“Since when do we have to agree with people to defend them from injustice?”  (Lillian Hellman)
‘In a dramatic escalation of tensions over the role of juries in criminal trials, a Crown Court Judge has referred 24 people, including doctors, a priest, an Olympic Gold medallist, a retired Detective Sergeant and a former Government lawyer, to the Attorney General for contempt of court for holding up signs outside court. If prosecuted and convicted the 24 could now face up to 2 years’ imprisonment.’
The signs in question simply stated:
“Jurors have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to their conscience.”
This message is simply quoting a plaque in the Old Bailey commemorating the historic decision in the Court of Common Pleas that judges “may try to open the eyes of juries, but not lead them by the nose.” This  case “established the right of juries to give their verdict according to their convictions”.
So, although there is a plaque within the precincts of the Old Bailey for ALL to read, a judge has deemed it unlawful for the same words to be held up on placards outside the Old Bailey!
Why would a judge feel so strongly about this?
Back in February –March this year, three climate change protestors were given prison sentences. Serves then right, some would say – blocking the roads, causing a nuisance, disrupting ordinary peoples everyday business they deserve to be punished. Maybe, maybe not, but that wasn’t what they were imprisoned for.
They were imprisoned not for protesting, but for refusing to obey the judges ruling that they could not tell the jury WHY they were protesting, The judge refused them the right to explain to the jury that CLIMATE CRISIS was their motivation for protesting. When they ignored his instructions they were imprisoned for contempt of court.
It is a very sad day when a defendant cannot tell a jury the motives behind his or her actions.
It is even more worrying when holding up a sign quoting words on display within the Old Bailey itself also becomes a criminal offence.
I am usually not a great believer in conspiracy theories but you have to wonder why climate crisis protestors are forbidden to explain their motives to a jury when being prosecuted.

One of our siblings was murdered recently, and you need to know about it.
TW // transphobia and violence against trans people
Brianna Ghey was a 16-year-old trans girl from Warrington, England. On Saturday, February 11th 2023, Brianna was found dead on the side of a park with multiple stab wounds. Two 15-year-olds have been taken into custody in connection with her murder.
Tumblr media
People in the Warrington area have alleged that Brianna was being bullied in school, and that neither the administration nor the police did anything.
Despite this, local police have said there is no evidence that the attack was hate-based and most news articles don't mention her status as a trans woman. This is deliberate. This is genocide by the hands of transphobes and TERFs.
Britain does not have gender self-identification (your legal gender being determined by how you identify and not any arbitrary medical requirements), meaning even in her death she will be deadnamed and misgendered on her death certificate.
She deserved so much better.
Mourn the dead, and fight like hell for the living.
EDIT: A verified GoFundMe has been set up for Brianna.

“What you hold onto is less important than the act of holding on itself. It’s so easy to get lost in ourselves and this world. Sometimes you need to find your way back one tiny miracle at a time.” - The Sunshine Court
WISHING THE HAPPIEST OF BOOK BIRTHDAYS TO @korakos! YOU DID IT AND ITS BLOODY BRILLIANT!
Please please excuse the disgusting things my iPad camera has done to this photo. This is the first time in years I’ve done something like this fully traditional and it has stretched so many rusty parts of my brain but I’m SO GLAD I got this done in time for release day! This book is WONDERFUL and I’m so happy it’s now out in the world!

Homeless Care Package
Some things I'll be buying to make a care package for my local homeless person:
Socks, t- shirt, maybe underwear if it's not too weird, he probably needs it though
Dried foods; jerky, granola bars and dried fruit etc
Tasty sweet treat like a chocolate bar
Instant coffee
Thermos bottle
2 hot water bottles
Multivitamins
Bottled waters
Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
Bar of soap
Nail clipper
Small first aid kit
Gift card to a grocery store
Rain poncho
Sunscreen
Thermal blanket
Personal note letting him know that his situation is not his fault because the government and society is supposed to take care of people, but they don't because of greed and short sightedness
Feel free to take inspiration and make a care package for a homeless person in your city/town. You don't have to show your face, you can wear a face mask and sunglasses, and go with a friend if you're nervous.
It's a small gesture that can go a long way in giving a person hope. Even just cash or a grocery store gift card is a good thing to give. Life is unpredictable. It can take a turn for the worse and suddenly become very hard for anyone
We were never meant to go it alone.

