Danny is just a kid ya know? Like he is just a little guy. A baby really. 14? Tiny child! Look at him, he needs to be protected. Someone has to help this poor little dude. I mean he forgets to use his own powers to avoid attacks all the time.

Anyway cut to Batfam not knowing all of Dannys power set cause the lil dingus keeps forgetting he can do that stuff in the heat of battle.

Danny uses his invisibility all the time… to avoid being followed. But in a fight? Oopsies hes too busy thinking of funny one liners to realise he could do that.

Intangibility? Give the guy a break. I mean who calls themselves condiment king. Even he was stunned.

He so rarely actually uses his biggest advantage powers that the League doubt he actually has them. He, like any naive child, trusts them and reported fully on his power set. Instead of just asking him to demonstrate his powers they instead start watching him and try to find evidence of his powers.

At least they know duplication was true since they watched him make a copy of himself to go to the bathroom and not miss any of his fav tv show.

I've been picking mostly only the essential flirt options with lucanis in the romance so far (I've personally found the dynamic much more natural and mutual when you do that, more like forming a solid friendship slowly and inevitably becoming something else and less like you keep pushing on him and getting little back b/c he seemingly just gets overwhelmed and goes into freeze instead), and I think rye is a pretty hard person to read at the best of times even though he's been Down Real Bad from pretty early on and their chemistry as people is naturally really good. so the way the almost-kiss plays out in this playthrough feels a lot like it has the added layer of lucanis realizing that no but for sure rook is flirting and not just being kind or a good friend* it IS actually happening it's not just wishful/fearful thinking!!! and then uh. maybe going a bit too hard a bit too fast in all the excitement at that revelation haha

*in lucanis' defense he has seemingly literally never had a friend who wasn't his cousin-brother before, under those circumstances I suppose some confusion is extremely natural if not outright expected lmao

“requiem for methuselah” crazy ass episode for many reasons. Kirk is being fully insane, like I don’t actually think, even controlling for how quickly and easily and readily he seems to fall in love with anybody at the slightest encouragement, that he’d go that bonkers for that android woman he just met while everyone on the ship was this close to dying, but that’s neither here nor there, because in the background you’ve got an equally but much more subtly insane episode for Spock, who extremely uncharacteristically admits to experiencing an emotion (or nearly experiencing, whatever) and that emotion is ENVY of all things. And then spends the rest of the episode warning Kirk away from this new love interest (something that doesn’t usually happen, even when Kirk has very inadvisable love interests) and is, in the end, the person who accurately identifies that Rayna’s competing love for Kirk and Flint is ultimately what overwhelms and destroys her with the most killer line in maybe history???

And then to wrap it up we get an equally uncharacteristic sort of denouement scene (TOS loooves to cut an episode off right after the actual climax, leaving little time for falling action or character reflection, or to stick a sitcom-y button on the end where the gang all smiles and laughs at their misadventures and everything resets to zero, which is not a criticism, it’s just the style of that era of tv, honestly) where Kirk is literally miserable over Rayna’s death (again, kind of unusual for a lot of his love interests, he tends to be able to move on pretty quickly) and Spock goes to see him and he falls asleep right in front of Spock (also odd) and then when Bones comes in to give the final word on Flint, Spock waves him off from waking the Captain (tender) and Bones gives him that awful speech about how it’s sadder that Spock can’t even imagine the love Kirk felt for this random android woman than it is that Kirk lost her in the first place (debatable but also rude) and how his great tragedy is that he can’t love at all like they can and how all he wishes is that Kirk could forget about all of this and move on. AND THEN, to have Bones leave and Spock go over to Kirk and very gently, tenderly, reluctantly touch him and put his hand to his forehead and tell him to forget and HAVE THAT BE THE END OF THE EPISODE??? What am I supposed to do with that??

The Substance was easily one of the best movies of the year imo… loved the directing, the acting, the writing, the costumes, the cinematography (all those stark angles…), the outdoor shots, the INTERIORS… the way men were written and visually filmed, the way we don’t stay in a room after the main character leaves just so we can hear what everyone else thinks about her - it is HER narrative - I fucking love women directing horror esp. body horror. This is not even to mention the anti-cosmetic modification/injection/surgery themes which are… 😳 Universal was scared to release this film and backed out!!!! GO SEE THIS (but be warned it’s Extremely gory - all I’ll say is haters of excessive CGI in horror will NOT be disappointed in the creativity on display here)

L doesn't actually particularly enjoy the rain.

