Lan Xichen's Promise

Summary: Wei Ying places his hand on one of Lan Xichen's. It's tacky with grime, and it flinches away from his touch before leaning into it. "Wuxian," he says again, "Wuxian-I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." He lets Wei Ying go and bows his head to the floor, chanting apologies. Jiang Cheng takes the opportunity to yank Wei Ying back to him, and he shoves his brother behind himself and his sister. When they turn back to Lan Xichen, he's in a ball on the floor, his breathing slowing and his eyes drooping. Lan Qiren surges forward, as does Lan Wangji, but the man faints on the floor, his hand reaching out for Wei Wuxian. "Xichen!" Lan Qiren yells, and it shakes the other version from his stupor. The Sect Leader stares at his other part, in shambles on the floor, and then meets Wei Ying's eyes. They're thinking the same thing: what happened? Lan Xichen eyes the dirty hand prints left from his other self's tight hold and thinks, what did I do? -- In which a Lan Xichen from the future drops into Cloud Recess during the lectures, burdened by inexplicable remorse towards Wei Wuxian.

🔥 The beacons are lit; the library calls for aid

The Trump administration has issued an executive order aimed at dismantling the Institute of Museum and Library Services - the ONLY federal agency for America's libraries.

Using just 0.003% of the federal budget, the IMLS funds services at libraries across the country; services like Braille and talking books for the visually impaired, high-speed internet access, and early literacy programs.

Libraries are known for doing more with less, but even we can't work with nothing.

Tell strangers, for that matter. People in line at the check out, your elderly neighbor, the mail carrier - no one is safe from your library advocacy. Libraries are for everyone and we need all the help we can get.

...Wait, why do we need this IMLS thing again?

The ALA says it best in their official statement and lists some ways libraries across the country use IMLS funding:

But if you want a really specific answer, here at LCPL we use IMLS funding to provide our amazing interlibrary loan service. If we can't purchase an item you request (out of print books, for example) this service lets us borrow it from another library and check it out to you.

IMLS also funds the statewide Indiana Digital Library and Evergreen Indiana, which gives patrons of smaller Indiana libraries access to collections just as large and varied as the big libraries' collections.

As usual, cutting this funding will hurt rural communities the most - but every library user will feel it one way or another. Let's let Congress know that's unacceptable.

By the way, a lot of readers tend to be surprised about it whenever I talk about it so here's another post to say that independent projects literally live and die by their audience's enthusiasm!! Even if YOU can't support something financially, spreading the word or making fan stuff to create a cool space for other folks to hang out in and engage with the work is just as important! My own comic was going to end this December without funding, and the only reason we've made as much progress as we have towards the goal was because my readers made such an effort to help it find the support it needs.

Indie creators are on our own out here, the only thing that can help us is the audience!! Every share or comment helps even if you think it doesn't!! Literally just existing in a tag so it's not totally dead when someone else goes looking is contributing something really significant to the projects you love, please don't forget how much power you hold as a Reader Of Things.

I don’t usually do discourse on this blog but that last reblog hit the nail on the head. Reader interaction is at an all time low for fic authors and whilst I’m eternally grateful for any and all kudos and comments that I do receive, I feel as if in the past couple of years there’s been this weird migration of comments - they’ve left ao3 and they’re on tiktok instead. So, rather than people leaving comments on my fics, they leave their comments on the videos of people reccing my fics. I see tiktoks about my fics and they’ll have double, triple the number of comments that the fic itself has. It’s so lovely that people are talking about my writing, but it’s just a very strange phenomenon and a very odd feeling when you have a fic that you assume wasn’t overly well received because it has hardly any comments on ao3, but then you see a tiktok full of comments with people saying that it’s their favourite fic.

And I’m going to say something potentially controversial here but not ONCE have I seen a tiktok creator, whose content relies solely on other people’s fics, say anything along the lines of “leave the author a comment if you enjoy the rec.” Literally never ever seen this. And I think that’s a real shame.

I understand people come from lots of different POVs on this topic, and some don’t know fandom etiquette, so without posting any particular asks, let me just say…

This blog does not share copies of deleted fics.

And if you do have a copy of a fic that is deleted, please please please please respect the author’s wishes and don’t share the fic. Anywhere. Ever.

Some authors take down their fics because they want to publish them with different names, and if a publisher checks for previous publication of their work and it comes up with a match…they’ve just lost a book deal.

Some authors take down their fics because they no longer agree with the ideologies in their old fics.

Some authors take down their fics because because they no longer want their works in a fandom of an author they’ve grown to hate.

Some authors take down their fics so AI can’t scrub them.

Some authors take down their fics because they’re embarrassed by them now, because the AO3 notifications remind them of a different time in their lives they want to forget, or just because they want to.

An author sharing a fic is a gift. They are not content creators or even artists that can gain commission off their fics. Their only compensation is respect (comments, not reposting fics, etc).

Please don’t share deleted fics.
