It means so much to me that Jason is both very much a victim, and he is so loud and hurt and unrepentant over it. He isn’t interested in silently enduring like some kind of romantic martyr. There is no nobility in pain. It is not beautiful.
And the harder different writers have tried to retroactively make him mean and unsympathetic the more i love him. Yes! He’s angry and mean because his life has been cruel and unjust and that is worth getting angry about.

My favourite part of Dick Grayson as a character is that he is never afraid of Bruce.
Like, Jason has his fear of disappointing him, Tim is a bit intimidated and has his hero worship, Damian fears that Bruce’ll kick him out the way he thinks Talia did, but Dick?
Dick is so unconcerned about Bruce at every possible moment. Even the earliest comics had Dick calling Bruce lame to his face. Dick works with Bruce and his partner for years and they understand each other on a deep level and Dick multiple times calls Bruce a fucking square.
Dick does not tell Bruce anything. He does not write home. If Bruce wasn’t in the room with him when Dick got called to go somewhere, I’m pretty sure Dick would not have informed Bruce that he was even leaving, let alone where he was going. The Teen Titans joined the Peace Corps, they were in Washington for at least a few days being trained, and Bruce finds out that Robin joined the Peace Corps from a newspaper. Dick does not tell him anything.
Dick and Bruce have such a fascinating relationship to me because Dick really doesn’t treat Bruce as his dad so much as he treats him like a particularly obnoxious older brother. Bruce treats Dick like his little baby bird who he cares about and doesn’t want to get hurt, but Dick is over there like “ugh, Bruce is so overdramatic” while he nearly drowns for the fifth time.
In early Teen Titans, there’s no question that Robin is physically the weakest member. Aqualad and Wonder Girl both have super strength, Kid Flash’s speed means that he doesn’t need super strength, but Robin is by far the easiest to capture. He gets caught very consistently through the early issues, albeit people can only catch him if they take him off guard, but it’s a lot easier to catch him off guard in early comics. Robin is the brains of the group, the others look to him for direction and depend on him to make plans that will work and panic when Robin gets nabbed because what will they do without Robin??
Robin gets captured a lot in early Batman comics too. Robin is the ultimate damsel, but he’s never really in very much distress? Like, Bruce and the Teen Titans are distressed, but Robin just looks maybe a bit surprised and bored. Robin never seems to take his own mortality into account when he does things, meanwhile literally everyone else does.
Dick only ever really gets annoyed with Bruce. He bever gets mad at his teammates, even when they question his ability. For the most part, Dick doesn’t even respond when they underestimate him to his face. I have no idea what’s going on in Dick’s head, but he isn’t a part of Aqualad and Kid Flash finding each other and him annoying in their first team ups and he never gets upset when they don’t believe in him.
Then, on the other hand, Bruce calls the music Dick is listening to noise, and Dick immediately is annoyed. Dick and Bruce having a turbulent relationship is more apparent later on in the comics, but Bruce is truly the only one in all the galaxies who gets under Dick’s skin as much as he does.
And it’s funny because fandom likes to paint Dick as bitter that Bruce didn’t adopt him, while I think Dick would have blown his top if Bruce even tried to adopt him. Dick had parents, he never views Bruce as a parental figure. Don’t get me wrong, Dick loves Bruce. Bruce does so much for Dick and Bruce is protective of him and Bruce is open about his affection, but Dick just doesn’t view him as his father.
I really think Dick views Bruce as more like a guard dog than a father. He talks so casually to Bruce, but he’s more formal to other adults. He complains about Bruce not trusting him, but doesn’t care when his teammates don’t trust him either. He views the rich billionaire vigilante who can take down a god in a fight as fucking lame.
Their relationship is amazing. They get along great. They’re a perfect duo, they work in tandem, they’re absolutely unstoppable together. If Bruce talks too much Dick will roll his eyes. They trust each other with their life. Dick is never telling Bruce anything. Bruce says “I guess I can spare Robin for a minute” and Dick is like “I would be perfectly content to never return home for the rest of my days.”
Of all the Robins, Dick is absolutely the one who respects Bruce the least. He loves the guy, but he just canNOT take him seriously.
(Do you think it was the time Bruce sent a box of bats to someone? Or the times Bruce gets captured and has to be rescued by his damsel side-kick? Or the way Bruce is like an overprotective mother, coming this close to reminding Robin to wash behind his ears? Or the way Bruce lets Robin say whatever he wants and never gets upset or offended or even hurt?
Or, maybe, Batman tripped on his cape once, and Dick just can never forget.)
#the inane ramblings of a madman#dc#dc comics#batman#teen titans#dick grayson#robin#batman and robin#bruce wayne#dick is the very picture of a saint when with his friends#he is patient and understanding and he listens to them and he cares about them#he worries about his friends before worrying about the criminals#but the moment he is in any proximity to bruce#it all comes crumbling down#he is so done#the dynamic duo is truly just#so dynamic#and i’m aware that their relationship is portrayed differently throughout the years#this is just my favourite portrayal#dick is so calm and patient but if bruce looks at hom for too long he will mcfucking lose it#long post#character analysis

