“Does it always feel like that for you?” He asks carefully. “When I’m working?”

“Always? No,” she says. “Just… Sometimes. When I hear you’ve almost died…”

“Right, okay,” he nods. “So, it’s not like…”

“Oh my god,” Shannon realizes. “Eddie, I’m not asking you to quit.”

His face washes with relief. “Oh.”

She gets why he thought that. She can see it clearly. That was always the fight, right? Why did he enlist? Why did he reenlist? Why couldn’t he be there? At home, instead of at work. An argument that had never ended. She had grown to resent his job, the military, so much that she still gets a prickle of annoyance when she sees a soldier romance novel or movie. Not that that’s entirely fair. The army didn’t make him sign up without running it by her. 

“It’s different,” Shannon says. “I know they’re not the same.”

“Okay,” Eddie says. “Okay, good, because I… I really do love this job, Shannon. It’s not just…”

“I know,” she says. “I’m not suggesting you leave. I’m just saying it brought all the same feelings back, when I heard about the well, as when they called me and said your chopper went down.”

He nods a little, eyes downturned. 

“It did for me, too.”

Shannon looks at him, stunned. He never talks about that. Usually gets annoyed when she tries to bring it up. Or at least, he did. Back… Back before. 

“That must have been hard,” she murmurs.

“Yeah,” he says. “It was.”

It’s not a lot, but it’s more than she’s used to. 

“I know you… I know you’re not reckless or someone who tries to get hurt,” Shannon says. “I’m not… That’s not… I guess, just, what if the worst happened?”

“If I died? On shift?” Eddie asks.

“Yeah, or… I guess it’s not even just about at work. I mean, I got hit by a car in May. That could have easily been worse,” she says. 

Eddie’s mouth tightens. “God, I don’t want to think about that.”

“Me neither, but…”

“But we have to, is where you’re going with all this?”

“Yeah,” Shannon agrees. “I think we have to.”

Because one of them could die. Eddie, at work, easily. Either of them, out of work, in some freak accident. Crossing the street… 

“Okay,” Eddie says tightly. “What, uh… What do you want to… To talk about?”

“We should have a plan,” Shannon says. 

“A plan?” Eddie repeats. 

“Yes, a plan,” Shannon says. “Because after feeling sick about the idea of you being gone for an hour, I… I wondered, what the hell would I do?” 

Eddie thinks about this. 

“If I died, I mean… That would be hard, but-”

“Shannon, that wouldn’t be just hard. That would destroy me,” Eddie says, voice deadly serious. “Don’t play that down.”

Shannon is quiet for a second, a little thrown off by the intensity of his words.

“Okay, uh… I just mean… You could literally afford me dying. I can’t afford you dying. And, yes, obviously it would devastate me, too. You know it would. I’m just not sure how I’d keep us going… All three of us, without you.”

Eddie shakes his head. “No, you… You could-”

“No,” she shakes her head. “Not… Not with all the resources Chris needs, Eddie. And babies are so expensive. Medical bills, without your insurance? I couldn’t. I have no education or qualifications-”

“Shannon, I’m-”

“Not your fault,” she cuts him off. “Just the way it went. But, would we survive? Sure. Maybe. Would we thrive… I don’t know. And tell me you think your parents wouldn’t sue for custody.”

“They would,” Eddie agrees. “They totally would. If it’s any consolation, I think they’d sue for custody if you died, too. They don’t trust me anymore.”

“So?” Shannon shrugs. “We need a plan. For if either of us die. Oh, god. If both of us died.”

“Why would both of us die?” Eddie asks. 

“Do you remember the tsunami that nearly killed Buck, Chris, and I?” Shannon asks.

“That’s not going to happen again,” Eddie says. “Right? That’s definitely not a normal thing.”

“Eddie! How many people do you see die tragically every week?” Shannon huffs, slightly exasperated.

Eddie dips his head. “Too many.”

“Too many, right,” Shannon nods. “So let’s just have a plan for the most tragic thing, okay? Because I’ve almost lost you twice.” 

Eddie takes a deep breath. “Okay. Okay, you’re right.”

