good morning, I've been up for hours and already had my plans completely derailed by THIS IS CHICAGO, a podcast that's just 7 minute snapshots of various Chicagoans talking about their jobs, or something that means something to them, no voiceover or even framing device beyond the bing-bong sound that the El doors make when they're about to close.
I've been sitting at my kitchen table with a cooling cup of coffee for hours now. Who knows if I'll get back to my actual paying job today.
#that's a lie I do have work to do today but uh. wow.#this series just came by and kneecapped me.#special credit to the individual talking about being a bootblack for the leather community - and the school teacher!#oh and the woman who goes dumpster-diving! and the guy talking about losing his bandmate to drug use.#just a really really great podcast.#the 21st century radio play#city of the big shoulders

Man, I feel like every clip I see from Pints with Aquinas lately Matt Fradd is demeaning women. Really sad to see it, I used to love his interviews :/
#lilac rambles#pints with aquinas#matt fradd#catholic#if anyone knows of anyone who has adressed this (not a paid substack. im very broke rn and only looking for podcast type things)#please let me know about it#honestly it feels like every other day someone i really admired turns to our polarized culture of hate#i was watching his recent interview with jason evert and jason is saying all these beautiful things about how the women he's encountering#who are dressing immodestly or being promiscuous or engaging in the culture are deeply wounded and matt just keeps jumping in with all these#reminders that yeah thats great and all but dont forget women suck too#and like. we know! we know the ways we suck! the entire red pilled manosphere spends a lot of time pointing it out to us!#but if you dont want women constantly pointing out the ways men have failed us then for the love of goodness please stop taking every moment#where someone is talking about female woundedness to talk about Why All Women Except Your Wife And Friends' Wives Suck#im just feeling very let down

i will say, john apparently having memory issues is genuinely putting me in arthur's headspace in a way nothing else has yet because i feel blind now too. i can't trust john's descriptions as factual, i can't know that we don't really know who noel is and that he's just a newcomer (and harlan voicing literally every character doesn't help at all), i can't even have a firm idea of what's going on, because the person i'm relying on to be my narrator, the same person arthur's relying on to be his eyes, is demonstrably no longer reliable (and for me as a listener it's actually worse cuz unlike arthur i know john's lying about something and that he's got an ulterior motive due to his deal with kayne that arthur is entirely unaware of). it's very good, and it also creates a sense of unease and dread which is good for a horror podcast.
#personal#malevolent#malevolent podcast#it's been days since i listened to that episode but i am still Stressed Out#i am literally nervous while listening to this stuff man i feel so off kilter#it really does feel like flying blind and i don 't like it#i mean i do from a storytelling perspective it's really great#(and it's also the first time i've ever appreciated harlan being the only voice actor)#but also i just want things to be good again#remember when they were good for like two episodes once#that was nice

“So studying drums is not for everyone [..] but for me when I was young that’s what I needed to do because I kinda.. I could play loud rock drums and that was it. And I needed to learn other skills, be it arranging, scoring strings, production.. just touch and grace on the drum kit, so you’re not just playing like crazy loud all the time. Turns out I ended up playing pretty crazy loud on this latest gig but you know.. it’s fine. Being a hired gun and a session drummer and an MD [..] it’s all about playing for the song, playing for what the song needs.. just keeping your head down, I think. There’s a lot to be said for that and knowing when to kinda sit up and play something of interest and when not to. And usually it’s 'don’t.', you know, certainly in the pop world. As I said before I’m playing with a guy called Louis - playing with Louis Tomlinson - and it’s quite a fun gig at the moment because it’s.. to be honest, it’s not that. It’s kinda some pretty bold drumming and it’s kinda like a sort of rock band, not too dissimilar to something like this, something like Biffy [Clyro] or Foo Fighters or something like that.. it’s been really good, to kinda go full circle with it all, you know.”
— Steve Durham talking about being Louis’ drummer and musical director.
Big Fat Five podcast 10/5/24
#love this#this is a long a.. quote but it doesn’t really work without context#and yeah listen to the podcast if you haven’t steve mentions louis and working with him quite a few times#and is just really sweet and interesting#some great music recs in there too#anyway I love how he’s putting louis’ live sound in with these bands#quotes#steve durham#about louis#FITF tour#big fat five#podcast#posted:#10.05.24#louis’ band#lt collaborators#m#okay bedtime for meee

