Not to Jason Todd post after years but since I've seeing it around again:

I think characterizing Jason meeting a Bruce who kills in Countdown as "Jason meets a version of Bruce who kills the Joker and hates him" is one of those technically correct but wildly misleading sort of summaries.

In that yes, this Bruce did kill the Joker, and yes, Jason initially hates this Bruce, but using that to conclude Jason didn't actually want Bruce to kill the Joker and would've been upset no matter what happened in utrh makes me think you either haven't actually read countdown or you're deliberately trying to make people who haven't come away with a very misleading idea.

Jason isn't upset because that Bruce killed the Joker! He's upset because that Bruce then went on a killing spree of every other rogue, something Jason very explicitly said he wasn't asking Bruce to do in UtRH. He's upset because this Bruce then took *trophies* from the dead rogues. Because this Bruce isolated himself, away from the city and without Robins.

And yes, Bruce does those things *because* he's a Bruce who killed the Joker...but that's the point! The point isn't that Jason realizes he doesnt want Bruce to have killed the Joker, it's that he's confronted with the fact that he can't both have that and *his* Bruce. Bruce won't stay himself if he kills, even once, even just the Joker.

The fundamental tragedy of Jason and Bruce is they love each other and they can't give each other what they need. Bruce cannot give Jason the justice he needs and still *be* Bruce. And Jason can't return home without it. What Countdown gives us is Jason seeing that firsthand.

(And as an after note, Jason doesn't purely hate that Bruce. He ends up caring for him and is destroyed by seeing him killed. He, in fact, does immediately kill in revenge for that Bruce's death. "If it had been you" holds true, in any universe.)

Okay, so maybe stealing Nightwing's bike and driving it through Bludhaven by himself was a bad idea. Maybe. In his defense he had no idea there’d been gravel on the road when he started breaking. So him being thrown from the bike was totally the road’s fault! Not his. And now he was sat in his sort-of brothers apartment with a growing bruise the size of Texas and a face scraped to hell and back. And that was just what was visible. “Alright, since we don’t have an Alfred or Leslie here,” Dick said, sitting down on the chair in front of him at the table. “We’ll improvise.” Jason eyes the first aid kit he’d set on the table warily. It was looking a little… empty. “I think I can wait till I get home,” He tried. Which, no offense to Dick’s EMT skills. But maybe a roll of gauze and some vaseline wouldn’t cut it this time. “Nope. You’re not leaving this apartment till you’ve been looked over by someone,” Dick stated. “Now, tell me where it hurts. And be specific.” Ugh, older brothers were the worst. “Wrist kinda hurts,” Jason mumbled, holding up his left arm. He’d landed pretty hard on it, but it didn’t really feel broken. “Any head pain?” Dick asked, moving to inspect his arm carefully. Jason just shook his head. “And you’re fully coherent,” Dick added, still focused on his wrist. “So hopefully we can rule out concussion. But you seriously need a helmet next time.” “Hey, you ride that thing without one!” Jason argued, wincing as Dick pressed down on a certain spot. “Cuz I’m a trained acrobat who’s been doing this longer than you’ve been alive,” the man pointed out, testing the tender area again, humming thoughtfully at Jason’s pained reaction. “And you’ve only been Robin for six months.” “Batman doesn’t wear a helmet….” “And we see how well that goes for him,” Dick smirked.

Part of Buck wanted to laugh at the irony of the situation. An accident that ended with a piece of rebar sticking through him. That was Chimney’s thing, not his. The other - much bigger part of him - was near blind from agony. “Hey, kid, stay with us,” someone -  probably Bobby - pleaded. As much as Buck respected the man, he’d really rather pass out now. “We need that tourniquet!” He heard Eddie shout from above him. Oh god, were they gonna cut his leg off? The rebar went right through the meat of his thigh, there was no way he was keeping it. Oh god, he was gonna lose his leg. He’d never get to be a firefighter again. And after all he’d been through to get this far- “Focus on me, Buck. Right here.” Brown eyes drifted into view. They looked really wet. Huh, was it raining? “Okay, on three,” Bobby’s voice sounded. Something was wrapped around his leg. “One.” Hands on his shoulders. “Two.” Someone gave his hand a quick squeeze. “Three!” AGONY! Holy fuck. Shitshitshitshit oh god, oh god make it stop, make it stop! “Buck!” That was Eddie. His voice was accompanied by the pain around his leg growing. “God, I’m so sorry, it’ll be over soon, I promise.” “Someone get this rebar cut!” Black spots were dancing across Buck’s vision, and he wished they would just pull him under. Yes hi hello absolutely.

So basic premise is, the batkids are all first responders while still being vigilantes. It's starts cuz Jason's like "wtf do I do as a civilian" and decides "fuck it. fire rescue". He's got the build for it, cuz got the cpr certification for it. Now he just has to go through fire boot camp.

He gets upset when he's not allowed to participate in the firefighter calender cuz of his extensive scarring. This prompts Steph to sign up to be a paramedic cuz SHE can be in the calander and rub it in Jason's face. Cass joins cuz Steph joined and honestly? Sounds kinda fun.

Tim decides to join dispatch cuz it's easier to access the mainframe or whatever for bat reasons if he has direct access to the building. Which Barbara has already done. But he wants to as well.

And Dick is a cop

Arguments about the differences between Marvel and DC are often so silly. "DC is grittier, while Marvel is for kids", "No, Marvel is edgier, actually", "DC is about Gods and big events, while Marvel is about street level mortals and relatable moments", "Marvel is woke garbage, while DC is for real alphas", or whatever the fuck.

The real difference between Marvel and DC is in DC comics, you have an endless line of indistinguishable white men with black hair and blue eyes, and in Marvel comics you have an endless line of indistinguishable white men with blond hair and blue eyes.
