Why do you ship inhun? Does the ship make sense? I don't kinda see it but I guess there is something between them, I'd really like to know your thoughts about it

Hmm. Interesting question. I do think they “make sense” in a shippable way.

Note that if you’re not into not-entirely-sane ships then it might not appeal to you. However, I can try to answer what appeals to me. I’ll try to put screen caps or links but ngl I’m not gonna try hunting down all of it. Here’s the manifesto:

1. The narrative casting them as character foils

So each character in the show often not only represent themselves, but to some extent the show’s themes. Since before Gi-hun becomes a victor, he is shown to be discongruent with the nature of the games. The first “true” meeting between In-ho and Gi-hun happens to be at this point in S1:

Mind you when this occurs, it’s after the gamemakers deliberately starve the players to incite violence between them. Deoksu/101 just killed a man. This outcome is exactly desired.

In a way this is a microcosm of the rest of their ideological struggle — that being whether or not humans are inherently selfish and cruel.

We later see the theme again during the last fight scene, when Gi-hun reaches his hand out to Sang-woo. Not only is this a moment of ultimate compassion, but for In-ho who we see is an avid lover of the arts. What else does this resemble?

The painting, The Creation of Adam. Aka the creation of man. (Stick with me on this, I promise I’ll explain).

Notice that this shot not only resembles the painting on a superficial level but in spirit. Adam is in repose and God is the one who reaches out, the one making the most effort to make a connection. In-ho’s face isn’t visible but imagine how he, looking down on it, feels at the very moment:

It’s giving new religion. Later on, In-ho will say something along these lines:

Race horses. And yet, besides his brother, at this point Gi-hun is the very first person In-ho takes his mask off for, something he does not do for even the VIPs. This scene also comes after he kills a guard because “when they find out who you are, you die.”

This treatment marks In-ho’s transition into seeing Gi-hun as his only equal (and yes, In-ho is arrogant that’s kind of his appeal, I don’t believe he thinks that highly of the VIPs either).

Another aspect is that in their final scene at Il-nam’s death bed, they are kind of marked at the inheritors of Il-nam’s system.

Gi-hun leaves Il-nam to witness his one failure. In-ho closes Il-Nam’s eyes.

So it’s the end of S1. We don’t know a lot about In-ho. However we can assume a few things. Both he and Gi-hun are both victors and victims of the oppressive system. Both of them went through anguish after their victory (In-ho’s is mostly inferred, but there’s a deleted scene paralleling Gi-hun’s). Both of them failed to save what mattered the most. Both of them can’t move on from the games and returned. They both abandoned everything in their life for this pursuit.

In a way, there is no other person in the world than can understand them more than the other.

And here is where the character foil aspect comes in. Despite their similarities, their character arcs are the opposite. Gi-hun at the beginning was kind but flawed, an impulsive gambler who could steal money from his mother and disappointed his daughter at many turns. In-ho seemingly was a well-loved, upright citizen who made sacrifices for his family.

And yet, of the two the one who became cruel and heartless was In-ho. The one who became more self-less and compassionate was Gi-hun.

How does In-ho react to meeting his polar opposite? It could easily be hatred or disdain. Instead it’s well, my next point.

2. In-ho’s subtextual obsession with Gi-hun

Season 2 within the games is when most of us really saw the ship’s potential but there are many hints beforehand.

I and others have made some posts about In-ho’s wildly inappropriate actions towards Gi-hun even in S1. Why does he have to stuff the bank card in Gi-hun’s mouth, why does he send the invitation through a bouquet of flowers (actually he sends this invitation twice), why does he decide to physically be there when meeting Gi-hun in a limo on his birthday? A day, mind you, that he needs to be prepping for the games. In-ho doesn’t have to be there, he literally talks to Gi-hun through a speaker he could be in a nice hotel room. Somehow, it’s important for him to be there.

Can this be read as anything but a fixation?

Even when he joins the game his sole focus is on Gi-hun. He makes a concerted effort for Gi-hun to like him (playing hero, baring his true wounds, defending him from the ire of other players, even coming up with an flimsy excuse because he slipped up and called Gi-hun by his name). If he wanted to torture Gi-hun, he could easily turn the players against him. According to the director, his goal is:

But in front of our eyes he does shit like this:

He even bullies his guards:

Does that look like a hit to you 😭 I dare anyone to say that a different player would have passed. Especially when In-ho interceded in the first place.