“Thank you,” Shannon sighs, relieved.

“We should update our wills, and… And if… You know, if I did die, you know Buck would… Buck would help you.”

“Yeah, but it’s not like you and he are married, it’s not-”

“No, I mean he’d want to,” Eddie says. “In either case… I-in any case, he’d want to help with the kids.”

Shannon considers this. He would. She knows Eddie is right. Buck wouldn’t just step out of their lives because Eddie died.

Uhhh, ship bingo thoughts on Maki, Kaito ans Shuichi throuple?

I have so many feelings about the training trio.................... if you've read any of my stuff or seen my art around v3 they are the most Doomed Yuri in the world and I thrive on the pain their relationship has. Maki and Shuichi are Hella trauma bonded post-game and Himiko is their weird daughter. They both had a crush on Kaito and he was their fucking PERSON they live because of him.

…okay i was convinced to read The Greatest Estate Developer and i have THOUGHTS and FEELINGS about it!! Only it’s 6 am and I haven’t slept in like 2 days because Gotta Read Story so not all of them are coherent

First and foremost (not really but for the bit) ORV has already established that the optimal throuple is a Weird Man, his aggressive but protective boyfriend, and an equally Weird Lady. We have Javier and Queen Alicia, both of whom have a deep trust and even respect for our resident Weird Man. Javier has been by his side constantly, watching him change and grow, has seen past his facades, pledging to lay down his life for him, and even learned to take a page from his book. Alicia intuitively understands him better than anyone else, is eager to see him thriving, owes him her life several times over, and is totally DTF. We are set. Also Relatively Normal Lady Siluria is there in the background (but she could be much more)

Also, Javier learned to do a Lloyd!! I’m so proud of my boy! And even as he’s doing it, he’s doing it with a base of absolute sincerity. Truly taking after his Lord in every way, from how they villainously spared people’s lives, extracted compensation from the wealthy, and improved people’s living conditions…in the end, even while acting villainous, all Javier really did was…ask the Heavens to not undo all their hard work and help save the life of his closest friend. He just did it without groveling and owing them a favor.

The same way that, in the end, Lloyd ended up saving a lot of people, even setting them on a better course in life, all while saying “this doesn’t make me a hero, because I only did it for selfish reasons.” Aaaand those reasons are (checks notes) living a life of peace, comfort, and happiness, surrounded by his thriving loved ones in a beautiful city that he personally helped to flourish. He didn’t even imagine fucking off to travel the world or anything! In his wildest fantasies he’s still managing a few things here and there! Javier was right, he has a poor man’s vision of being rich.

Honey…you talk big about aspiring to be a “rich bum” but you don’t even realize how quaint of a dream that really is…work until you save up enough for retirement is. Like. Normal. That’s just a normal thing to do. So what if you want to retire early? You don’t need to work ‘til you’re dead. You’re a nobleman in a feudal society. Not to mention, by this point (ch 167 of the webcomic) you’re put yourself through enough that you more than deserve it. Literally no one (except the Queen and perhaps Javier) would raise a single complaint about it. They’d just give you their well-wishes, saying “makes sense. He’s already done 100 years of work within 10. Lord Lloyd has done enough for us already. We’ll handle things from here.” (Though, at this point, I feel like Javier would appreciate the idea of Lloyd not facing any more life-threatening dangers, he would also be suspicious that Lloyd would end up getting himself into trouble anyway)

It’s just…god…self-sacrificing protagonists who convince themselves that they’re a fundamentally bad person for Wanting Things and handling their affairs in underhanded ways really get to me, especially when their first instinct is to be underhanded precisely because they were burned when they tried to be upright before.

And then the scene with the Jewel of Truth oooohhhhjjjkkh

He received a vision of doom from one of endings, heard from the legendary Dragon King (who apparently knows more about the world then anyone could have guessed) that this things would have his answer, LITERALLY went to Hell and back just to obtain the pieces to BUILD the damn thing, has to fight a whole-ass Angel just to finish it, and when, at long last, it’s completed, what does it say??

“Either you or your best friend have to die. No other way.”

