#pureo compulsion example as identified by Robert Bray, MD:
dissecting a past situation seen as unfavourable to catch patterns from multiple angles in order to ensure it won’t happen again. *to be differentiated from learning from past happenings in retrospect. a compulsion distinguishes itself through over-fixation as well as rooted core-fear.
my experience with this:
i dissected a particular mess i got myself into from hundreds of angles almost daily after i got myself out of it. i thought that if i dissected it hard enough, i could catch all of the giveaway signs and would ensure that i would never, ever put myself in that dynamic again – and protect myself. not only was it stressful to follow this thread, but it only stuck me into dead ends and loops of thinking which morphed into other loops of thinking.
breaking down the compulsion:
what is the rooted core-fear? that i will be in pain again.
what is the irrational belief behind this compulsion? that there can ever be a certainty.
disputing through REBT: there is no certainty that any situation would repeat itself with the same patterns and giveaway signs. life is too complex. yes, i might get hurt again. yes, i might end up in that dynamic again. yes, i might have to pull myself out of that dynamic again. it might not be pleasant.
i accept the uncertainty of that and the possibility (probability) of pain.

Understanding Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)
Tumblr media
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a form of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) developed by psychologist Albert Ellis in the 1950s. According to Ellis, our thoughts, beliefs and interpretations of an event play an important role in shaping our emotional response to said event, this response is not based on the result of the event. REBT is used to help individuals highlight these irrational beliefs and patterns of behaviour that lead to emotional stress. This knowledge can be used further to make small but effective changes in one’s thought process to mitigate negative responses.
The process follows a particular model, this model is known as the ABCDEF model.
Every alphabet in the name corresponds to a step in the process of REBT. These steps are as follows:
Adversity (A): Adversity is a specific aspect of a situation that might contribute to our disturbance. Irrational Beliefs (B): The beliefs or attitudes that one actively forms in one’s mind about adversity. Consequences ©: The irrational beliefs influence our emotions, thoughts and behaviour. Disputing the Beliefs (D): This step tries to understand the result of our beliefs by processing the information from the prior steps.
Now let’s take a look at how these steps help us deal with our emotions:
1. Identifying the Trigger: By analyzing every aspect of an event and breaking it down into parts, people can better highlight the ‘trigger’ that brought upon the negative response. Triggers often give rise to emotional distress and irrational thoughts, these outcomes affect our behaviour and cloud our judgment. 2. Challenging Irrational Thoughts: Once the response is identified, we can question irrational thoughts with reason and logic. This process involves evaluating the accuracy, usefulness, and validity of irrational thoughts before replacing them with more reasonable and rational patterns of thought. 3. Changing Thought Process: REBT promotes reasonable ways of dealing with a trigger, this reworked thought process builds emotional resilience in a person resulting in the limitation of negative emotional responses.
REBT is most effective in treating emotion-based responses but it also helps people limit negative stimuli by using various cognitive skills:
Triggers: By focusing on problem-solving skills, social skills, conflict resolution skills and decision-making we can help address the triggers that cause the negative response. This thought process helps us better deal with the triggers and leads to rational thoughts. Irrational Beliefs: We can target the irrational beliefs by reframing thought processes, prioritizing rationality and exposing ourselves to the outcomes to overcome the fear of the negative outcomes. All these methods condition our mind to not have a negative reaction to the triggers and limit emotional distress. Emotional Consequences: Although dealing with the consequences can be hard at times, REBT promotes necessary coping skills to mitigate the mental damage done by said consequences. These coping methods include meditation, relaxation and mindfulness. By minimizing the emotional strain the negative responses put on our mind we can better help ourselves in dealing with the consequences and building mental resilience.
Summing up:
Although it might work for everyone out there, it is still worth a shot. The skills learnt in the process of REBT are useful in various forms of life. Overall, REBT promotes self-awareness, and resilience, increasing quality of life and fulfillment.

A Deep Dive Into Antisocial Mindsets
how does the mind of a person with aspd work?
First off, it's important to understand what ASPD is, so let's get a few things cleared up before we really dive into it.
Antisocial Personality Disorder is classified in the DSM-5 as a cluster B personality disorder, and in the ICD-11 as a "personality disorder with dissociality".
(Since I live in a country that typically uses the DSM-5 as a guideline and it has a set classification for ASPD, I will be referring mainly to that.)
It's described as "pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others", and characterized as a maladaptive* practice of antisocial* behaviours.
*Maladaptive: Behaviours that cause issues in someones ability to adapt normally to daily situations
*Antisocial: Behaviours that are antagonistic to social practices, rules, and/or expectations
A personality disorder is
characterized by deeply ingrained maladaptive patterns of behavior, thoughts, and emotions that deviate from the cultural norms and cause distress or impair functioning in various areas of life
The current criteria for diagnosing ASPD involves a reoccurring, ingrained pattern of three or more of the following (occurring from at least age 15):
failure to conform to social norms, as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest.
repeated lying, deceitfulness, conning others for personal pleasure or profit
impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
irritability and aggressiveness
reckless disregard for safety of self or others
consistent irresponsibility
lack of remorse, being indifferent to or rationalizing having mistreated another
To understand ASPD, we need to dig a little bit deeper than a set of symptoms. It is important to note also that antisocial traits and beliefs are not necessarily an indication of antisocial personality disorder.
"only when antisocial personality traits are inflexible, maladaptive, and persistent and cause significant functional impairment or subjective distress do they constitute antisocial personality disorder." - DSM5
Antisocial beliefs in ASPD are views about themselves, others, and the world that are heavily engrained into their thoughts, perceptions, and behaviours. Most importantly, these traits negatively impact the individuals life on a regular basis. They are dysfunctional and reoccuring. In the criteria for ASPD, these harmful behavioural issues must have been present in the individuals life from at least 15 years old.
Looking into what causes ASPD can help us further gain insight into the condition as well.
"child abuse or neglect, unstable or erratic parenting. or inconsistent parental discipline may increase the likelihood that conduct disorder will evolve into antisocial personality disorder." -DSM5
"...in the absence of a parent or other caring, involved adult, a child cannot internalize his parent's values, a necessary factor in the development of morality."
"in homes where no adult takes an interest in or expresses love to a child, the conscience does not develop and the individual fails to be socialized in this very critical way. It seems likely that this is at least one possible cause of antisocial personality. Another possibility is that highly inconsistent discipline and attention, even from the same person, prevents the child from forming normal values."
"This form of child rearing allows the child to grow up without a clear understanding of what is right and what is wrong. Behaviorists believe that individuals learn their behavior by testing behaviors to see which is successful. Studies have shown that people with antisocial personality disorder frequently have fathers with the same disorder, and the child often observes and mimics the father's behavior." - Drug Therapy & Personality Disorders
A very important factor in early years of development is being taught about the "social contract". Like any other animal, children learn by seeing, and doing. They are highly impressionable, coming into the world as a blank slate. Children look to their peers and primary caregivers for guidance on how to respond to situations, and how to view the world.
(It is believed that there is commonly a genetic component to ASPD, and the environment may either worsen the antisocial traits or teach the child how to cope/adapt in positive ways)
If a child develops in an unstable situation, they may internalize maladaptive behaviours as a way to adapt, or because they don't have any healthy guidance to challenge these beliefs and behaviours towards the world.
Studies show that people with ASPD are highly likely to have grown up in neglectful and/or physically abusive households. There is also a correlation with children growing up witnessing criminal activity and the development of ASPD.
This is a very important factor to consider when looking into the mindsets of somebody with dysfunctional antisocial traits.
If a child comes into the world with no clue how anything works, or what anything means, and the only information they're given about the world is harmful, they will uncritically learn and adapt to that information.
A key element of ASPD beliefs is self-preservation. This heavily connects to a history of neglect, as the child who had no stable caregiver will grow to not trust that others will be reliable. They may also grow to not know what a healthy, trusting, caring connection with others looks like.
Personality Disorders are often thought to be something of a defence mechanism. A maladaptive defence mechanism as a response to a stressful environment in childhood that remained unchallenged and unsoothed.
Another key feature of this is that antisocial beliefs are related to justification. This is directly mentioned in the DSM-5 criterion A.7
"being indifferent to or rationalizing having mistreated another"
It is important to note, however, only 51% of those with ASPD will match this criteria. This doesn't necessarily take away from the general idea that antisocial beliefs include a rampant chain of excuses and justification to brush off their behaviours.
"individuals with personality disorders often view their symptoms as consistent with their own self-image, or ego-syntonic, and not as problems that need treatment." - Drug Therapy & Personality Disorders
ASPD is characterized by a disregard for others, rules, and norms. A common belief in people with ASPD is that they are above consequences, and never in the wrong. They refuse to put themselves in a submissive position to others, which often manifests as refusal to follow rules, responsibilities, and expectations.
At their core, they fear being controlled, weak, and losing power/dominance in a situation. They often lack the care, self-control, and forethought needed to healthily adapt to situations that threaten them. To them, it is a dog eat dog world, every man for themselves, survival of the fittest.
If we view ASPD as a maladaptive defense mechanism, then we can understand better how and why they respond to situations this way.
Studies show that reactive aggression* and hostile interpretation* is heavily prominent in those with antisocial behavioural patterns.
*Reactive Aggression: Aggressive behaviour in reaction to a perceived threat
*Hostile interpretation: Interpreting something as hostile or threatening to them
This means that people with ASPD are more likely than the average person to view an ambiguous comment, situation, etc as hostile (regardless of whether or not it actually was), and more likely to respond to that percieved threat with aggression.
The child who grew up in a hostile environment may have developed a brain that scans for the tiniest sign of an attack, and responds as it sees fit. It bites back.
As stated before, self-preservation is a very prominent trait in those with ASPD, and it is associated with a justification of their actions. People with ASPD think and act based on a worldview that everything is a matter of power and control, being on top or being hurt, dog eat dog.
In those who have ASPD, they commonly find themselves unwilling to, or unable to, care for anything but themselves. They often lack an empathetic response to others. "Not my life, not my problem". They are typically very defensive and protective of themselves, and protective towards things they value, but wont experience or express any care, compassion, or empathy towards anything they deem 'unworthy'.
It is the persistent irrationality and the ingrained lack of healthy adaptations and reponses to situations that makes ASPD a disorder. And it's the aggressive/dominating responses to threats, and justification of their responses, that makes the disorder antisocial.