And the looks. so many looks. You’re not behind a camera anymore, In-ho. Gi-hun can see you.

The one that makes me laugh the most is in the last episode of S2. Gi-hun is stressed about the vote, trying to come up with a plan, and In-ho is staring so hard he’s not even blinking, to the point where Gi-hun has to look at him.

And then again. Gi-hun is explaining about the control room upstairs. Meanwhile, In-ho:

He doesn’t even glance up. He just stares at Gi-hun until Gi-hun finally looks at him. Honestly this isn’t even all of them but I don’t have everything saved.

And the ending. Honestly this part is a bit heartwrenching and I think a few of us fans ignore it (I do too), but I’m trying to contextualize canon here. It’s interesting that despite how dangerous Gi-hun is – causing the disruption of the game, killing guards, and aiming to end the games on the whole – In-ho does not kill him. He has plenty of opportunities to. He even shoots his own guards to keep Gi-hun alive (despite Gi-hun in that moment running the rebellion). But he shoots Jung-bae instead and gives Gi-hun this last lingering glance.

Arguably, you can say In-ho does all this because he is sadistic. However, if that were the sole reason, then he has 400+ people he could similarly torture every year. Hell, he could have joined the games any year he wanted, too.

If it’s just an ideological struggle, then Gi-hun lost when he decided to sacrifice the X players for the greater good. Then, we are left to wonder what else he can want with Gi-hun that he has kept him alive.

The fact that the motivations are never stated and are subtext adds a layer to how fans are free to interpret it. Lots of kindling for our fire.

(I’m not necessarily planning to prove if it’s canon in this part, it’s just a treatise on why we see their potential due to this subtext).

3. Gi-hun’s reciprocity

I think if it were just a one-sided fascinating then there would still be shippers but simply not as much. The part that hits with Inhun is that In-ho’s efforts are not necessarily “unrequited.”

In the beginning of Season 2, Gi-hun has no one. He had been isolated for three years. He has no friends. He has no home. Consider this heartwrenching shot:

Gi-hun’s on the phone, calling the only person in the world he has a connection to, and he can’t even say a word to her.

Even before this, he was largely unappreciated. His mother was disappointed in him. His ex-wife resents him. Jung-bae his friend did not help him in his time of need. Sae-byeok was only in his life for a few days, but she was rude to him for a good part of that. Sang-woo – well Sang-woo is complicated. I don’t think he meant everything he said in the fight before the end, but I do think Gi-hun is the last person on earth he wants to meet after his failures. No one really talks to him kindly besides Ali which is more of polite friendliness than looking after him.

So as a #1 Gi-hun fan, it’s really nice to see someone just genuinely seem to want Gi-hun there? Not as a last resort or as an alternative, but the first pick (in a twisted way).

And Gi-hun is so receptive to it? I made a post about this before, but Gihun is starved for affection and I don’t think all that used to being treated gently. Despite knowing In-ho for a short time, he seems so. He just kind of… opens like a flower?

The first time he laughs in this season is over In-ho’s corny last name joke.

But also the moment in mingle where Gi-hun is so worried about In-ho, Jung-bae has to drag him into a room before the timer runs out. He wanted to risk it all I tell you.

And then, when everyone is calling out to him, In-ho only calls out for Gi-hun’s attention. Literally he couldn’t care about the others. He bee-lines to Gi-hun.

Or how he looks when In-ho shoots the guard for him:

Look at his face, and In-ho’s face when he gives In-ho the gun. They’re going to kill me.

4. The versatility

Finally, this is more of a meta point but it’s kind of fun that this ship doesn’t always have to be that serious? We can go from writing about deep at times darker themes of obsession and manipulation and whatnot and then turn around and clown on them for being total losers with a crush (affectionate). Usually, it’s the same person doing it. Like me in this essay. We can also just make AUs with no squid games and still have the freedom with keep the parts we like (be it obsession or devotion or a mutual understanding) and toss out the rest, and they still make sense. They just always make sense (to me).

