can I just yap about how much y'all mischaracterize percy and reduce him into some worthless goofy guy who's only there to entertain annabeth as she ‘does the work for him’ it pisses me off so bad I can't even express this in words rn. also grouping annabeth and percy into the couple trend where the gf side eyes the bf and he immediately changes his personality and starts to ‘behave’ ugh omg NO. percy loves annabeth but no, he's not weak enough to change himself for someone, he's not a people pleaser. he's canonically headstrong and argumentative and calls people OUT. reducing him into a weakling who would flinch and change himself according to annabeth's liking is such a bad and cliche stereotype among funny characters in books.

the reason percy is such a relatable character is because he is considered a slow learner, but very street smart. those kinda of personalities are grouped as ‘dumb’ in real life and isn't always appreciated. to see a character like him get represented as the hero is genuinely so refreshing. seeding y'all calling him ‘goofy silly guy who can't do anything without following his smart gf around’ is so disrespectful.

I can't explain it well, but fanon percy is basically the product of percy's internal monologues in the books if they were actually true. (like calling himself dumb and clueless) and it misses the whole point of his character's purpose. canon percy is a HERO, even if he thinks he isn't, his character is to represent that no matter how ‘lame’ you think you are, you can someone who other people look up to, without even realising it.

everyone's like 'jason would be so social media inept' 'hazel would not understand slangs' 'nico is so chronically offline' but hear me out. percy jackson would be just as clueless, if not more. i understand people portraying percy knowing social media stuff because he grew up to be one of the 'normal' ones (technically not bc he endured abuse too, but having sally jackson as a mother surely helped him have atleast something good) but this man doesn't seem like the type of person who would enjoy social media, or consume it that much, I feel like he'd spend his free time surfing and skateboarding. he would SIDE EYE the whole concept of tik tok and instagram bc of the brainrot lol

okay but imagine jason grace who is with the daughter of neptune who is an ‘underdog’ in camp jupiter. her parentage wasn't valued in camp jupiter because romans didn't use the navy as much. they feared neptune, but didn't respect him. and jason grace, the golden boy, was only expected to be in love with other ‘perfect’ people like reyna to hold up the ‘royal’ leader couple reputation. the daughter of neptune had no choice but to be put in the worst cohort, and endured judgy stares from campers. as though they were waiting for her to create a storm so big that it would wash away the whole city.

but jason is love with her. it's a romeo and juliet situation where they both have to sneak out to see eachother because the upper cohort did their best to make sure they both don't get too close with eachother. fearing the chaos that would ensue, had the two rival parentage kids ever interacted. reyna would be aware of the secret relationship, and would support it wholeheartedly, even covering for them, being best friends with jason and the daughter of neptune as children.

the daughter of neptune always feels as though he and reyna would've been a better match, agreeing with the camps harsh standards. and has an inferiority complex. jason would have to reassure her and give her so much love and words of affirmation.

hey sorry if you've already answered a question similar to this but, just out of curiosity, why do u like jason so much as a character? (( sorry if this isnt the case oops ))

I do love Jason, and it’s sort of hard to pin down why, but a lot of it has to do with how I can identify with his struggles (as someone who grew up in a strict household, as someone who felt torn between what I want to do and what I’m expected to do, as someone who’s fairly attuned to the people around me and who wants to be useful to them). I love Jason because he’s an optimist who never lets his own problems affect the people around him (which definitely makes him one of the more mature members of the Argo II). He grew up without true parental figures and felt abandoned and alone for most of his life, and instead of being bitter about it, he tries his best to make sure no one else feels the same, hence his compassion towards Nico. All those scenes with Zeus/Jupiter (whether he’s talking to his father’s statue or otherwise) are totally heartbreaking for me because he wants that acknowledgment so bad, and not in the traditional sense? He doesn’t want praise, he doesn’t want his father to do anything to help him, he just wants to get to know his father a little, spend some time with him, and he’s just such a good kid about it (Percy would go off on Poseidon about never being there for him - Jason is just sad and understanding of the obligations his father is under). The thing Jason has never had growing up is family, so it makes sense how much he wants to protect the little family he’s built for himself. Finally, I love that he’s a little rebel within the confines of the rules set by the Roman camp. He rose up to become praetor, but he did it after joining the Fifth Cohort, which had the worst rep in camp. I see that as a bit of a fuck-you to all the rules and judgment and Octavian-style politics in CJ - Jason is the type of guy who refuses to judge people on their credentials or legacies, who focuses only on their actions, so he wanted to prove that even a team of misfits could rise to the top. There’s probably more I could say about this kid, but that’s what I have for now :)

I like how Sophie reacts to abusive parents. She hears about the fucked up shit they do and she’s like “wtf fuck those bitches” and keeps the same energy when she sees them. Even if she doesn’t know them at all or does. She doesn’t give af. She keeps the same energy and doesn’t let that shit slide if she hears or sees it.