How do you not repress feelings but not let everything take over? I have very bad ocd and it seeps into my relationship as well, I always feel the minute I don’t like something or it so slightly hurt my feels or I get worried it’s a small red flag that means this relationship is doomed, I need to address it. But I also know rationally, I don’t think rationally all the time and I can’t decipher what is to be brought up and what isn’t
I pay extremely close detail to everything. If my partner says I love you but forgets the goodnight part, I immediately think something is wrong or doesn’t like me anymore
I’ll have really good weeks and be doing great and then really bad weeks where I feel like I’m going insane noticing everything. I’ve been able to learn how to stay much calmer during those feelings but it still nags sometimes.
Hey sweetie, the key to not suppressing your emotions is doing the healing work. I would definitely look into codependency, regulating your nervous system and emotional trauma release. It sounds like there are issues with inner safety, which are most likely related to something that has happened in your childhood. And it's not that your current relationship is mirroring a past trauma, it's just the same emotions that come up when you're triggered today, are the same emotions felt in the past, and it's like a wound being poked at. You need to heal the wound. Advice on how to heal:
1] Get therapy, you want to find someone you can trust, someone you feel safe to open up to, someone who you see growth with as the sessions continue.
2] Try emotional freedom tapping (EFT), I am currently doing sessions to clear out old traumas, it's honestly incredible. I do one session per week and found a very affordable virtual coach on https://www.fiverr.com
3] Reading books, healing books. I recommend going to the book store in the self help section and seeing what books call out to you. Books on co-dependency, books on healing your inner child, books on self love, books on healing your nervous system, somatic healing some suggestions.
4] Journal. Build that bond between you and you. That self love, that I am my own best friend energy has to exist so you are not sabotaging and hurting yourself as you are on this path. Your journal is a space to express what is going on, how you feel, what you want to feel, what you want to let go, love letters to yourself. It's your opportunity to understand and get to know you better on a deeper level.
5] Speak to your partner and allow him to understand what is going on and what exactly your needs are. Learn about Dr Cheyenne Bryants High Functioning / Low functioning behaviour dynamic in relationships (research online), in short when you are in those triggered moments (low functioning) your partner needs to be able to cover you with behaviours that support you instead of also succumbing to your level and leaving you both in low functioning dynamic. This will require communication and a healthy relationship dynamic so you can support each other no matter what.
I hope these help! xoxoxo

