking for a canon au where some people were shapeshifters and during the Sunshot Campaign Wen Ruohan was poisoning the shapeshifters and forcing them under his control. I remember one scene in particular where a Wen dire owl was shot down and it ended up being one of these kidnapped/enslaved shapeshifters. 19. Hi. I am looking for a fic where Baoshan Sanren knows about Wei Wuxian’s fate. She can’t interfere directly so she trains Mo Xuanyu as a cultivator. Mo Xuanyu joins the jin sect and has a good relationship with Madam Jin helping protect jin Ling. He leaves the sect and the cultivation world to write the ministry exams for the imperial family. But he is assassinated before he can write the exams. Instead, Wei Wuxian, who wakes up in Mo Xuanyu’s body writes the exams and rises high. Soon enough, he catches the eye of the emperor because his genius and tendency to modify talisman. The emperor then finds out what happened in the cultivation world and gives them an eye opener. Mo Xuanyu’s ghost also appears and reveals Baoshan Sanren’s plan and his agreement to go along with it. Lan Zhan, then finds out that Mo Xuanyu is Wei Wuxian, leaves the sect to go live with him on his lands outside the cultivation world. @darkshadowgrief

20. I'm looking for a fic where Wei Ying babysits A-yuan for Lan Zhan? I think it was Modern AU but that's all i can remember maybe he taught him art?

I'm number 20 in the recent fic finder and I don't think paint smears is the one I'm looking for, not sure about the other since it's been deleted but I remember Wei Ying actually babysits A-yuan in his house or at least teaches him art at his house in his play room? And lan zhan is still at the house he just lets them be I think. I remember them learning about colors or painting something and also that lan zhan wanted to offer Wei Ying a permanent job as A-yuan's private art teacher and offered more than his regular job.

Worst character to write for?

Lan xichen. For some reason he makes perfect sense when he's not the pov character but the moment I have to write for him things just always start coming out slightly wrong. Like what happens when you have a reed sticking out of the water and it looks like it's in a different place.

Although because lxc seems to always be my answer (probably bc I've been writing him for a while rip) I'll also mention that trying to figure out a personality for nie dad was a challenge for chapter 2 because we have like no information on him the one thing being he is proud of his saber. I ended up making some lion king jokes so I decided ok nie baba is mufasa until i can figure out something better + did the whole Maes Hughes thing + well wouldn't it help to highlight the impact his death has on nmj if he's a source of support and tempering and then post death nmj then becomes the version we know in canon. But like, still had so much difficulty writing him because I just did not have a lot to work with and was just worried I was writing him ooc (because there was no ic to write)

The nie moms also had some of that "we know nothing about them from canon and I hate having to make things up" but since I wasn't writing them directly I wasn't as worried about what if my completely fabricated of this character doesn't work! Madam Lan now that I'm working on chapter 3 with lxc and lwj is also strangely exempt from the worries I had with writing nie baba. But that may be because I'm much more used to playing around with her backstory and seeing other people do so. She's got so many different Fandom interpretations that like, yeah, as long as I fit most of what we know from Canon I'm good. (Also I haven't technically written her yet. Only made plans to lol).
