My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
Character: Lloyd Hansen
Summary: your life with Lloyd is a lot of work. Or rather, he is.
This is one of my birthday drabbles. Thanks again for your input :) Enjoy.
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging ❤️
A birthday drabble for Carpe Noctem
You stare at the small screen of the smart device. The smell of cinnamon fills the kitchen as you stand in wait of the baking desserts. You lean in to get a better view of the news segment. Your ears tweak at the reporter’s words.
‘The sole survivor remains in the ICU with severe burns but healthcare personnel see a full recovery. As for those who passed, the survivor’s parents, they have been interred in the local cemetery and the service brought out hundred.’
They show images of the funeral; flowers, solemn faces, the front of a church.
“Why are you watching that shit?” Lloyd, as always, knows when to barge in.
“Alexa, stop playing,” you command the device and the screen returns to rest, showing the time and weather. “Just the news.”
“I told you not to worry about that idiot.” He grunts as you face him. He tries to cross his arms then puts them straight, shaking out his left. He’s slick with sweat and his workout gear clings to his muscles. “I fucked up. Thought I killed him but the damn cockroach managed to drag himself out. What a pussy. Can’t even save his own parents.”
“Lloyd. You--”
“Yeah, yeah. Oh, mimi, your soft heart.” He leers at you and winks. “Softer body.” He sticks his tongue out and wince. He bends his elbow and rubs it.
“What wrong with your arm?” You sigh.
“Nothing. Old college injury. You know I was varsity, right? Coulda gone national but I made more money... doing something else.”
“Right,” you sniff and go to the oven. You peer through the lit window at the spiral cookies.
“What’s the point of me putting in all this work in the gym when you’re just fattening me up?” He scoffs.
“You don’t have to eat the cookies.” You glance at the time on the small screen above the stove.
“I have a nose and a stomach. I can’t resist.” He shuffles around the kitchen and surprises you as he comes up behind you. “Just like I can’t resist you.”
“The cookies are for the shelter.” You stiffen as he wraps his arms around you and pulls your ass against him. “I told you several times not to touch.”
“Mimi, you’re spending all my money.”
You huff and look around at the spacious kitchen; stacked ovens, a hug marble island, a fridge with a glass door, a whole other fridge for just wine, and every single appliance you might need but have yet to use. You grab his wrists as he squeezes your hips.
“I think you have more than enough. What else am I supposed to do?”
“Have some wine, put on a thong, hop on my dick,” he purrs and rocks you with him, locking his hold on you. “You got your choice. The hot tub, the pool, sauna, hell, sit out in the sun and read one of your Austen joints. Want me to dress up like Darcy? Bit of role play?”
“Stop,” you push on his arms and writhe.
“What’s a matter, mimi? You weren’t so shy last night. Or yesterday afternoon. Or after lunch. Or in the morning.”
You sneer and tear his hands away from your hips. You turn to him and poke his shoulder. He groans and rubs it.
“Ow, you know that’s still healing.”
“I told you to go to a real doctor,” you snip.
“Mimi, they don’t touch me like you do.” He furls his fingers and his throat bobs. He runs his thumbs along his shorts and tugs. “Damn, just the thought—how about a cool down? I just chugged a protein shake, I gotta get it out.”
“No.”
“No?” He tilts his head. “Mommy, please.”
“No, especially if you’re going to pull that.”
You spin as the timer dings and you grab the oven mitts. You shut off the buzzer and take out the cookies. You put the pan on the counter to cool and hang the mitts again.
“Mimi... Lloyd drawls out as he closes in.
You evade him. Keeping a step ahead as you scurry along the island. He pursues and you turn to face him as you round the corner.
“I said no. I’m not in the mood.”
“Why? Because that limp dick is in the hospital--”
“Stop.” You whine and backpedal away from him as his advance continues. “Lloyd, I’m telling you to stop. I have to make a trip downtown to deliver the cookies--”
“Really? You do? Because you don’t leave without me. Remember? Those are the rules.” He gets closer and closer.
You peer around as you feel blindly and walk back on your heels. You pass through the doorway into the front room. You barely dodge the sofa and the little round table next to it.
“Lloyd.”
“Mimi.”
“Leave me alone. I’m telling you.”
“Keep telling me. It's making me hard.” He snickers.
You veer through the next doorway and stumble as he lunges. He pulls back and laughs again. He’s taunting you.
“Oh, I like this game, Mimi.”
“I’m not playing,” you reach to grab the banister as you step towards the stairs.
He takes a deep breath and stops. “Neither am I.”
His smirk sends a chill through you. You freeze at the bottom step and gulp. You look up then back at him. In an instant, you’re barreling up, desperate to get to the top. As your feet slap on the stairs, his treads trail you up calmly.
Shit. This is the last thing you need. No matter what or when, you always manage to provoke him. Every breath, every blink, every word only entices him. It’s tiring. Without a job, without your friends, it feels like your nothing more than toy. Any search for a different purpose just amuses him.
You race down the hall. You have to make a quick decision. You burst into the bathroom and spin to swing the door shut. It bounces back as Lloyd shoves his sneaker between it and the frame. He shoves in after you with a taunting grin.
You stagger back and search for any form of defence. You know it’s pointless. There’s no escape, no fight to be had, but you just want him to let you think for two minutes without mentioning his dick. You grab the bottle of hair spray and aim it at him. You push down and he coughs, waving his hand through the cloud of stickiness.
He swats the aerosol from your hand and grabs your other arm. You whimper as he wrenches you toward him. He turns and pens you in against the floating counter. He tuts down at you as you push on his stomach.
“Oh, mimi,” his eyes flick above you. “That’s a great fucking idea.” He grips your shoulder and twists you around to face the counter. “I’d love to watch.”
He keeps you trapped as you slap a hand on the marble and try to shove him away with the other. He stretches the elastic of his shorts and they fall to his feet. You wriggle as he wraps his arm around you and leans you against the counter.
His other hand snakes under your skirt. One of the many pieces stocked in your closet. None of them fit right. They all flutter a bit too high on your thigh.
“Lloyd,” you beg. “Later. Not—now.”
“Too fucking late. My dick hurts.”
“Stop!” You throw and elbow back into his ribs. He grunts and nuzzles your hair.
“Don’t mess around.” He warns.
He kicks your feet apart and peels your panties down your thighs. The strip of lace strains around your legs. He bends you further as he feels around. He brings his tip down to your cunt and prods you, tapping, and rubbing.