Big obsessed with all of the BG3 villains. The themes of the cycle of abuse/trauma in all of the main cast makes me feral over how the villains unfortunately do not/did not get the opportunity to be "saved" by Tav (if doing a good playthrough) and by experiencing the heros journey.
I could talk about Ketheric and Orin, but after reading @bearhugsandshrugs fic it got me deep diving into Gortash's character. It's amazing and everyone should read it especially if you're weak for Tav/Gortash like I am 👀💩
Trigger warning for abuse mentions below the cut.
Let me start with stating this is NOT an Enver Gortash apologist post, he's evil and he's done terrible things. This is just me yelling into the void about character foils.
Childhood abuse:
In game we really only get to know his history through background information that we can scrape together if you search through the city and the House of Hope.
We don't get any details on what exactly Enver went through as a child. We can assume neglect/possible violence from his parents given his mother's words and the fact they sold him. We get to know that he was beaten when living in the House of Hope, but not what other possible horrors he could have experienced there (not including just the trauma of witnessing the other debtors and Hope), what age he was, or for how long (if anyone knows more timeline wise I'd love to know) he lived there before he escaped. We don't know how he escaped either, if he had help or did so on his own.
I'm no child psychologist, but abuse has lasting effects as we can see through all of the main party. Victims of abuse tend to have difficulty moving past certain emotional stages in their life. Aka a person abused in their childhood may have issues maturing emotionally without therapy, etc (again I'm not a psychologist). There is a strong possibility that "Child" Enver is still probably holding the reins emotionally while adult Enver isn't even aware of how his past affects every action and reaction he has at all times.
I can't imagine how living with Raphael during ones formative years being healthy in anyway, but we can definitely see some of the learned behaviours he's picked up from the Cambion. A focus on possing/presentation, a suave persona, torturing/using people for his own gain, a general lack of empathy, deal making, similar attire with devil motifs...
Unhealthy coping mechanisms:
Speaking of attire, Enver's coat not allowing Fear to be cast on him speaks volumes to me. Imagine the absolute horror of moving from one situation of abuse to another much worse one in the hells as a child/teen and probably being in a state of fear/anxiety at all times. Enver wearing a coat that doesn't allow him to feel fear gives me three main thoughts:
1. He is doing everything in his power to avoid that specific emotion and therefore prevents himself from thinking about that period of his life. Meaning he is not confronting his trauma the same way the main party is forced to throughout the game.
2. Narratively does the coat prevent him from feeling any fear at all? Or do we just go with the game mechanic that ensures he cannot be made afraid by the fear spell? If it prevents him from feeling fear at all (which I think is narratively more interesting and you can take this headcanon out of my cold dead hands) how does this effect his every day decisions? Fear prevents risky decisions all the time, it's one of the emotions that actively keeps people alive. Psychopaths usually don't experience fear the same way an average person would. Given his many horrific actions (the Iron Throne being a key example) I wonder how much his forceful removal of fear has done to his perception of rational thought. If you aren't afraid of consequences what's to stop you from doing anything at all? Selling a loyal body guard to the hells, torturing an entire faction of people in order to manufacturer your own personal army, stealing from an immensely powerful devil aka mother fucking MEPHISTOPHELES??? He presents himself as calm and collected in conversation. He appears as if he's the most rational of all three villains when he's really just as awful when we look into what he's actually been up to vs seeing Orin and Ketheric kill people on screen.
3. Where did he get the coat? Did he make it himself or was it a boon from Bane? A promise to a devout worshiper that he would never be made to feel afraid or beneath anyone again?
Another abuser - Bane:
Speaking of Bane... Another user (please tag if anyone can find the original post!) mentioned a line Astarion says where he states that he prayed to all the gods, but none answered. OP wondered if Enver, trapped in the hells and desperate for salvation, called out the same way... only for Bane to be the only god to answer. I'd die to know specifically when he was introduced to Bane and made to be his chosen.
We know Bane is considered an evil god and we even find that if we kill Enver and then use speak with dead that Bane is torturing him in the afterlife for failing him.
Given this abusive relationship is Enver a foil for Gale, a man groomed from a young age by a goddess and left with the consequences when his actions did not meet her expectations?
Is he like Shadowheart, someone who was given no alternative and made to believe they willingly chose their god only to learn they were deceived and never had any other options?
Like Wyll he's cast out by his father (or in his case both parents).
Like Lae'zel he's worshipping a deity with false promises, how can he believe he'll rule the entire world like a god himself when Bane the god of TYRANNY would see no other at the top but himself (Was he secretly planning to use the crown like Gale to usurp Bane or just pandering to us)?
We know he and Karlach are absolutely foils for each other given that he is her abuser and like himself Karlach was forged by her times in the hells only to survive on her own merits.
Those are my thoughts! Would love to know anyone else's on the walking red flag that is Lord Enver Gortash.
If Enver lost his memories like the Dark Urge would he be given a chance to redeem himself through his actions? Could he with his knowledge of infernal engines fix Karlach's heart
Would Enver have ever become Lord Gortash if not for Bane...?
Anyways if anyone wants to yell at me about Enver, Orin, or Ketheric please feel free to do so! I love characters who fell through the cracks because they had no one there to help them only to crawl out themselves and burn the world.

In fairness, most adults who act like toddlers do so because they’re emotionally stuck at that age and lack the cognitive tools to grow themselves up, or even any understanding that they *need* to grow up. The essence of disorders like BPD and NPD is literally just catastrophically arrested emotional development, and it isn’t always the person’s conscious decision to act like an asshat; without therapy they lack the understanding and tools to behave better, because the brain never developed emotionally beyond the age of around 2-4 (I say this as someone with both disorders who is currently in therapy).
Obviously that doesn’t give someone the right to be an immature or destructive asshole with no consequences, but it does suggest that the best way to deal with them is avoidance if you can, or the imposition of firm but fair boundaries and consistent consequences for bad behaviour if you can’t. Emotionally immature adults tend to respond to unconstructive criticism and punishment the same way as actual children, and for the same reasons; they dig in their heels and keep acting out, because that’s the only way they can understand to get their needs met due to their immaturity.
Rationally, I am willing to acknowledge that. Emotionally, I'm still seething too hard to be civil.

Self development series: trust your perception. No matter what.
Tumblr media
For inner planets in 7th, 8th, 12th house, water signs placements, water risings.
Those of us who have not been on the good side of fate keep thinking what is wrong with us. The "other people" appear to be socializing, relaxed and living it out. But you stare from a distance, comparing your life to them, wondering why you are surrounded by malicious people and most importantly, how to change your pattern?
You must trust your perception. Cognitive Dissonance is when contradictory perceptions, beliefs, actions, feelings, ideas, values and things are told to you by somebody else. You are unable to trust your own perception. You are confused about your reality. For example, a man who cheats on his partner but says that he loves her still. Again cheats but says he is wired like that, men are men, he is polyamorous, it is his biological instinct, in past kings used to keep 100 wives. Of course, you are confused. Or someone who does something problematic but says "you are jealous of me, you are insecure, I dont care what you say, I am not wrong at all - you are wrong". This causes mental confusion to you. The other person is straight up lying, making it up, manipulating, but to you it is confusion.
People are not "oh so complicated" like that. People are actually easy to understand if you observe the patterns. The same patterns repeat all their lives. They can pretend to be somebody else for a day or two but the facade ultimately falls. Trust your judgment. We cannot guarantee to make the best decisions all the time but learning to trust your judgment will make you assertive, confident and secure in yourself.
It is especially for those who are trauma survivors, they are vulnerable and impressionable. Abusive people abuse then confuse. They might justify or rationalize their behaviour because religion/science/mythology/history says so, they will devalue you one minute then claim to love you the next minute - say it is for your benefit/it is your fault/they did not mean it. Do not be fooled by the words, trust the patterns.
We are humans, of course we will connect with language and words. Whatever language you speak, you connect with others. I am writing in English, you know English, you understand what I write, it aligns with your judgment so you trust what I say. I have to hold this trust by not lying, misleading, manipulating otherwise I will become an abuser.
It will help to read on sociopath v/s narcissist on internet. Do not underestimate the number of toxic people around you. Of course we cannot diagnose mental illness in others but we can identify their symptoms and draw our boundaries. Not all narcissists are sociopath, but all sociopaths are narcissists. Trust the patterns. Not all narcissists are alpha overt type, not all narcissists will financially exploit others. You decide where you draw the boundary. Especially if you are guilty of emotional investment and intense reactions before and want to change the scene in your life.
So, the next time you see someone flattering or love bombing you and you know their pattern beforehand, trust that they are not sincere this time as well.
Why do people become abusers? Destiny, perhaps. Do abusers know they are abusive? It depends. Some of them do not know they are emotionally abusive, some know but still do it. Patterns are hard to identify and change for the abuser. They are so intertwined in their reality that they dont even know what they are doing. You can see a narcissist doing their "dance" from a distance but he/she will not know it. It takes immense will power to change your patterns in your 20s, 30, 40s. Then it is even harder beyond that. What is a spiritual event that can change an abuser? Anything that forces them to enter intense emotional distress. Rock bottom, social outcast, divorce, ultimate failure in life etc. This is why you see some toxic people are genuinely transformed, they go to rehab or therapy or do inner work on their own. There is no genuine transformation without emotional turmoil. Those who feel deeply also transform.
For those who do not change? Forgive them. Distance yourself. Know that if they knew what they were doing, if they genuinely had the insight, they would be blown by shock and remorse. Leave them in their reality. There are plenty of decent people living their lives, looking for friends like you.