Remembering stuff like Alfred having Bruce and cutting his hair and and dressing him. Which could mean anything but really reinforce the upstairs/downstairs servile relationship. The lack of modesty or shame a rich person has around their staff is something else. And it’s just a like. Almost a Caste system where Alfred is second class and can never BE on Bruce’s level as an equal let alone authority figure. And Alfred is happy with that! Because that’s the story and he is, after all, the butler
[laufire's cool post on Alfred & Bruce]
Yeah, Alfred is not Bruce's father. Bruce is the pater familias of his household like his father before him, and Alfred is his very cherished manservant. Alfred can be a caretaker and a confidant, he can even be parental (-ish), but he's not a parent. (Note to self: rant about the awkward and aggressively enforced line between "parental" and "parent" in Batman mythos.)
IMO one of the most compact arguments on Alfred's role is in Batman: Year One (IIRC the very comic that established Alfred as an old servant of the Wayne family, instead of his original story of being hired by Bruce). Grant Morrison was on some podcast (I think either Kevin Smith's podcast or "Hypertime to Podcast"?) talking about the significance of how Bruce's first act as Batman is to ring a bell to ask for Alfred to help him. We see Morrison emphasize this moment in The Return of Bruce Wayne, where The Bell is a relic on the same level as The Pearls and The Gun.
I can agree it's a defining moment. To some extent I'm willing to accept Morrison's suggestion that Bruce ringing the bell symbolizes the value of asking for help, teamwork, comradery, family, humility, etc—and most fans would be happy to sprint with that interpretation. But I can also juggle a separate interpretation that branches off and veers to the left...
You do not ring a bell to ask for help from your parent or friends or family—you ring a bell to summon a servant.
Bruce becoming Batman in Year One is the story of a prince reclaiming his kingdom. (The Return of Bruce Wayne is a renewal of that story.) Summoning the family manservant is the act of Bruce finally accepting his royal inheritance, after his foolish attempt to slum it with the rabble. A good king is kind and attentive to his subjects, and considers the opinions of his advisors—but they're never his equals or his superiors, no matter how much he cherishes them. They're his subordinates. Nobody is on Bruce's level as an equal, nobody can win a case against his authority, in Gotham. Bruce is the rightful heir of his kingdom. The king and queen are dead, long live the king.
—I know some vocal fans are very critical of Miller, but there's no disputing that Miller's Batman: Year One is the definitive Post-Crisis story of Bruce's invention of Batman, and pretty much every modern comic writer and fan recognizes it. It's likely no comic writer or story has had as much enduring influence on the Batman mythos since Miller wrote Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Case in point: Alfred.
So yeah. Alfred isn't Bruce's dad. The Gotham TV series probably makes the strongest case for Alfred as Bruce's dad, and even then I personally think there is wiggle room to say eh they're family and they love each other but they're not quite parent & child. Everything else—Batman '66, BTAS, the Nolan movies, Lego Batman, Battinson—ultimately doesn't Alfred cast as Bruce's dad, for the best. Recent comics and the later Arkhamverse games try to force the father-son thing, but it's cheap and unearned.
#Me using big words and making grand sweeping claims for flavor? More likely than you think.#''The lack of modesty or shame a rich person has around their staff is something else.'' <- 🔥🔥 Love that.#alfred pennyworth#bruce wayne#batman meta#essay#Finally throwing my hat in the ring on Alfred Pennyworth meta.#I'm really sorry about my other way more important meta. Those posts have [shudders] citations and embedded images. 😖#Saint Vyvanse‚ pray for me...#Duke's Robin movement has a lot of good bits and one of the big misses was putting Alfred into the role that he had.#Big disservice that will be corrected when my school of thinkers are in charge of Duke's big-screen adaptation. ☝️#BTW the reason why Miller haters adore BTAS is because it's heavily based in the O'Neil-Englehart-Schwarz-ish era.#That's probably what Dini and Timm read growing up. Dini's Tec run ❤️❤️ is very BTAS-flavored but obvi overshadowed by Morrison's run.#Also. As a Jason fan.#(You knew this was coming.)#I say even Jason never made a heartfelt attempt to usurp the king. He is petitioning his king through terrorism.#I'm tired. Does this thing even make sense? Where was I going with this? What is the central claim?

