My Adventures with Superman Season 2 Easter Eggs

WHAT A FANTASTIC FINALE! HOLY SHIT! I TEARED UP SEVERAL TIMES AND MY GOD WAS THIS SUCH A GOOD FINAL EPISODE FOR SEASON 2!!!! This may be the last Easter Eggs post, episode wise, but we still have the other 4 issues of the comic so come back here each month for that and also at the end I'll give you some recommendations to keep you occupied til season 3 gets a premiere date.

Spoilers if you haven't seen the episode

Starting things off the episode title is My Adventures with Supergirl. An obvious nod to the show title, but also good way to acknowledge the journey we had with Kara whether its seeing her past, what she did under Brainiac's control, and what our trio will do to help Kara be free from Brainiac.

Makes sense that Henshaw is part of the Human Defense Corp (or Squadron in this case) and it looks like the fool dies so maybe Cyborg Superman in the future who know, but I talked about the Human Defense Corp here and Hank Henshaw here.

As Superman and Kara lie on the street thanks to the Metallos and Brainiac's control over them, we see them get saved by the Intergang and Livewire and Heatwave! I talked more about Intergang here and Livewire and Heatwave here and here respectively.

Later in the scene Roughhouse makes a subtle reference to Lobo, but "the Main Man" in this case is referring to General Sam Lane. But if Lobo shows up in a future season, I'll talk more about him, and god I want to see him show up so bad!

Over where Lois, Jimmy, and Steve are, the Metallos chase after them and are saved by Dr. John Henry Irons a.k.a. Steel! I talked more about him here. I'd love to see him wear the helmet like his comic counterpart and the red cape in a future episode.

Later in the episode Superman, Kara, Intergang, Livewire, Heatwave, and Steel attack Brainiac's station and were able to break though his defenses and as they enter Brainiac's chamber, Brainiac activates Kara's brainwashing saying "Eradicator Override"

If you know your Superman comics, the Eradicator was first mentioned in Action Comics Annual #2 (1989) [W: Roger Stern, Jerry Ordway, George Perez, P: Mike Mignola, I: George Perez, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: Bill Oakley] where it was a weapon that was used to kill the Cleric on Krypton who was spreading his message about peace and the unethical uses of cloning on Krypton.

The weapon would later be found by Superman and it caused more problems for him until he threw it away in Antarctica where it created the Fortress of Solitude.

Later during the death of Superman, the Eradicator would emerge as an energy being who takes on the visage of Superman, take Clark's body back to the Fortress so he can heal, and would be one of the four Supermen who took over for Superman at that time. This version of the Eradicator first appeared in Action Comics #687 (1993) [W: Roger Stern, P: Jackson Guice, I: Denis Rodier, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: Bill Oakley]

When we see Kara fight Superman under the control of Brainiac later, she has red eyes just like the Eradicator in the comics as shown here in the panel from Superman #82 (1993) [W&P: Dan Jurgens, I: Brett Breeding, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: John Costanza].

Later in the episode, Clark, Lois, and Jimmy try to calm Kara and help her fight against Brainiac's influence and they succeed (also had me tear up in that moment too) and shout out Kara's Canary Cry! Black Canary would be proud AF!

After pushing back on Brainiac's station Clark and Kara battle Brainiac in space and Brainiac monologues about Krypton's destruction and his excuse of existing. He activates the weapon that destroyed Krypton, the Black Zero Protocol.

The first and only known version of Black Zero that destroyed Krypton was in Superman #205 (1968) [W: Otto Binder, P&I: Al Plastino] where the saboteur was hired to destroy Krypton by accelerating the internal planetary stresses that caused the planet to explode. He was planning on doing the same to the Earth before Superman stopped him. Other iterations and uses of the Black Zero name include, a Kryptonian Terrorist Group that created a computer virus of the same name that infected the Fortress of Solitude, a clone of Conner Kent, and a Kryptonian military group.

After Kara took the hit and plunged into the sun, she and Clark are saved thanks to their Kryptonian physiology because they get their powers from the Sun. You notice their Kryptonite scarring/veins glow a gold color bringing to mind...

Superman Prime One Million from DC Million #4 (1998) [P: Val Semekis, I: Prentis Rollins, C: Pat Garrahy & Heroic Age] who is OG Superman after outliving all his family and friends traveled throughout the DC universe and absorbing the Sun's radiant energy for like hundreds of years where his powers are now near infinite levels giving him this gold look. This version of Superman according to Grant Morrison is the same as the one in All-Star Superman.

In a Kryptonian religious sense, you could argue that Rao, the sun god of the Kryptonians, saved his last two people from death and giving them power to fight against Brainiac.

The MAwS crew really love their DBZ cuz the sun aura Clark and Kara give off is the same vibe as what Super Saiyans have when they power up.

We then see Kara and Clark glow a red and blue aura respectively which, I might be reading into it a lot, could be symbolic of Nightwing and Flamebird, the Kryptonian gods/heroes/dragons and the identities that Clark and Kara took up at one point in the comics with Clark taking up the Nightwing name and Kara taking up the Flamebird name. Also maybe its Superman Blue and Superman Red sorta deal who knows. It was cool though.

By the end of the episode we see people tuning to the aftermath of what happened and we see Channel 52 on display. I talked more about that here.

We then see Lex and Slade looking up on the LexCorp building. I talked more about LexCorp here but its first appearance in the comics is in The Man of Steel #2 (1986) [W&P: John Byrne, I: Dick Giordano, C: Tom Zuiko, L: John Costanza] as shown below:

and finally we close out the episode with Clark and Kara going to stop the fire at Perez Plaza, named after legendary artist George Perez.

George Perez is well known for his Wonder Woman run and being the co-creator of the Teen Titans in the 80s with Marv Wolfman. He helped design Lex Luthor's iconic battle suit (I really hope to see it in MAwS someday). Perez also had a run on the Superman comics too. He worked on Action Comics for a short while as penciler and did some breakdown work on the title. He also wrote and inked on the Adventure of Superman comics. Perez wrote, did the layouts, and drew the cover art for the 2011 Superman run. If you love the Teen Titans/Titans, like me, you gotta give thanks to this man.

DC in 2022 did a really awesome tribute to him by collaborating with other DC artists to show how much of an impact his career was on the DC universe give both images a look cuz its beautiful and you can see which artist did which character. In the mean time when we get a date for season 3 I highly recommend reading the My Adventures with Superman comics, read The Man of Steel (1986) limited series because a lot of pop culture's understanding of the Superman mythos and characters comes from that limited series, read the Death of Superman, A World Without Superman, and Reign of the Supermen because you will see how much of an impact Superman made defending Metropolis from Doomsday, his death affecting everyone he met, and his glorious return. Also give the DC Rebirth era of Superman comics a shot too because you get to see Lois and Clark raise a son. The DC Infinite Frontier Superman run that came after the Rebirth era is just as good that I highly recommend reading too. Out of continuity wise definitely check out Superman: Secret Identity, All-Star Superman, Kingdom Come, the current World's Finest run, and Superman vs the Amazing Spider-Man.

