The crowd roared as Aleksander Barkov stood at center ice, shifting his weight slightly while holding his daughter securely in his arms. The Panthers had just finished the ceremony honoring his 1000th NHL game.

Y/n stood beside him, beaming with pride as the jumbotron replayed his career highlights - his first NHL goal, his first game as captain, game-winning moments, assists. She then glanced at their baby, dressed in a tiny Panthers jersey with "Barkov" printed across the back, and couldn't help but smile at how fascinated she looked by the flashing lights above.

Aleks leaned down, pressing a kiss to their child's forehead before meeting Y/n’s gaze. "Crazy, huh?" he murmured, barely audible over the standing ovation.

She squeezed his arm. "You deserve all of it, Sasha."

His teammates skated up, clapping his back, tapping his helmet, and cooing at the baby in his arms. Matthew grinned, reaching out as if to take the baby. "So, first game soon?"

Barkov rolled his eyes playfully. "Give her a few years."

The ceremony wrapped up, and soon they were back home, celebrating as a family. Y/n had planned a quiet night, just the three of them, a cake she knew he'd say was too much, and a framed jersey with "1000" stitched on the back.

Sasha walked in and saw it, shaking his head with a soft laugh. "You really didn’t have to do all this."

Y/n shrugged. "You don’t celebrate yourself enough. So I make it my job to do so." She smiled.

He set the baby down in her high chair, crouching to her level. "What do you think, little one? Big number, huh?" The baby babbled in response, smacking her hands on the tray, making both parents laugh.

Y/n watched as Sasha lifted their daughter again, swaying gently as if dancing with her. Her heart swelled at the sight, this big, strong, talented captain, who commanded respect on the ice, but at home, he was just Sasha. Their daughter's favorite person. Her favorite person.

After dinner, they settled into the couch, the baby snuggled against Sasha’s chest, eyes fluttering shut as he absentmindedly traced patterns along her back. Y/n curled up beside them, resting her head on his shoulder.

"You know, I remember your first game," she murmured, a nostalgic smile playing on her lips. "You were just a quiet rookie, so serious, so focused. And now…"

He hummed, glancing down at their sleeping child, his expression softening. "Now I have more to play for."

Y/n reached for his hand, lacing their fingers together. "Here’s to a thousand more," she teased, clinking her glass of sparkling cider against his.

He huffed a quiet laugh, shaking his head before leaning in to kiss her. "Maybe not a thousand," he murmured, his lips lingering against hers, "but as long as I have you two, I’m good with whatever comes next."

update: unfortunately, the game did not reach the mythical 6OT (it ended in the fourth, the sixth longest NHL game in history) but on the other hand, the panthers won and keep winning which means at least we get victory rats…

The story of the rats goes back to Oct. 8, 1995. Prior to a game against the Calgary Flames, a rat appeared in the Panthers’ locker room in the old Miami Arena. Former Panthers’ captain Scott Mellanby jumped up, grabbed a stick, and smacked the pesky rodent against a wall. Later that night, Mellanby scored two goals, leading then Panthers’ goalie John Vanbiesbrouck to quip, “He scored a rat trick”.
