Alfred runs a front.
You know those posts where people accidentally stumble upon fronts for money laundering operations? And how the people just roll with it and go “fuck yeah this is a pizza store, what can we get you?” and then proceed to deliver the best pizza you’ve ever had?
That, but with the batcave. Logically, it’s impossible to get near it. There’s no way anyone strategic or analytic can trace back the batfam to find an entrance to it. But somehow this group of college kids stumble upon it on accident after getting horribly lost on their way for a 3 am snack run. They’re all sleep-deprived and so used to Gotham’s eccentricities that they honestly don’t even get alarmed when Google maps tells them to drive through a wall, even less so when it fucking WORKS.
The butler had been bored for the last couple of days, and since everyone was off on missions, the silence was adding to Alfred’s anxiety about his children. So when he sees these group of confused kids yelling into the darkness if this was bar, he says “screw it”. In the blink of an eye, there’s a decoy close to but not quite near the batcave, where Alfred turns the room into a cosy little hangout spot.
It becomes a phenomenon only for the true Gotham locals. And Gotham is protective of its own. Alfred doesn’t have to worry about telling anyone to keep it a secret, it’s now become a sort of initiation/tradition for new Gothamites when the locals think they’ve earned it. Some days Alfred keeps it well hidden when he doesn’t want to entertain, others he allows it to be found, fills up his bartending stall and waits for the chaos. People pour in, and it’s a nice cozy place just to be. Alfred’s a mean bartender, he whips up drinks like never before. Also gives advice like never before.
Some days it’s a bar, and you go there with your closest friends and as long as you clean up after yourselves and aren’t being disruptive, nobody cares. Others the menu includes tea, and it’s the time for bringing games to play with loved ones. Everyone is friendly and plays nice, because Alfred will not hesitate to pull out a shotgun for anyone who things otherwise.
People sometimes spot the bats or the justice league hovering around the location and figure it’s an exclusive occasion, and honestly a billionaire having a private bar for superheroes is not that weird at all so people roll with it.
Alfred exchanges information with others, builds his channel of gossip. He hears about the newer, local threats that emerge. The political and economic issues grieving Gotham’s citizens, and makes a mental note to tell the others. He hears Tim and Stephanie were munching on burgers last night, he guesses all their praise about his waffles were merely lies. But he also knows how Cheryl from the retirement home plays a mean BINGO, and can’t lose even if she tried. Speaking of which, he needs to hold another tournament soon not because Alfred was petty or competitive.. he was merely.. competent.
Nobody from the batfam knows about this. It’s Alfred’s favorite past time, and no one from the batfam is allowed within TWENTY feet of it.
The man’s a proper Englishman. Let him have his tea.

netflix posting a compilation of kaos tumblr posts featuring THIS SPECIFIC ONE is my last straw
Tumblr media
that literally also describes dead boy detectives.
like kaos does look really great i fucking love mythology and i will probably watch it eventually!! this is annoyance at netflix not kaos as a show, it's just pissing me off a bit that they're giving this show SO much more attention and promotion than dead boy detectives got when they seem to have somewhat similar themes and target audiences

So many adaptations of things like the backrooms and the poolrooms get it wrong. it’s not that there’s a monster in there. it’s that the monster is the rooms themselves.
To me the horror of things like the poolrooms is because something should be there, and isn’t. This is actually what liminality is at its core. From a theoretical perspective, it is a space between two places. It is not a place where people go and remain. Motels. Train stations. Rest stops. Stairwells. Office buildings. Community pools. All places people are, but don’t stay.
Putting a monster in the poolrooms always feels so cheap because there are a million other horror experiences where a thing is chasing you or lurking somewhere. Avoiding a monster in the poolrooms is the same as avoiding a monster in a forest or a pizza restaurant or a house or a hospital or or or or etc. it’s a coat of paint at that point. It undermines the very unique liminal aspects of these locations by not engaging with its core components of time, space, solitude, and even identity that do not exist elsewhere. It just makes it Avoid The Monster Game number fourteen thousand and three.
When really, there is a horror of a place that is ever-expansive. A horror of a beast that is a location, a place that you cannot escape from, where you cannot die, and the only living thing is you.

its just funny to me that some bright individuals genuinely think that buck struggling to move on from tommy means something for bt. like buck the clinger? buck who was holding on to the idea of abby returning for MONTHS? buck who asked taylor to move in as a way to securing their relationship before he had to break out the bad news? nah dude he just has a hard time letting people go, tommy ain’t THAT special

All the character models from GR by Pedro Astudillo! These are muted, and better quality ones exist. I am planning to make a post with all the Rex art later.