“Mm, I feel you shaking for me, Mommy.”
“Please--” you gasp.
“You don’t gotta beg,” he boats.
“Urgh, get—off!” You bend your arm awkwardly and once more poke at his shoulder. He exclaims but persists.
He lines up as he bares his teeth, hooking his jaw over your shoulder. The anger pulses in his forehead as he glares at your reflection. He snaps his hips and impales you with a growl. You cry out and brace the counter as your legs buckle.
“Ow!” You plead with him in the mirror. Eyes misty, eyes pouting.
His lips curve deeper as he thrusts, jerking your hip bones into the marble. His hand crawls up to your chest and he squeezes your chest with a snarl. He tilts his head and sinks his teeth into your shoulder. He ruts as his eyes blaze back at you from the glass.
His hand snakes down your stomach and delves beneath your skirt. You hide beneath your eyelids as he finds your clit. He flicks over your hood and you spasm. You mewl as he does it again and again. Worse than his strength is his talent at toying with you. Even as you resist, he finds your weak spot and needles away at it.
“Mmm,” he purrs as he unlatches his teeth and kisses up your neck.
His mustache tickles as he pounds against your ass, fingers sliding around your slickness, breath fogging around your chest. Your thighs quiver and your feet arch. You bend forward a little more and he hits just the right spot.
You cum in a ripple of pathetic moans. You’re breathless and weak. You slump onto your elbow and he growls as you open to him completely.
He frames your hips and pumps into you until his motion turns erratic. He groans and grunts, digging his nails through the fabric as he pulls out. He cums down your thigh as you hang off the counter.
He lets out a gurgle and snaps his knuckles against your ass. He moves rigidly as he turns and leans his bare ass on the marble beside you. He rubs your back as you gulp and catch your breath.
You stand up but he stops you from grabbing a tissue to wipe up. He’s shameless as his shorts still cling around one ankle.
“Hey, baby cakes, get my shorts for me? Think I pulled something.”
You scowl at him as he emphatically clutches his side. You sniff and wave him off. You grab a washcloth and wet it under the faucet. You wipe yourself off and toss the balled fabric into the sink.
“Pull your own shorts up,” you sneer.
“I mean it, Mimi, my back’s all sorts of locked up. You got me all bound up.” He gives a pathetic whimper. “Please, take care of me like you always do.”
You shake your head and squat down to grab the shimmering puddle of shorts. This is ridiculous. He lifts his feet to hook it through and as you tug them up his legs, an odd weight hangs in the flimsy fabric. His dick twitches just as you cover it up and let the elastic snap him meanly.
“You feel that, Mimi,” he catches your hand and pulls it back to him. You try to shake him off but can’t. “Am I happy to see you or is that a ring in my pocket?” He brushes your palm over his dick and to his pocket. The shape you felt is sharper than you expect. You look up at him in confusion.
“You didn’t even give me a chance to get on one knee.”
He guides your hand to the top of his pocket and lets go. Your heart thumps as you reach inside and pull out the heart-shaped box. The lid opens like wings from the middle. You reveal the sapphire trimmed diamond inside. Each stone bigger than the next.
You gape at the sparkling cluster. Lloyd chuckles and strokes your cheek. He cups your chin and raises it. As you look at him, he smirks again.
“You take care of me, I take care of you,” he traces his thumb along your lip. “Speaking of, I’m fucking serious about my back. Can I get some help?”

An Overanalysis of Zuko and Food (plus Iroh)
So, I've seen a lot of meta about how Zuko appears skinnier at certain points in the series depending on where he is in his arc. During the worst parts of Zuko's time as a refugee in season two, he seems to have lost a lot of his muscle mass, but towards the end of season two, he's less muscular than season one Zuko but distinctly rounder in the face, as he becomes more adjusted to a more (relatively) normal teenage life, living under a roof and not as a captain of a naval vessel, having access to a stable food source, and letting himself be taken care of by Iroh. At the beginning of season three he's in the palace, with plenty of access to food, but appears much thinner, and several people have made the inference that it was likely Zuko was not eating as well due simply to the anxiety of being back with his abuser.
But I've also noticed several other interesting things that could indicate something about Zuko's relationship to food. In book one, Zuko is built up, he's a military leader, he's trying to fulfill his role as prince of a nation that values strength and power, and there's one scene in particular that shows him not eating, in contrast to Iroh.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b7d921336649f15a04d2fcb8265316b6/7da80659585c265e-be/s540x810/17bbef0bc3b52130b51710184db6166e26a5b733.jpg)
We see Zuko raging over not being able to capture Aang while at dinner, and Iroh asks him if he's going to eat his food, to which he replies that he's going to eat it later, and angrily takes it away from Iroh.
The main purpose of this scene is to contrast Zuko's single-minded determination with regard to his mission with Iroh's hedonism. Even on a military vessel, Iroh is presented as the antithesis of Spartan Fire Nation military culture. Zuko shows clear distaste for this behavior, because he has learned to detest it from his father, and angrily takes the food away from Iroh, saying he's going to "finish it later." And book one Zuko looks like he probably isn't missing any meals. He's jacked, and he's probably eating a lot of protein to keep up that physic. But is he going to sit around enjoying a meal when he's stressed about finding the Avatar? Absolutely not. The food in this scene looks very inviting, steaming hot, but Zuko will eat only when it's necessary to do so, and won't tolerate uncle eating more than his fill.
At the start of book two, Zuko and Iroh are without the trappings of even Zuko's banishment. They've lost everything, and are forced to forage for food, an endeavor that is less than successful. They are fed by Song's family, and I've seen some theorize that Iroh intentionally poisoned himself in order to force Zuko to seek help, which is an interesting theory considering that given stressful and even dire situations, Zuko's inclination seems to be to turn down food more often than not.
When Zuko is later separated from Iroh, we see him contemplate stealing food when faced with starvation, but makes the decision not to steal from a pregnant family.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/16fdb00a18067c06f24d7a543f078bcc/7da80659585c265e-5d/s540x810/ef860567fc1cbba0a0de58d33ed13f2284f704ac.jpg)
Later in season two, Zuko and Iroh are living as refugees in Ba Sing Se. Zuko no longer looks bone thin, and presumably has stable access to food, although not the royal trappings of a prince. He's much more filled out, but appears more round and less lean muscle. We see him visit a restaurant with Jin, and we get a close up of him pushing around his food on the plate to indicate his anxiety about the date.