God. It might as well have said “kys lmao”. I can see why he went into shock. All that, and he wasn’t even looking to be done and over with it, he was just looking for a way forward, something he could actually do, anything! And that bastard hunk of rock said “the way forward does not exist.” Just. God. Makes me kind of angry just thinking about it. The fact that THAT was the result of ALL of that effort. The moment Javier hears what that damn rock said it is going to be smashed to smithereens.

‘Cause he’ll make the connection. You know he will. He’s smart enough for that. He’ll hear what the damn rock said and go “ah. So Master Lloyd was preparing to resign himself to death.” And after he smashes the rock he is going to be ROYALLY pissed that Suho would even THINK about harming himself.

And then they’re probably gonna have to stop Javier from making good on his promise to lay down his life for that guy…ugh…they care about each other…

I saw that look of panic when Lloyd thought Javier had vanished for a split second, and we just saw how Javier will take matters (even outside of fights) into his own hands if it means protecting Lloyd. They just…they’re the only ones they can show their true faces to. Javier can be both sharp-tongued and sincere, Lloyd can be both scheming and sincere…heck, not even Queen Alicia has had the chance to see Lloyd actually cry. They care so much…

…to be honest I wanna see one of the “bad endings” be Javier (and Alicia) absolutely fucking shit up because someone killed Lloyd…like…do you know how much you mean to them???

Hello completely random anon whose identity will forever be a mystery!

See, with the way you've phrased this, you've actually opened yourself up to a few options. I'll tell you a little bit about each one and you can tell me which one you want to learn more about first.

Currently unnamed G/T Alenoaheather

Definitely the most detailed AU of the bunch. It's got backstories and character arcs for each of the three. Probably the best way to describe it is Urban fantasy since none of them are (completely) human, but they pretty much live in a modern setting.

It does get dark at times. Think Beastars-adjacent in terms of vibes. Including the murder bits. But it's mostly self-defense or being forced into it, so take that as you will. I will say that it's nowhere near the levels of toxic relationships that something like the Sea Monster AU has. And they do actually improve as people. These three still get drama mind you, but it's from keeping secrets rather than being genuinely manipulative. ...Well. Too manipulative. It does have Alejandro and Heather in it. But it's got fluff moments because fluffy giant/tiny dynamics are precious and must be preserved at all costs.

It's got Alejandro who's a giant-shifter able to grow even larger than most other giant-shifters thank to his Burromuerto heritage. The Burromuertos are a completely upstanding giant-shifter family and definitely don't have any incredibly fucked up family traditions they expect Alejandro to continue.

Noah's a were-mongoose. Werefolk come in a large variety, though mongoose is on the far more uncommon side. Unlike most werefolk, this kid genius actually figured out a way to not completely give into his instincts during full moons. This has absolutely no negative repercussions on his wellbeing.

Heather who's a giant-shifter hybrid unable to grow thanks to her human heritage from her father's side. She's the only one of her siblings unable to grow. She definitely doesn't have a complex about this. But she has managed to find her own way of making herself just as much of a physical threat as her two boyfriends. (Aka the day I take away from Heather's inherent badassery is the day I die.)

Serial Killer AU

It's exactly what it sounds like. With exactly the vibes the name implies. Definitely the darker one. They're just a thriving villain throuple with a body count. It's also mostly Noah-focused so far as I haven't figured out Alejandro or Heather's motivations.

Noah stumbles across a body of a serial killer spree, only to be the first to realize that one serial killer is actually two. Curiosity leads him to investigate...but not for the reasons you'd think.

Originally named The Lords In Black AU because it was originally inspired by me watching an animatic of The Summoning from Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Then it evolved into something far beyond that where the name doesn't seem quite right anymore.

It's got Alenoaheather as the worst teens at school and unashamed about it. ...Until Alejandro goes missing, and nobody else really seems to care. Leaving Heather and Noah to investigate and try their best not to be next.

They fail, but hey, at least they get cool eldritch powers out of it!

This AUs also dark because the premise is them being kidnapped to be used as sacrifices. And it's got plenty of eldritch horror in it. The posts for it are scattered because they ended up going into two separate reblog chains with @total-drama-brainrot and @ur-local-brown-multifandomist. If you look up 'lords in black au' on my blog you should be able to find most of it. I'm going to just centralize it for ease of organization one day. It'll just be. You know. Effort.