Hi!! (Im so sorry if im annoying u guys, I just like this blog sm ok😭)
I just wanted to say that I have been relatively new to this fandom, since season 1 came out, and it was great! It felt like a space for asexual amd neurodivergent ppl, and I loved all the fanartists and theorists (still do) but after season 2, and I have a confession to make here, I too was on the "anti aziraphale" bus, properly boarded, seated and all. I know I didnt indicate that in the post I made, but I didnt self identify as one, I just "agreed" with what many of the crowd holding those setiments said. Why? My dear fellow, it was simply because of poor self esteem! I related alot to aziraphale, and so seeing those posts, where ppl talked abt traits( he and I share), like his love for his interests, his exaggerated movements, his anxieties, and seeing ppl dismiss them, or make fun of them, or call him "an emotional idiot" as that one lovely person said, well it felt like looking in a mirror, because those were the exact same things I said to myself! I told myself all those things, that I didnt deserve forgiveness from ppl I loved, when I made mistakes, I told myself that I should "tone down" my excitement for my interests, and the rest. I found myself mentally taking notes, and altering my behaviour, after reading those posts, bc hey, I hate myself for having those traits, and it looks like other ppl hate this one character for having those traits too, better "shape up" and "do better" yknow?
I stopped following thise blogs, but I still seeked the posts out. Why? Bc it felt "good". It felt like my negative self talk was being validated. It felt like I "finally" found posts that wouldnt "mince words" and be as mean, and rude as they possibly could be to him, because that was "what he, and anyone else like him deserved." (Im not saying that the ppl who made those posts said that, im saying that I made myself believe that I deserved that)
Maybe I shouldnt have internalized what the posts said. Maybe I shouldnt even care all that much abt a single character, I mean obviously the ppl who made those posts werent thinking about me were they? They werent targetting me, so why did I feel all that much. It didnt matter how much I rationalized it, at the end if the day I was making myself miserable, but it felt familiar, so I kept at it
I found this blog, and it felt.. so surreal. Like ppl were defending aziraphale? Ppl were giving him, grace? What? And then I read the analysis and responses that u guys gave, and realized that I also had biases, and I found myself giving more empathy to aziraphale, and then I found myself extending that same empathy to myself. I also started going to therapy also, and I realzied that no, I made mistakes, but I am human, forgivable, that my interests arent things to hide, but rather things that make me happy, and that I shouldnt be harsh to myself bc of that. It all progressed slowly, but I could feel myself becoming, happier. I didnt hide my excitement, I didnt tone down my "exaggerated" movements. I started treating aziraphale's character with love and lo and behold, I found myself loving myself too.
I have bad days, I still do. But they are lesser in number now. Whats the point of this long ass ask? Well, I want u to know that u guys are essentially teaching ppl to be more empathetic towards others and sometimes towards themselves, by being being empathetic towards aziraphale. U are telling people like me, indirectly ofc, to love who we are, and to give ourselves grace. And that while aziraphale (and ppl like him) maybe flawed, that shouldnt warrant hate, but rather understanding. U guys are wonderful, and I promise u, u guys are helping❀
Im sorry to whoever that person was that left, im sorry that they were harassed as I am sure, those werent ur intentions. But what I am trying to say is that u are not making this fandom more toxic. U are helping people. U guys are a breath of relief in the fandom. Pls remember that.
(Sorry if this is too long to read, or too emotional, ive been in a bit of a mood I suppose, and being vulnerable like this is terrifying but agsjsgkahsbs what can one do, have a great day!đŸ€—)
My dear, I'm so humbled to read this. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. As an autistic person, watching Aziraphale ever since 2019 has helped me unmask a lot, so I totally understand how the bad criticism towards him may have pushed you into masking yourself. It does hurt đŸ«‚
I'm so happy that we've helped you on your journey and that we even helped you seek therapy (everyone should and every time a friend tells me I helped them get there I feel like I won in life). This is what we aim for here in this space, this is what makes it all worth it.
Thank you for the reassurance, it is very much needed sometimes. We want to fight toxicity, not contribute to it, and feedback like yours is very much needed to know we're on the right path. We hope to bring comfort for those who are feeling harmed by the situation.
And of course thank you SO MUCH for sharing your feelings with us, this is the juice we need to keep going đŸ©¶
And finally: remember that you are and will always be good enough and that you deserve better. And no matter what, be yourself! Good luck and we're glad to have you on our train đŸ„°

so now i’m Seeing everyone talking about the fight(tm) and from my personal experience as a bitch that used to bottle up her emotions and refused to talk about problems to her boyfriend until it exploded into a fight, i’ve gotta say:
The most interesting ones (looking back at it) were the ones where he tried to get me to talk and say something rational and i just picked up every single chance to provoke him and hurt him. He’d start trying to tell me how my my actions hurt him and i’d just say “you motherfucker just say it that you don’t love me” just to fuel the fight, so he’d get more and more mad to the point of loosing his patience and I’d have an excuse to throw on him all my anger. I really wanted to be close to him but when times got hard the only way i knew to express myself and feel his attention was fighting.
I feel like Annie wouldn’t be too far from that. She never learned how to express emotions so they involuntarily come out violently and irrationally,
Let me know what you think!
(Now I’m in therapy don’t worry HAHAH)
Ooohhh that's very insightful!
It's not that Annie's intentionally hurting Armin though she's conscious of it; there's a big difference between being aware of one's actions and causing harm to someone with intent to hurt. Annie's emotions are volatile - especially at this time, unlike during the Peace Summit where she was constrained by bigger things in motion such as the place, new faces and public etiquette.
But yes, speaking very generally (and not just VBEOW-centric) such behaviour that invalidates a person's concern and uses it to attack them instead is... Harmful to the relationship as a whole. I can relate somewhat; when I was in high school, I went through a time when I hurt people a lot because I felt very insecure, very scared, very frustrated and very unloved. Whatever the underlying reason, it's a defense mechanism, though capable of cutting wounds.
We will see how the fight goes! Though it's important to bear in mind, I think, that Annie is very aware of Armin's feelings and his hurt - it's just that she expresses her awareness and her inner turmoil quite poorly in the face of so much emotional stress - something she isn't very used to feeling so much.
Thank you very much for sharing btw! I'm glad you're doing better and that you can think of the past this way :3