In terms of watching highly recommend watching Superman the Animated Series because that series is equally good to MAwS and it helped build out the DCAU which I also highly recommend everyone to dive into. Shin Ultraman (and hell basically all of the Ultraman media) because like Superman its an alien who defends the Earth, hides amongst the population and actually thinks human beings can live up to their potential. Tsuburaya's Ultraman and Superman would be damn good friends. If you need some goofy fun, the Super Friends is a fun watch if you need light hearted cartoons.

Helena Bertinelli/Huntress Reading List/Completionist Guide

Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress of Prime Earth. She has existed as a character since 1989, and has appeared in her own series as well as multiple other series throughout the years. Most well known for being a Bird of Prey, she has a long history that tends to be hard to track. Instead of hunting down all of the issues, this guide has every one of her appearances in the attempt to follow her chronologically, but where her movements couldn’t be followed the natural passing of time was used to follow the story. 

This is both a reading list and a completionist guide. This means there will be times when the issue only has a cameo of Helena. For a casual reader this list may be a little much. If that is the case click [here] for a shorter list that can get you started on Helena.

Superman #20 - Rest in pieces Rudy. God I love Mora's art, I haven't been this excited by a freaking Doomsday story since the first time I read Death of Superman. Give me all the blood and guts, Doomsday amplified by the power of Hell rules. He's like a freaking Balrog now! Never realized it before but Doomsday is basically Evil Goku under Williamson and it rocks. He loves fighting and killing, and all he wants is to get stronger. Even old man Doomsday as the Time Trapper is seeking to use his biology to evolve and grow more powerful, like how Saiyans do when they’re badly damaged. I loved the conversation between Time Trapper and Superman at the start too, where Doomsday waxes on about how the two of them are eternal and destined for conflict forever.

I love that kind of anime monologue between two foes. I hate it when it’s like Doomsday Clock, where it’s a bunch of meaningless wank about how Superman “matters” to the structure of the multiverse. Here it works for me because it’s Trapper inflated ego mandating that he has to cast Superman as some primal force in order to cope with how he keeps losing to the guy. He wants to become a god, clearly he isn’t lacking pride, and it would be unbearable for him to keep losing to “a regular guy”. Bringing in Golden God Superman from One Million also does justify it somewhat since that Superman basically is a god himself. I can buy that a Time Trapper who has been feuding with Superman-Prime, and having witnessed his power, views Superman with respect. Lot of mysteries set up in this issue: what is Superman's "red levels"? Zod is going to take Superman's eye at some point?!? God I hope the rumor of Williamson leaving isn't true, the man is in the zone right now on Superman.

Absolute Wonder Woman #2 - So good. My favorite page is the one where Sherman makes the panel where Diana dresses down the commander into a W, and then you get Diana and Steve talking to her Pegasus. Great composition with the art and Thompson shows us the two sides of her Diana in one page: the stern warrior and the compassionate hero. I was not expecting Absolute Steve to be a relatively straightforward take, I almost figured he would turn out to be dead, and serve as Diana's "Virgil" guide in Man's World. With mainline Steve dead currently I hope to see Thompson make use of Absolute Steve, I know it's awkward for WW of all franchises to devote time to fleshing out a man, but as her premiere LI I believe he needs it. Also I guess Absolute Diana is bi? Thompson said she views her Diana as queer but unless I'm misreading, there's definitely some attraction between Diana and Steve.

Another thing this issue I liked: we get a sense of how Diana's past informs her fight with the present. Batman lost his father in a mass shooting and the Party Animals are a chance for him to strike back against that. Superman lost his parents and his planet because of the greed and cruelty of the ruling class, which he gets the chance to fight against on Earth in the form of the Lazarus Corp. With Wondy it's made clear that the monsters of hell were a source of torment for her and Circe, and that's why Thompson starts off this first arc with Diana fighting monsters. Diana gets to finally push back against foes similar to her past tormentors. I will add this criticism however: if it’s just faceless monsters without a known Wondy villain pulling their strings, then I think that’s a mistake. While I like what the monsters represent on the whole conceptually, they’re not grabbing me as actual characters.

JLU #1 - This was ok. I guess I’m interested to see where evil Air Wave is going. What it isn’t however is exciting. Waid is turning in a perfectly serviceable DCAU knockoff comic, but what I’m not getting is any sense of real ambition here. It’s safe, and it suffers from being safe while Williamson is letting Mora cut loose and the Absolute books are taking way more risks. Williamson and Waid are doing the exact same thing, mixing in DCAU and Silver Age concepts while modernizing them at the same time - but Williamson is doing it better. Hurts Waid even further that both of them are paired with Mora, and Mora’s work in Superman is on another level compared to JLU. I don’t think Waid was the right choice to relaunch JL, this is giving me flashbacks to how Marvel benched the F4 for a while, and when they finally made their big return it happened in a mediocre run that’s already forgotten. Got a feeling JLU will be received similarly.

Incredible Hulk #19 - Took a long time to get here, but I actually enjoyed the climax to the Eldest arc! Klein’s art made all the body horror come off as beautifully Gothic, and I’m intrigued to see what Charlie’s newfound powers mean for her and Bruce.

Laws are made either by authoritarian dictates or democratic consensus. If anybody tells you that the only legitimate law maker is God, they are suffering from some mental disorder, like covert narcissistic personality disorder. Most dictators will tell you they know what is best for everyone. Do they? Fuck no, they don’t! Like for many people, their egos lie to them.

Nowadays, you hear the phrase, “strong man.” Being insensitive is the zenith of manhood. Being authoritarian will get things done. Those who are intransigent to that fallacy always find out, sooner or later, that the emperor has no clothes. That’s right! Americans found out that Donald Trump, who was president of the U.S. for four years, was not a macho man, but a pussy! I might remind you that God would never send an obnoxious asshole to earth to redeem the sins of man. If so, he would have sent Don Rickles instead of Jesus to save humanity.

Most Americans have fantasies of a superhero saving the world. Trump is so fat that he could never get into a Superman outfit! I’ve got sad news for you: no hero or God is going to save you. The only thing that can save the world is solidarity of its people. No matter what that hag, Ayn Rand said, humans helping humans is a virtue. Attempting to help yourself while you are having a heart attack is not noble, but outright stupid. Get some help! Call 911, knucklehead! 

When I was 13 years old, that was an age of discovery for me. I was introduced to all sorts of new things I’d never conceived. Everything was exciting and challenging. I was never judged by a prime minister who was worried that I would join the Communist Party. What do I mean? Imagine, at 13, you were killed by an Israeli soldier because the Likud Party saw you as a rodent that must be exterminated. You were only 13 years old! You were killed because of the fears of a superstitious nationalist! Were you later proven to be a potential terrorist who would join Hamas?  There was no evidence to support that! Or, BAM! A building falls on your head. It’s all over for you! Is it righteous to kill anyone in your way for the reason of self-defense? That’s not being strong. That is being an obnoxious bully! What about shooting a gun, or punching someone in the mouth? No, no, a million times no! You want to know what being strong is? During the Civil Rights movement of the 60’s, non-violent protestors were instructed not to physically resist. Even if a cop was beating you with a Billy club, you were to let the blood flow. Are you strong enough to do that? Only cowards use guns and other weapons.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is going to end up like the Afrikaner president F.W. de Klerk, a disgraced leader who is now forgotten. South Africa was Israel’s biggest ally. They learned about Apartheid from White South Africans. Never befriend a devil or you will burn like him in hell!