Fake Dating Alenoaheather AU

This one's a collab AU between me and @total-drama-brainrot, a person you have never met because you are a completely anonymous anon. Noah gets caught in between Heather and Alejandro's attempts to make the other jealous by each making him pretend to be their boyfriend. Shenanigans and drama ensue. The posts for this are also scattered and tagged on both our blogs, and one day we might make a fic about it. For now, there actually is someone already making a fic about it that you can feel free to read!

I still can't believe two different people decided to start making fic of AUs I helped create. It's wild, and I'm incredibly touched.

some thoughts on the opening ceremony now that i slept on it:

it was slightly too long, and there were moments that were really meant as fillers. not good.

i hope none of the athletes will catch a cold, with all the rain that poured down on paris yesterday...

gojira was the best musical segment <3 it was so cool!! and i am so happy to see the french metal scene being represented like that, considering how thriving it is.

the drag queens were the worst part by far. terribly vulgar (but that's part of the requirements), sexual, and "dancing" (if it can be called like that) nearby children. i don't know who at the cojo thought it would be a good idea to have them onboard but they were terribly wrong. so bad.

the masked flamme-bearer was terribly cool though. the parkour through paris! that was so nice.

most of the musical segments left me pretty cold tbh, but there is a reason why i don't like to french music (which is that i don't like what's offered, apart from the punk/metal scene).

the french cancan was ridiculous, and, worst, out of rhythm. cringe.

you know what else was cringe? the throuple. boring, too.

it was nice to see the focus on notre-dame and the artisans of haute couture (even though it did feel a bit like an ad for lvmh, but as they're sponsoring...)

i didn't care for most of the (break)dancing either, but w/e

the minions were a choice, but then again, w/e

very nice to have opera singers!!! especially the one who sang la marseillaise wrapped in the national flag. that was utterly cool. loved it. (came second in my personal ranking, after gojira)

the ride on the metal horse on la seine was so metal (ahah) cool too. with the archives images of the previous olympics, it was really nice. it was as if a ride through time, as the personification of the olympic games. very cool. i've seen people on twitter saying it was the four horsemen of the apocalypse, which is one way of seeing things, but with the commentary on the france tv direct, i didn't see it at all. nevermind.

tony estanguet gave a very nice speech.

the final relay of the flamme between all the french athletes was so cool!!! i was a bit emotional by then, especially when they light up the vasque. lovely moment. that felt more dedicated to france than some of the "tableaux" of earlier that were more about clichés (the french cancan for example) or to "provoke" (the drag queens. seriously. why???)

céline dion being able to sing was a very nice touch. more moving for her than for me (covering edith piaf on the eiffel tower, like, honestly, cliché... again) but it's a sign her treatment is working, which is a very good thing for the people suffering from the same illness as she is. very nice.

la vasque being in a hot air balloon for the whole duration of the games is a pretty nice touch too.

overall it was better than i thought it would be, but there were some very cringe moments anyway. too much focus on the clichés associated to paris/la france overall as well.

yknow it's really funny — i did not set out to make seph a poly muse. in fact i thought for a while that they were going to be extremely monogamous, just because they're already so hard to develop a romance with & their relationships are so deeply focused and intimate. as someone who isn't poly myself and didn't really understand it at the time, i never thought of those things as meshing well?

but then @tewwor came along and it was over. KJDHKSDJKSDH shoutout to lior/adal and jie/ricochet especially. i very quickly learned that seph actually does very well in, specifically, a throuple in which she's involved with both partners romantically. whether this means metamours or all three being partners w/ each other, it's a type of relationship she THRIVES in.

i don't think seph could be a metamour herself? because even though she isn't at all prone to jealousy, she does have a tendency to distance: it triggers that "cool they're good, i can fucking Bounce because i don't deserve this & they'll still have someone" behavior that she's chronically afflicted with. additionally, relationships involving seph are always so like... intense, and so trust/bond-focused, i feel like it's inevitable they would end up developing a deep relationship with the other partner anyway, which usually leads to feelings from her side.