Honestly there are stuff I had leave out because it would just maybe at tad too long-winded (as if I didn’t talk your ear off lmao).

Again, this is not an argument on whether it’s canon or not, it’s just an explanation of fanon perspective.

happy birthday, sabo! this is a completely unplanned piece, especially when i'm working on a different wip... but it's sabo's special day in my country and i wanted to write something for it. title comes from the miles davis album of the same name; it suits the flame emperor methinks. also the new bday art is 10/10

Blue is supposed to evoke feelings of calm and serenity when you look at it. Right now, the blue makes you sad.

It's quiet in the Revolutionary base and Sabo has been unable to participate in the day's activities. On yours and Koala's insistence, actually. A three day coma is more than enough reason to bench Sabo for the rest of the day now that he is awake. Rest is all he needs and you've sat at his bedside dutifully to make sure he complies with your commands.

It still pulls at your heartstrings to see him so stagnant, like an ocean with no tide.

"You don't have to keep babysitting me," Sabo insists, smiling lightly as he notices your mood. "I'll stay put."

"No," you shake your head, readjusting your hands resting on your lap. "If I don't do this much, you'll just get up and train. You've always been stubborn like that, that's why we're always scolding you." He's been the recipient of more than enough scoldings, you're sure nearly every revolutionary has scolded Sabo about something at least once. No, no, at least thrice.

Even at the risk of scoldings, Sabo only ever listens to Sabo.

Mostly.

He tends to listen to you ー and you suppose he'll listen to Dragon too. You feel a surge of affection for Sabo and his soft blond curls and his deep blue eyes. You smile something saccharine, "besides, Iva'll be bringing us dinner soon. So I'm staying right here."

"There's no winning with you," Sabo relents with a light sigh.

You grin widely, eyes sparkling and crinkling at the corners, "no there isn't."

The sound pulls light chuckles from your partner much to your relief.

He hasn't not been smiling since he's awoken. No, he certainly has been smiling. The smiles never reach his eyes, however. You are more than aware that Sabo is trying his best for you, for everyone who cares for him, to be his strong self. Your hands clench into tight fists. He's trying so hard and yet…

You picture Monkey D. Luffy, straw hat pressed against his chest and a 3D2Y written down his arm.

You picture Portgas D. Ace's corpse plastered across the World Economic Journal for all to see, like a deer being mounted on a wall. (Try as you might to push it away, you still hear Sabo's wailing; his long forgotten memories swarming his brain and the realization one of his brothers has been lost forever.)

What do you do when you remember you have brothers when you are forced to see the body of one in the newspaper? What do you do if the other is still alive but you have no idea where he could be in this large world?

You aren't sure where to begin even trying to comfort him when you know when no one else is looking, Sabo is. Searching for any broadcasts of the Summit War of Marineford, searching for any glimpse he has of his brothers. Watching the events that transpired when it all went wrong.

(You had to pretend you didn't hear choked sobs and hiccups from the other side of the door when you came to bring him breakfast.)

You cup Sabo's hand in both of yours, "what are your brothers like?" You finally bring yourself to ask. It had been hard to when the wound on Sabo's mind and heart were still fresh. Remember all the good about them. Remember them when they were both alive and you were all together. You'll be here to wipe the tears if they come again.

The corner of his lips quirk into a smiles. "Luffy is a huge crybaby," the blond pauses for a moment. "Well, he was. And he'd follow us everywhere even if he wasn't the best fighting, running… there was a lot of things he sucked at. But he always kept following us," Sabo's blue eyes are warm and miles away from Baltigo, lost in his memories. "And Ace…" a look of pain flashes over him, brows knit and eyes darkening. You squeeze a tanned hand and Sabo squeezes back, gently, thumb caressing the back of your hand. He smiles appreciatively. "Ace was a hot-head, it makes sense he ate the Flame Flame Fruit."

"Hack always told Iva that he was sure you were a naughty child," you tease. It was a constant snip he had; swearing the boy made his hair turn white. Never mind the fact his blue hair had already been graying by the time Sabo was placed with the other children raised by the Revolutionaries. "That boy is going to make me die from worry and frustration before he turns 18!"

