It will be different for everybody, which is what makes it so powerful.

Reasons to reinvent yourself

The first seven days after the wedding were monotonous to say the least, and somber to say the most. The tour of the entire estate took about almost three days to finish.

And the practice of acclimating with your duties as the now lady of the estate, was much easier than receiving the never ending messages of congratulations. It was just as burdensome as you feared it would be, to be the wife of—The Gojo Satoru. 

The first few days were spent in awe of everything, even though you were not from any blood lacking affluence; but your new residence, surname, and—the living legend of sorts—husband were scintillating to a degree of blinding. And any apparent distant giggling teases of a feet sweeping honeymoon, idealized by the ladies at your reception, was not happening, to their utter dismay.  

Yet still you have come to enjoy the mundane tasks. Waking up to an empty bed for a straight week, since your first night with your husband, is compensated for by your ladies in waiting, namely, Mia and Suki . Both of their lively fuss in the morning over dressing you up feels more rejuvenating than any cup of coffee.

It makes you want to look forward to the mornings when you go to bed waiting for Satoru, only for him to slip under the sheets after he has been reassured that you are deep in slumber; to then stare at how your eyelashes fall on your cheeks, the curve of your cupid’s bow, the bridge of your nose, and the blemishes on your skin, until he falls asleep himself—to then wake up before you, leaving his side of the bed cold and empty. 

Meeting Ichiji after breakfast, to go over Satoru’s schedule, before your husband’s departure to work, feels much more inviting than having breakfast at an empty table with your husband’s absence. Discussing breakfast the previous night with chef Suzuki, lunch for yourself and the staff at the estate—as well as discussing what should be packed and sent for the lord of the estate’s lunch; looking over the need of each staff, catering to their meal requirements etc. it was quite a hard job, but it made you feel closer to each and every member of your new family. Understanding the account of the estate expenditure, making notes of days when the staff are to be paid, fulfilling their requests, corresponding with other clan members etc. surprisingly kept you busy. 

It was a matter of concern for you before, how you will be spending your time usefully, rather than just sitting idly in a pretty attire. Before, you used to spend your days teaching destitute children, until your parents deemed your career as a good pastime that went long enough to still ignore your overdue duties.

And just like that, that little freedom was also snatched away even after much groveling to your parents. So you presumed as much, it was going to be absurd to even ask your husband to continue that vocation—after all if the people of your own blood can confine you within a boundary before wedding you off on your merry way, then a husband of a week and mere convenience, was out of the question.

You smile as you walk into the kitchen and see him still sitting there against the kitchen island, "I'll make us coffee," you announce.

"Okay," Seungmin shortly says with a soft smile.

You start by filling the pot with water and putting it on the stove, and as you wait for it to boil, you scoop some coffee beans to grind.

All of a sudden, you feel a pair of arms wrapped around you and you don't have to look to know it's Seungmin.

"Does it make you happy?" He asks out of the blue.

"What? Making coffee for you?" You jokingly ask even though you know the context of that question.

You put down whatever you're holding and turn around on your feet to face him, resting your hands on his chest as you look up at him and say, "I'm happy."

"Then I'm happy," he says with a smile, leaning in to softly kiss your lips.

The kiss brings back so many things, both the good and bad things you've shared, but ultimately him. The break-up was the worst part of it but now that he's back with you, you feel happier than ever.

"I love you, Seungmin," you tell him, sliding your hand up to his neck and holding him there, "I'll never let you break up with me again."

He puts his arms around and draws you closer, "I won't."

"Good, 'cause I don't know what a menacing man like Minho would do to you if that happened," you jokingly say.

In the end, Seungmin doesn't need numbers or data or statistics, he only needs to learn from his mistakes and as much as he hates his guts, he also needs to learn a few things from Minho and one of them is being a good boyfriend to you.

The white curls of steam escape the cup of coffee as you serve it on the table in front of him, the strong smell of it awakens all of his senses.

"Thank you," he mutters his gratitude with a smile that makes his eyes smaller and offers warmth.

You watch as he takes a careful sip at it with a hand propped under your chin, "How is it?"

He puts down his cup of coffee and smiles at you, "It's perfect."

As of this moment, Seungmin will only look at you as someone he loves and wishes to always be happy, and he'll think of himself not merely as a part of the equation but as what completes the equation.

One of my favourite things about Young Royals and its characters is how much it romanticizes being utterly ordinary.

Stories often focus on characters who are exceptionally good at something or who are more ambitious than the average person. Even in the teen shows I’ve watched, these young characters always seemed to have their dream career and dream university figured out at a young age and I could never relate to that because I had none of those things figured out as a teen. It always felt like pushing this narrative that teenagers need to have their entire lives figured out before their brains are even fully developed.