one of my favorite things to explore in relationships like this is the differences in seph's relationship to each partner. with jie and ricochet, for example: seph and jie's relationship is incredibly volatile. it started out with them trying to kill each other every single time they crossed paths. classic enemies to lovers, one of the types of ships seph gravitates HARD towards.

but with ricochet, i'm noticing they're starting out a lot calmer. it began with both of them being mutually concerned about / caring about jie, and now the feelings are sort of a slow bloom for seph, drawn from the way he looks at her, talks to her, the way he never pushes and always respects her boundaries. their bonding consists of quiet moments and long looks. and then jie & ricochet's relationship has them at each other's throats but in an affectionately bitey way. but then turning around and moving heaven and earth for each other. it's just??? so fun??? i love it???

getting a little bit obsessed with my "cottagecore throuple" here, because the more I think about it, the more disgustingly perfect and idyllic the whole thing is to me.

like... post-game, I like to imagine Shadowheart absolutely thriving. She's a city girl with a deep love for animals, and spotty- to nil memories, most of which are of the worst things to have ever happened in a dank torture-basement: of course a sweet, picturesque forest cottage (so far I like to think that Petyr would call it "The Hovel", even though it's by all means a cozy, nice hunter's lodge) would have her downright giddy, and she deserves every ounce of that happiness ever.

As I imagine it, when not enthusiastically learning all there is to learn about the quasi-self-sustaining life (that she had dropped herself into by shacking up with a literal forest ranger), she spends as much time outside as possible: walks barefoot in the tall grass, stops to smell every flower (and even plants quite a few, just by the vegetables), and lays in the soft underbrush for hours at a time- enjoying the sunlight caressing her face, enjoying a nice novel (and/or a cuddle with Scratch, the cub, or her boyfriend once he sits down for a moment), or just gazing up at the moon and stars in silent worship. She makes friends with every animal that crosses her path, too: SO many potions of animal speaking are consumed, it's absurd. (She's best friends with the chickens. Petyr has to start farming acorn truffles in the basement for her, and that even proves actually very lucrative- in town, that shit sells for like 10-20 gold a pop.)

She'd of course bring home everything that'll let her. Little wildflower bouquets and stuff at first, but also every critter: from juvenile racoons just weaned from their mothers (they look almost like kittens! how cute!), to elderly foxes that just want to curl up in front of the fire and warm their bones somewhere safe for a moment. She's having the time of her goddamn life, she's learning a shitton of life skills she was never taught (finally learning things not meant to make her better at hurting people!), and generally enjoying a life that, while still plagued by remnants of the past (night terrors, perpetrator trauma, loss, grief, pains both suffered and inflicted, all that great stuff), has her feeling actually content with her lot in it.

And with all this, Petyr is... very business as usual, or at least he's trying to pretend that he is. Having someone in what was his space for like 20 years is strange initially, but if there's one thing he's used to, it's adapting. Making things work. (Plus, he's like, happy, or whatever. In love. You know, that sort of rot.)

Then again, he's also used to only having to feed himself with the very little he has, not another (especially another who is inexperienced at this type of thing, and a second another who just... drops by sometimes, always unannounced and unexpected, but never unwelcome), which deep down does have him a bit (a lot) more antsy about not just being the self-appointed guardian of her happiness, but also just... their general survival.

He's keenly aware that winters in the wild are never especially easy, not when you're so far removed from the safety of a community- especially not the way he's used to being alone, without even magic to keep you warm and safe. Usually, he spends most of the year primarily occupied by preparing for winter, and even like that, there have been lean years: years when he got snowed in for tendays, when he did something stupid and all the careful prep went down the shitter, years he had to go hungry and learn to make do with next to nothing.

So he compensates for- (and distracts himself from-) that anxiety by making extra sure that the pantry is stocked to bursting with all the goods there can be, and they often head out into the woods to hunt and forage together- although he's not a great (or even a good) teacher, Shadowheart (usually Shadow, often Heart, lately Jen or Jenny in affection) does make what he used to do out of sheer need, into something also done for fun.