Is it all right to kill someone because God told you to do it? Is that moral? First, no one has established the fact that God exists. Did God give you a permission notice? Why would God do that anyway, since he is, allegedly, the all-powerful being in the universe? What?! God is testing your loyalty to him? I thought God could read your mind. I don’t know if God is allowed to kill, but murder is grand theft. Wasn’t it God who said, “Thou shalt not steal”? What Israel is doing to the people of Gaza is immoral!

Funny, you never see the word, “moral” in the Bible. As far as the etymonline of the word “moral” goes, it didn’t appear until 1752 in France. So, there is no such thing as morality in the Bible.

In the final analysis, Netanyahu can reference the Bible all he wants, but what he is doing is illegal and evil.

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (2023) - A local carpenter and weed dealer who transitioned into bit-part acting in the 60s, Harrison Ford is now 80 years old, and still somehow unretired. Indiana Jones, meanwhile, is supposed to be about seventy. The equivalent would be if Indy's father, Sean Connery, was still playing James Bond in 2010. I'd say that Ford (and by extension all Boomers and above) should step aside and let someone like Chris Pine, Ryan Gosling or James Marsden make a movie like this, but we'd probably get Chris Pratt, Jared Leto, or Shia LeBoeuf instead, so I'll just have to let it slide. This time.

With a $294.7 million budget (Raiders of the Lost Ark cost 20 million in 1980), a large amount of CGI has been employed, along with green screen, stunt doubling, deepfaking, de-aging, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, to make it seem like Harrison Ford is still a viable action hero. To be clear, he absolutely is too old for this, and it is absolutely a bad idea to make this movie. The $185 million "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was an equally bad idea back in 2008, and it has somehow been 15 years since then.

I don't know if it's elder abuse or simply audience abuse to keep making these, but in both cases, an aging Harrison Ford is more engaged and interested in this role onscreen than he is in just about any other. 1982's Blade Runner gave us Harrison Ford in his prime, sleepwalking, disinterested and sullen. Now in 2023, Ford is visibly too old to be doing this CGI superhero bullshit, in a sequel that is forty years too little and too late, but he's committed to the role enough that he just about gets it to work. After a tepic reception at Cannes, the film is getting very good reviews and buzz, so I'll be the one to break from the pack and say that it doesn't work for me. Oh, no one involved embarrasses him or herself. Under the circumstances, it's a miracle that the movie is as good as it is. It's a bad idea that just about justifies its own existence.

A small caveat here: There may have been something wrong with the sound setup at the theater where I saw this. I couldn't understand a word being said for large chunks of the runtime, starting with a chaotic sequence in Morocco. But I don't think I actually missed anything. Maybe the sound mixing is just like that, Chris Nolan style. The opening sequence, with a younger Ford de-aged via CGI, was very dark and murky visually. In Imax, I could see the pixels on the screen, especially the bright white on black titles.

But I think the key problem for me is that I guess I don't like James Mangold as the director for this sort of thing. I haven't seen his full filmography, and he's clearly well regarded. But I have seen his dreary films about an aging Wolverine. 2013's "The Wolverine" sees the Hugh Jackman X-Men character travel to Japan and murder every single person he meets with his adamantium claws. At one point the female sidekick is mulching guys into paste with a snowplow. In 2017's Logan, he's older and unhappy about the situation, as he gets into danger with a child. These were, for me, examples of taking a superhero film way too seriously, as if gunning for the Oscar with a script that doesn't stand up to thinking about it for more than a minute or so. You wouldn't see a movie about Superman murdering a few thousand Japanese guys, because it's not a fair fight. "The Wolverine" (2013) wounds Logan just enough that he can plausibly act like the underdog, but he's a more-or-less immortal killing machine with knives coming out of his wrists.

It's hard to make a good film, and these films are polished, stylish, action-packed and memorable in many ways. But they also leave a bad taste in my mouth, comparable to the work of Zack Snyder. There's a lack of humanity to them. I could have predicted that in this Indiana Jones movie, Indy would constantly be murdering people, and that people would constantly be getting into accidents that kill them in horrific implied ways, and that the bad guys would kill any notable character that the plot isn't relying on.

That is what you get here, and admittedly it gives the film a certain energy. You don't get the sense that this is the cleaned-up Disney version of Indiana Jones, where everything is censored. You feel the danger. But it also forces me to be the party pooper and point out that this film lacks the magic that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas brought to the property. Steven Spielberg is hard to replace. He is the most famous and beloved film director of our time, and he has always brought an aura of wonder to the screen that other filmmakers can't really imitate … with only occasional exceptions like the uncanny valley animated "Tintin" film.

It's unfair to expect James Mangold to fully replace Spielberg, and under the circumstances I'm not surprised they went with a director who presumably considers his work to be Very Important Cinema. Mangold manages to deliver lots of action, and make it feel like "an Indiana Jones movie," when forty years later it probably shouldn't. But it's just not the same, for a lot of reasons.

Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) is an extremely tight two hours which works like clockwork. There's a lot of wit and character to it, but it's that precision filmmaking which makes many people call it "a perfect film." It doesn't slow down very often. It's always doing something interesting visually, and always moving forward. Every Indiana Jones film ever since has tried to recapture that.

We have a problem here, which is that an eighty (or seventy) year old Indiana Jones is more of a character role, who we could expect to talk about what he's learned over the years. And an Indiana Jones movie cannot slow down for something like that, even for a second. Or at least this movie can't. The script is also not funny enough to lend much character to the proceedings, so we don't get much sense of who these people are as they're speeding around on green screens at a hundred miles per hour. The end product is chaotic, often to the point of incoherence. Everyone is almost always moving at great speed, for reasons which aren't always adequately set up. To repeat, they're moving at great speed whether or not there is a good reason for them to be doing so. They are often on green screen, or visibly stunt doubled, and one of them is eighty years old.

There's also a lot of fighting on the tops of trains and from moving vehicles. Why do the bad guys take a wounded Indy along with them as they enact their entire plan? As far as I can tell, no reason is given, except that it's a movie and Indiana Jones needs to be there for it. Helena also manages to board the plane while it's in flight, and Teddy manages to get another plane going, for the reason that these are the characters who are in the film, and they need to be there for the end of it.

The script contradicts itself constantly, and feels like bits of different drafts were combined with one another randomly. Why is Indiana Jones teaching in July, preparing his students for mid-terms or finals, then also retiring in July on the same day? Why is he coincidentally teaching his disinterested class about the same subject that the film is about, when it's a touchy subject which secretly tore entire families apart in the film's backstory? Why do we keep meeting his close friends, that he's apparently spent decades with, for about two lines of dialogue before they get shot?

