“Did the Ministry send you?” Draco repeated as Potter finally dropped his wrist in favour of fishing a pack of cigarettes out of his back pocket. Potter grabbed himself a smoke, then his fingers lingered over the neat little row of them again, clearly offering. “Yes please,” Draco breathed. Potter grabbed another fag and passed it to him. When he pulled out his lighter next, he lit Draco’s cig first.  Potter waited until they had both had a couple puffs to respond, at which point his response was already obvious. “No,” he said simply. “I don’t work for them anymore. Thank God,” Potter added with a bitter laugh. Draco said nothing. Potter chewed his bottom lip for a while as he thought of what to say. “I thought you died,” he finally settled on.  “Good,” Draco responded, watching the ash fall off the tip of his smoke and into the open air beneath the cold metal railing he was leaning against. For a moment, a cloud of anger passed across Potter’s expression.  “No, it wasn’t good, Malfoy,”  Potter corrected him with frustration, “I mourned you.” His voice was a bitter, dry kind of rage, something that all the wet meat had long decomposed away from.  Draco blinked. Potter had mourned him?  “Why?” he asked, earnest in his confusion.

"-and he's just so irritating," Harry ranted, slamming the end of his fork down on the table, looking furious. "He's always got to be the best in everything, and he's all- all proper, and obsessed with his looks, which is stupid because, well, he looks fine as it is.."

James rolled his eyes, tuning his thirteen-year-old son out. Harry went on about Draco Malfoy enough that it was all like one big run-on sentence, now. James could ignore him for ten minutes and still quote what he said word-for-word. But as he looked across the table, he caught Regulus's eyes to share an eyeroll with him and realized his husband looked thoughtful. So, once Harry went up to his room, James murmured, "Knut for your thoughts?"

"Nothing, nothing," Regulus murmured, looking at the table.

"If this is about Harry, speak up," James pushed gently. "You're just as much his parent and Lils and I. Is something wrong?" Though James and Regulus had married three years after he and Lily had Harry, everyone in the equation considered Regulus an equal when it came to parenting.

"it's just..d'you think Harry's not as angry with Draco as he thinks he is?" Regulus suggested, looking at James.

"What?" James asked, laughing. "You think- what- he fancies-"

"Well, I used to say the same things about you, is all," Regulus admitted, grinning a bit. "In school. About how you were annoying and self-centered, and all. I think if we told Harry to talk about Draco in front of Barty or Ev, they'd get flashbacks."

James gaped, but he felt himself smiling. "Well...a Gryffindor and a Slytherin. He takes after his fathers, then, huh?"

Well, thanks for asking, imaginary audience – as a matter of fact, I did indeed read a lot of Drarry fics this year. A fucking horrendous number of Drarry fics, in fact.

Below the cut are some of my favourites that were published in 2023, arranged by word count.

But first, a note: there is truly an overwhelming amount of talent in this fandom and this list only scratches the surface. These fics all gave me something that I was looking for and were my favourites for a number of different reasons. I hope you can find something new to love here (or reconnect with an old favourite), and that you enjoy these stories as much as I did!

Alrakis I [24M] attended a small boarding school in the UK. There was a boy in my year, a couple of months younger than me, and he became my nemesis after we developed an intense rivalry. My friend [25F] told me recently that our dynamic was "weird back then" and that "it’s even weirder" that I still think about him today. She argued that I talk about him all the time, but I believe the amount I talk about him is reasonable. AITA?

prongymcprongface i completely get what you mean. i had a nemesis (like a school one, separate to my other nemesis) and we had a dynamic super similar to what you are describing. having a nemesis is a very cool and normal thing dw about it. NTA

Meanwhile, Draco’s just trying to live his big and best queer life: working for the weekend, chasing hot men, getting lost in Brighton's nightlife, and making friends with the neighbourhood cats. Why does his former school rival and crush have to show up and spoil everything?

Draco wished desperately to skulk backward in time. Back to when he could bear the sight of his own bed, a bed that had been lovely, in a flat that used to feel perfect, long before he’d ever heard the terms cardiac arrest or beast ancestry laid out plainly. And as though the thought—arrest or beast, either would have done it, really—summoned him up from the Elysian field of Godric’s Hollow or the Black house or whatever ostentatious tombstone he’d made a home of, a jarring crack resounded from the outhouse just beyond the buildings and then, all at once in a hulking pile, Harry Potter spilled out into the grass. “No,” Draco snarled, before the thought occurred to him. It was a twinged up, tissue-deep demand, born in the murk at the base of his spine. Potter steadied himself a few yards away, gouged with the speckled sunlight escaping through the awning of pine. He glanced at Draco without a fumble in his face at all; he didn’t even raise a brow, the charcoal scratch of it smooth. The rest of him looked that way, too. A clean, boring drawing. The dog, a bounding, four-legged betrayal, went for him immediately. With the wooden door hanging open and half a duffel bag sticking out, Potter’s face softened, then. He went down on one knee—it wasn’t quite a grin, more like one kept inside the mouth. The moment trudged by sap-thick and Draco stood there idiotically, watching. From a few paces away, Potter’s blunt accent was simple, sturdy, but the name arrived entirely wrong. Really, he had no business saying it at all. “Hi, Draco.”

Harry has faced Voldemort empty-handed and alone in the middle of the Forbidden Forest, and yet he doesn't think he's ever felt more nervous than right now.

Standing in front of Ron and Hermione, both of them looking at him hesitantly, Draco at his elbow, he feels like this is, truly, the moment he will die. But he says the words. A little because he wants to stop lying to his friends and mostly because he wants to prove to Draco once and for all that he really does care.

"We're dating," he chokes out, steeling himself for the anger. The betrayal. The ire.

But neither of his best friends says a word. Ron just sighs and rolls his eyes at Hermione's triumphant expression before digging a galleon out of his pocket and handing it to her.

"I told you so!" she grins, pecking him on the cheek.

"Right, right, I know," Ron sighs but he smiles at her bragging.

Harry, however, is too busy processing their reaction. "Aren't you surprised?" he asks, feeling almost let down by their lack of emotion.

"Shocked, mate," Ron answers sarcastically, rolling his eyes and clapping both him and Draco on the shoulder before walking with Hermione out of the room.
