Adventures in Librarian-ing
Grade 1: Miss Alice, I saw you today [in the morning on the way to school]! :D
Me: I remember! You waved at me. :)
Grade 1 Teacher: He was telling me this morning "I saw someone who looks like Miss Alice and it's Miss Alice!".
Me: Well, I suppose I do look like me. He's not wrong.

Our toddler will just point at pretty much any and everything and say: dees, dees, dees.”
That’s all I hear when I see dees.

Good news, lots of schools do! At the elementary level we start with a broad category like green/red/yellow/blue. Then move to the feeling names in the middle of the triangle, then as kids develop more emotional awareness move to the specifics. This is Social Emotional Learning. It's very funny to me that SEL is one of many conservative bug-bears about education right now because it actually helps them in school as well as their everyday life.
There’s a reason lots of good parents say to babies stuff like
“You’re excited to go to the park!”
“Oh, it makes you mad that we can’t go outside.”
And then when the babies get a little bit older the parents can say
“You seem upset. Are you sad?”
“Are you excited that gramma is coming over today?”
Which lets the kid (who is learning to utilize speech) respond with yes or no, which may prompt more questions, like
“So you aren’t sad, are you angry?”
“Yes, does it make you happy when gramma is here?”
And then, finally, when the child is learning to use language in a more complex way, the parents can say,
“How does it make you feel?”
“Why are you feeling like that?”
And it’s all about teaching emotional awareness. I really reccomend using the process on yourself. Learn to ask, “am I happy?” “Am I sad?” “Am I anxious?”
Then practice identifying, out loud or on paper if you can, “I’m happy.” “I’m upset.” “I’m sad.” “I’m anxious.”
Final step: “Why am I feeling anxious? I’m still thinking about that awkward conversation earlier.” “Why am I happy? It’s such a beautiful day outside.” “Why am I sad? None of my friends are responding to my messages.”
It really helps you notice patterns (“I’m more likely to be happy when I’m around this person.” “When I haven’t eaten, I often feel angry.” “If I don’t plan ahead, I get anxious.”) which is the first step in avoiding things and people that are bad for you and encouraging things and people that are good.

A few of the more creative spellings of Christmas I’ve come across while looking for Dear Santa letters in old newspapers this year.

My 11-year-old couldn't decide what flavor of ramen to make, so I told her to flip a coin. Heads for spicy chicken, tails for beef.
Taking my advice, she flipped a penny, and when it landed on tails she said "Wait! Wait! I did it wrong!"
I told her that she did it right, because the real reason for flipping a coin isn't to let fate decide for you, but because when the coin is in the air, you will suddenly realize what you wanted in the first place.
I'm sure there's a life lesson there somewhere…
But honestly, I have never known her to pass up spicy chicken.

[Tweet by Christopher, @molochofficial, saying, "one of our better cultural customs is teaching English-speaking children the "Frère Jacques" nursery rhyme and then letting them just go buckwild with vaguely-French sounds."
End ID.]
I thought this was a Canadian thing! You got these songs in a context that WASN'T chock full of French background noise?

Did you see the video where Israeli soldiers dressed up like Muslim women and doctors and stormed the hospital in the West Bank and assassinated 3 young Palestinians?⁣
Did you see the bloody pillow with the bullet hole in it?⁣
THIS IS WHO THEY MURDERED IN THAT BED. A paralyzed CHILD named Bassel. ⁣
This video was taken just one day before Israel literally shot him in the face in his bed. ⁣
Just when you think they can’t get any lower, they do. I don’t care what lies they tell about this child, it is illegal EVERYWHERE to do what they did. ⁣
This kid had nothing to do with October 7th. And anything else he did, you simply aren’t allowed to go into a hospital and murder a paralyzed child. ⁣
It’s CRAZY that we even have to say this. ⁣
And the White House actually defended this today, but it was before this video was released. ⁣

Spending time with kids always reminds me how much I love the way they play. I’ll be like “hey kid look, this little bug is called an isopod it’s related to crabs and it eats dead plants” and they’ll immediately respond with something like “cool let’s play isopods we have to collect dead leaves as fast as we can and if we don’t get enough we die of starvation and have a bug funeral”
What an amazing way to process new information or explore an idea! It’s important to remember these kinds of games are not random or pointless; playing is how kids learn.