The result lacks character. As with the Crystal Skull film, stunt casting is used in place of giving us scenes that show who these characters are. I can believe that Antonio Banderas is a salty old scuba diver who has had many good times with Indiana Jones over the years. I can believe that because he's Antonio Banderas, but the film expects that to be enough for us, and gives him very little of interest to do. And Toby Jones' character, an academic who's not cut out for being an action hero, would be very uninteresting if it wasn't played by a character actor like Toby Jones. (Crystal Skull pulled similar shenanigans with Jim Broadbent, John Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Cate Blanchett.)

John Rhys-Davies shows up briefly as the returning character of Sallah, looking every day of his 79 years of age. I expect they wanted to keep any action with Rhys-Davies to a minimum, so we find him appearing in the movie for no real reason, except that this is an Indiana Jones movie and therefore he ought to be in it. I agree with that, but bringing these characters back one last time has an eerie David Lynch quality about it.

Mads Mikkelsen plays the memorable (if very standard) villain, a semi-retired Nazi called Dr. Voller. It's ideal casting, although it raises questions to have the 57-year-old actor playing the part in both 1944 and 1969. He is noticeably de-aged in the 1944 scenes, with a few less lines and wrinkles, but Harrison Ford manages to age 35 years in the same time (ten more than he ought to). A whole lot of CGI is used to give Indiana Jones one more adventure in 1944, and it's technically impressive, if still a bit noticeable and distracting. Toward the end of the sequence, a little too much of it takes place in the dark - not to hide the quality of the CGI but because movies tend to be too dark now.

Boyd Holbrook is memorable as a trigger-happy American who gives off Neo-Nazi vibes which aren't deeply explored. Ethann Isidore plays the sidekick, a thieving street rat kid called Teddy. Shaunette Renee Wilson plays a CIA agent, I think. Olivier Richters plays the guy who is 7 foot two. You know, I'm not sure that an 80 year old Indy and a 16 year old Teddy are really a match for this guy.

It is getting into spoiler territory to say that Karen Allen appears as Marion, although that won't surprise anyone either. It is definitely getting into spoiler territory to say what became of their relationship after the Crystal Skull film, and these are some of the only moments in the film where Harrison Ford really gets to act and lay out his character's backstory. I wish we'd gotten more of this. I've seen complaints about this storyline, saying it robs the character of a lot of his charm, and is too similar to plotlines in the Star Wars sequels, and the Blade Runner sequel. I can see that, but when sequels come this late, they really have to be about regret, and this storyline works better than anything else in the film. Although I couldn't help but think that this elderly couple began - in Raiders - with Marion punching her former Professor, who had clearly had an inappropriate relationship with her when she was a minor. The 30s were a different time, and so were the 80s. Marion's role is also very small here. It is crucial that she be present, but the film is not interested in exploring her character any more deeply than that.

We don't get Ke Huy Quan's Short Round, as his career only picked up this past year with a memorable role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. It's easy to imagine the character showing up in either Crystal Skull or this film as one of the leads, rather than these new characters, but that wasn't something they considered writing for the slightly embarrassing kid sidekick from "Temple of Doom." And speaking of embarrassing …

The "Crystal Skull" character of Mutt, played by Shia LeBoeuf, was covered in the press at the time as a character who could replace Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones films, played by an up and coming young actor whose career was given a huge boost by the Spielberg seal of approval here, leading to the equally annoying character of Sam Witwicky in the Michael Bay Transformers films (the first in 2007). And yes, in the actual film, Shia LeBoeuf is deeply uncool and mostly just a nuisance.

Pretty much every male nerd of a certain age wanted, and still wants, to be "cool" like Indiana Jones. Any internet reviewer, of the Angry Video Game Nerd variety, will put on a complete Indiana Jones cosplay for their review of this film, as they did with Crystal Skull, and they'll think they're being slick with it. The leather jacket, the shirt, the hat, the whip. All clothing items that they already, apparently, had. Nobody wanted to be Shia LeBoeuf's Mutt Williams. He's got a 50s greaser look which doesn't suit him, making him look less like Marlon Brando than like Michael Cera's Wally Brando, from Twin Peaks. Indeed Cera might have been better in the role. Shia is a very reactive actor, and could theoretically have pulled off a Michael J. Fox type role which required that. But planting the idea that he could replace Indiana Jones nearly ruined his career here, because he very clearly doesn't have the necessary swagger. The movie itself even confirms this. In the end, Mutt picks up Indy's trademark hat, and Indy grabs it right back from him. This can be seen as a metaphor for how this series has gone, and also for how the Boomer generation, and older folks who came of age in the 60s and 70s, have refused to retire and let the younger generation take over for them.

Okay, so maybe Shia LeBoeuf was never going to replace Indiana Jones, a character originally offered to the hairy-chested Tom Selleck. But perhaps another actor could have. Harrison Ford seems iconic and irreplaceable now, but in the 70s he was a weed dealer and carpenter who did bit parts on the side. While it's fun to see Indiana Jones come back one last time, it's also a metaphor for Hollywood leaning back on successes from over four decades ago, and refusing to create anything truly new. Shia was set up to fail, because he looks and acts young in a movie that sees his youth as embarrassing. It didn't actually give us a "new Indiana Jones type," and Dial of Destiny doesn't either.

Shia LeBoeuf eventually left the Transformers franchise. We're told that he was killed off between films. And then there were the allegations, as his behavior, according to the newspapers, became ever stranger and more erratic. "FKA twigs Sues Shia LaBeouf, Citing ‘Relentless’ Abusive Relationship. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles by the musician, accuses the actor of sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress."

Shia LeBoeuf does not appear in this film.

I have not yet mentioned the rest of the plot, which involves the Greek mathematician Archimedes and is stupid. At one point there is a dull scuba-diving sequence where Indy is attacked by equally dull CGI eels. At another point we get the welcome return of the red line on a map which marks which country Indiana Jones is going to next.

There's also the matter of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who wrote and starred in Fleabag on the stage in 2013, and on television in 2016 and 2019. Her character is equal parts charismatic and off-putting, attractive and reprehensible. (Phoebe also appeared in "Broadchurch," contributed to "James Bond 007: No Time to Die" and created Crashing and Killing Eve.) Despite a strong outing in Fleabag, it took Lucasfilm some time to do anything interesting with her. Her voice role as feminist android L3-37 in "Solo: A Star Wars Story" (2018) is baffling. It may have made more sense before rewrites and reshoots replaced directors Lord & Miller with Ron Howard. But it also runs afoul of a recurring problem in Star Wars, which is that droids seem to be fully developed, intelligent, sentient beings, who are never treated as if they're deserving of human rights. Star Wars never deals with this in any meaningful way, and it's an exposed electrical wire that they often get tripped up on, especially in animated television shows like The Clone Wars.

Anyway, I think this movie, the Dial of Destiny, has a problem with women. There are a lot of characters in this movie that aren't deeply explored or explained, but none of them quite like Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Unless I missed something during all the dialogue I couldn't understand, this doesn't feel like an actual consistent character. It feels like several very different characters from several very different drafts of several very different movies, all stapled together more or less randomly.