Since he was reasonably polite while asking, (for Damian) Bruce didn't even bat an eye when Steph's new bff explained that his youngest son requested that he bring his dog with him after Steph invited him to the manor. It was a bit of a shock discovering the dog in question was not amongst the living, but not by much.
The presence of the spectral canine causing their own dearly departed doggo Ace to unexpectedly manifest was a little more startling, but again not by much.
Danny's sudden wariness toward how well Cujo and Ace were getting along when Jason corrected him after he called Ace he instead of she however, when not a minute ago he was absolutely ecstatic over the good behavior being displayed despite the whole "haunt intrusion" thing was such a clear sign of something soon to go wrong Bruce is now kicking himself for not paying closer attention and being more concerned.
He regrets this more than ever now that he's stuck dealing with the half-a-dozen green or blue bullmastiff shepherd puppies flying around wrecking havoc with their random growing and shrinking a day later. Oh well, at least Damian's the happiest he's ever been for some time, for now. Bruce really isn't looking forward to telling him that they can't keep the puppies and why. Maybe he should try bribing Dick and if that fails, Alfred into doing it instead.

Nightwing with Superman's powers is perfection
Context: Nightwing was shown in the comics he could be awesome with Superman's power. Batman nearly killed his son with Superman's power... Bruce you have to understand why you wouldn't his powers!
Wonder Woman: Superman answer this real quick, if you had to pick one of them to have your powers whether it be for a week or life would you choose, Batman or Nightwing?
Superman (no hesitation): Nightwing. Hundred percent. A Hundred percent.
Nightwing (elated): What? Aww, thank you.
Batman (shocked): What?! Why not me?!
Superman: Be for real Bruce, you know you cannot handle those powers at all. You would go insane and do insane things. In fact, there might be a universe where you did. Plus Nightwing had my powers once and he didn't mess up with them.
Nightwing hung his head, trying to hold back tears of joy while Batman shot him a jealous glare.
Superman: You see that glare? That’s exactly why you wouldn’t get my powers.
Batman: I thought we were best buddies!
Wonder Woman: Oh, now he brings that up.
Superman: And as your best buddy, I’m definitely not going to let you do anything dangerous or hurt others.
Nightwing: Aww, that's sweet. He sees you as that close of a friend that he wants to protect you and others.
Wonder Woman (smiling): I see it now. Nightwing, if you ever get Superman’s powers, it looks like you’ve got his full approval.
Batman (grumbling): Approval, huh? Well, let’s just hope it doesn’t go to his head.
Nightwing (chuckling happily): Oh my God, thank you! I don’t even feel like I deserve this. Superman… I’m telling everyone! You’re the best!
With that, Nightwing bounded off, humming joyfully.
Superman: He really is the most warm-hearted person. Not exactly egotistical, huh, Bruce?
Batman (arms crossed): This is some bullshit.
Wonder Woman shook her head as Superman walked over to pat Batman on the shoulder.

Jason: so yeah I’m on mood stabilizers now
Tim: for the pit madness?
Jason: 🤨 no it’s cause I’m bipolar. What the fuck is pit madness?
#I am very much team Jason is just normally mentally ill. Bipolar is just a little theory of mine but the ptsd is for SURE#In bftc he experiences what could be called a psychotic break down but since he’s the villain it’s framed as his mental illness being his#fault because he’s broken but he won’t kiss the feet of Saint Batman and accept his help. And funny enough I think Daniels is the 1st#person to use pit madness as an explanation for Jason’s behavior. And then in lost days it’s kinda hinted at#but it’s not used consistently. And because ‘pit madness’ is an inconsistent explanation I am ignoring it and deciding he’s just got#normal mental illness. As one might expect considering everything#Jason Todd#dc

Okay okay okay!
I’ve read the stories where Jackson and Crane are like long lost twins or brothers, so we get they could be related but out of the rest of Cillians characters ..
What other characters could be related to each other ??
Personally I think Jackson, Crane and Neil could be triplets but obviously Neil would be the weird one.