(I also want to mention here that in the "Going Home Again" comic, which takes place before the start of book three, Mai says that the food in Ba Sing Se is awful and Zuko says it's not so bad once you get used to it.)
Then at the end of book two, when Zuko recovers from his sickness, he immediately is interested in the jook that uncle is making, to Iroh's surprise, who says that Zuko wouldn't like it. Zuko happily eats a bowl despite this.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a5d71baed195a6373b752553d14cfca5/7da80659585c265e-77/s540x810/2c5921ac0543f41102f1472ce5109368fc319168.jpg)
This is meant to show us Zuko's newfound appreciation for life after recovering from spiritual sickness. But it's also interesting when taken in the context of Zuko's previous relationship with food. Iroh assumes that Zuko will not want to eat the jook, but one thing that is interesting is that it's a meal commonly made by adults for children or others recovering from illness. We can infer that Iroh was making the jook for Zuko, despite his assertion that Zuko wouldn't want it. I think this is consistent with how we see Zuko turn down food when he is uncomfortable or anxious, but when he's in a place where he feels safe, he will let himself eat.
Finally, at the start of book three, we see Zuko turn down food when being offered it by servants.
And finally only accepting a hot towel (used to wipe away sweat.) Despite having access to excesses, he's uncomfortable and constantly on edge.
I also have to mention Mai again here, and how Zuko, despite turning down food for himself, offers to get food for Mai, which is meant to show us how Zuko struggles to connect to the world in which Mai belongs. It's worth mentioning also that we see Zuko bring Mai food twice in the beach to try and make her happy (and failing) while eating nothing himself.
We also see Zuko offer Iroh food in prison.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4eb1e8c8efcb5d6dc8d59dd4d3415d49/7da80659585c265e-16/s540x810/ca5b4f4c3ff41ad5b966fef4d7b1a9e9b41d2a5c.jpg)
Zuko says that even though he knows it's not Iroh's favorite, it beats prison food. This actually mirrors Iroh making the jook for Zuko in book two, which Iroh says Zuko does not like, but making it for him anyway. Zuko is trying to return uncle's care for him, but what Iroh really wants is for Zuko to be safe.
At the tail end of book three, Zuko seems to have gained back some of his muscle mass, and appears much more comfortable with the gaang, but he's still shown not indulging when the rest are.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/df8c07b86cf28993779fdf23f2d67fc6/7da80659585c265e-10/s540x810/70176a0990d677bc8efdb74ea695c0451b7574bb.jpg)
The screenshot actually frames him in direct contrast to the rest of the gaang, as Aang's teacher who is strict about him goofing off during training (a callback to season one Zuko who was displeased with Iroh's hedonism). We don't know if Katara had any watermelon juice herself, but she's seen making several "glasses." (Hello, momtara and dadko.)
Anyway, I think Katara the gaang made sure Zuko had enough food and that he was eating, and that he reciprocated by making them tea in return.

DM me if you have access to the attached study: I'd like to read it and it's paywalled.
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital discovered that individuals exhibiting a wide range of long COVID symptoms were twice as likely to have SARS-CoV-2 proteins in their blood compared to those without such symptoms.
A new study suggests that a persistent infection may be the cause of long COVID symptoms in some people. Conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a key institution within the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, the research identified signs of ongoing infection in 43 percent of participants who reported cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, or neurologic symptoms associated with long COVID. These findings were published today (October 9) in Clinical Microbiology and Infection.
“If we can identify a subset of people who have persistent viral symptoms because of a reservoir of virus in the body, we may be able to treat them with antivirals to alleviate their symptoms,” said lead author Zoe Swank, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Advanced Detection Methods and Study Results The study analyzed 1,569 blood samples collected from 706 people, including 392 participants from the National Institutes of Health-supported Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative, who had previously tested positive for a COVID infection. With a highly sensitive test they developed, researchers looked for whole and partial proteins from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They also analyzed data from the participants’ long COVID symptoms, using electronic medical chart information or surveys that were gathered at the same time as the blood samples were taken.
Compared to people who didn’t report long COVID symptoms, those who reported persisting symptoms affecting heart and lung, brain, and musculoskeletal systems many organ systems were approximately twice as likely to have SARS-CoV-2 proteins circulating in their blood. The research team was able to detect the spike protein and other components of the SARS-CoV-2 virus using Simoa, an ultrasensitive test for detecting single molecules. Commonly reported long COVID symptoms included fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain, joint pain, back pain, headache, sleep disturbance, loss of smell or taste, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Specifically, 43% of those with long COVID symptoms affecting three major systems in the body, including cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, and neurologic systems, tested positive for viral proteins within 1 to 14 months of their positive COVID test. But only 21% of those who didn’t report any long COVID symptoms tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 biomarkers in this same period.
It’s possible that a persistent infection explains some – but not all – of the long COVID sufferers’ symptoms. If this is the case, testing and treatment could aid in identifying patients who may benefit from treatments such as antiviral medications.
Multiple Causes of Long COVID One of the questions raised by the study is why more than half of patients with wide-ranging long COVID symptoms tested negative for persistent viral proteins.
“This finding suggests there is likely more than one cause of long COVID,” said David Walt, PhD, a professor of Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Principal Investigator on the study. “For example, another possible cause of long-COVID symptoms could be that the virus harms the immune system, causing immune dysfunction to continue after the virus is cleared.”
Ongoing Research and Future Directions To better understand whether an ongoing infection is behind some people’s long COVID symptoms, Swank, Walt and other researchers are currently conducting follow-up studies. They’re analyzing blood samples and symptom data in larger groups of patients, including people of wide age ranges and those with compromised immune symptoms. This way, they can also see if some people are more likely to have persistent virus in the body.
“There is still a lot that we don’t know about how this virus affects people,” said David C. Goff, M.D., Ph.D., a senior scientific program director for the RECOVER Observational Consortium Steering Committee and director of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH. “These types of studies are critical to help investigators better understand the mechanisms underlying long COVID — which will help bring us closer to identifying the right targets for treatment.”
Goff added that these results also support ongoing efforts to study antiviral treatments.
The SARS-CoV-2 blood test developed by Brigham and Women’s researchers is also currently being used in a national study, called RECOVER-VITAL, that is testing whether an antiviral drug helps patients recover from long COVID. The RECOVER-VITAL trial will test the patients’ blood before and after treatment with an antiviral to see if treatment eliminates persistent viral proteins in the blood.