"I'd say Ace was the naughtiest but," Sabo chuckles, shoulders moving along with the sweet sound. "Hack was right about that," he concedes when the laughter passes. "We were definitely bad; it stressed Dadan to no end. She was the one who took care of us," Sabo quickly explains, painting a picture of a tall black woman with coily orange hair nearly as long. "It's a wonder she never kicked us out as much as grief as we gave her," he laments with a sigh but his lips are still curled into a smile. "You know Ace and I used to rob thugs in the slums? We wanted to gather pirate savings."

You snort and Sabo laughs in unison at your reaction, "pirate savings?"

"Pirates and savings don't belong in the same sentence, I've come to find out," your partner snickers at the ridiculous notion of children too young to know any better. "I wonder if they ever ended up using it."

He tells you story after story about his brothers.

Happy and fun stories, there was seldom a time he ever felt sad with his brothers by his side. It was a family made with patchwork that didn't match but it was the family Sabo chose and it was his. Headstrong Ace with a sharp tongue who led the charge, sweet Luffy who followed them anywhere, Dadan whose bark was worse than her bite and a plethora of bandits. Even the Hero of the Marines had a few honorable mentions, very strict and determined to make the boys marines.

A strange but tightknit family that worked despite its oddities.

Quiet sweeps over you both and Sabo looks out the window at the setting sky. It's beautiful if not a tad sad, your heart clenches. It blazes vibrant shades of vermilion and indigo, sweeping gold lining the clouds. Despite how it resists, soon the shroud of the night will come and blue will reign supreme. Beautiful, quiet blue, just as melancholic.

"Luffy's alright," Sabo suddenly affirms, squeezing your hand once more. It never ceases to awe you how gently Sabo touches you when you know the full extent of his strength. "He's alright," he says once more, never taking his gaze from the window. "You'll like him when you get to meet him. And Luffy, well, he likes everybody. You have nothing to worry about. I don't know the kind of person he's become but I know that much hasn't changed. That kid can befriend anybody."

Gingerly you press a kiss against the junction between his jaw and neck, "I know we'll get along just fine," you nod in agreement, pressing your forehead against his cheek. "He's your little brother, after all."

"Yeah," Sabo murmurs, leaning against the crown of your head. "He's my little brother."

boy do i got a doozy for you guys. i wrote this from a post in december and it's perfect for this so i'm reusing it. i cut half of it off cause it's way too long, so if you're interested it's linked.

When I was younger I got a DS for the first time and I was given a couple of games. The one that really hooked me was Pokémon Diamond, and the Zelda game I was given was Phantom Hourglass.

I tried Zelda, and I distinctly remember breaking pots and carrying around chickens as Toon Link. Then I set out past the village and into the wide world and that’s as far as I got because the monsters started to attack me and my heart sped up and I couldn’t take it. So I ran back to town. Hyped myself up, tried again, and ran back to town to stay there forever.

As a teenager, I gained an amazing friend who did not cower in fear and left the town in all Zelda games and became a super fan. We met through the anime Naruto but soon we shared our other interests. They were the one to tell me that all the Links and Zelda’s are not the same, in fact they’re all different people and not just the same characters in different art styles like I thought all my life. With that mind blowing revelation out of the way, they proceeded to tell me about how they enjoyed stories where the Links met. This didn’t mean as much to me personally at the time and I thought it never would (I was naive).

When we became adults, and my friend got an adult job, they set a trap. For my birthday, they sent me their old switch and a copy of breath of the wild. And of course I had to play it then. I was obligated to if I was sent a whole dang game console and a 60 dollar game.

So I started playing, I left the plateau and I never looked back.

I played that game obsessively. It was the first time in a while I’d actually played a game to the end or at all as I've only watched let's players for years by now. I fell in love with the world and of course I fell in love with Wild.

So I sought him out in other forms. (Therein lies the trap, the elaborate scheme, it all comes back to Linked Universe).

And I know it might be upsetting to some of you, but I did not connect to the other Champions all that much throughout the game. The only characters I got attached to was Wild, our horses, and Beetle.

So I asked for fanfic recommendations from my friend, who is and always will be my Zelda Authority (my 'za if you will). They sent me a couple of fics, one that started with purely BOTW and the next fic went into more LU. I read it, haven’t finished it to this day but I liked it. But again, I wasn’t too attached to the other Champions, but boy was I craving some form of found family and always will. So even though I didn’t know anything about the other Links, I took a crack at LU.