The performance is fine - Phoebe Waller-Bridge is charismatic and delivers every line with a wink and a twinkle. Her character is also just deeply insane, and her motivations never make sense. She is also, I think, playing an entirely different character by the end of the film, who is a more traditional hero, and expecting us to believe that she's been playing that character the entire time. As with her character in Solo, this should probably be funny, but isn't, because it's not written to be funny or make very much sense. Helena is, depending on the scene, the puppetmaster in charge of the entire adventure, or coming along reluctantly and making it up as she goes. She is also, depending on the scene, only in it for the money, or very deeply invested in this academic mystery and adventure. She is ready to sell off the Dial of Destiny to pay off gambling debts, because it's either the most meaningful thing in the world to her, or not meaningful at all. Sometimes she's a straightforward hero, or sidekick to the hero. She is also just deeply insane and often untrustworthy, going goblin mode in a way that may have been funny or interesting in a different draft of this script.

It is likely, considering her repeated lines that she's "in it for the money," that they intended Helena to be similar to Harrison Ford as Han Solo. But I think this movie has a problem with women, and failed to write her as a complete person with motivations that make sense. There is one scene in Greece where, to test how a location echoes, Helena starts shout-singing Beethoven's Fifth. Phoebe plays this a little bit wacky, so this feels like the setup for some comedic banter, probably with Indy being annoyed by this. But he just goes along with it and does the same. Helena Shaw is an eccentric performance in search of a better script which would actually explain what she's doing, or make it funnier.

The character clearly has a sense of humor, and is carrying a lot of trauma, and has a lot going on in her backstory, and none of it matters. This could have been a journey where her character changes over the course of the adventure, and maybe they think that's what they accomplished here. It feels more, to me, like this is four different characters held together by one performance.

The character we get as a result is acceptable, and at least she doesn't have the weight of having to possibly replace Indiana Jones, which made Mutt Williams so worrying. But it's also a character delivered with a wink to the audience, and another wink to Indiana Jones himself, as if this is all one grand joke that we're all in on. At no point was I in on this joke, so that didn't work for me. Throughout the film she does things that could easily cause the death of the very elderly Indiana Jones, as well as herself, and it just never matters because this script was rewritten a thousand times and has inconsistent internal logic.

Early scenes in the film set Indy up as a man out of time in a changing world, an interesting character note which is largely forgotten once he puts that hat back on, something he only does because it's an Indiana Jones movie and that's what Indiana Jones wears. For all of the film's chaotic, frenetic action, it's at its best when it's about an old man complaining about his life. There's a brief scene where Indy complains to Helena about the state of his body, and this angle really is curiously underexplored in The Dial of Destiny. At 80 years old, Harrison Ford is not a young action hero. This has become, whether Lucasfilm likes it or not, a character actor part. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is also performing Helena as more of a character-actor part. So I think this could have been a better movie than it is if they stopped pretending that this is an Indiana Jones movie and let it go completely off the rails and become a disaster. Like when a Sam Raimi or David Lynch film loses interest in what it's supposed to be doing, and pursues something more nonsensical for awhile. I think that would be better than what we got. I don't think the Dial of Destiny is bad, but I question all of the cultural decisions that led it to be made in the first place.

Does Indiana Jones, even at eighty, deserve one last hurrah? Sure, but we all deserve one last hurrah and we don't usually get them. If you wanted to make this movie, the time to do so was in the 1980s, or 90s if Ford was interested then.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came out in 1989. (Remember "It belongs in a museum!" "So do you!") It was intended as the last hurrah for an aging Indiana Jones, and we've now gotten three of those, which is more than the two movies that preceded it, both of which purport to be Indiana Jones' first adventure. If you take into account the Young Indiana Jones TV series, all of Indiana Jones' live action adventures are either his first ever adventure, or his last ever adventure. Sometimes they're both - Last Crusade has a Young Indiana Jones segment (the weakest part of the film), Dial of Destiny has a Relatively Young Indiana Jones segment, and The Young Indiana Jones has Indy as a one-eyed old man. Or at least it did; George Lucas has cut those scenes from re-releases. At least we get one episode in season 5 where a bearded 1993 Harrison Ford plays the saxophone.

That wasn't what we wanted either; we wanted Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis in 1993. The Indiana Jones film series was based on older adventure movies whose influence is, I think, nowhere to be found in the new film. Those films were probably familiar to audiences in 1981 but unfamiliar to even the filmmakers in 2023. Enough time has passed that many other series trying to recapture the Indiana Jones formula have come and gone. We've had The Mummy series. We've had multiple Lara Croft Tomb Raiders. We've had multiple Scrooge McDucks. Everyone is trying to capture that sense of old-fashioned adventure with a little comedy, and they're usually better at the comedy than Dial of Destiny is.

Full disclosure: I don't think Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull is as bad as its reputation, or at least I didn't when I saw it in theaters in 2008. I've not bothered with it since. As I recall, I was invited to see it in Los Angeles, with a friend from high school and his friend group. We couldn't all get tickets together, so I was separated. I was in either another row, or in another theater entirely. After the show, they greeted me with sarcastic feigned enthusiasm, saying "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull rocks!" and high-fiving me. I hadn't especially liked the film either, but soon realized that I'd made a complete fool of myself, in their eyes, by having any opinion about it more complicated than "wow, that was complete garbage."

Folks, Harrison Ford was 66 years old at the time. It was two decades late to be as good as "The Last Crusade." Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had both gone to some weird places in their careers, and George's contribution was always going to include some peculiar story beats and very obvious CGI. It was about aliens.

The writers included David Koepp, who as far as I could tell is a terrible writer who was often paid a lot of money to write films that turned out very good in spite of him. David Koepp was also a writer of The Dial of Destiny. It's hard to tell, from a finished film, whether the actual screenplay was well written or not. People in Hollywood know this - that a bad movie can come from a good script, and that sometimes they know enough to judge a writer for that script rather than that film. David Koepp is credited for writing films that I like, so I might wonder why I was so convinced he's not a good writer. But those movies were mostly based on strong IP which did a lot of the work for him. It felt like Panic Room and War of the Worlds (2005) succeeded in spite of their screenplays. And what about the Johnny Depp thriller Secret Window (2004)? Show me what he can do without Steven Spielberg to clean up his messes.

Anyway, my expectations were not that high for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. I wasn't expecting something as good as Raiders or Last Crusade. I was expecting an elderly Harrison Ford, with a pretty bad script, and pretty obvious CGI, that would be trying to look like a vintage adventure visually but be easily dated to 2008 throughout. Dated before it was even released. I expected some distracting casting, of recognizable famous faces. I expected that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas would both be so successful now, and so deeply into their own individual eccentricities, that they wouldn't have been able to agree on what this movie should actually be, and that it would show.

I think it was a bad idea to have made that movie. I expected, more or less, what we got. And Steven Spielberg happens to be a great director who gave us, under these unusual circumstances, some of that Spielberg magic.

That magic is not present in The Dial of Destiny. As a movie, The Dial of Destiny is reasonably well made. It's action-packed. There is some obvious CGI, but it's trying to do things which are very difficult and expensive to do, like de-aging Harrison Ford or a cartoonish parade for the Apollo 11 astronauts.

