I wanna talk about Buck and his name, so here is my rant.

Buck prefers to be called Buck. That's the main point. That's pretty much the end of the conversation. It's very clear from the narrative in season 4, and his constant correction of his parents, that he wants to be called Buck and not Evan. He doesn't like being called by his legal first name, he doesn't resonate with it anymore.

Why is this so important, for a lot of reasons. Preferred names are as simple as "I want to be called this, so please call me this." It's a basic sign of respect, and how you respect a person through the way they want to be called and identified. It's the same as Bobby being called that instead of Robert, Eddie being called that instead of Edmundo, Hen being called that instead of Henrietta, and so on.

So why are there still conversations around Buck and his want to be called that instead of Evan? I know why, but for the sake of amicability, I won't mention it. What I will mention, are the two people that are allowed to call Buck Evan, and why those make sense.

The first and most important one is Maddie. She, very early on in the show, for the most part, called Buck Evan pretty interchangeably. This is for a few reasons. One, she is getting used to the name change, and anyone who has gone through that change can tell you that they make mistakes along the way. Two, she still likes calling him Evan, because it's her little brother's name. When she called/calls him Evan, there isn't any malice behind it. She was the only person to love him through and through since the day he was born, therefore, she gets Evan rights. I know many people, whether they are cis and go by a nickname or trans, that let people they love call them by their assigned name simply because they love them, and know they are loved in return (this isn't always the case but just a point I wanted to make). There isn't malice, just love. That is why Maddie can call him Evan.

Now, Eddie. Eddie's use of Evan is one of the most talked about things especially when it comes to the buddie community. But I'm going to talk about why Eddie doesn't necessarily get Evan privileges the way Maddie does, and how I don't think he will use it often, or at all, in the future.

Eddie called Buck Evan for two reasons. One was to get his attention and to call Buck out of his mental spiral. Eddie knew that Buck was spiraling, and the unnaturalness of Eddie calling Buck by his first name would pull him into the moment. The second was for the narrative purpose of showing the audience that Eddie knew Buck more than anyone else, which was especially important for Buck's story for the season, and that episode alone. There were three moments that I can think of where Buck's reckless actions were misunderstood, strictly from season 4. When his mother was yelling at him in the flashback when he crashed his bike, when Taylor yelled at him for climbing up the construction rig where there was no protection, and when Bobby questioned said that it wasn't Buck's fault Eddie got shot. None of these things properly explained why Buck did those things. He knows he's not indestructible, invincible, or at fault for Eddie getting shot. That doesn't matter to him. All he can think about is how it wouldn't matter if he died or was the one who got shot because he believed to his core that he is expendable. That his presence in other people's lives isn't enough, and that he will always be the outlier that is able to be lost.

It isn't true, but it's what he believes. And only one person understands that. Eddie.

So when Eddie called Buck Evan, it was to negate everything that was swirling around in Buck's mind. It was a statement of "I know you, I see you, I understand you, and I love you."

Other than in that moment, Eddie never calls Buck Evan. Simply for what I already said. He knows Buck, sees him, understands him, and loves him.

To repeat what I said up at the top, Buck asking people to call him Buck is a simple preference and sign of respect. Other than Maddie and Eddie, everyone else in his life respects that. The people who don't call Buck Buck, don't fully respect or understand him. It's as simple as that.

“the breakup was bad writing” WHAT DO YOU MEANNNNNN?!?! the relationship was PEAK 9-1-1 writing yall just don’t like that it wasn’t written with tommy as endgame! they were always going to have troubles at micelli’s!! eddie was always going to haunt their narrative!! they never make it to the movie together!! tommy was always going to have to fight for a “spot” in buck’s life and the moment buck finally lets him in (ie he gets a good parking spot) he’s not willing to put in any work to keep it. he never learned that buck doesn’t like basketball he never indulged buck’s love of deep dives even in the breakup he called buck impulsive but the thing is buck isn’t impulsive by nature! he can be self destructive and throw himself into danger for others but actual decisions in his life are so often made by committee. the only time he acts impulsively is when he’s clinging to dying relationships. and he wouldn’t even call him by his name! the only time he calls him buck is right before he leaves when for ONCE he sees him completely. the bucktommy breakup was some of the best work the writers have done in a while im sorry that yall fell in love with a plot device and got mad that he was used as a device for the plot but the writers led you to the water it’s not their fault when you don’t drink

For the love of GOD, Tommy Kinnard is not historic lgbt rep. White gay characters with no personality are a dime a dozen on network tv. Even Buck's bisexuality storyline, while is groundbreaking for queer firefighters, it's also not historic since "older guy discovers he's bi" was already done in Crazy Ex Girlfriend. Even Eddie's queer awakening wouldn't be historic, as there have been a few "formerly straight-identifying guys with religious trauma coming out later in their lives" storylines on tv. Not to mention, Michael's journey on 911. 

