can you do a look at c!dream and their treatment in canon and in fanon through a prison abolitionist anti pysch lens? seems like the sort of assignment you'd be interested in idk :)

hm. so. couple answers, many of which are "why i won't be doing this" but a couple of which are genuine attempts to engage-

quite frankly i am not that into dsmp anymore! my most recent ao3-published fic for it was over a year ago in early 2024, but my most recent written one was before that, in 2023. sorry ^^;

while i think that a prison abolitionist take on c!dream is interesting and frankly i Did Not Like (probably still don't. tbh) the fandom's treatment of him--on both the apologist and hater ends--i don't actually think that an antipsych view of him is particularly interesting. he's not IMO notably subject to ableism, psychiatric or otherwise. (cwilbur, i would argue, very much is--not psychiatric ableism but interpersonal ableism. cf "Wilbur-- Wilbur's a monster now. He's gone insane.", cf "From his perspective, Wilbur was suffering from intense paranoia and delusions." c!wilbur generally prefers psychiatric language bc there is no actual systemically enforced psychiatry on the dsmp whereas he faces a lot of interpersonal ableism involving insults like "crazy" "insane" "psycho" etc.) people have made the case before for cdream facing ableism--mostly involving ccdream--but quite frankly i don't buy it as a major element to his story! c!wilbur is viewed as a crazy person; c!dream is viewed as a criminal, which has overlap but is ultimately a different thing. notably here i have a lot of thoughts on how the social construct of [Crazy Mentally Ill Person] is to some extent different in minecraft--check out my post on princezam and ableism for more on that; it's lifesteal-oriented but i had a couple non-lifesteal mcyt fans say it was enjoyable to them as well :)

the thing with the dsmp is that there are simply not the same systems in place as in irl. things like "prisons" or "therapy" are taken out of the realm of the government; even "the government" is, for a major portion of the plot, a single 16-year-old. you can't view these things as a 1-to-1 with real life. it matters that there are a double digit number of people alive in the world, that there are no structures of policing and government beyond "sometimes 1-4 people will declare themselves a government/prison guards/therapists/whatever", that scarcity does not and cannot exist. the dsmp does not have meaningful psychiatry and you can tell because puffy (a therapist) does not have the authority to imprison tommy (a 16-year-old who sees her for therapy, has been actively suicidal in the past, and does not have a parent or guardian). the power dynamic between them on the dsmp is just .... wildly different than the one they would have in real life and this is because there is no societal power within the world of the dream smp that genuinely compares to the societal power in our world--while there are power dynamics, it's primarily power held by individuals rather than by systems, if that makes sense. obviously there's a spectrum! but i just don't think it's directly analogous enough to be comfortable analyzing it as such without a disclaimer. ideally i would write a bunch more about the disanalogies between pandora's vault (and its social context) and irl prisons (and their social context) but i think i can leave that as an exercise to the reader lol. there's a lot of them!

but, coming closer to actually answering your question: they are using these aesthetics on purpose, and they are using them in a different way and with more attempted realism than e.g. ivorycello prison escapes or lifesteal prisons. the aesthetics of prisons, especially when played seriously as solitary confinement and physical torture being done to an increasingly traumatized prisoner, come with baggage. both CCs and fans exist within a societal context. there are disanalogies; there are also analogies. when fans defend solitary confinement or torture of a criminal because he's an Evil Criminal, that's ... drawing on rhetoric that does in fact very much normalize these things in real life. (cf: every analysis of copaganda tv.) And That's Bad. Obviously. i find that strain of thought really viscerally repellent and rooted in a fandom culture where forms of interpersonal abuse that the viewer may have more experience with are viewed as "real" harm whereas torture and imprisonment are distant enough to joke about. i hate this lol. (this is particularly stark to me bc the dsmp proper actually has a surprisingly impressive depiction of torture in media IMO! it's portrayed as something that does not successfully get information; as something that is done in large part due to sadism, past the bounds of trying to get information; and as something that seriously traumatizes both the tortured and the torturer. it is taken seriously by the dsmp and by the CCs behind it, in a way that it is not taken seriously by all of the fandom. i have seen people argue that the dsmp doesn't take it seriously and... idk, are we watching the same thing? i think we might not have watched the same thing. though i would note that, well, i've definitely also seen the reverse; for any serious plot point on the dsmp there is someone arguing that it was clearly just a joke.) i also mentioned before that i also have issues with the apologist view of c!dream; this is because IME--even before a lot of people showed their true colors around various CC drama--a lot of it was ultimately based not on "it's wrong to torture people or put them in prison no matter what they've done or why" but on .... saying that while maintaining a constant subtext of "c!dream was only trying to help everyone and he was willing to go through anything to reach his ultimately pure and benevolent goals while being constantly misunderstood because he's really smart and cool and selfless and also c!tommy kind of deserved it if you think about it". personally i think c!dream was an obsessive and abusive person who tended to have paper-thin justifications for unnecessary sadism and also he didn't deserve to get tortured, because no one does, ever. solitary confinement is not bad because he was trying to make the server one happy family again and he only wanted good things; solitary confinement is bad because it's torture. torture apologia is bad. full stop. end of sentence.

sorry if you didn't like that answer. it's hard being an inniter with strong feelings about prisons.

i still don't think anyone on the dsmp--or any minecraft server i've seen--is meaningfully experiencing psychiatry, even to the extent they are experiencing prisons. pandora's vault is a prison, not a hospital. i can't really do an antipsych analysis of something that isn't happening.

this analysis is, obviously, really heavy on c!dream and c!wilbur, and for similarly obvious reasons i feel really weird about engaging with those characters. "but you just wrote a ton about them?" i contain multitudes.

What is "Divorcesteal"?

Divorcesteal is a private invite unscripted semi competitive smp using a Lifesteal Mod. Most of it's members are from the lifesteal smp fan community as artists, writers, moderators, etc. While considered a friend group server before being a content server, many members still stream and put a lot of thought into how to present their stories.

Despite using a pvp focused mod, divorcesteal has a more even ratio when it comes to pvp and trapping versus building and roleplay. In Season 1, many members took on massive scale projects as artistic expression, reflection, and of course competitive advantage. Divorcesteal often explores what it means to play on a mod like this as a fan, the divide between playstyles, the morality of killing and trapping on a server designed to reward it, and the irl time and emotional commitment made by players who cannot play minecraft as a full time job.

Many of its members also create art, fics, and webweaves around their characters. You can find them in the #Divorcesteal tumblr tag.

hiiiii things are going. mostly well? i've been having my approximately-yearly ocd/depression freakout for the past couple months but it's....less bad than last year's, which is i guess all i can ask for. hoping i don't lose my job but, yknow, we'll see how it goes lol. i got super into doing minecraft roleplay rather than just watching it and a new season/server of that starts tomorrow which i'm super excited for! i also met up with 14(!) friends from that at vidcon, which was a wild and beautiful experience. i've been struggling some with my faith recently so i haven't been praying as much/it's been harder but i've been thinking a lot of you throughout everything and when i do pray you have been in my prayers. it's good to hear that i'm in yours as well--knowing that other people are praying for me even when i'm struggling to pray is . idk it means a lot to me <33

tbh I haven’t been listening to as much music recently….i don’t have a Default Playlist/Album rn like i usually do and that cuts down a lot on my music listening lol. + no current animatics im super into which is the way i get specific
