This a thousand times yes!!! Let's take a story with beautiful characters and make them even more beautiful (and tragic). For anyone who finds themselves in the fanfiction space, I believe there was a nugget of doubt, of dissatisfaction for how one person told an epic story in the late nineties and early two-thousands. And how we each find what we are searching for will vary from person to person. But I believe it is all there, buried in canon. It's the magic of the series. It's why we keep coming back and why the opportunity for fanfiction is so rich.

So whether in canon you find Severus one of the most unfairly tragic characters ever, Lily a brushed over phenomena, Regulus an absent major player and complete enigma, James a disappointingly shallow teen, Peter an overly simplified villain, Sirius an untreated trauma survivor, Remus a confusing juxtaposition or Dumbledore a morally grey flawed man who breeds secrecy like thestrals (I believe all of these things), there is always more to uncover. Of the characters we witness alive in canon all are trauma survivors. They are unreliable narrators, whether or not that was the author's original intent. They conflict each other, the memories we see are biased (as are sweeping statements presented as fact), and outside accounts of them in their youth are equally skewed by time and perspective. It is perfect fodder to go with your gut and run wild. And if I have to put in the hours of reading, of dreaming and writing to make it happen, I will. Because it is healing soul magic to find internal peace.

We might not find what we are each searching for in the same place but that doesn't make either of us right or wrong. It makes us both seekers and the space is full of creative interpretations where everyone can find what speaks to them. If you can't find it write it.

canon is fake too. i dont know who needs to hear that but it is no realer than anything else. published media does not validate it any more than unpublished media. its still fiction. it doesnt exist. everything is in your head so if i want to make james potter gay for his bestfriends brother then god damn it i will and theres nothing you can do about it. i do not care if its impractical. or improbable. i like it and i will do it and you can all deal with it.

To the people saying "Jason wouldn't have jumped into tartarus for Piper, like Percy did for Annabeth" as a way to demean him. Jason, plunged into the sky from the grand canyon to catch Piper in the first few pages of the lost hero without even knowing who she was, and without the knowledge that he could fly. so he basically jumped to his death attempting to catch her. In the first few pages of his journey, he didn't mind dying to save Piper, and ironically, that's also what he did in the last few pages of his journey. In honor of me preparing (and dying) for medicine interviews, this is how I think interview prep would go with damian and the rest of the batfam.

Dick: Okay, little D. let's say you see a man drunk waiting for a train in the subway. He is beginning to get aggressive. How would you approach this?

Damian: Push him.

Dick: Damian no.

Damian: He is being a nuisance to society, so I will rid us of him. Quite righteous of me, if I say so myself.

Jason: Question one, what would you do if, due to stress, your friend began to rely on drugs? How would you support them?

Damian: Firstly, Todd, I wouldn't be friends with such an imbecile and it is quite offending for you to suggest otherwise.

Jason: uh...that's not-

Damian: And secondly, if my "friend" wants death that badly, then I would gladly help them get there faster.

Jason, after taking in a deep breath: you know what? Whatever. Sure. Right answer, I guess.

Tim: Damian, how would you approach your supervisor to let them know of your mistake if you accidentally got two patient charts mixed up?

Damian: I wouldn't.

Tim: Damian, you have to accept your mistakes.

Damian: Drake, I would accept my mistakes except that I do not make any.

Tim, staring at damian and muttering: I knew I should've just told Dick no when he asked for my help.

I know this probably isn't super accurate, but the stress is messing with my brain, and my coping mechanism is incorrect batfam.