Planning to visit Metropolis? Here's what you need to know:
Metropolis is the shining city of tomorrow, and well worth the visit. You can pick up brochures and newspapers at any street corner, or from one of our many news-kids cycling around!
Navigate around the city following the maps and history on our website! With in-depth guides to all our neighborhoods and their attractions, you'll always find something exciting to do.
In preparation for an emergency, turn on notifications for our City Alert page on Chirper. You can find this page through the red alarm buttons in our website, or through searching for @mtp.alerts online.
Pay no attention to our neighboring city, Gotham. Despite its guise as the perfect summer destination for thrill seekers and clout chasers alike, the mortality rates are high enough that our experts can guarantee you will die out there.
You may have heard influencers like those on Coast City Craniums, famous for their viral quotes: "Everyone is so scared of Gotham, like no one wants to survive anymore, man. Go on, throw me in Gotham. Watch me come out a millionaire," and "anyone who takes the grindset seriously is moving to Gotham." Words like these contribute to the misconception that Gotham is the best tourist city on the East Coast.
Rest in peace, the Coast City Craniums crew. The team at MetTravels extends our sympathies to their families. We will miss you, and hope you reunite in the afterlife with your late friends at Rogues Remember.
In any news, Metropolis is a beautiful city this time of year (and any other time too) and we cannot be more excited to welcome you to the city of tomorrow. Make sure you stop by the MetTravel booths throughout Senneville, Newtown, and the Superman Museum!
#and dont worry about the incoming alien invasion#thats just#a typical March#shout out to my friend for adlibbing the coast city cranium lines#all the text in the city descriptions and stuff for the brochures/websites is from The Atlas of the DC Universe (1990)#The City Alerts twitter page is from I believe Bendis' rebirth superman run?#Rogues Remember is an actual podcast in batman canon I believe but the host was murdered by Clayface#i made these for that really great tiktok trend rn where people are posting as if they live in/are visiting gotham or metropolis#dc comics#batman#bruce wayne#superman#clark kent#gotham#metropolis#my art#coast city#green lantern

"We're close yeah. Especially with our songwriting thing. I really love writing-I love writing with all the guys, they have different muses that you engage with, and we all write a specific kind of song together but...Luke and I have a special relationship with our songwriting stuff. It's kinda like we don't allow anything to touch it. Like even if him and I had a disagreement or something, we'd still write a song together the next hour cause it's compartmentalized in a space that's safe. And just creative and respectful."
— ashton irwin on his creative relationship with luke hemmings on artist friendly
#5sos#ashton irwin#luke hemmings#lashton#ash is very profound in this podcast i feel and it was such a great look into his mindset as a musician#i personally loved it#this is also so fun because luke and ash never really like wrote together one on one until youngblood#so like did they just not ??? realize ???? that this was their writing relationship ????? FOR FIVE YEARS?????#i also adore the way they love each other like#you can tell it's a very safe relationship for them both#5sos quotes

The fact that Kayne critically misjudged John's true feelings and how much their relationship with Arthur have progressed, brings me so much joy.
Not that all-knowing and all-powerful anymore, are we?
It'd do him good to be brought down a peg or two.
#malevolent podcast#malevolent spoilers#john malevolent#john doe malevolent#kayne malevolent#as you can probably notice I'm not a fan of Kayne#the idea of his character is interesting and the delivery is entertaining#but I have no interest in this kind of personality anymore#so his rizz doesn't work on me#to me he's just an annoying villain-y/trickster-y sort of character who pushes the plot forward#and is great in his own place in the narrative#plus all the 4th wall break jokes are really funny#so I like (or rather okay with) him narrative-wise#but personally he makes my teeth ache#figuratively speaking#all in all his appearances are perfectly timed I think 👌#upd. OH WAIT#if Kayne keeps making mistakes like this#while still thinking he's the know-it-all#he'll actually be interesting for me???#KEEP IT UP PLEASE

I'm about halfway to two thirds through You Feel It Just Below the Ribs, and asdjasdlkajsadjal
The reveals, the implications, I can't even - mentally I'm rolling on the floor frothing at the mouth. I want to go back and listen to season 3 and season 1 all over again, holy shiiiiit
#viv18chatter#within the wires#you feel it just below the ribs#bless my library for having such a great collection#did not expect to find a book written for an alternative history podcast in its repertoire#but have it they did! all three versions I might add - physical digital and audio#anyways point is shit is really coming out now and I am loving the fictional tea#both from the ''actual'' autobiography and the side implications of the footnotes and interludes#well in between wanting to shake the fictional authors of said footnotes and interludes lol#''edited for clarity'' edited HOW? Was the writing smudged or otherwise unclear and you made your best guess?#did you change words around that YOU thought didn't make sense?#TELL ME WHAT WAS EDITED DAMMIT#and that's not even getting into the VERY opinionated footnotes and interludes#I know it would be expensive and tricky to make#but man I would love if the authors were able to make a special edition of this book#that looked like the actual manuscript#or like ... the one that was released in-universe that was being beta'd by the publishers - so we see the handwritten pages with smudges#the faded typewriter pages#with the publishers notes etc all over it#oooh stretch goal of the internal communications while going over the manuscript would prbably be a fun aside too#sometimes I wonder if there weren't multiple people making footnotes (though only one making the interludes I think)#because sometimes they vary quite wildly in tone#that could just be situational of course#but still#interesting thoughts