Born “gifted”; grown chronically depressed
// long, personal post. basically a tutorial on express therapy (and by express I mean 10 years of rationalising, learning psychology on myself and fictional characters + 48 hours of not sleeping)
When I was grieving I spent 48 hours sleepless
it’s not that I couldn’t sleep. I’ve been on insomnia medication for 3 years now. I just had to “have a reason” and time to actually acknowledge my emotion and thoughts which caused my body to struggle with setting a “proper” circadian rhythm
Living with a 5 person family in basically a studio flat for 13 years of my life low-key harmed my ability to think and “feel” without privy eyes
this accidentally sent my brain into survival mode where I could only “think rationally” at night
So when we moved out and I got to have a room of my own
that’s when *serious* sleep problems started
my brain would just REFUSE to shut the fuck up
first off I was used to tv noise while falling asleep
i fixed it up with some rain sounds or watching ATLA when I was feeling funky
it distracted me enough
still I wouldn’t fucking sleep.
because my brain didn’t feel like it
probably hyperactivity which I could never “treat” with sport as an asthmatic kid
also an outcast but it is what it is
unable to name the cause of my insomnia I would just head to sleep at 10pm. Two reasons for that:
a) you know what they say! Don’t trust your thoughts after 10PM
b) 8h of sleep is THE healthy amount. And it seems like my brain likes waking up early for whatever reason!
yeah also I went through a fair share of medication before they got it right
anyways whoops I’m depressed now. Very depressed and even more anxious. Day by day my brain is giving me more compulsive behaviours and thoughts! Yaaay!
so I went through a 3 years worth of antidepressants
also a lot of unintended research (thanks, tiktok.)
basically I “subconsciously” KNEW what my problem is but “consciously” my brain refused I acknowledge it because haha living in the state of constant survival mode is way more fun! right?
right?
basically it was like being a doctor and being pretty certain about the diagnosis but having to go to some other doctor to objectively either confirm or discard my diagnosis
yeah anyways I changed medication, SNRI, venlafaxine
known to help some adhd folk with severe vegetative depression for “no reason”
Yeah basically my new psychiatrist kept on upping the dose until I got “a kick in the ass” so we know it works
and then my aunt died.
wELL my workaholic and emotionally constipated child brain would NOT acknowledge it
hell you’d catch me dead before I’d admit that I felt shitty but didn’t know how to deal with that because at the same time I “saw it coming”
No one ever told me she’s sick
I just saw her hair loss (or rather a sudden haircut change and awkward silence that followed) and had some foggy memory of someone saying her sister died of cancer
Mind you I don’t fucking remember my childhood that well
hell I don’t remember it at all but it is what it is
I just “know” some things and some are more of a “hunch”
I have this information buried in my brain but I can’t recall how it got there, ykwim?
yeah basically I was suspecting she’s dying of cancer but I was trying to stay optimistic and told myself I’m “overthinking it”
and I thought the mourning was “good enough of a reason” to stay up for 48 hours, write down my “thoughts” and wail all day long (yes, everyone gave me shit for crying growing up, how did you know?)
anyways yeah I did this and suddenly I “solved” the root of ALL my anxieties and minor paranoias.
as if it was a fucking riddle. Or a fucking house MD episode.
I hope you can understand WHY I’m so livid.
I SPENT OVER 3 YEARS ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND MADE ONE THERAPIST CRY JUST BECAUSE MY BRAIN WENT SO FAR INTO THE SURVIVAL MODE EVERY TIME I INTERACTED WITH A HUMAN BEING. IM JUST FUCKING AUTISTIC AND TRAUMATISED NOT “ANXIOUS” AND “PARANOID”
OH FOR FUCKS SAKE
Also I’m fucking dyslexic. But hyperlexic at the same time. I mean I’m hyperlexic in my native language, and I “remember” the spellings so I went undiagnosed
but I love technology. I want to be a CS student and then I’ll see where I can go from here. I’d love to work on an online learning platform for “gifted” children
y’know so they don’t lose their childhood but at the same time can associate learning with something nice and actually enjoyable
I think a lot of “gifted kid burnout” comes from the | dopamine <—> habit making | mechanism
so if children can learn they don’t HAVE TO be good at every subject and learn their “strengths and weaknesses” early on
Hardships later on won’t be as depressing
cause hey maybe I’m not the best at english but I know a lot about maths and I like maths and maybe when I grow older I can be a mathematician!!
you see what I mean?
at least this is what I’m trying to do for myself
generational trauma and neurodivergency running in the family made me develop some shitty coping mechanisms (example - perfectionism in order to cope with my actual time blindness and the “need” for structure while hating organisation and refusing “unreasonable” authority)
I wasn’t raised catholic, not really
nor was I raised queer lol
but my brain reacted to religion the same way people who went through religious trauma did
basically I put myself through religious trauma on accident!
fun, aye?
what I mean is, I grew up religious because that’s what “felt right”
tradition and all that
and then I realised the catholics hate me for no fucking reason
and then I thought “well fuck you too!” And called myself an atheist
later it went into agnostic
and a couple of weeks back I grew OBSESSED with religion
christian one I mean
Fuck I even started reading the nsrv bible in english (!)
and then I tried to interpret it “by myself” using some historical context and googling some stuff
WHAAAAAAAT! Turns out the bible is a product of its own time and is not to be taken literally!
That’s crazy innit?
Yeah and then I realised all of my recent hyperfixations (last two years) were a silent ways of rationalising ALL my “unreasonable” anxiety and trauma caused by; you guessed it
NOT UNDERSTANDING SYMBOLISM AND SOCIAL CUES AS IT IS
IN MY NATIVE FUCKING LANGUAGE
I can learn *any* language
I just need some books, movies, music in said language
But don’t ask me about any grammar. I don’t care about grammar. And you can’t make me. Idfk what present simple is but I can shove it so far up your ass your own mother won’t recognise you. so yeah
I’m great at learning languages cause they’re a “brainless” work for me
I mean
I learn languages for fun - it’s a tool to communicate with broader audience AND find more knowledge on the internet (I Google EVERYTHING in english)
and when someone tries to make it into an actual job of mine. This is when it goes downhill.
also english being coded as “language of knowledge” is my “main” language
my native language is way more complicated and I never really had to acknowledge my emotion in polish
I mean maybe I did but I just never wanted to cause I never learned that! English in comparison is simple. It allows me to communicate simple ideas without the need to “sound smart”
this and isolation from my peers (kids are bastards) gave me an actual “language barrier”
which isn’t the case really
it was just my overthinking
I started enjoying polish music way more recently cause I can never get the lyrics
so I listen only to what sounds “cool”
in english on the other hand the most of my music taste was built around midwestern emo and folk punk
cause I listened only to songs that felt “somewhat relatable”
yeah all of that understanding makes me want to write an essay but i kind of don’t care and I’m too lazy to do that!
so yeah this is how I “cured” my compulsions, anxiety, depression, irritability and perfectionism. By having fucking adhd and being a massive nerd. because I would hyperfixate on linux, customisation, open source applications, cybersecurity, programming
turns out I’m great at maths since I KNOW HOW to solve the problems
My brain is just too quick to do it step by step so I tend to skip and get lost in my own fuckin notebook 💀
schooling just made me believe I suck at maths and i should actually kms for trying to improve at it /hj /lh
And I suck at my own language. I know a lot of “complicated” words and can deduce what certain words mean (logically) but I have issues adapting my language to my listeners. I either cuss every other word (too comfortable; thanks mom LMFAO)
Or I speak like an university professor. To my peers. And they don’t know what the fuck is going on. And I end up isolating myself because of crippling fear of being misinterpreted. And people think I don’t have a sense of humour whatsoever because I don’t “get” jokes. But I joke a lot and am very sarcastic cause that’s just how I am. God damn it
When were y’all going to tell me not everyone thinks I want to use them and be a bastard overall when I need to ask someone for help. when. were. you.
icb I had to go to paid therapy, feed myself some subliminal messaging, deprive myself of sleep for 48 hours, force myself to talk to my dad about things I don’t understand or scare me, go manic for a week on venlafaxine, my aunt had to die and I had to have a reason not to go to school for 2 days for me to actually acknowledge my emotion instead of rationalising it.
also everyone in school + my therapist thinks I’m still manic and in need of hospitalisation. How do I even begin to explain it’s not that I have superiority complex, and I just realised I’m hella smart, just in a pretty unexpected way
.. because thorough my entire life I never acknowledged it for the sake of being “humble”. bitch it’s not humble it’s the lack of self worth and being someone else’s doormat.
y’all think that if I say “house md and one tumblr post cured me” they’ll let me off the radar?
no honestly I have too much to catch up on (maths, c++, reading in POLISH, and learning German for fun) to actually care about “depressing” things of this world
I mean sure it does sound unhealthy in hindsight
but thing is
this is the first time in my life where I don’t feel hopeless both about present AND the future
and I guess that’s enough for now
I have “a goal” and that’s enough
Later I might catch a job as an actual university professor. Maths or computer science. Biology or physics maybe?
it gives me an excuse to be “eccentric” lol
cause the students are here to learn not to make fun of who I am and focus on that
sure it’s a funny anecdote to mention like “dude my physics teacher is fucking nuts but at least his lectures are interesting”
and that’s all I care about
I get to express myself instead of internalising anything
and the students get to learn
yay and yay
mutual benefit!
yeah anyway fuck I have so much shit to catch up on and I’m so lazy I actually have to reorganise my room and desk so I don’t try to do my homework in bed