Now, Buck and Eddie's relationship would ABSOLUTELY be historic lgbt rep bc we've never had a slowburn same sex romance on network tv, especially with two firefighters (don't just take my word for it, go Google and see it for yourself, we don't have anything like that yet), if they were to go canon, they'll certainly create history. As for what we have right now, a boring relationship with the characters saying one or two lines to each other every third episode, is hardly historic.

You wanna know what's 911's contribution in historic lgbt representation, it's our own Henrietta "Hen" Wilson.

A badass lesbian firefighter+paramedic, who's also been an interim captain, she's strong despite the severe workplace discrimination she had to endure and she's a great mother, she almost became a doctor too, what is it that she can't do? As for her relationship, it's one of the three front and center relationships on 911, her wife Karen is a rocket scientist, and one of the most emotionally mature character I've ever seen on tv, and even though their relationship hit a bump in the first season, they managed to get past the cheating and after that they've had a relatively healthy and happy marriage, and we don't see a lot of that on network tv, especially with two Black women. Hen and Karen never get their dues for being a wonderful queer+wlw representation, and it has only gotten worse since EvanTommy fans have joined the fandom.

i love that this episode proved how buck and tommy's relationship was not different at all to any other buck relationship. months of having to read how this relationship was better for buck and buck was surer and tommy understood him better and blahblahblah. and then buck goes and spirals about something and asks him to move in just like he did with taylor!!!! like this was exactly what his relationship with taylor went through with the lucy kiss. but in this case tommy could just see better what the end road was and he stopped it before it got harder because he had crucial information that had been missing before which was 1) buck is bi 2) he has seen buck and eddie more than any other love interest so he can see where they're going

Something about even when Tommy is taking care of Buck there being this distance between them, Tommy is on the couch and turning off the lights while Buck is still trying to talk, Tommy is in the foreground of Buck having another “who are you without your family” moment in a graveyard, Tommy in the hospital, wearing a visitor badge, close but never touching, there but never there.

Something about Tommy being all over this episode and still barely there at all. He is in Buck- Evan’s- life but he’s not in it, he’s on the outside, always behind this invisible fence

Something about Buck telling Tommy- his BOYFRIEND- Tommy all about this curse and this story, but it’s Eddie who has to explain the holes in the story Buck doesn’t know he’s leaving

Something about Buck being the one we’re shown to get Hens text about Denny, signally everyone else in that room, that family, who got that text except for Tommy, Tommy having to ask what had happened, having to be explained that everything was going to be okay

He is there but he is not, he’s in the room but he’s not apart of it

Something about only dreaming about finding a love like that, something about “you don’t find it son, you make it”

Something about Buck constantly trying to make it work with people, trying to force it to work with people because that what he thinks he meant, because love is work right? It’s something you make work

Something about him always misunderstanding the assignment

Something about the last time Buck was in a graveyard he was shoulder to shoulder with Eddie, talking about how a girl he just met sees him, all the while leaning on Eddie in the aftermath of his death he has accepted but never understood

Something about him telling Tommy that the night they met being the most fun he’s had since dying, something about how he connects Tommy and Natalia to an event neither where there for, as two people who can never understand the horror of those 3 minutes and 17 seconds

Something about Buck throwing himself into danger and adrenaline time after time and chasing relationships that feel like that because that’s love right? Something that feels like being struck by lightening and surviving and non of the side effects

Something about Buck not being able to sleep after his death until he sits on Eddie’s couch, Eddie is the person he comes too for when he’s restless, for the calm after the storm

Something about “it’s about how she makes me feel” “like you’re flying high” “like I’m standing on solid ground”

Something about Tommy being jealous of the 118 and the family they’ve built because he’s not apart of it, and a part of him knows he never will be

Because the roles have all been filled and the family has already been made and he is trying to build something with Buck- Evan- thats already been built
