DC Comics Incorrect Quotes Pt 99
[After Alfred left his wealth to Dick]
Dick: You all get something, so fire away.
Tim: Dick, your friendship is gift enough for me.
Damian: Friendship is crap. I want a Ducati Monster 821.
Dick: Alright, Damian gets a motorcycle.
Jason: Oh cool, I want a fast sports car.
Dick: Come on, you can be honest.
Jason: I want old, expensive books. I'll send you a list.
Dick: There you go.

I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#Jason Todd#batfamily#it's just a fun quirk! it's a fun lil detail and I simply cannot slight ppl for enjoying and incorporating it into works#like obviously jason isn't the only one. I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over#i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin#and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well#duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd#(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read#went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems#point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam#but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it#jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog#damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH#speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro#wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty

I think I’d be funny if Tim just gives Jason his English essays to proof read, like they don’t even talk to each other much but Jason keeps getting sent links to word documents or gets handed a stapled pile of pages at the end of patrol, maybe it’s just waiting on his counter when he gets home cause Tim broke in, however it happens there’s never anything said about it. he just proof read it, makes notes and corrections, and then give it back.
Tim always gets perfect grades.

In fanon, Jason Todd is often characterised as this big literature buff, more so than he ever is really in the comics. But can we talk about the number of literary parallels (intentionally or unintentionally) there are in his character...
(humour me, I'm also a big literature buff)
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen Lovers, in spite of their initial contempt, overcome biases and their own prejudices, disregarding of their differing social backgrounds. This is known to be Jason's favourite novel. Needless to say, Jason coming from abject poverty being adopted by billionaire Bruce Wayne definitely plays into this, and Jason's attitude towards defending Crime Alley and the particularly vulnerable in society.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley A Creature is brought back to life and shunned by his creator, has to learn how to survive in a new world that never planned for its existence and thus turns to violence to seek vengeance on its creator by systemically hurting those in his life - sound familiar? It's an almost piece for piece recollection of Jason's return from death and his feelings and actions towards Bruce, whom he deems to be responsible.
Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky A former student begins to believe that crimes such as murder can be committed for the greater good of society, commits said crimes and is forced to live with the psychological and literal consequences. The idea of 'killing for the greater good' is a hallmark of Jason's, and the crux of his entire character's ethics, especially his relationship with Bruce post-resurrection - not to mention the psychological torment he experiences.
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka The transformation of a man into an insect, and the way this isolates him from the rest of humanity, how his identity is changed and the psychological impact this has on him. This is most akin to Jason's resurrection and the feelings that come as a result - how he becomes something entirely different to who he was before very suddenly, grappling with his place and who he is in a world that didn't plan on having him back.
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens A novel about an orphaned, impoverished child who encounters an Artful Dodger and ultimately joins a criminal outfit who try and recruit him into their agenda, although he ultimately disagrees and flees. Although this isn't beat for beat Jason's story (as he ultimately ends up as the more criminal of the bunch), there are definitely parallels between Jason's experience with being taken into the role of Robin but disagreeing with Bruce's ethos as he evolves.
Cain & Abel (not a novel, I am aware) Two brothers make sacrifices to God to show their gratitude. Cain, the elder, is snubbed where Abel, the younger, is accepted. Cain goes on to kill Abel out of jealousy and become the first murderer. I know this isn't necessarily literary, but the parallels between Jason's attack of Tim when he returns to Gotham as Redhood are significant. Jason feels enraged at Bruce's replacement of him after he, ultimately, gave his life for the cause - his attack on Tim is one of jealousy and rage.

at LEAST once jason (with tim) has dragged damian along with them clubbing as a designated driver (if he wasn't being bribed with driving the batmobile he would NOT be going, zero chance)
they all go suited up because 1. tim won't go as a civilian (bad for his reputation etc etc). 2. every gothamite knows not to ask a robin-boy for ID. 3. jason claims to have never gotten more free drinks than when he goes as hood.
damian will walk in, accompany jason to the bar so he can get a ginger ale, and promptly situate himself on a barstool (the bartenders WILL look out for him + get him free refills of whatever soft drink he wants), observing his brothers and muttering about them being "imbeciles".
it takes a couple of hours before jason starts coming over to damian, pleading for him to join a dance circle, or show off a trick.
jason ends up bargaining down to damian walking around with him whilst he talks to girls, because "chicks dig guys with a paternal instinct" and it's gotham, and everyone's under the influence, so no one's going to question why there's a 13 year old in the nightclub. instead they see red hood with his little brother robin, and think it's sweet.
the one condition of damian being their designated driver is that dick is under no circumstances allowed to find out. one time dick called tim, and he was too tipsy to answer anything but "damian" when asked if he had a way home, and subsequently "no, he's here" when dick assumed (already pissed, and about to rant about how they can't rely on a 13 year old to drive them home) damian would just be driving over to pick them up. they did not hear the end of it for weeks. + going forward jason confiscated tim's phone every time they walked into a nightclub.
"he's 13, legally, he cannot be in a nightclub, OR driving anyone home"
it was worse when he found out they went suited up. tim copped it the worst, because jason had an apartment to go home to, while tim was stuck in the manor listening to all of dick's hate-fuelled rambling about jason and his childishness, as well as what he had to say about tim's own behavior.
for damian it was win-win though, dick loves him too much to be mad at him about it (even though he KNOWS he has the common sense to Not Get Into Those Situations), AND he got to drive the batmobile (he manages to drive around gotham for over 45 minutes before a drunk jason starts to suspect they aren't 'going straight home')

More public domain literature they could do Doctor Who crossovers with:
1001 Nights
Journey to the West
Gulliver's Travels
Pride and Prejudice (and Zygons!)
The Adventures of Pinocchio
Sherlock Holmes (All-Consuming Fire was 30 years ago. We're overdue for another crossover!)
Dracula
Peter Pan (with royalties going to Great Ormond Street Hospital)
A Princess of Mars
Tarzan
The Jungle Book
This has been sitting in my drafts for so long, they've already announced two of my picks!

So true. Robin Hood 𝘪𝘴 the ultimate fanfiction, and the way the legend has stood the test of time shows the magnitude, and the longevity, of the fan base.
————
My name is Jo. During first lockdown, I wrote some fanfic and posted it on Wattpad. It was during the creation of my trilogy that my love for Robin Hood was truly resurrected, a love that began back in the 1980’s, when, as a child, I was enthralled every Saturday teatime by the adventures of 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥. Following on from that came 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘯 𝘏𝘰𝘰𝘥: 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴, the BBC’s adaptation, and a host of films and literature that fuelled my intrigue and imagination.
I have been working on my first novel for around a year, after dabbling in the world of self-publishing by releasing three poetry books in quick succession. My first love, however, is fiction, and my lifelong ambition is to publish a novel.
————
So, here I am. Let me gradually introduce you to [working title] 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘺.

i’m sick and tired of people calling jason a literature buff and then perceive him as only reading jane austen, because, yes he does canonically read austen avidly, but please let him read other books/authors that reflect him like; crime and punishment, metamorphosis, frankenstein, the art of war, the velveteen rabbit, the count of monte cristo, dante’s inferno, to kill a mockingbird etc— maybe i’m salty because i’m a book nerd and no one gets it right, but i want to see people take canon further and excel it rather than boiling down the one thing and beating it with a stick