Dial of Destiny is an okay movie. A lot of people are saying it's better than The Crystal Skull. I don't think The Crystal Skull is as bad as people are saying, and I don't think Dial of Destiny is as good as people are saying. I don't think either are fully successful in what they're trying to do. Indiana Jones really was too old for this, and Hollywood could have let some writer come up with a new idea instead.

I think it was a bad idea to have made both of these movies. I'm not sorry I watched them, because I'm old enough to be nostalgic for the property, but I also think they're trying to recapture something which they would have struggled to recapture forty years ago. I think, under the circumstances, both movies are pretty good and have some pretty good stuff in them.

I am also begging, begging, begging Hollywood to stop making movies like this.

These sequels that come twenty, thirty, forty years late. We watch them because they're familiar, but we don't need Indiana Jones, we need the next thing that could be as big as Indiana Jones. There won't be a sequel to the Dial of Destiny forty years from now, with a 120 year old Harrison Ford. Or maybe there will, because Hollywood wants to keep repeating itself. And we'll all be dead or dying from climate change by then, so what does it even matter?

Is It Really That Bad?

So it’s the mid 80s, and you’re tasked with one of the most exciting things imaginable: Turning a Marvel comic into a movie. Now, this is significant because this will be the first feature film based on a Marvel property; there were some TV films before in the 70s and 80s for Hulk, Captain America, and Dr. Strange, but this was going to be on the silver screen! Which famous character should be brought in for Marvel’s big debut? I mean, DC already killed it with West’s Batman and Reeves’ Superman, so Marvel should put their best foot forward! Should we have Spider-Man? The Mighty Thor? Perhaps the Fantastic Four, the first family of Marvel?

Nah, let’s do Howard the fucking Duck.

Adapting a character who was relatively obscure went over about as well as you might imagine with audiences back in 1986. After seven months of production and millions of dollars, the film bombed hard and left a lot of lives in shambles. The director of the movie Willard Huyck and the head of Universal Frank Price both ended up losing in this, as did George Lucas (contrary to what you might believe, he wasn’t the director), who ended up having to sell off Pixar to Steve Jobs to pay off Skywalker Ranch and divorce settlements, things he hoped this movie would have paid for. Frankly, Lucas was a scapegoat for Universal, who pushed his involvement despite his desire to not overshadow his friends working on the movie; Huyck had worked with Lucas on American Graffiti, Temple of Doom, and A New Hope, so he clearly liked the guy, but I guess the suits wanted some of that Star Wars money by slapping the name on. Price also really wanted to make the film similar in tone to Ghostbusters, which didn’t help matters at all.

Pretty much the only person who worked on it and doesn’t hate it is Lea Thompson, who played Howard’s girlfriend Beverly. She has been surprisingly positive about the film and owns her role in it, apparently even offering to to direct a new adaptation for Marvel Studios and lending her likeness to the comics so she could appear as herself beside her one-time fictional boytoy. You go, girl!

Ah, but perhaps the saddest victim of this film’s reception was Howard himself. Between this movie and Disney complaining he looked too similar to Donald, Steve Gerber’s wacky duck man was pushed out of the limelight for a long, long time. It wasn’t until 2009 when Bob Iger ordered the purchase of Marvel that Howard was able to start coming back, a return solidified by his awesome post-credit cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, which got him a new series and cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Endgame (where he appears for split second in the big portal scene, coming out with the Ravagers and toting a big fucking gun).

But now that we have dozens of other Marvel films under our belt, let’s take a look back at Howard’s sole cinematic solo outing. Was his big break judged too harshly by audiences of the 80s, or is the movie, much like Howard himself, quite fowl? Well, after giving it a rewatch, I’m here to tell you if Howard the Duck is really that bad.

THE GOOD

What this film lacks in… well, just about everything, it makes up for with sheer cheesy 80s charm.

Like, look at Howard himself. The suit is bad, the puppet is bad, the fact they tried using both leading to his appearance changing wildly between shots is even worse… But it’s not so bad that it’s unbearable. Like a crummy practical effect like this undeniably has charm, and it’s helped a lot by Howard’s cute, dorky voice. Would it have been better if Robin Williams had stayed on to voice Howard? Undoubtedly. Were we robbed because a young Jason Alexander was turned away after auditioning? Absolutely, and I cry every night that we lost out on this. But Howard just has a prime 80s everyman corniness to him that makes him a likable duck even if the effects don’t really convey him as well as they could.

Then of course there’s Lea Thompson, and you can see why she’s so unashamed of this film, because she is busting her ass for this film. She will make you believe that she finds a weird alien duck sexually appealing. Like I really don’t have much more to add here, she managed to pull that off, she deserved a better career. End of discussion.

Now, unfortunately, I must praise Jeffery Jones. Here he plays a scientist who gets possessed by the creatively-named Dark Overlord, and he really gets to ham it up in what feels like a prototype of Edgar the Bug. Despite the awful prosthetic work and the Saturday morning cartoon supervillain voice he uses, it ends up being moderately entertaining… and I hate saying that because Jones is an actual, literal sicko in real life. Let’s just say those scenes in Ferris Bueller where he is snooping about a teen boy’s house and leering in the windows hoping to see him is a bit more accurate to his life than you’d hope. It’s a shame, because he’s a solid actor, but it’s hard to praise him too much when he did what he did.

The Dark Overlord itself is also a pretty impressively-designed stop motion monstrosity, and its scenes in the finale are pretty awesome, only hampered by some really bad compositing. You can definitely tell where the budget went.

And then we have the song played at the end, a ridiculously cheesy slice of 80s pop cooked up by Thomas Dolby, the man behind the legendary one-hit wonder “She Blinded Me With Science.” Needless to say, Howard’s little song at the end is every bit as infectiously earwormy as that.

THE BAD

I think what really kills the film is just how weak the third act is. The film was at its best when it was about Howard being put into awkward situations, like being forced to work a shitty job or starting a bar fight. But I guess that doesn’t get asses in seats, so they have a third act where Howard has to save the world from destruction by evil aliens by stopping a gigantic sky laser. Considering how that very plot has become a widely-mocked cliché in the wake of movies trying to copy this very thing from The Avengers, Howard was truly ahead of its time in terms of comic book adaptations.

Even in the good parts of the first two acts there’s some weakness. The conceit of the character is that he’s an alien duck forced into the mundane situations the real world provides, and while we do get some of that, a lot of stuff is abandoned a bit too quickly for my liking. Sure, we didn’t need a montage of Howard applying for a bunch of crummy jobs, and I suppose we didn’t need to see him manage the band excessively or anything, but too much of what makes this movie charming in its weird and awkward way is thrown out for some souped up climax where Howard flies a little plane contraption with Tim Robbins and then fights an alien monster. It feels like a bunch of half baked plots haphazardly slapped together more than a cohesive narrative the writers gave a shit about.