Only a few moments after the end of the 4-day-long sad excuse of a "ceasefire", Israel started its airstrikes again and 30+ Palestinian civilians have been killed. There are a few things you need to know:
Israel DID NOT stick to the pause, and Israeli snipers continued shooting Palestinians during those past four days.
Israeli tanks surrounded some Palestinian homes in Gaza and people were not allowed to leave. Anyone who tried leaving was shot.
The West Bank is currently being targeted. Israel shot a 9-year-old boy and the surveillance camera footage is everywhere on social media.
People in the West Bank are being killed and forced out of their homes with very little media coverage due to the focus on Gaza.
The Palestinian hostages that were released (including women and children) were subjected to severe abuse. A child left with broken arms and fingers, and another child left with bruises and a torn t-shirt.
The Israeli hostages released highlighted the difference between how they were treated and how Palestinians were treated. Israeli hostages spoke openly about the humane treatment they received.
Some released Israeli hostages even refused to speak to Netanyahu. Do I need to say more?
Released Palestinian women were subjected to threats of rape in Israeli prisons and the threat of the killing of their children.
Palestinian hostages were not offered clean water or proper and enough food.
Released Israeli hostages even revealed that some of the Israeli people that were killed, were killed by Israeli soldiers, not Hamas.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.
Only In England!
The recent case of Andrew Malkinson, who was wrongly imprisoned for 17 years for a crime he did not commit, has highlighted failures within   the criminal justice compensation scheme.
First, the Justice Secretary decides if the individual is entitled to compensation. It is not an automatic right.
“The statutory scheme gives the Justice Secretary discretion to pay compensation to a wrongly convicted person “when his conviction has been reversed or he has been pardoned on the ground that a new or newly discovered fact shows beyond reasonable doubt that there has been a miscarriage of justice”.(commonslibrary: Miscarriage of Justice: compensation schemes)
If the Justice Secretary does decide an applicant is eligible for compensation, an independent assessor decides how much is awarded - up to a maximum of £1million if the applicant has been wrongly imprisoned for more than 10 years
But here is the rub. The assessor:
“…can make deductions for any conduct of the applicant that contributed to the conviction, for his criminal record and for “saved living expenses” .(commonslibrary: Miscarriage of Justice: compensation schemes)
It is the phrase “saved living expenses” that beggars belief, for what it means is that the victim of wrongful imprisonment and a miscarriage of justice is CHARGED for their stay in prison out of their compensation payment!
The " Miscarriage of justice: compensation schemes”            document (06/03/15) clearly states:
“… these deductions may be so great that only a nominal amount of compensation will be payable.”
In other words the State, having wrongly imprisoned someone and having deprived them of their freedom and reputation, then add insult to injury by charging them board and lodging  for their wrongful incarceration.
I only learned about this today, after listening to an interview with Andrew Malkinson, but it has been going on for decades.
“A man freed after spending 11 years in jail for a murder he did not commit has been charged £37,000 for his bed and board while behind bars."  (Independent: 24/05/02)
Wrongly convicted prisoners, the Windrush generation, the Post Office scandal victims, the Grenfell Tower survivors, and Hillsborough disaster victims have all experienced the reluctance of the State to admit liability and pay compensation even after the courts have ruled they are legally entitlesdto compensation.
No wonder Mr Malkinson has decided he no longer wants to live in this country!

future gravity falls au where dipper and pacifica get married really young.
it seems like the last thing either of them would do but they're tired of their relationship not being taken seriously even after dating for years, especially by pacifica's parents, so they run away and get married.
some other ideas i have
dipper proposes after his graduation party. everyone from gravity falls was at the shack to support him and celebrate, and when he and pacifica are alone he pulls out the ring
he apologizes to her for not having a better proposal but pacifica doesn't take much convincing to run away and she cries when she says yes
when the party is over and only their closest friends are left they try to get out as sneakily as possible
they run into soos and dipper gets convinced he has to go to the wedding to be his best man
they run into wendy and she says she has to go and offers to help with the drive there
they run into stan and ford. ford is shocked about it, dipper wants him not to be disappointed but wether or not he is he's doing it anyway. there's probably quite a bit of apprehension about the reasons for it, they'd both be the first to consider maybe it was because of an accidental pregnancy, but once those suspicions are cleared out stan feels very proud of dipper, for taking the step of rebellion, for doing something with bravery, for following stan's parenting in his own way (he was always scared dipper would end up being exactly like ford and one day he'd hate him). he cries but he doesn't let anyone see that, and he convinces ford to let the kids do it so long as they bring them to the wedding.
mabel i'm not so sure about. maybe dipper told her before anyone else, maybe she figured it out on her own, maybe she finds out the day he proposes before everyone else or after everyone else, once she notices the entire house going somewhere in a hurry.
they go to a small chapel, pacifica gets a pretty dress that's sort of white and a veil from a costume, dipper gets an unironed suit that was gathering dust in his closet.
dipper promises to give her a big wedding one day, the best wedding she could ever want, but pacifica knows there will never be one as perfect as this