Potential Viral Persistence in Other Diseases The idea that a virus can stay in the body and cause ongoing symptoms months after an infection isn’t unique to COVID. “Other viruses are associated with similar post-acute syndromes,” said Swank. She noted animal studies have found Ebola and Zika proteins in tissues post-infection, and these viruses have also been associated with post-infection illness.

Do you have the werlyt screenshots? 👀
This is only because I love you, Nonny.
I also took time to transcribe these under the "Keep Reading" cut, cuz this is a lot of text and cannot always be read clearly. These images were taken with my tablet. Errors in said transcript are probably just mine. These are pages 120-121 and 169-170 of Encyclopedia Eorzea volume III. The timeline's a little weird (especially the Gaius to Valens handover), but Werlyt was an Imperial province for over 50 years.
There's also pages specifically about the Weapon project and how the Garleans tried to have a system similar to soul crystals in legatus armor, but they were behind the curve on such magic-technology and so the data's incomplete (as we saw in those fights). If there's interest, I may do a follow up with those pages, but this is long enough and I have FC things to do tonight.

Werlyt
Following in the footsteps of its neighbor across the Ghimlyt Dark, Ala Mhigo, this small nation in the far western reaches of Ilsabard recently liberated itself from the Garlean Empire.
Flag: The flag originally bore the crest of the royal family. However, as their bloodline has long since run dry, and the nation now aspires to become a republic, the interim government has organized a committee to decide on a new design.
Motto: --
Government: Werlyt is presently led by an interim government. After careful deliberation, it has decided the nation will be rebuilt as a republic.
Leader: Talbot Hunte
Ruling Body: The interim government is formed of representatives from several rebel factions that fought against the Garlean Empire.
Racial Distribution:
Ilsabardian Hyur: 80%
Near Eastern Au Ra: 15%
Other: 5%
Religion: Though religion was largely discouraged under Garlean rule, the people of Werlyt were polytheistic, believing in thirteen gods. Their religious practices are said to be largely influenced by the traditions of their western neighbors in Eorzea and its teachings of the Twelve, as well as Corvosi mythology from the east.
Industry:
Livestock: The tending of cattle is a longstanding profession of Werlyt, made possible by its lush, far-reaching pastures. A knack for livestock breeding is evidenced by the myriad varieties of both beef and dairy cattle they raise, the latter including an especially rare breed said to number only one hundred.
Dairy: In tandem with their livestock industry, the people of Werlyt excel in the production of dairy products, including butter, yogurt, and milk-based beverages. They are well known for their high-quality cheeses, which became a mainstay export to Garlemald.
Fishing: The southern edge of Werlyt touches the sea, allowing for a bustling fishing trade in coastal towns. Its many steep cliffs, however, ensure their efforts are focused on but a few major ports.
Mining: In the northern mountain range of Werlyt, one can find four mines wherein copper, zinc, tungsten, and several other rare metals are extracted. The process was refined under Garlean rule with the introduction of magitek, and while the equipment remains, the country wants for the ceruleum to operate it. To that end, Werlyt has begin negotiations with Ul'dah to barter for fuel so they may resume their mining operations.
Beliefs: While the Au Ra who migrated from the Corvos region have ostensibly been welcomed in Werlyt, there yet remains a strong sense of social incohesion in this predominantly Hyuran nation. It remains to be seen if these disparate peoples can overcome their differences to flourish in this burgeoning republic.
Diet: Werlyt is perhaps best known for its stewed dishes made using local beef, dairy, and seafood. The intermingling of native wheat-based cuisines and rice dishes brought by the Au Ra also help distinguish Werlyt cooking. Dairy enthusiasts insist that milk produced in Werlyt is indispensable to strengthening one's muscles when training the body, and it is thought to be high in protein and effective in reducing muscle inflammation.
History
A Contentious Foundation
In ages past, the western reaches of Ilsabard, known today as Werlyt, were home to myriad Hyuran tribes. There was no harmony to be found between them, however--the ceaseless cycle of war and peace was no different than the changing of the seasons. Some brave few tribes thought to flee from this war-torn land, crossing the Ghimlyt Dark to pillage and plunder on Eorzean soil. They would inevitably return home, richer for their efforts, but these ventures westward would come to a halt when the leadership of Anshelm Cotter united Gyr Abania, Ala Mhigo becoming a shield from further incursion.
With dreams of pushing farther west dashed, and the Hyuran tribes growing weary of conflict, Au Ra outlanders hailing from Corvos saw this pall of languor as an opportunity. They formed an alliance with a handful of local tribes, and together they quickly subjugated the territories that would come to be Werlyt. Despite their pivotal role in its formation, however, the Au Ra would not seek the throne of this fledgling kingdom, knowing their alchemical knowledge and mastery of the mystic arts would prove no match for the sheer numbers of their Hyuran allies. Thus did they concede kingship to the Hyuran elders. With this, some Hyurs came to see the Au Ra as powerful allies, but others would continue to cruse them as ruthless invaders.
The Garlean Occupation
Unfortunately, the newly founded nation of Werlyt would not last. The advent of magitek and transformed Garlemald into a heretofore unseen military power, allowing them to take Corvos with ease and subsequently draw Werlyt under the Garlean yoke.
The province was charged with supplying foodstuffs and mineral resources to fuel the burgeoning empire, and in some ways the dissemination of magitek would prove a boon. The mechanization of mining, for example, was momentous, but any such innovations as the Garleans would bring ever remained beyond the reach of the subjugated. For thirty years the people of Werlyt toiled thus, but they would eventually be offered a glimmer of hope. The Empire had begin the second phase of its incursion into the Far Eastern territories, a campaign requiring a considerable portion of their military force. Even the occupying force in Werlyt had been greatly diminished, affording rebel factions the leverage needed to reclaim their home.
Their dreams of freedom were fleeting, however, as a young Gaius van Baelsar led imperial forces back to assault the capital of Werlyt and restore Garlean order. As the previous viceroy had been killed by the rebels, Gaius would assume command of the newly reclaimed province.
Two Sides of Governance
Reflecting on the plight of the Werlytian peoples that drove them to rebellion, Gaius, the newly appointed viceroy, well knew that drastic measures were needed to prevent a second uprising. He began by recruiting individuals he deemed competent and capable, paying no heed to their station, race, or place of origin. Indeed, no few Werlytians were sought out for their extensive knowledge of the land, serving in various bureaucratic positions. Over the next twenty years, Gaius would also oversee a more even distribution of the province's wealth; new infrastructure in the form of roads, ports, and harbors; an a compulsory education system that would substantially increase literacy rates throughout Werlyt. But the peace and order he established there was short-lived.