But funnily enough, I didn’t start with the comic. I went straight to AO3 and whenever a new Link was mentioned I would go to Google and search their game, and based their appearance to their game canon. It was at this point I mixed up Hyrule with Warriors because Wars comes from Hyrule Warriors which literally had Hyrule’s name in it??? so based off of Wars’s canon appearance, in my head Hyrule was a big brother type who was taller and broader than most of the others, i was very wrong and very confused. It came to the point that I had to clarify which link was which. And I finally opened up the LU comic for the first time.

I read it so quickly and caught up so soon (in one sitting) that I remember being distraught that I did. But that was what fanfic is for baby.

(Just as an aside, I think I still had problems distinguishing the links while reading LU, I wasn’t sure which one was Sky and which one was Hyrule, and I mixed up Time and Twilight a lot. Four, Wind, and Legend were easy. And of course I knew which one was Wild).

Even then though, I didn’t know these boys well at all. We just all met at a social gathering and we did an icebreaker together, you don’t really get to know people through an ice breaker. So while I read fanfic, a lot of references flew over my head, I didn’t know the nuances of why this character did that, or what this event really meant to them. My friend helped me a lot again but most of my learning was from just reading more and more. This way I learned about what adventures each link had and how it shaped them.

I remember telling my friend that I loved how each of them had so many interesting secrets. What do you mean Four can split into four and also turn bite sized? What do you mean Hyrule has cursed blood, the entire triforce, and can turn into a fairy? What do you mean Legend has been on 6 adventures and can turn into a mermaid??? I loved all of it. It's been fun rereading fics after learning more about the boys since now i understand the nuances based on their histories.

Oh, that's why Four said that to Wild because of his history with Shadow! oh legend's like this because of marin and everything else he's been through! oh, there's so much more meaning in what this link says based on their past!

I loved the concept of successors and predecessors, mentors and bloodlines. The fucked up timeline. I love how each of them have spent time with the others in some way shape or form or been affected by their past iterations actions.

I consumed so much fanfic it became my second most bookmarked fandom on AO3 in almost less than a month.

I absolutely LOVE the Squirtle/Wartortle illustrations by kantaro in Pokemon 151!

The Squirtle jumping so joyfully from the rock into the ocean, the colors are STUNNING! I love the contrast of the Squirtle's aqua blue framed in the vivid orange sky, the soft bit of blue reflecting in its shell and its tail just catching the sun, how little and squishy its body looks as it launches itself towards the water with such tremendous excitement!

The lineless style of the background gives me the feel of a travel poster and I sense the tropical environment around it from the rocks and trees framing the corners, the waterfall splashing with as much energy as the Squirtle!

The layered blues on the surface of the water and the bubbles rising at the corner make me FEEL the liquid rising to meet the Squirtle--I can just feel how the next moment it's going to break through and be immersed in a cool island swim!

And the Wartortle running along the sunset beach, this is somehow everything I always imagined for Wartortle! I adore the way the rich purple melts into the warm red/orange sky, the matching purple clouds and shadows in the foreground, and how the dimming sunlight glows red on Wartortle's deep blues!

I love how the yellow and orange of the sky illuminate the lapping waves, I can just feel the gentle motion of the sea at dusk. The aqua color of the ocean matches Wartortle's ears and tail and sets off the red-orange sand, I just love how the colors are here!

Wartortle looks so round and squishy, I love its happiness as it goes frolicking through the shallows, chasing the bubbles caught in the setting sun! The shine and deep shadow on its shell give it an almost jewel texture like real tortoise shell; I love the silhouetted splash Wartortle leaves as it goes running across the shore. It's so full of energy and delight at the end of a gorgeous day! The colors in these are SO vivid and harmonized and the style is so cute and bursting with energy and joy. I just LOVE it (also Squirtle is my starter)

I don’t get why people feel like the Duolingo owl is threatening, if I ever feel like he is I just get mad at him. I could fight an owl. I don’t know if I’d win, but I don’t think I’d lose (two things that can apparently coexist). I think I’d survive at least and that’s not really winning but also not losing.