Hunting and foraging are fun now, and soon, the cabinets are overflowing with jars and jars of dry mushrooms, so much homemade deer jerky, jams and jellies and pickles galore... there's mead fermenting, and homemade soap curing before it can be used, firewood stacked to the height of a person... herb bundles, garlic braids, grain corn, and drying peppers are strung up on the rafters like fragrant fairy lights.

Meanwhile, I imagine that Halsin comes and goes as he pleases- not entirely unlike a beloved stray cat. He just shows up one evening as if he had left not tendays, but only a few hours ago, kicks the duff or mud or snow off his boots, and leans his staff into its habitual nook by the door. He sets whatever it is that he brought this time in its appropriate place (be it otherwise unobtainable goods from town, or just a little gift, a treat to enjoy together), and he sinks into the worn-out armchair by the fireplace that was declared his the first time he stayed.

One of the others almost always then strolls by to settle wordlessly on his lap (if not both of them- that poor chair can barely take the combined weight), and just relax as his big, warm fingers slowly work through the knots and ties keeping their hair out of their faces, and, voice rumbling deep in his chest, he tells them all that has happened in Reithwin the past while.

The many smells of dinner and the comforting scent of pipe tobacco mingle with the fragrant herbs and the crackling fire then, and creates something that can only be described as the scent of home.

.............. and then all three just fuck absolute NASTY every day, in every configuration, and on every surface available for the next, oh, month or so.

So how do we go from first introduction to the idea of "3some" / poly + first 3some fantasy to a whole happy and thriving throuple relationship within one leftover episode? 🙈

I have way too many thoughts about these cats tbh. LionBreeze is a ship I love on its own a lot, where I tend to think of them taking some sort of rivals-to-lovers arc. They bond over both sort of feeling like outcasts in their own ways, and are drawn to each other because Breezepelt likes that Lionblaze sees him as worthy, and Lionblaze likes that Breezepelt doesn't seem all that impressed by his power. Kind of a mutual respect born out of mutual disrespect.

With Heathertail in the mix, there's a couple ways I can see it going down. One is born from three separate relationships: LionHeather, LionBreeze, and BreezeHeather all being at varying levels of seriousness, and they sort of slowly meld together. The more fun one to me is having Lionblaze and Breezepelt locked in a romantic rivalry for Heathertail's affection and she decides hey, why do I have to choose? She deserves two boyfriends, and neither of them wants to raise a fuss about it because they assume that will just lead to them being excluded.

I tend to like including some sort of hierarchy in my poly ships, and this is consistent with my notion that Heathertail is absolutely the boss. Part of this for her is getting Lion and Breeze to "play nice" with each other. She realizes that they've got a lot more in common than they realize (she ships it too).

It starts very begrudgingly, like "come on you two, cuddle nice for me." They grumpily share tongues at her behest, among other things. But they grow more fond of each other as well as time goes on, and she stops having to insist that they have some "tom time" together for them to share some intimacy with each other.

I think generally within aforementioned hierachy it goes Heather -> Breeze -> Lion. Partially because I think Lionblaze being at the bottom is funny and partially because I think being in a position that lacks some power is good for him. But to borrow from the previous jainkens ask, I do think there is some room for the occasional inversion where Heathertail has him put Breezepelt in time out, since Breezepelt is going to be fussy even in the best timeline. Also I don't necessarily want to conflate this with "Lionblaze is the bottom." While sometimes true, I think it's more about him focusing on Heathertail's needs, and all else being equal, Breezepelt is the one who takes the lead in their interactions, and Breezepelt tends to get his first pick of, let's say "position" when they three of them are all doing stuff together. Especially since Heather and Breeze live together full time and Lionblaze has to meet up with them to join, it makes sense to me that he'd be on the bottom rung at least.

The thing that really makes the throuple for me is Lionblaze and Breezepelt nuzzling/kissing on opposite sides of Heathertail. And she's absolutely thriving with her skinny feisty boyfriend on one side and he big fluffy boyfriend on the other.

This is so disorganized because I have 7000 thoughts about these cats today 😻