The invasion of Eorzea and its consequences, naturally, left van Baelsar unable to fulfill his duties in Werlyt. The man who would take his place was Valens van Varro, an otherwise unremarkable civilian who had somehow risen through the military ranks. After losing his position amidst political turmoil in the Empire, he was given command of a newly reformed VIIth Imperial Legion. The grim shadow he cast over Werlyt would undo all the good Gaius had achieved and so much worse. Forced labor, imprisonment, and executions quickly became normalcies of day-to-day living. So much so, that it was said one could only find rest under the mortician's roof.
The Treasonous Five
Rather than subjugate the enemy, Valens was satisfied with bleeding both their resources and people dry--a tyrannical approach to governance often said to be heinous even by his fellow countrymen. It was a path that would lead to ruin for the province of Werlyt. Yet despite appearances, he was an exceedingly brilliant engineer, and there was a method to his madness.
Emperor Varis had been assassinated, and as various parties vied for the throne, Garlmald's aristocracy was in the throes of chaos. That is why Valens labored to complete his Weapons project, that he might make a triumphant return to Garlemald, wielding the ultimate tool of war. He well understood the need for urgency, and was more than willing to bring ruin upon Werlyt if it meant assuring his place as emperor.
For all his genius, however, Valens remained ignorant of his coming downfall until it was too late. The orphans he intended to use as test pilots for his project were plotting to use his Weapons against him, and the fruition of their plan would bring the VIIth Legion to its knees. One must not overlook, of course, the significance of Gaius's contributions to their efforts, as well as the rebel factions that also conspired to overthrow the Garleans. Even so, it was ultimately the bravery and sacrifice of five orphans that would spell the end of Valens, and earn Welryt her freedom.
Faces of Werlyt
GAIUS BAELSAR
"I see now that true strength is not granted by others, but resides within us. Strength of character, of spirit, of resolve."
With his defeat at the hands of the Warrior of Light in Castrum Meridianum, this former legatus of the XIVth Legion realized that he had long been a mere pawn in the Ascians' plans. He swore revenge against them for his fallen comrades, taking up the mantle of Shadowhunter, and though his quest for vengeance would claim the masks of Altima and Deudalaphon, the hunt for Ascians was quickly set aside when he learned of the Empire's plans to produce the noxious weapon Black Rose.
En route to Garlemald, Gaius crossed paths with Alphinaud, forming an alliance to halt production of the deadly gas--and this was not his only unexpected encounter with the Scions. As he infiltrated the capital, Gaius chanced to meet Estinien, and together they breached the imperial palace. There, they witnessed the assassination of Emperor Varis at the hands of Zenos. The rogue prince swiftly departed, and not moments later, imperial guards found Gaius standing over the late emperor's corpse.
His relationship with his home nation soured further when he discovered the previously abandoned Weapon project had been revived by the reformed VIIth Legion, who planned to deploy their prototypes in an assault on Eorzea. Gaius set off for Ghimlyt, hoping to warn the Eorzean Alliance before it was too late. There he found the Warrior of Light at the ready--this time, to stand with him against their common for. In a tragic twist, the orphans Gaius once fostered would also be caught up in the conflict.
Now, at the age of fifty-six and with Werlyt freed from the imperial yoke, Gaius has joined hands with its interim government in efforts to restore the region.
VALENS VAN VARRO
"As they say, 'to err is human, to forgive, divine.' And you know how forgiving I can be. When it suits me..."
Legatus of the reformed VIIth Legion, Valens joined the army following the completion of his studies at the Magitek Academy. Known for his ruthless and innovative magitek-based battle tactics, it seemed nothing could stop his ascension through the ranks. Those who served under him, however, knew well his unethical practices and penchant for sacrificing allies to serve his ambitions. Moreover, despite his achievements, he never escaped the shadow of Gaius, who was ultimately chosen to command the XIVth Legion. Believing the position stolen from him, Valens developed a deep hatred for the legatus even as he toiled to recreate Ultima Weapon under Nero's direction. This selfsame spite is what inspired him to later resume work on the Weapon project, believing that, by succeeding where Gaius had previously failed, he might at last prove himself the superior military officer.
Valens has ever been a staunch believer in Garlean supremacy. This was made all too apparent by his heinous decision to use villagers from the provinces as test subjects, believing them to be expendable. In the wake of the Emperor's death, he had hoped to take advantage of the chaos in Garlemald to assume the throne, but his dreams of grandeur would remain unfulfilled. The Weapon pilots, whom he had treated with such disdain, rebelled and eventually proved his undoing. After losing in a duel against Gaius, the fifty-six-year-old Valens met his demise at the hands of the Diamond Weapon.
SEVERA SOUTHER
"All that hatred, festering away...Nothing good could ever come of it."
Daughter to a citizen of Werlyt and a Garlean soldier, Severa joined the army in the hopes of deterring those who would cast scorn on her family. Even as she served, however, the Garleans denied Severa's mother the medicine she needed to maintain her faltering health. Though Severa deserted in the wake of the XIIth Legion's defeat in Ala Mhigo, she returned to Werlyt too late to save her mother and could do little but flee once more, eventually finding herself in the company of Gaius. Now twenty-three, she can often be found offering counsel to young Allie.
VALDEAULIN GANATHAIN
"It's taken me a long time--too long--but I've finally found a reason to live for the present. For the future."
Until Ala Mhigo fell to the Empire, Valdeaulin had made his home in the Black Shroud. As the Garleans continued their expansion, he lost not only his village, but his wife and daughter as well--his family abducted as test subjects for the fatal gas known as Black Rose. He later joined the Order of the Twin Adder, intent on exacting vengeance agains the invaders. The forty-eight-year-old Duskwight would have his chance amidst the ruin of the Praetorium, where he found a wounded Gaius on the verge of death, but ultimately chose to spare the Black Wolf and aid him in his hunt for Ascians.
ALFONSE AAN BAELSAR
"If it is the duty of the strong to lead the weak, we will become strong and protect those who cannot protect themselves."
An epidemic claimed the life of Alfonse's parents when he was still a child, leaving him and his sister Allie living on the streets of Werlyt. The two were adopted by Gaius, and Alfonse soon became an elder brother to all of the children in the Black Wolf's care. Wishing to be of greater help to their adoptive father, the Auri siblings joined the military, serving in the XIVth Legion/ During Operation Archon, they remained in Werlyt on a supply mission, but were soon transferred to the VIIth Legion, where they were coerced into becoming pilots for the Weapon project. Faced with a dire situation, they plotted to take advantage of their position and use the Weapons against the Garleans to liberate Werlyt. Although inextricably fused with the core of the Diamond Weapon, Alfonse managed to kill Valens and secure a future for his home and sister both. He was twenty-one summers old at the time of his death.