"When you guys are playing and, like, we all got podcasts and there are big podcasts out there, you know, are going from series to series, and they're critiquing teams and what not—like, at the end, do you know who's chirping you? Do you pay attention to that shit? Do you know who's on your side? Do you know who's, you know, rooting against you? Do you guys pay attention to that kind-of stuff? I'm just curious." "Yeah, I think this might be the first podcast I've ever done—I'm not the biggest fan of podcasts to be honest. I think—I'm friends with that, you know, [Shane] O'Brien, and [Scottie] Upshall (2 out of the 3 cohosts of the Missin' Curfew podcast), I love those guys... so if they ask I would do it but... again they, I think—I think negativity flows through media so much that it just kind-of disgusts me and I want nothing to do with it to be honest. So I hate the negativity, I think it's crazy, I think negativity in media steers guys away from certain teams... it's like, 'Why do you want that?' right? So I don't know, I'm a huge fan of the positivity, finding the positives in players and not putting guys down especially in podcasts and stuff like that where it should be for the players, right? It should be a positive thing, something that we rally around. Especially as ex-players!" "Yeah! We're gonna pump your tires!" "That's it!" "Well, you still gotta be real though!" "No, I know!" "You know if you have a bad game—" "It's gotta be real! For sure!" "—You gotta be real! You can't fake out your audience either so it's still a business." "One hundred percent! One hundred percent, one hundred percent... and I get that but—Yeah, I mean, I saw all those Spittin' Chiclets guys all over Edmonton's bandwagon so..." "That really bothered you guys, eh? Like, I mean, you guys were paying attention to that. I mean, as evidence as well on what took place on the ice after the game... you guys weren't, like, fucking around, you were being serious, right? You guys—that really bothered you guys?" "Hundred percent." "What was it? Like, the most that bothered you about it? Just the fact that, 'Hey, you guys are rooting for them... why are you trying to celebrate with us?' I mean, was it—is it that simple?" "Exactly. Yeah, get the f—we won, get off... right? Get out of here. That's uh, yeah. I don't know, I don't want to be too controversial or anything like that. I'm a happy guy, I like everybody so... whatever." "They're all good dudes, man. Listen if they're into hockey and they're talking about hockey thats a positive one way or the other!" "Oh, they're growing the game! They're growing the game! Huge! And they're doing a great job and I've spoke with Biz [Paul Bissonnette] a few times and I know Whit [Ryan Whitney] (Cohosts of Spittin' Chiclets) and I've got no issues with any of 'em. Truly."

#aaron ekblad#florida panthers#i love when ekky gets petty i think he should be petty more often#“im a chill happy peace loving guy” NO YOU ARE NOT SWEETHEART LMAOOOOOOO#its the way ekky tries to portray himself and the way he actually comes off thats so special to me#matthew “we dont listen to outside noise!” vs ekky “i remember the names of all my detractors and will write them in blood”#“negativity flows through media so much that it just kind-of disgusts me and I want nothing to do with it to be honest”#said like a man who went first overall to a team that was basically seen as a suffering hellhole for years#and has so much negative media focused on him for fucking ages#“wow that really bothered you” “yep (refuses to elaborate)”#“so like what about THAT bothered you? (proceeds to sus out his feelings)” “exactly” ITS LIKE PULLING TEETH WITH THIS GUY#“get off—” you absolutely know he was gonna say “get off our dicks” oh you know he wanted to say it. thought about it.#and went i cant be that crass in public despite the fact im allowed to say fuck multiple times.#i would pay so much money to get a completely unfiltered conversation with ekky SO MUCH MONEY#unfortunately i think you should be more controversial ekky#say what you really feel baby!#i love the podcast that shall not be named slander like yeah ekky im glad we're on the same page about this#the whatever after he goes im a happy guy i love everyone you doing a great job convincing us this didnt affect you at all#i love ekky so much you dont understand

can i be mean for a second. it's great that people care & are thinking seriously about literacy education but i think it's sort of embarrassing that everyone's main source is a podcast. also a podcast cannot possibly make you an expert in the complicated social, developmental, & pedagogical questions of reading education. i really think a lot of what's happened is that it's compelling to imagine that we can resolve a profound social problem with a skill that many of us learned as young children (phonics!). in my experience, this narrative has specifically conservative appeal. none of this to say that i think we should toss out every neuropsych paper about literacy acquisition or whatever, but i do insist that there's a difference between the 'science of reading' as an evolving body of knowledge & practice and the (contentious & also evolving, lol) popular idea of what literacy education at any level ought to look like. also, um, did they ever fix that replication crisis, or
#haven't listened to the podcast i'm sure it's great i'm not a podcasts guy but i really have no problem with the podcast itself#my problem is with this like fervor without much content or expertise. also it feels like a way for some interests to undermine schools#not arguing the general conclusion that many schools have been doing the wrong thing! just saying like: not loving the public conversation#maybe other places do not have weirdo conservative local orgs trying to run lightly supervised phonics tutoring w/o credentials??#also 'science of reading' is now basically a buzzword but i don't think it's been accompanied by a robust public understanding -#of literacy acquisition. which is actually more or less fine imo! if you're a parent read with your kid & engage with them#if you're a teacher seek prof dev. everyone else um mind your own business? be kind to people around you??#maybe flex those phonics skills by reading some of the papers we're all so proud to vaguely know about idk#perhaps notice their methodological limitations & specific frameworks. consider how contingent our knowledge is.#feel free to argue with me i'm sure i'm being unjust &/or ornery here! would love recs if you have them