. (Yes I was THAT depressed and lazy)
when I do my chores in bed I keep on losing my pens and I’m one minor inconvenience away from doing something I might not particularly want to do

.
yah
thats it I guess
If this post made anyone realise something (“connect some dots”)
congrats and I’m sorry you had to find out this way LMFAO
if not
scroll ahead, not the target audience probably

the formula of REBT, coined by Dr. Albert Ellis in the 1950s, is based on the work of ancient philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius. (sidenote, i'm just getting into Marcus Aurelius, and, ah, his words are gems!). i discovered it through the recommendation of OCD expert Robert Bray. out of all techniques of rewiring cognitive patterns i've used, it has proved most efficient in deconstructing pure o so far!
known as the A-B-C-D-E-F model, its premise is: most of the distress we experience is unnecessary suffering which arises from holding onto irrational beliefs. (i think this differentiates REBT from other action-orientated techniques of therapy, as it doesn't promise to end suffering, but to instead dilute unnecessary suffering). it provides you this model to identify the irrational belief, dispute it, replace it & process.
let's take an example in which i applied REBT!
situation: i want to have an experience by attending a specific event.
adversity: a thought arises; i want it, but what if i am not good enough for it?
belief: if i have this thought, there must be some truth to it. perhaps * i * should not go for it and protect myself from the possibility of rejection.
consequence: my chest contracts, i experience distress & there is the possibility of not going for what i want.
disputation: both the thought of not being good enough and the judgment of the thought as particularly meaningful are irrational beliefs. being "good enough" is a volatile concept which only exists in an even more volatile & subjective scale of comparison that cannot be quantified in reality. a thought is a cognitive process which arises from conditioning and from what we consume and have consumed on a daily basis over years with a degree of randomness; a thought is not a fact which has any inherent meaning other than that which i assign to it. if i have to label or judge my thoughts, per Ellis, it would be more rational to judge them as "effective" or "ineffective" (to one's goal - more on this later).
effective new belief: thoughts and doubt have arisen and i can choose to remain undisturbed by either.
new feelings: relief. self-assurance. there is nothing wrong.

"I know you keep saying you're doing stuff to help your mental health, and I know you try to track your moods and have a routine and stuff but you really need to try harder to not get so stressed about things" bestie when I say I'm trying to help my mental health, yeah I'm doing that stuff, but I'm also:
using DBT techniques to improve my emotional regulation, which takes a lot of energy because I have to focus on taking a step back and doing that while experiencing strong emotions that make that hard
actively unlearning unhealthy coping mechanisms and trying to replace them with healthier reactions to things, which once again requires catching myself doing stuff while experiencing strong emotions that make it harder to think rationally
working through shit like core beliefs to figure out why I act in certain ways and then challenge those beliefs to slowly fix things from the ground up (have you ever dug into core beliefs? it's a great way to end up sobbing for 2 hours straight while half your life suddenly clicks together and makes sense in a way it never had before)
basically improvising exposure therapy for various triggers because I don't have access to actual therapy so I've gotta DIY this shit if I actually want to get better at handling my triggers
having to work through processing years of trauma, abuse, etc, most of which gets brought up randomly and then I have to deal with it whether I'm in a good place to do that or not
and a whole bunch of other exhausting shit I can't remember off the top of my head because I'm brain foggy and have a migraine right now
and I'm having to do all this on top of repeatedly getting so ill I can't keep up with basic chores and experience the kind of symptoms and pain levels people would normally go to the hospital for on a daily basis and just having to try and carry on as normal anyway because I have no other choice, not to mention all the various stressors piling up in the background that I'm having to process and deal with.
"you need to try harder to not get stressed about things" says the person who won't even begin working on their own deeply unhealthy behaviours that negatively effect everyone around them because "that's a lot of work and I don't want to have to do all that"
#personal#thoughts#🍬 post#vent post#posts made on pain meds#had a deeply infuriating conversation earlier and this comment was just one little thing in the middle of that shitshow#but it has really driven home the point that people don't realise that when I say we're doing a lot to manage our mental health#I mean we're having to teach ourselves healthy coping mechanisms and emotional regulation#while in an amount of pain that would have a lot of people in the ER screaming that the staff because they can't regulate shit in that stat#and then also being thrown straight into intensely triggering and stressful situations that we can't get out of and just have to deal with#like yeah actually I've seen how ''normal'' people react to the pain of a dislocated rib#and I know that on a daily basis for the last month I've been in significantly more pain that I get from dislocated ribs#quite frankly it would be perfectly understandable if I just laid on the floor and screamed for several hours a day#but instead I'm criticised if I can't regulate my emotions to the same level as a mentally healthy person who isn't in pain#regardless of how much effort I'm actually putting in#and the fact that it's basically impossible to regulate your emotions properly when you're in this much pain#the fact that I'm still using DBT techniques and taking a step back to figure out how to handle emotions in a healthy way#is quite frankly a fucking miracle but it's still gonna get treated like I'm doing the bare minimum

so i was reading a bunch of star wars fanfic (i have not actually watched star wars yet. shh.) and ruminating about how clearly the Jedi teachings have a serious disconnect between what they ostensibly mean (as a perfectly stable space philosophy based on a perfectly stable nonspace philosphy) and how they are presented, definitely irl (i.e. a number of people being like NO ATTACHMENTS?! NO EMOTIONS?! HOW CAN YOU NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU GOVERN?! HAVE YOU NO COMPASSION?! when i am given to know that is in fact strictly incorrect) and presumably also in-universe because i have a very limited view of what exactly happened in Anakin's head during Everything but popular consensus seems to be that There Was A Disconnect. and also possibly he needed therapy he maybe didn't get, and also possibly that since the Jedi didn't usually take in older initiates, they were legitimately unprepared to raise someone with different fundamental foundational ideas, even notwithstanding his specific circumstances.
*anyway*
then i jumped to reading a youjo senki fanfiction where Tanya was doing the 'i believe strongly in the intensely rational and try not to let myself be ruled by emotions because that's foolish and inefficient, what do you mean i am not always self aware about that' thing. (i have personal interpretations of Tanya but they're neither here nor there for the purposes of this thought.)
and then i made the connection of hey, what if post-life-as-Tanya she got yeeted into star wars? i mean you could also do some neat things with Salaryman getting yeeted directly there without being in youjo senki proper first, idk, but the main point is just... what sort of Jedi would Tanya be? because like her thing about ah yes we must not let emotions rule us, rational behaviour is the only way forward, *is* in direct opposition of any YOU MUST USE EMOTIONS TO FUEL THE DARK SIDE or whatever is going on there, like, that shit is something Tanya would be explicitly philosophically opposed to. (especially if she doesn't have to go full magical doping into combat.)
on the other hand Tanya is... her decisions do not make her seem like an ideal Jedi, to the untrained eye. also while i personally interpet her even as Salaryman to have been neuroatypical as heck and therefore (mood) having a somewhat nonaverage experience with how emotions work, i feel also like there are some that she probably does just... not unpack properly? like, in a way that impedes inner peace and self-understanding or something, idk. which i feel like would be a quiet albatross around any potential Jedi teachings she may or may not absorb?
like i said idk, but mostly it would be interesting to explore the idea of how Tanya would react to getting isekai'd again, now into Star Wars, maybe as a baby Jedi. even notwithstanding how you could use her to fuck up the entire plot of Star Wars in basically any way you see fit, her relationship with the philosophical structure would be interesting to explore. also there are many ways you could append Being X to that superstructure, or, like, unappend him, and I think that would be neat.