Why would she? It makes her clothes stick to her skin. Yes, they're already the optimal texture, but nevertheless L would rather not have the reminder.

Sometimes it's necessary, though. Grounding. L considers herself a realist, but recently her thought patterns have become… troublingly unanchored.

She needs a plan, she thinks. Looks up at the sky. The rain is soaking her hair, ruining the ten full seconds of work she does after showers to make it look spiky. She needs a plan. There is a ninety percent chance she is going to die in the next twenty-four hours and she must find a way to lower it.

The bells clamor in her ears.

Footsteps. She looks over. She can never resist looking.

"What are you doing standing out there in the rain?"

L knows how to read lips, obviously. But the whole point is to draw Light outside. She cups a hand to her ear.

"What are you doing, standing out there in the rain?!"

L tilts her head further.

Light sighs in frustration and marches out. L should, probably, feel victorious about this. She drops her gaze instead and stares in the direction of the bells.

Ninety percent.

L should throw Light into a holding cell right now. L should turn headquarters in and out looking for the missing scrap of paper from the murder notebook. L should bullshit another excuse to put Light Yagami under observation, the brilliant specimen she is, and track Misa Amane down with the surveillance bugs attached to her.

But god, the hope crawling in her chest is suffocating.

Go to hell, Light Yagami, she thinks. You've made me an optimist.

The footsteps stop near her. L looks.

"What are you doing, Ryuzaki?"

The I'm not doing anything in particular catches in her throat, half-formed. She frowns instead.

"You cut your hair."

"Oh." Light touches the back of her head in a fairly convincing mimicry of self-consciousness. Her eyes are deader than ever. "Yes. I told you, it was just a phase. I'm not really tr— I'm not like that."

Not like you, she doesn't say. How kind.

"A phase." L should leave it; it's only circumstantial evidence. She presses anyway. "And you've told your father?"

It's fascinating, watching Light decide in real time that a chuckle is too odd given the circumstances. She goes for a long exhale instead. "Not yet. I'm not quite sure how to explain it to him, that I was just… confused. I will soon, though. Listen, Ryuzaki, what are you doing here?"

Like a dog with a bone, L thinks, with a worrying amount of fondness. "It's nothing," she says. Looks up at the sky, gray as television static. "It's just… I hear the bell."

"The bell?"

"Yes," L says, glancing at her. Light's face barely moves. "The sound of the bell has been unusually loud today."

Light's eyebrows furrow. She looks around. "I don't hear anything."

"Really," L says. "You can't hear it." Of course she can't. L is perfectly aware that she is hearing things, most likely from the nightmares. "It's been ringing non-stop all day. I find it very distracting."

Light has her hand up to shield her face from the rain. It isn't working well.

"I wonder if it's a church," L continues. "Maybe a wedding, or perhaps a…"

"What are you getting at, Ryuzaki?" Ah, there's the annoyance. It's not real either. "Come on, cut it out. Let's get back inside."

So you can shave a few more minutes off my lifespan?

What is L doing out here? What is she hoping to achieve? Why mention weddings around her chief suspect in a mass murder investigation?

"I'm sorry," she says. She's not. She's angry at herself, maybe, for ever entertaining any other possibility. "Nothing I say makes any sense anyway. If I were you, I wouldn't believe any of it."

Light makes a soft, confused noise, and doesn't move.

L stares at the floor. Water drips off the strand of hair directly in front of her nose. The seconds tick away, too loud and too fast.

"You know, you're totally right," Light says. There's a laugh underlining her words. L can't find it in her eyes. "Honestly, most of the things you say sound like complete nonsense. There'd be no end to my troubles if I actually took you seriously all the time. I probably know that better than anyone."

All this time, and Light Yagami still loves to hear herself talk. L turns to the railing for a brief second just to conceal her stupid, involuntary smile.

"Yes," she says. "I would say that's a fair assessment."

She should leave, now. Obviously Light will only spend the rest of their time talking in circles. L has far more important things to do, like confirm that Watari has found a death row inmate to test the murder notebook with.