None of the characters in YR seem particularly ambitious and in fact, the main character’s journey is a story of anti-ambition. When he is introduced to Simon, it is precisely Simon’s ordinariness that draws Wille to him. Sure, Simon is a very talented singer, but it’s never indicated within the series that he has dreams of being a pop star. It’s just something he likes to do. Simon is motivated by very ordinary things - he wants to do well in school so he can have better opportunities for himself, he wants to take care of his family, he wants to hang out with his friends and play video games. He’s a dedicated student but not necessarily valedictorian. It’s not his ambition that Wille is drawn to but his integrity and kindness and warmth.

Wille had a chance to be extraordinary - to be Sweden’s first gay king - but being extraordinary has never been Wille’s ambition. Wille’s ultimate goal and dream within the series’ narrative is to be free to make his own decisions and live his life as he pleases. He just wants to kiss his boyfriend and get drunk at parties and live his life one day at a time instead of spending every moment of his life preparing for an inevitable future he doesn’t want. In the end Wille is extraordinary not for his ambition, but for his bravery to reject the expectations thrust upon him and throw himself into the unknown and see where it takes him. Wille had a whole future in front of him as crown prince and future king - he’d never have to work a day in his life and would have people advising his every move - and he rejects that. This lack of ambition is not portrayed as a moral failure, but a necessary step in Wille’s journey to personal self-discovery and fulfillment of his own desires. His desire right now is simple - be free with Simon, but that doesn’t mean his dreams end here forever. He deserves peace and tranquility after all the trauma he’s been through without having to worry about where or who he’s gonna be in a few years. He deserves time to just exist.

None of the characters know where they’re going when they drive away at the end. We as the audience don’t know what careers if any these characters will find themselves in, but that’s also not important to this story. The series is saying you don’t have to have everything figured out when you’re 17 and you don’t have to do something just because your parents think they know what’s best for you and even if you don’t know exactly what you want to do, that doesn’t mean you don’t have the agency to know what you don’t want.

It’s not a moral failing to want the simple things in life or to be ordinary, and I love that Young Royals celebrates that. It shows the beauty in simple moments that feel revolutionary to a person - touching the person you love, forgiving someone and making amends after a hardship, whooping with your friends in a car as you drive into the summer and celebrates them. Ultimately these are the moments that make life worth living.

Unpopular opinion that many of you won't agree with and I am okay with that.

I know that people are kind of upset that SJM didn't post anything today on ACOTAR's 10th anniversary.

And while I understand the disappointment, I feel like we are the ones to blame for it, and for her complete disengagement from the fandom.

Her fanbase hates every character she created, constantly craps on the IC, which are obviously her favorites, hates Rhys, Feyre, Cassian, Elain, Mor, etc. Only likes Azriel in conjunction with Gwyn, which isn't her intention. Her fandom is obsessed with Tamlin and Lucien, characters she clearly dislikes or has no interest in. Her fanbase writes huge metas about how every single thing she ever wrote sucks. How she is sexist, racist, homophobic, how she is a tradwife, how awful her characters are, how everyone is toxic and abusive. How she promotes SA. How she promotes horrible relationships. Some fuckers went after her Holocaust-survivor grandma! People threatened SJM. Threatened her kids. Vowed to destroy her and her career.

She was a teen when she set out to write stories. She was happy writing them. But the fandom destroyed any goodwill that she had for it and I don't blame her for wanting to pull back as far from it as possible.

Personally, I've experienced a lot of hate in this fandom, and even though I have thick skin, sometimes it gets very difficult to deal with it day in and day out. Even when I actively avoid things that have been posted about me--and I know SJM does the same and avoids social media--it's often impossible to shield yourself completely.

It hurts especially hard when it pertains to something you spend so much time doing. Writing is a tedious, boring and solitary activity. But you live with the characters. You have extremely close relationships with them. They are almost like children to you. You conceived them, carried them, bore them, nurtured them. And when someone starts accusing you of awful things, and bashing these characters, there is no way not to take it seriously.

No amount of 'training' or 'preparedness' actually prepares you for how hurtful it could be. How vicious people get, because social media offers them anonymity and they feel that they can just word-vomit freely and without recourse.

SJM is a writer. She wanted to write stories that lived in her head. Her life and her writing don't revolve around some bullshit issues that people want to actively get upset about, because it will get them views on TikTok and because it's trendy to do so and to shit on everything and everyone.

No, she isn't active and doesn't engage not because she has kids, or is busy, or whatever. That's just cop out excuses. No. She just doesn't want to. And I GET HER. That's why I am not mad.

She feels like she fulfilled the contract with us, as in --she writes the books and we read them. And she doesn't owe us anything beyond that. She treats us like crap because we treat her like crap.

As the old saying goes: don't shit where you eat.

If you wanted engagement, if you wanted your questions answered, if you wanted Lives, then people shouldn't have acted like complete twats for the past 10 years towards her.

Unfortunately, a few bad apples spoiled the whole damn bunch and now we are all paying the price.

I wish she was more active and I wish she engaged with the fandom. But I get her. I wouldn't either.

That's just my 2 cents. I know most will disagree with my stance, but I applaud her for aloofness. Because maybe people will realize that you can't just treat authors and creators in general like crap, and then complain and demand interactions.