bpd in rules
something i want to talk about in regards to rules is to dig a little deeper into the inspiration for george’s behaviour via bpd symptoms. it might read kind of weird throughout the fic that george is in love with sapnap and dream yet the feelings are so unbalanced and he seems to process his love for sapnap a lot easier than his love for dream.
this is because a core element of the mental illness symptoms in rules is george having favourite person symptoms which is a bpd trait where essentially all of ur emotional stability and self worth is determined by the attention and affection u get from ur favourite person.
fps arent always romantic interests/partners, they can be friends or a family member or even a teacher who u really admire. balancing fp symptoms for one partner and normal love for another is really difficult, which is one of the reasons george seems to ‘forget’ about dream a lot. he’s simply not on his radar because sapnap is taking over his whole brain.
the withdrawals mentioned are a real phenomenon of bpd. going without one’s fp especially after a break up (or similar separation; in this case sapnap going back to florida after the uk trip) there’s physical symptoms of loss as well as mental anguish. lots of distress and ur brain chemicals going all out of whack because u literally depend on them for stability and self-worth. it can be dangerous without proper boundaries which is evident in the fic lol. the lack of proper boundaries within this dynamic like, the whole fic.
the issue is that george's bpd traits in the fic are completely unknown to anyone in the relationship, no one knows why he feels this way he's just batshit crazy and the only way he knows how to deal with it is taking control of the situation by adding rules (his bpd is comorbid with autism which could be like a whole other rant. but in this case i'll just mention it to highlight his need for self-imposed structure and routine.) thats another reason why he bumps heads with dream so much, he's got different ideas for their relationship and george is stuck in his ways and struggles to bend to other's whims and compromise.
so even though it seems very georgenap heavy i hope that as the fic progresses people can pick up that george loves dream very much, as evidenced by the line with sapnap where he tells him they're in the same spot on his mental podium. despite the fp symptoms he's rational enough to know that dream and sapnap are both his partners and he loves both of them, it's just his thoughts and behaviours that are warped. his feelings are set in stone and he's aware of them. (there's thing thing in cognitive behavioural therapy that's a triangle of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours that all feed into each other, and rules is an example of negative thought patterns effecting behaviours which effect feelings; causing dissonance)
now i'm not a therapist or even a psych student this fic was a lot of projection of stuff i've got rolling around in my brain, but ive been told so far that's its a reasonable portrayal of those comorbidities so i figured i'd delve more into my personal perception of it and my intent with the fic, even though i suppose the whole point of art is that my intent doesn't matter... just stuff to think about if u enjoyed the fic!

Hello! So - you said you wanted to be told how to feel about Mark having an affair and the truth is nobody can tell you that, but I can tell you how *I* feel and hopefully that will help and it isn’t overstepping or anything.
I haven’t read the book but I listened to the original Audible thing that became the book and certainly in that text he never excuses it, never gives any indication that he thinks it was anything other than a heinous thing to get into, and the hurt he caused is and always will be a gigantic source of regret and self reproach.
We can never know everything about somebody. But for me, his honesty and pragmatism are what mattered; there is no excusing infidelity, and so he doesn’t try to, and it’s very much up to him and his family to have feelings on, and from what it seems, they have worked through it.
For me generally, I am able to easily forgive indiscretions or mistakes when someone has obvious regret for the impact of those mistakes. Of course he doesn’t regret being in love, or having happiness, but it’s not straightforward. Things rarely are.
You’re allowed to feel disappointed, but it doesn’t need to be hatred, unless it helps you. And without wishing to massively overstep, if you massively struggle to find the balance between those things, please could I suggest taking a look at some principles of dialectic behaviour therapy to maybe help you to identify where two opposing things can be equally true, and to help you sit more comfortably in that space without needing to split to All Positive or All Negative, which can be a distressingly impossible task sometimes and it sounds like that sense of “which stance is correct” might be the main conflict you’re feeling right now.
Anyway sending you warmth and gentleness, and hope you find your path through this, because I can tell how upsetting it is to you and I do really understand.
ily and i love this /p
it’s not necessarily that i’m trash at distinguishing emotions, but that i resent feeling upset about it at all, because he’s been important to me and it feels now that knowing this is sort of,, taking him ? i feel Different and i didn’t sign up for it /lh
anyway. i really appreciate this. been trying to rationalize it (which isn’t the answer) all night. and i’m so shit at forgiving anyone, i hold grudges for my friend with amnesia because I Never Forget /lh
(also, “unless it helps you” WARMS MY HEART /g)