On top of that, the film feels remarkably cheap. The suit and puppet thing is bad, the compositing of the Dark Overlord is bad, it genuinely blows the mind that these effects were this mediocre when the movie was relatively expensive to make. I have to imagine most of the budget went towards getting the crew cocaine to deal with the miserable shooting schedule, because it definitely doesn’t seem like it went to costumes or making the visuals look good.

And speaking of things that don’t look very good… Duck tits.

IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?

Nah.

Look, I can’t pretend this movie is amazing or anything. It is incredibly flawed, with rushed production values and more corniness than the fields of Iowa. It has trouble finding its tone, and kind of loses its webbed footing in the third act. But I have watched a metric fuckton of superhero movies in my time, and this film has a sort of corny, earnest charm that genuinely awful ones lack. Like Thor: The Dark World is utterly mediocre and forgettable, and I couldn’t tell you a single thing that happened in it, but this movie? Even with the parts it drags I could still recount some of the wacky plot beats. And maybe it has worse production values than Batman v Superman, but it’s also a lot less miserable and has a cool stop-motion alien monster instead of a shitty gray CGI blob that murders Superman. It’s just not a film that feels quite as awful in terms of comic book movies when filmmakers have gone out of their way to make infinitely worse, infinitely less fun films in the decades since.

It also helps a movie very similar to this came out that did what it was trying to do better, and you’re not gonna believe what it is: Seth MacFarlane’s Ted. It is extremely similar, a fish-out-of-water story about a fantastical being stuck in the mundanity of the real world. Ted even gets a human girlfriend, and the movie has a really weird third act that’s a bit more action packed than the rest of the film! It manages to work a lot better there, though, and that’s despite starring Mark Wahlberg! So yeah, even if the actual Howard didn’t fully live up to its interesting premise, we have something that does just that, which makes this film dropping the ball a little less egregious.

The 4.7 up there is honestly not quite as harsh as you’d think given this film’s reputation, which probably reflects how opinions of this have turned a little bit and given this film a cult following. I might even be so nice as to round it up to a 5; it’s not really a bad movie so much as a weird one, and it is filled with cheesy 80s charm if you can get on board with it. It’s probably not going to change your life, but it’s fun, mostly harmless comic book movie fluff, and if nothing else it’s unique and out there in terms of comic book movies. We wouldn’t get anything quite this weird again until they started letting people like James Gunn and Taika Waititi make comic book movies, so it’s nice to go back and see where it all began. Howard the Duck is a very interesting piece of history, maybe more for the story around it than the film itself, but damn if I don’t get a few chuckles out of watching it and a goofy grin from that cheesy end credits song.

It’s definitely more worth a watch than Wonder Woman 1984, that’s for fucking sure.

I've said Sir John Boorman would've been the perfect director for a proper adaptation of Fleming's You Only Live Twice; the most mythic of the Bond novels. His successor, Zack Snyder, is the only other candidate that could make it. He should have been the one to direct No Time To Die(2021) he would've gotten more out of the mythic material(what came from You Only Live Twice) in that film. Snyder would've taken Bond on the spiritual journey he goes through in the novel.

Zack's pitch with a younger James Bond, at 20 years old, is not exactly new. Bond producer Michael G. Wilson wanted to do something similar in the 80s. When Casino Royale(2006) was in pre-production the idea was to cast a younger James Bond in his 20s with Henry Cavill(who Snyder cast as his Superman in Man of Steel) was one of the runner ups before it was decided to go with a more mature Bond casting Daniel Craig in the part.

I was against a younger James Bond back then. I still feel that Bond should be older but at the same time the series is at a crossroads. Bond 26 is just sitting in limbo. A reality show 007: Road to a Million is streaming on Amazon Prime that no one really cares about. Maybe it is time to embrace a younger Bond.

Being a Zack Snyder fan and a James Bond fan I would love to see him tackle cinema's greatest action hero. Would EON give him the reigns to helm a Bond picture? I don't know but never say never.

Series Review: Gen V is cynical, violent, authentic and honest

When we think of superheroes, the first thing that comes to mind is the classic pop culture icons, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, X-Men, and many more, all of them have gone through changes throughout their history, They have evolved themselves to adapt to a more modern environment. Not everything has been said nor is it the end of an era that has been more than productive for the studios, whether they earn millions of dollars at the box office or are a complete failure, these films and television series are liked by everyone and everyone. Comics have been the main source of inspiration for these stories and these characters to become real on screen, in the very particular case of The Boys created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson came to give that dark and sinister turn to these heroes. As a television series in its 3 seasons, The Boys has been a success for its crudeness, its violence, for touching on political themes, the intrigues, and how well structured its characters are, this chaotic universe is completely apart from what we all already know. , where no one is all good. In 2023, The Boys franchise evolves with the development of Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg, and Eric Kripke and serves as a spin-off of The Boys, based on the comic book arc of The Boys We Gotta Go Now, Gen V promises that nothing is what it seems.

What is the series about?

At America's only college for gifted teens, talented students test their moral and personal limits as they compete for the college's highest ranking and the chance to join The Seven, Vought International's elite superhero team. , when the school's dark secrets come to light, each of them must decide what kind of heroes they want to be. Interestingly, a spin-off is being made of a series that at the time caused a lot of controversy for being strictly for adults, its graphic and explicit violence brought more followers and alienated some more, there is no doubt that this work has evolved and now they present to a group of young people who want to occupy a place in this world either because they want to help people or to gain fame and money. This popular genre, whether in film or television, has come to saturate the general public for a few years now, the varying box office figures and the critical work on the failures of many franchises are what is most talked about on social networks, being DC has had the worst productions, while Marvel is already seeing the twilight of what was a glorious era for them. Since the premiere of the Prime Video series The Boys in 2019, it has managed to do something that other superhero movies or television shows had not even imagined, attracting more serious criticism and debates about the genre at hand. When it was announced in September 2020 that there would be a spin-off of The Boys, both fans and critics were surprised that this franchise could expand even further. Talking about a spin-off as such is not so easy if it is not They have things very clear because it is precisely at this point that other productions have had a resounding failure and proof of this is the various Star Wars series that Disney + has, this was planned to introduce us to new characters that "study" in a university. The above may sound very well known, but there was already a great cinematic failure in the X-Men franchise with the film New Mutants that promised to have a group of teenage mutants in an environment more of horror than adventure and that did not work, in Partly due to the numerous changes and the global situation that existed at that time, the truth is that what starts badly ends badly. Gen V is not only a series that promises to be spectacular but also wants to deal with other types of topics and the typical problems of a teenager in a university, we have the typical sports team with possible superstars, the pretty girl who is the handsome boy's girlfriend, the misfit, the nerd, the gay, the African American and all those clichés that we have seen thousands of times but the twist here is that they all have superpowers, we have the fire boy, the one who can control minds, the telekinetic, the who can become small, the invisible boy, the one who can change gender, the one who has super strength and the one who can control his blood and make it a weapon, yes, it sounds stupid but that's how it is and he is precisely the central character of this story. Along with this, it is revealed that none of these young people were born with super abilities but that their parents injected them with compound V when they were born to follow a production line that guarantees that there will be supers in the world and which also ensures multimillion-dollar profits for its creators. When Richard Brinkerhoff, a renowned professor at Godolkin University and president of the Anti-Crime Department, informs Luke Riordan (Patrick Schwarzenegger) aka Golden Boy that he is already part of The Seven after the departure of Annie January (Erin Moriarty) aka Starlight, and Margaret Shaw (Dominique McElligott) aka Queen Maeve of the team, the company plans to revamp it and make this something new. A crazy night of drinking turns into a night of horror when the group attends a bar where Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo) uses his magnetic manipulation powers to impress a girl, things get out of control when he fatally injures her. a woman and it is Marie Moreau who uses her powers to try to save her, thus being exposed, she is expelled from the university by Richard who in turn receives a visit from Luke who, using his powers, kills him and then causes a fight in the who finally commits suicide. Without intending to, Marie becomes a hero in the eyes of the public and her fellow students, becoming one of the most popular students overnight and becoming the first African-American freshman on the power rankings list. But not everything is what it seems. After that dazzling popularity, problems also come and of course, making enemies. When she attends an interview, Marie questions her integrity because she knows that she is not the heroine that everyone believes. She used this to stay and continue her training under the advice and tutelage of Superintendent Indira Shetty (Shelley Conn) who naively believes she can help her become what she most desires.

