If you have celiac and buy the brand Van’s for their waffles, please know that 9 days ago there was a recall because some of the packages of the gluten free waffles may contain “undeclared” wheat. And if you have celiac, you know “may” might as well mean “does.
This recall only applies to boxes with the matching lot codes and numbers, and do not pertain to other products that Van’s has to offer. These boxes were distributed in AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, NC, & WA. Please check your boxes immediately to ensure your own safety and save yourself the painful reactions to gluten. It’s advised the purchased packages be either thrown out (or given to someone who can eat wheat so as not to waste it) or return the product to where you’ve purchased it from.
Tumblr media
“The U.S. Food & Drug Administration website published the recall July 3. It applies to certain packs of Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles with lot code UW40193L, expiration date Jan. 19, 2024, and UPC 0 89947 30206 4. According to the Van's recall, some of the packs of waffles may contain undeclared wheat.”

still trying to sort through the layers of this ableism & antifatness but it’s particularly painful that society treats eating gluten-free as something rooted in a desire for weight loss when
i gained more weight in the year after figuring out i have celiac than any other year of my life
including going up two shirt sizes
& going from being read as (small)fat but not having any access issues around size separate from mobility aids to being outside the bounds of straight sizing
because my body can absorb nutrients now
& for most people who ‘need’ to be eating gluten-free, you will gain weight!! & we, including those of us who were already fat, should be given space to celebrate that!! hallelujah that my body is still here to grow!!

Jacq Has Celiac
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jacq Has Celiac is a children's story about a young girl who has celiac disease and feels excluded in the school lunch setting. She cannot eat the same as her friends and feels alone, especially while socializing during lunchtime with her friends. With her parents' support, Jacq comes up with a solution to help all her friends, including those on other restrictive food diets, feel connected while having lunch together at school.
It is a sweet story about empowerment, unity, and friendship. The illustrations are captivating in creativity, vibrant colors, and relatability. They will put a smile on your face as you feel drawn to follow Jacq along her gluten-free journey at school.

Luffy begging chopper to 'cure him' of his lactose intolerance but there isn't anything to cure so chopper can't do anything about it but Luffy just keeps begging
Eventually chopper just gets Luffy the pills to get Luffy to stop asking about it and Luffy is so happy chopper gave him a 'cure' even if it's temporary and he takes the pill and runs to sanji to tell him the news and that the cure is only for the next 30 minutes so he needs to eat right that moment
After checking with chopper sanji makes Luffy a bunch of dairy products and he's even pretty excited about it because he has so many recipes he can let Luffy try and he's even already planning all the things he can make now that Luffy can eat it
Then Luffy promptly throws up, turns out his metabolism burns through the pill insanely quickly and Luffy already had a lot of dairy so he spends the next two days sick and throwing up
Chopper feels really bad about not taking his metabolism into accounts but Luffy reassures him and he keeps telling him he's happy to have gotten a chance to eat dairy again because he hasn't eaten it in years (it has definitely not been years, it's been a few months at most, he's just dramatic)
Sanji is upset because Luffy can't keep food down, he's not mad at chopper, he's just upset that Luffy can't eat
The crew doesn't even really know what to do with themselves cause usually when Luffy got sick because of dairy it was his own fault and their default reaction is always to yell at him and this time it isn't his fault and it isn't anyone's fault but they just really don't like seeing their captain sick
Nami feels so bad she adds more money to sanjis budget so they can splurge on lactose free milk

Aplatonic culture is…
Spending a lot of time in trouble as a kid because you’d tell people you didn’t want to be their friend, and apparently that isn’t very nice, even though you didn’t mean it to be mean, it’s just how you felt
Being sent to counselors because you were always alone and said you didn’t want any friends/you didn’t need friends/you didn’t like people/there were more important things
Kids thinking you were stuck up and mean because you weren’t friendly
Never making a friend on your own, and just being taken in by people who decided they wanted to be your friend/meeting people through your friends (the ones you befriended because they decided you were friends now, not because you had a desire to befriend them)
Never meeting a person and wanting to be friends with them
Being alone and being okay with that because you don’t feel the need to have friends
Having friends that you enjoy being around, but not missing them much when you’re away
“Friend is a strong word”
“I suppose we’re friends”

Free-From Baking
Hey if you're someone who likes to cook and bake a lot, and you also live with/encounter food allergies and intolerances in your day-to-day lives, then this book may be of interest to you:
The Elements of Baking: Making any recipe gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free or vegan by Katarina Cermelj
Release Date: October 3rd 2024
This book is advertised as "the ultimate allergy-friendly cookbook" and I believe it. I've seen photos of this book, and a video on the author's personal Tiktok page that shows it in a bit more detail and I think it looks incredible.
As well as clear visual markers to show which recipes are free from certain ingredients, there are also pictures included for some recipes to show what they should look like if they are gluten-free, egg-free, soy-free etc. Which I think is amazing.
My lactose intolerance and love of baking may make me biased, but I was already excited for this book when it was shown to me before I even looked at Cermelj's website for more information, and now I'm even more so.
Cermelj's site, The Loopy Whisk, also allows you to search for recipes by dietary requirement and recipe type!
She has another cookbook, released in 2022, with details on gluten-free recipes!
If anyone has any other recommendations for allergy/intolerance-friendly cookbooks and recipe books, please let me know! I'd love to add more to the archive!