Season 1 is Mike and El's love story because season 1 serves as a prologue:
Part of the thing with Mike and his romance with El is that he doesn't overtly seem to have a storyline outside of it. And that means that his primary character arc must be tied to and his demonstration in the final season of said character arc, which is confirmed for him is not complete yet, would be in his relationship with her.
But they got together in season 1. In the situation where he is straight and his character arc focus is to do with being with her...they started him with 0 need to grow in season. one.
If Mike were straight, the focus of his arc would be something he achieved in episode 8. of 42.
There isn't focus on them the way there is because they're the "main couple". There's focus on them because there's been nothing left for them to do as a couple since episode 8 of currently 34. (Their conflict serves a different purpose now).
In season 1, Mike would have needed to allow himself to see himself as deserving of El and be vulnerable enough to make a move. In episode 3, he worries she would judge him because of the bullying, but he overcomes that and does make a move.
If that's his arc....that's it. If that's his arc, then everything after that just repeated an already solved issue in order to solve it again. And I understand why people who think that hate it.
But when every other arc is written for 4-5 seasons...doesn't anyone find it odd that what they think Mike's was only written for 1? The others prove that they clearly planned for being renewed so....what gives?
I'll tell you what gives. Someone having an arc that completes itself that quickly with so much left is not an arc, it's a set up. It isn't an arc. Season 1 of 5? That's still just exposition in the grand scheme of things. They didn't finish a story then fall off. They simple established a fact: Mike and El are together and they got together in this way. All important information to have for later. They were not telling a love story. They were establishing a fact.
And then what they did with that fact was tell a story: a boy in a straight relationship behaves in a way that he shouldn't and didn't before being with her. - to know that we need to see him before he's with her.
Season 1 is simple: meet Mike before El. They're dating now btw.
That isn't a love story. It's just information you'll need for later. Season 1 is just "information you'll need for later when we tell you a story based on it".
That's what it is for literally everybody in the show, actually! Think Lucas Sinclair. Season 1 serves to show him before he met Max, much more tense and easily stressed a person. In season 2 his story really STARTS. Season 1 is his "before". The same is true of establishing Nancy and Steve and the way they are still together in the end of season 1. Will is also not in season 1 at all but he is a MAJOR part of the story and lore.
So if season 1 is just their "before"...what does that mean for the love story fully contained to season 1 with no further romance, payoff, or get-together outside of it?
I've said before: literally all they had to do was interrupt them two seconds earlier and save the first kiss for the Snow Ball. But season 2 is part of the story, not the prologue, and them kissing was just to have them start dating as soon as possible so by the time we hit the story, we knew it to be true.
But I understand. If all of us were given prologues thinking they were stories, our perceptions of the book would be much different. It makes complete sense why the perception from people who watched in 2016 and people who binge it now are so different. 2024 bingers perceive it as a prologue. They know the happy ending isn't left there because the drop down menu has three more numbers in it. They understand that this is just information to work off of. They expect more of those two's love story but when they aren't given it they go "huh, guess that was just in the prologue".
Mike and El's relationship isn't a story. It's lore. It's backstory. There's just no way to convey that when releasing it chronologically (and calling it a prologue would be assuming/seeming to depend on a renewal and would not have gotten picked up).
The STORY is his behavioral change.

And raise you the distance between Chase and Cameron and the distance between House and Wilson in Known Unknowns 6x07, when Chase and Cameron are separated by the secret of Chase murdering Dibala and Wilson and House are separated by a difference of opinion over Wilson delivering a paper on euthanasia.