“He should never forget that the world exists because its opposites are balanced. So the rational is balanced by the irrational, and the intended by the given.” [Jung „Archetypes“, p. 92]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
run-of-the-mill: "(blaaa blaaaa blaaaaa) and what are you doing this summer?"
Thinking to myself: "Thank you for asking, I'm on a never-ending hike and I am glad that I met Jung as a relatively new companion, as our life-paths are sometimes bringing fateful encounters together. We're meeting my shadows, the shadows of my parents and I am collecting my dream material for a better awareness of what tickles my subconscious. When you work on your mental health, there are no seasons, but one forging process- a continuous healing and promoting the individuation process of becoming more and more psychologically and spiritually mature."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a never-ending journey of self-contemplation, old wounds are torn open and new recognitions are trickling the hard gained petite self-confidence. As a shraddered sponge, there is a huge striving for the illusionistic wish for inner unity and stoic calm. Several time axes crossing the dreamer and tearing him apart from the mercy of the compression of the space-time-continuum. Sometimes emotions are like waves of magma, firing on your inner shelter, refilling it with mourning kissed by great anger.
And when the day sinks into darkness and the humming skull is placed to rest, thousands of lights flicker like fireworks and the paralyzed body falls into eternal patterns, fractals of inner feedback loops, creating itself by repeating over and over again. Nearly every night, a dream with messages, with tasks and oracles, which are took and given inmidst the rushing of the often dystopian dream scene.
If we want to understand the world better, we must start with us, as the Delphic imperative “Know Thyself!” reminds.
As recognition and senses are fallacious, it is necessary to dive into the inner-self and analyse, where those projections and behaviour-patterns come from. When we unmask ourselves, we will maybe find deep disappointment and want to overcome this by inpatient suppressing or forgetting. There a different forms of forgetting, ‘normal forgetting’ and Freud's: ‘Unpleasant-memories-that-one-is-only-too-happy-to-lose-forgetting’ and my favourite: ‘Forgetting-out-of-pride’:
“I have done this“, says my memory. „I can’t have done this“, says my pride and keeps being inexorable. Finally – the memory gives in. [Nietzsche]
Tumblr media
This fight of pride and memory is one of the most tormenting struggles. But without repetition of traumatic or otherwise moving bad experience, we can not take the autonomy of this happening and its influence on our mental health. In my family environment and in most Oriental ‘pedagogy’ (authoritarian, strict and respect means fear), it is compared to a betrayal, when talking about events in the family with ‘strangers’ (long-term-partners included). So it feels like a double breakthrough, when dealing with psychology: The parental dogma of secrecy is enthroned, when the uncomfortable truth is expressed and the sharp and stringent separation of white and black is lifted, for a deeper and multifaceted individual reality of life. Every person, has its own ability to perceive their most adequate way for healing. In my point of view, finding the right form of therapy, is also connected with a good self-understanding. Nevertheless the risk of interminable or trauma-reinforcing therapy is not excluded, as every new gain of insight, can also unbalance the temporary soul arrangement. A worry of mine is, that medical diagnosis are too much labelling and creating a complex of victimhood and this can become a part of a person’s identity. But as we learn bad behaviour, we can also train to unlearn it again. Psychological methods should be part of the primary standard curriculum, not for making fun in analysing the other, but for comprehend the own motifs and intentions to retrace the forces of our action or passivity. In most schools, pupils learn about Freud and his Triebtheorie and the subconsciousness is banned as an archaic relict, with fatal consequences for our mental health. A therapy should help to face everyday problems better, to have no fears of difficulties and accept risks as possibilities to grow. If we dive into our self, we can trace our fears and unveil their roots, sometimes finding them sprouted decades ago, handed over as inherited trauma. The dream speaks to us, the pointe of the events is a message from our conscious. Contents of a complementary and compensatory nature, have the function to compensate for disturbances in mental balance. Dream’s language is extraordinary:
“[dream language] mediates between the form in which we consciously express ourselves and a more primitive, colourful, pictorial and concrete mode of expression, in short, a language that appeals more directly to feeling and emotions. Such language is necessary to bring certain truths out of their cultural state (where they are completely ineffective) and into a form in which they hit the nail on the head." [T 29]
If we want to analyse and understand the meanings of the symbols occurring in dreams, we have to be aware of the general anthropologic developments and the history of humankind. Symbol have undergone many transformations and even more or less conscious processes of refinement and in this way have become the représentations collectives of civilized society. They have largely retained their original numinosity and function in a negative and positive sense as prejudices with which the psychologist must seriously take into account. So we must understand the historical and epistemological impact of the way we see the world, as we are part of the creation and the creator of our percieved world. Also we should not underestimate the subconsciousness, the consciousness is rather easily subject to the unconscious influence of the collective psyche. Karl Jung and his psychological methods and researches are a comprehensive scientific work, showing how the individuals sight is part of the collective sight and how the world, and therefore us, just exists, because its opposites are balanced. It is not constructive to ban negative feelings into the subconscious, as they want to be recognized, they will enter the light as a symptom. More important is it, to be aware of the background of the occurrence and to find the measure for evaluation from a causal point of view.
“It is not important, that we don’t understand the dream at first place, it is more important, that the dream understands us.”
________________________________________________________ Since Juli 2023 I am reading for the most part, books of Jung, the examples and case studies, the historical evidences and alchemical comparisons, are also an exciting gain for general understanding. Next to my hand-written notes, I have a word-data of +30 pages and because of lacking time and energy capacity, I just want to share the first seven pages in German:
E. v. Hartmann: Er gilt auch als „der Philosoph des Unbewussten- Werk „Philosophie des Unbewussten“ zwei verschiedene Denkweisen (Rationalismus und Irrationalismus zusammenzufĂŒhren, indem er die zentrale Rolle des Unbewussten betonte;
Einfluss auf Tiefenpsychologen Freud & Jung; R. Steiner + im schriftlichen Austausch. UNTERSCHIEDE IN BEGRIFFSBESTIMMUNG
Freud: Das Unterbewusste als Zustand verdrĂ€ngter oder vergessener Inhalte, daher ausschließlich persönlicher Natur; SpĂ€tere Differenzierung durch Unterscheidung in Instinktpsyche „Es“ und teils bewusste u. unbewusst (verdrĂ€ngte) Kollektivbewusstsein als „Über-Ich“ Unterteilung der Psyche in drei Bereiche: -Das Bewusstsein oder die Wahrnehmung nach außen und innen;
– das Vorbewusstsein oder die Erinnerungen, die nicht von selbst ins Bewusstsein gelangen, aber jederzeit ins Bewusstsein gerufen werden können;

Affektiv extravertiert – Affektiv introvertiert
Sensitiv extravertiert – Sensitiv introvertiert
Intuitiv extravertiert – Intuitiv introvertiert

I. Persönliche Unbewusste Vergessenes, VerdrĂ€ngtes, unterschwellig Wahrgenommenes, Gedachtes und GefĂŒhltes aller Art II.
Individuation Modell der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung bis zum Alter – die Begegnung mit der Gestalt des „Seelenbildes“ > anima beim Mann, animus bei Frau – komplementĂ€r-geschlechtlicher Anteil der Psyche;

Paul Rodin [A 170ff]
Keine scharfen Abgrenzungen ≠ Keine psychische IdentitĂ€t oder ïżœïżœïżœparticipation mystique“
Fringe of Consciousness [William James] ≠ Misstrauen gg Dinge unterhalb der Bewusstseinsschwelle Phantasien, Visionen, Prophezeiungen

)“ [A 101]

a) Hypertrophie des MĂŒtterlichen VerstĂ€rkung aller weiblichen Instinkte, bsd.
b) Übersteigerung des Eros Ersatz fĂŒr ausgeschlöschten Mutterinstinkt ein ĂŒbersteigerter Eros; Unbewusstes InzestverhĂ€ltnis mit dem Vater; Liebe fĂŒr schwĂ€rmerische und sensationelle Beziehungen um ihrer selbst willen; Interesse an verheirateten MĂ€nner (oft trĂ€ger Typus, Animaprojektion), Hauptzweck: Ehe stören; Zweck erreicht, sinkt das Interesse aufgrund fehlendem Mutterinstinkt; Bemerkenswerte Unbewusstheit fĂŒr Tun und Treiben [A 86f] c) IdentitĂ€t mit der Mutter Projektion der eigenen Persönlichkeit auf Mutter; Maske der vollkommenen LoyalitĂ€t, Ergebenheit-> Wandelt sich zur Kontrolle ĂŒber die Mutter; Trotz Schattendasein und innerer Leehrheit, begehrt „Vor allem sind sie dermaßen leer, dass ein Mann schlechterdings alles in ihnen vermuten kann“, denn weibliche Unbestimmtheit als GegenstĂŒck zur mĂ€nnlichen Bestimmtheit und Eindeutigkeit d) Abwehr gegen die Mutter Weder eine Steigung noch LĂ€hmung der weiblichen Instinkte, mehr oder weniger eine Abwehr gegen die Übermacht der Mutter; Einerseits Faszination, die nicht fĂŒr Identifikation wird, andererseits Steigerung des Eros, ohne eifersĂŒchtigen Widerstand gegen die Mutter; Da Instinkte eine Abwehr gegen Mutter bilden, selbst ungeschickt sich ein Leben aufzubauen; Mit Verstandesentwicklung = Hervortreten mĂ€nnlicher EigentĂŒmlichkeiten „Aus Abwehr gegen die Mutter ergibt sich gelegentlich eine spontane Entwicklung des Verstandes zum Zwecke der Herstellung einer SphĂ€re, in der die Mutter nicht vorkommt. Diese Entwicklung erfolgt aus eigenen BedĂŒrfnissen und nicht etwa zu Ehren eines Mannes, dem man imponieren oder geistige Kameradschaft vorspiegeln möchte. Sie soll dazu dienen, die Macht der Mutter durch intellektuelle Kritik und ĂŒberlegenes Wissen zu brechen oder um ihr alle Dummheiten, logischen Fehler und BildungslĂŒcken vorrechnen zu können.“;
Die Psychologischen Aspekte des Mutterarchetypus [A 75 – 107]
Mutterarchetypus und sein Einfluss auf andere Figuren:
puer aeternus
Kollektive Schattenfigur + Summierung aller individuellen inferioren Charaktereigenschaften
]
Ganzmacher (
) Zu Formwandlungen fĂ€hig.“ >> Einheit und Vielheit des Kindsmotivs „Gestaltwandel der Götter“ [nach Ziegler]