ALLIE AAN BAELSAR
"The days we spent together were the happiest of my life, and no matter what happens, nothing can take that away from me."
Allie and her brother were adopted by Gaius and given the surname Baelsar. When they were reassigned to the Legion, the name caught Valens's eye, and he wasted no time in selecting them as candidates for the Weapon project.
The youngest of her foster siblings, Allie was dearly loved by them all. She wanted nothing more than to have their portrait painted together as a family, but it was not meant to be, as she alone would survive the Weapon project. Despite having experienced so much loss by the age of sixteen summers, Allie works dauntlessly at Gaius's side to realize her siblings' dream of a free and flourishing Werlyt.
REX AAN BAELSAR
"This is our way of upholding the ideals Father instilled in us. Our lives are a small price to pay for Werlyt's freedom."
Though he too was tragically orphaned, Rex's cheery disposition always brightened the spirits of his foster siblings. He cared deeply for his adoptive family, and would do anything to shield them from harm, even should it mean defying his superiors. He placed complete faith in his brother Alfonse, whom he held in particularly high regard, seeing the elder brother's dreams as his own. Tragically, the eighteen-year-old's life was cut short when he took the helm of the Emerald Weapon, his essence overwritten with combat data modeling his beloved father Gaius as he merged with the machine's core.
RICON AAN BAELSAR
"You all made me happier than I had any right to be. And now...I've finally found my purpose. I have no regrets."
Though timid by nature, Ricon would not hesitate to lay down his life to save his adopted siblings. Upon joining the XIVth Legion, his skilled hands earned him a place working under Nero to hone his skills as an engineer, and the wealth of knowledge he gained from his training was readily applied to the Weapon project once he was permitted to assist with maintenance. Although determined to help correct the mistakes of past prototypes, he well knew they lacked time to fully prepare the Sapphire Weapon. This did Ricon elect to pilot the Weapon in place of his brother Rex, and the life of another brave youth was snuffed out by the Oversoul system. He was seventeen years of age.
MILISANDIA AAN BAELSAR
"Father still needs you. Please take care of him...in our place."
One of several orphans taken in by Gaius, Milisandia had hair of crimson, though it was not always so kissed by fire. When they still lived in an orphanage, the young lady believed that Alfonse was enamored with one of the institution's matrons and, perhaps hoping to win his attention, dyed her hair the same color as the woman who captivated him. This youthful infatuation would remain unspoken unto her dying day, when she passed away aboard the Ruby Weapon at the age of only twenty summers.
AVILINA AAN HORNE
"There's a way I can make a difference. I know there is."
Ten years ago, Ternclif-born Avilina was conscripted to serve as a magitek engineer in the XIVth Legion. These she met Milisandia, and the two became close friends. After the XIVth's defeat at Castrum Meridianum, she fled back to Werlyt, but with her experience working on the Ultima Weapon, it was inevitable that she would be assigned to the Weapon project with the VIIth Legion. Though the liberation of Werlyt granted her her freedom, she still carries the guilt of having assisted with the Weapon project, knowing that it claimed the life of her one true friend.

Granted, this is coming from a cisgendered perspective and I've never actually had to deal with people saying these things about me, but I'm really confused by the people who keep saying, "transgenderism is a fetish, you're just trying to make yourself into something you find sexually attractive".
And? Seriously, even if we ignore the fact that that doesn't actually seem to describe any of the trans people I know, it does describe huge swaths of the cis population. How many cis people work out and get plastic surgery and are mentored on national TV about how to pick clothes that will make them look sexier? Fuck, every single day this month, I've seen at least four ads for, "New year, new you! Work out, diet, lose weight, and be sexy!" I might not fully 'get' it as an asexual person, but I'd have to be pretty dumb to be surrounded by this all the time and not think, "Yeah, a lot of people want a sexually attractive body." One's mind might turn to a lesbian getting dressed for clubbing and thinking, "I'd fuck me." but the straightest gymbro picking out the skimpiest tank tops to show off his muscles before chugging steroids and a protein shake has done just as much to alter his body as any trans person.
Or is this just one of those many things that just shows you're a "normal person with a healthy libido" when cis people do it but are treated like some sort of mental illness if you're trans?

The Importance of Calcium:
Calcium is widely recognized for its role in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. However, its benefits extend far beyond skeletal health. Calcium is also involved in muscle contractions, nerve function, blood clotting, and the regulation of enzyme activity. It is particularly crucial during childhood and adolescence when bones are growing, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Additionally, adequate calcium intake throughout life may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones. Furthermore, research suggests that calcium may play a role in managing blood pressure and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
Plant-Based Sources of Calcium:
For individuals who follow a plant-based or dairy-free diet, it's important to be aware of alternative sources of calcium. Here are some of the best plant-based sources to consider:
1. Leafy Greens:
Dark, leafy greens such as kale, collard greens, turnip greens, and spinach are excellent sources of calcium. These nutrient-packed vegetables not only offer calcium but also provide other essential vitamins and minerals.
2. Almonds:
Almonds are a versatile and nutritious snack that contains a considerable amount of calcium. Additionally, they offer healthy fats, protein, and fiber, making them a valuable addition to your diet.
3. Sesame Seeds:
Sesame seeds, commonly used in various cuisines, are a rich source of calcium. They can be sprinkled on salads, added to baked goods, or used in homemade granola for an extra calcium boost.
4. Tofu and Tempeh:
Tofu and tempeh, both derived from soybeans, are excellent plant-based sources of calcium. These versatile protein sources are widely used in vegetarian and vegan cooking and can be incorporated into a variety of dishes.
5. Fortified Plant-Based Milk Alternatives:
Many plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond milk, soy milk, and oat milk, are fortified with calcium to provide a comparable amount to dairy milk. Be sure to check the labels to ensure adequate calcium content.
6. Chia Seeds:
Chia seeds not only provide calcium but are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants. They can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or used as a topping for yogurt or salads.
7. Beans and Lentils:
Beans and lentils, including chickpeas, black beans, and lentils, are not only excellent sources of protein and fiber but also contain notable amounts of calcium. They can be incorporated into soups, stews, salads, or even used as a base for veggie burgers.