As the series progresses we can seem to move further away from its original concept and immediately take on its personality, although we meet several characters from this world such as the son of a bitch Homelander (Antony Starr) or the perverted and stalker Deep ( Chace Crawford) or the bold idiot A-Train here are not so necessary or basic, each character is designed to be completely independent. Directors Nelson Crag and Phil Sgriccia along with writers Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg, Eric Kripke, Zak Schwartz, Brant Englestein, and Erica Rosbe are very clear about where they want to take things, to begin, this series is set parallel to the fourth season of The Boys that will arrive at some point in 2024, each character develops a very particular personality based on the violence or trauma that their powers have caused them, here the moral discourse as well as the student clichés are more than a shameless mockery, the same as the media and social networks, there are no messages that talk about love or friendship or companionship and much less about family values, here what is talked about is the manipulation of people among themselves and the means, what you are capable of doing to achieve an objective even if you have to kill a few people to do so. The series itself is so cynical that it mainly makes fun of itself, students who want to be superheroes speech that we already know from The Boys with Starlight who sooner rather than later realized that this fantastic world in appearance is shit in reality. the one that no one would want to be in, something that is not very far from the reality in which we live. Gen V as a series has important things in its favor, the first is the teenage drama very much in the style of Beverly Hills 90210 taking it to the extreme then there is that surprise factor that gives way to more moderate violence than we can expect, there is also the intrigue and the conspiracy of a multinational company that only manipulates people who try to help the world, something notable almost always happens throughout the first three episodes, its agile narrative and good direction prioritize the efficiency of what we are seeing, which is engaging. immediate to the viewer to want to continue seeing more of what happens. However, this series does not seem to be competing to be the best but rather for something equally difficult to do in a more than saturated medium and that is to successfully franchise a concept antagonistic to its franchise, it makes excellent use of its youthful cast and brings out the best in them and presents it in a way that could seem simple but is more complex than it seems and it is like that, both The Boys and now Gen V have extremely complex characters in themselves and how they interact with others, how They face the consequences of their actions and worse or better yet, it is what has given it that turn that we all wanted to see. But not everything is so good, although it has good actors and good action sequences with good special effects, some things get out of hand and that is the proportion and scope of the powers they have, for example, in episode 3 we see this girl who becomes small interacting with a normal-sized boy, it is impossible that a detail like this has been overlooked. It is the fact that for her everything would have to be gigantic and terrifying just as any sound would be magnified throughout. Is it his size, or is there the fact that in several shots of Golden Boy the fire emanating from his body looks so fake that something like that couldn't burn, his appearance is completely artificial, we could justify this by saying that it is a series of science fiction and that this is possible, and it can be like that, what is not possible is that they want to pretend that this is real when it is not. Prime One Million is cool as hell but even standard Clark of the present - since POM superman is the future - gets extra power from the people’s faith in him and has one shot a 6D God and the new multiverse he was making after dipping through 6 stars. He’s just trying real hard to pretend he’s gonna age and die with Lois.

Also a thing I think contributes to the summoning the Crown and Ring thing is Green Lanterns. They can absolutely donthat if they’re willful enough so people conflate that to the Ring of Rage and Crown of Fire.

Seriously, at the very least they are best friends, but you look at those two and tell me they are not in love. There is an entire storyline where they were so emotionally vulnerable with each other during a sleepover at the fortress of solitude it attracted an alien. That is not a joke. Bruce “emotionally constipated” Wayne and Clark Kent attracted an alien by having the strongest emotions on the planet.

it's a shame that whenever superman appears in fighting games they just do him as "Mr superhero mc punch man." I don't want that guy. Give me the weirdo from the comics. I want him to ride in on a Kryptonian thought beast as his intro. I want his special move list to be 50 entries long with every bizzare power he ever had during the gold and silver ages implemented. his level one should be the super flick, his level three should be him saving his opponent from being accidentally squashed by Kaiju Jimmy Olsen, and his level five should be the legion of superheroes traveling from the 31st century to help you curb stomp the opponent, with a 5% chance of justice legion alpha or the superman squad showing up instead. If you win sith a super he banishes the opponent to the phantom zone. His win screen is Lois lane, Lana Lang, and Lori lemalis appearing out of thin air to all kiss him on the cheek and then catfight over who doesn't get to hold his arm as he strolls off into the sunset, winking at the camera

Why isn't there fanfiction where danny is adopted by someone other than batman? Like, yes, those stories are great, but you're all ignoring the other amazing ideas that could come from him being taken in by someone else

Danny runs away and meets Clark Kent, boy Scout, who can't hear a heartbeat from this kid. Then, he takes him in, Danny is helpful to Lois, loving to Jon, and teaches Superman to treat Connor better because he didn't ask to be born, it's basically asking for hurt/comfort fic with an identity reveal and Danny and Connor being besties

Another one would be the flash, guy has a whole enemy that's literally death incarnation that chases him in the speed force (which is basically traveling through dimensions and time just like the realms) and is a very science guy, Danny being like an intern at star labs or them running into each other at a fast food place and one going 'this guy has death chasing him and realm travel stench' and flash being like 'yo dead meta??' Instant accidental adoption on Barry Allen's part

Another one, Hal Jordan green lantern, Space dad, just space dad, they'd share a sense of humour and Danny could bring down that cockiness alot, admittedly I don't have any kind of promt or idea for this but the dymanic is so easy to see in my mind

John constantine, I feel like this one should be obvious, but he's literally the master of the occult and dark arts, Danny could just show up, freak out John with his ghost king status, maybe ask for his soul (jokingly) and then like a week later John is asking himself why he's making this kid Ectoplasm pancakes at 3 am on a school night when he could be doing literally anything else, Bonus points if the league find out and all they get is 'he lives with me I guess-' from him while he asked a million questions thrown at him on why his 'child' is ya know dead