Calcium is an essential mineral that contributes to numerous functions within the human body. While dairy products are often associated with calcium, there are plenty of plant-based sources that can provide this vital nutrient. By incorporating leafy greens, almonds, sesame seeds, tofu, fortified plant-based milk alternatives, chia seeds, beans, and lentils into your diet, you can ensure an adequate calcium intake while enjoying a diverse and nutritious plant-based lifestyle. A protein that disrupts cells’ energy centers may be a culprit in chronic fatigue syndrome | Science | AAAS
New study offers clues as to how exhaustion could arise in people with ME/CFS—and potentially related conditions such as Long Covid
People living with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) struggle not only with extreme exhaustion and the cognitive problems known as brain fog, but with a profound lack of information about what causes their symptoms and how to treat them. Scientists have yet to pin down the biology underlying the condition, which affects up to 2.5 million people in the United States alone, according to some estimates.
Now, researchers have identified a protein that’s present at unusually high levels in the muscles of people with ME/CFS and that disrupts cells’ ability to generate energy. The findings, reported today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could point to new therapeutics for this condition and for illnesses that share similar characteristics, such as Long Covid.
Akiko Iwasaki, an immunobiologist at Yale School of Medicine who was not involved in the work, praises the research as “very well done” but cautions that the suspect protein is likely “a piece of the puzzle, as opposed to explaining the whole disease.” The findings suggest it could act as one of several “middlemen” between whatever sparks the illness and symptoms such as fatigue, she says.
...
The NHLBI researchers wondered whether WASF3 was interacting with mitochondria, cellular compartments responsible for energy generation that have been suggested to malfunction in people with ME/CFS and Long Covid. Sure enough, by changing levels of WASF3 inside cultured cells from S1 as well as in other human and mouse cells, the team found the protein could disrupt mitochondrial function. Specifically, high levels of WASF3 interfered with the assembly of mitochondrial proteins into molecular complexes that support normal energy production.

Interview with Thomas Müller
By: GQ Deutschland
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/11b710e62265c22a1678bce59db3cffe/f81b6e1f8c891428-6d/s540x810/fd99fbac76893ebedfc9792473ec3126429df13e.jpg)
Thomas, you are launching a high protein drinkable meal on the market together with ESN. Athletes and healthy eating go together in principle. But how exactly did the cooperation come about?
I was looking for an entrepreneurial project that suited me. That's why I asked around in the industry, because I'm very interested in healthy nutrition - and especially in practical healthy nutrition. As a professional athlete, I naturally find myself in a special situation: I am supplied with the right food every day. But I believe that with the knowledge I have acquired, I can help my friends and family to eat better and more practically at the same time. I wanted to develop good products that I could stand behind and that's how I ended up at ESN. We are not the first on the market with our protein drinkable meal. But it was remarkable that RDY tastes almost shockingly much better than the products I was drinking before (laughs)
How much influence did you have on the finished product in the end?
The product category has been around for a while. It was important to me that we try to optimize the ingredients of the drink and tweak the protein content a little. I had the biggest influence on the selection of RDY flavors. I specified the direction in which the individual flavors should go - whether they should be tart or sweet. We developed this further in many tastings, so that they now have a clear "Thomas Müller note".
You've already said it, as a professional athlete you have experts to help you with your diet. At the age of 34, you are now a senior footballer - how has your diet changed as a result?
Of course! We have great chefs at both the club and the national team who prepare food that is perfectly tailored to us. And a lot has changed in the last 15 years: Today, there's no longer a Leberkäs sandwich on the buffet, but rather risotto, broccoli and fish.
You're more of a wiry type in terms of your build, not a muscle pack - is your diet balanced so that you maintain this?
For me, both training and nutrition are primarily about being fit to play. The older you get, the harder it is for your body to regenerate and the more support it needs to avoid injury. During the season, I don't focus on extreme muscle building. When we play three times a week, my body works best when I put a lot of emphasis on core stability and mobility during training. My protein intake is an extremely important factor here. Many people only associate protein with muscle building, but it is one of the most important building blocks that our body needs to keep our body and skeleton stable.
Staying stable is particularly important for you this year: the euro is coming up in Germany in the summer. To what extent is that already an issue for you at the moment?
It's a big topic, even if it's only buzzing around in the background for me during the current very game-intensive time at FC Bayern
The public mood surrounding the national team was pretty bad for a long time, and after the two test match victories against France and the Netherlands, the experts are once again saying that the title is not only possible, but a must. You've been in the business long enough to be able to put this into perspective - do you do the same with the younger players in the team?
I think one of my strengths is finding the right balance between fun and seriousness. Despite my ambition, I always need a pinch of humor. Even if everything never runs smoothly, it's worth sticking with it with joy and motivation. And that's what I try to convey.
Do you already see your successors in the team who can take on exactly this role for the team?
There are definitely a lot of players who will be fun to watch play football for years to come. At the same time, of course, it's important to show your face. The fans expect a certain amount of interaction from players, so you can't just show yourself on the pitch and then hide away again.
What are your expectations for the mood at the Euros - especially when you compare it to the "summer fairytale" of 2006, when the whole country was euphoric. Can you achieve that again?
Absolutely. I think the potential for ecstasy is there. I also think that a lot of things that have happened in recent years, from corona to the various political problems in the world, have created a great need to be really happy again. It doesn't feel like the easiest of times at the moment, so an event like this can trigger something that gets everyone going. Of course, for it to be like 2006, the key moments for us have to be right, with victories in close games against good opponents.
When do you consider the European Championship a success?
As players, if we can be satisfied with our performance. I know that in the end it's the result that counts, but if we are narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals after a great game against a strong opponent, then I could live with that, because that's the nature of sport. But of course the title is the goal
As a German citizen, I would be delighted if we could once again show our hospitality at such a big event. That the people who attended the games go home happy after the European Championships and have had a great experience in Germany. That would be the greatest success from an intercultural perspective.

The Rookie Road: A Beginner's Guide to Workout Wisdom with Kirby Repaja
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/585ecb2e0bf215f24f2a24afe266ac18/de4b879c9b18e6bd-dc/s540x810/5bc823874b28b771ac33aec83bddf807ade0e27f.jpg)
In the ever-evolving fitness world, getting started can feel like navigating through a jungle of information. Overwhelming, to say the least, especially with so much conflicting advice floating around the internet. Introducing Coach Kirby Repaja, someone who's been in the trenches of fitness for over six years as a professional bodybuilder.
So, whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned gym-goer looking to level up your game, his insights will resonate with you. His passion for fitness is infectious, his knowledge is invaluable, and his commitment to helping others achieve their goals is unwavering.
Who exactly is Coach Kirby Repaja? He has been in the field for quite some time, and being so has made him accumulate a following. He now coaches many people to help them in their journey. For credentials, he is the Champion of the IFBB Nationals of 2022, 2nd Place in the 2022 IFBB Nationals Open Teens, and 5th Place in the BHC 2023 Junior Division. He has allowed us to dive into his world and see what he has in store for us today.
"What were the most impactful and significant moments in your journey?"
In retrospect, he recalls the turning point that shaped his path:
"The most significant moment in my journey was back when I got my first champion in the IFBB Nationals, where it was my men's physique debut. I survived at that prep even though I had a low budget then."
Coach Kirby explores the particulars of diet for weight management, emphasizing the significance of customized strategies suited to each person's physique and goals, using this milestone as a source of inspiration. "Regarding weight loss and weight gain, it depends on your weight, activity rate, and current physique," he says.
"The secret to it is to be consistent."
Coach Kirby does, however, provide a general rule for losing weight or fat:
"Make sure to be on a calorie deficit and hit your macronutrients."
When paired with consistency, this structured strategy is the core of successful weight management programs. At the same time, he recommends a calorie surplus while keeping adherence to macro-objectives for individuals trying to gain weight or develop a lean body.
Considering budget and accessibility, we asked him about what he would recommend to individuals striving to meet their dietary needs on a budget.
"For me, it is the basics, especially if you are only a student who budgets his money. Chicken breast and eggs are two basic sources of protein and essential nutrients. This is very sustainable and effective. You can get your protein intake and fats there. For your carbohydrates, you get them in rice, oats, or sweet potatoes."
He spoke.
Next, we asked Coach Kirby his thoughts on the never-ending debate about what weightlifting and calisthenics provide better than the other. This is the wise advice he gave based on firsthand knowledge.
"The decision between weightlifting and calisthenics is based on personal tastes and aspirations."
He says.
"Both can be combined to produce a well-rounded exercise program."
He recommends a balanced approach to muscle stimulation when designing an exercise program.
"For beginners, four exercises for big body parts in the upper and lower body are optimal."
he says. He also added that one should do at least 2-3 exercises for small body parts such as the arms and shoulders.
To end the interview, we asked him one final question:
"What is a quote or saying that you would like to impart to those just starting in their workout journey, and why this specific quote/saying?"
"Love and trust the process." He emphasized the quote by saying it is very one-to-one with the journey someone takes in the fitness world. There is no rushing it; whether you like it or not, there will be days where progress feels stagnant and slow, but the point of all of it is to learn and hone your body to its best version. There is no rushing the process; you must let it take its course to see your efforts bear fruit. And so,
"Love and trust the process."

If you have access to the paywalled study this write-up is based on, I would love to read it.
Brigham researchers have found that people with wide-ranging long COVID symptoms were twice as likely to have SARS-CoV-2 proteins in their blood, compared to those without long COVID symptoms.
A persistent infection could explain why some people experience long COVID symptoms, according to a new study led by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The team found evidence of persistent infection in 43% of participants with multiple symptoms of long COVID. Results are published in Clinical Microbiology and Infection.
"If we can identify a subset of people who have persistent viral symptoms because of a reservoir of virus in the body, we may be able to treat them with antivirals to alleviate their symptoms," said lead author Zoe Swank, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
The study analyzed 1,569 blood samples collected from 706 people, including 392 participants from the National Institutes of Health-supported Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative, who had previously tested positive for a COVID infection. With a highly sensitive test they developed, researchers looked for whole and partial proteins from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They also analyzed data from the participants' long COVID symptoms, using electronic medical chart information or surveys that were gathered at the same time as the blood samples were taken.
Compared to people who didn't report long COVID symptoms, those who reported persisting symptoms affecting heart and lung, brain, and musculoskeletal systems were twice as likely to have SARS-CoV-2 proteins circulating in their blood. The research team was able to detect the spike protein and other components of the SARS-CoV-2 virus using Simoa, an ultrasensitive test for detecting single molecules. Commonly reported long COVID symptoms included fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain, joint pain, back pain and headache.
Specifically, 43% of those with long COVID symptoms affecting three major systems in the body tested positive for viral proteins within 1 to 14 months of their positive COVID test. But only 21% of those who didn't report any long COVID symptoms tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 biomarkers in this same period.
It's possible that a persistent infection explains some—but not all—of the long COVID sufferers' symptoms. If this is the case, testing and treatment could aid in identifying patients who may benefit from treatments such as antiviral medications.
A condition with more than one cause One of the questions raised by the study is why more than half of patients with wide-ranging long COVID symptoms tested negative for persistent viral proteins.
"This finding suggests there is likely more than one cause of long COVID," said David Walt, Ph.D., a professor of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Principal Investigator on the study. "For example, another possible cause of long-COVID symptoms could be that the virus harms the immune system, causing immune dysfunction to continue after the virus is cleared."
To better understand whether an ongoing infection is behind some people's long COVID symptoms, Swank, Walt and other researchers are currently conducting follow-up studies. They're analyzing blood samples and symptom data in larger groups of patients, including people of wide age ranges and those with compromised immune symptoms. This way, they can also see if some people are more likely to have persistent virus in the body.
"There is still a lot that we don't know about how this virus affects people," said David C. Goff, M.D., Ph.D., a senior scientific program director for the RECOVER Observational Consortium Steering Committee and director of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH. "These types of studies are critical to help investigators better understand the mechanisms underlying long COVID—which will help bring us closer to identifying the right targets for treatment."
Goff added that these results also support ongoing efforts to study antiviral treatments.
The SARS-CoV-2 blood test developed by Brigham and Women's researchers is also currently being used in a national study, called RECOVER-VITAL, that is testing whether an antiviral drug helps patients recover from long COVID. The RECOVER-VITAL trial will test the patients' blood before and after treatment with an antiviral to see if treatment eliminates persistent viral proteins in the blood.
The idea that a virus can stay in the body and cause ongoing symptoms months after an infection isn't unique to COVID.
"Other viruses are associated with similar post-acute syndromes," said Swank. She noted animal studies have found Ebola and Zika proteins in tissues post-infection, and these viruses have also been associated with post-infection illness.