"But I could say the same about you," she continues.

"Hm?" Light frowns. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"You said earlier that" — L has to get this right. Logically this meeting should affect nothing, but it is suddenly the most important case she has ever done. "You were confused."

"That—" Light huffs. "What does that have to do with this?"

L studies her. Studies the odd, jagged edges of Light's haircut, so unlike the rest of her, all carefully picked eyebrows and neat button-up now drenched with rain. L wonders if she discarded the scrunchie now that she no longer has a ponytail, if she's tucked the purple sundress away. If there's anything left of the girl who punched her in the nose and demanded who's the one who swore to send Kira to his execution? and stared at her reflection with a trembling, terrified joy and forgot to hide her vicious grin when she served that final tennis blow.

It's funny. L used to be annoyed by moralizers. She still is.

She wants to save Light Yagami with an emotion so desperate that she wishes she didn't recognize it.

"Ryuzaki," Light says, quiet, prompting. There's a sliver of fear in her eyes.

"Tell me, Light, from the moment you were born, has there ever been a point where you've actually told the truth?"

Light freezes.

For a second, a single second, she looks down. Then back up.

In another universe just a split hair from this one, her eyes are only a flat, blank brown. In that universe she dies Light Yagami, prodigal child, unloving fiance, just another murderer. In that universe her tombstone reads precious son and brother, because even in death she was lying through her teeth.

"Where's this coming from, Ryuzaki?" Light asks, and L seizes onto the almost-inaudible tremble in her voice with both hands.

"What do you think, Light-chan?"

Light flinches. She's out of practice, L thinks, with something that should be glee blossoming in her ribcage. "I told you to stop calling me that."

"You did," L says, keeping her gaze steady.

"What do you want me to say?" Light snaps. "I'm sorry if you feel misled. It was just an experiment. It didn't mean anything. I'm not a girl."

L opens her mouth to say something, then stops. Light's fists are clenched at her sides. Her breaths are angry and fast. November in Japan isn't anywhere close to freezing, but if L focuses long enough she thinks she can see white steam.

Something frantic hums in her bloodstream. Keep her talking.

"I'm not misled," she says. "I'm only curious."

Light's scoff is only barely sanded into a laugh. "Yeah. You're always curious. It's all you know how to be."

"That hurts, Light," L says, plain.

Light flinches again. "What are you doing?"

L glances down at herself, then back up. "Am I disturbing you somehow?"

"Y—No. No, of course not."

Neither of them have moved. There are three paces between them and a hollow grate for the rain to fall through. L wonders if it would give way under their weight.

She won't cross. Can't. L Lawliet is a liar and a thief and at least three detectives, but she does not know how to be anyone but herself.

"…You're acting strange," Light says. "How long have you been standing out here?"

L is fairly sure the concern is not entirely feigned, which makes everything so much worse. "I don't know," she says. "How long have you been running away, Yagami Raito?"

She searches for anger in the set of Light's jaw. Instead Light looks as though she's the one with her back to the railing.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Light says. "I'm right here."

L swallows.

"Perhaps if you came over."

"Ryuzaki," Light says, quiet enough that it's almost a rasp.

I miss you, L doesn't say, because she isn't and will never be the kind of person to say it. You're like a shadow, Light. I always miss you.

"I run away all the time, too," L tells her instead. The rain slides down her skin. "I hide behind the television screen. I'm childish and I hate to lose."

Light is silent.

"I liked your hair long," L says, and it almost sounds exactly the same as usual except that in sheer desperation her voice cracks, and then Light is running and the grate holds beneath her and she crashes into L, 179 centimeters of supernova, and L catches her.

"I hate you," Light says, her eyes blazing, "L, I hate you so much—"

"I know," L says. "I knew from the start—"

Light Yagami kisses the way she throws her punches: with a devastating, furious terror. She has one hand fisted in the neckline of L's shirt, pulling her impossibly closer like she wants to reach into L's ribcage, her mouth the only point of warmth in the downpour around them and startlingly soft. L kisses back. There's no universe where she doesn't. She lifts her hands to cup Light's rain-slick face so very carefully, feels Light shudder into the touch.

She tastes like nothing but water but her lips are slightly chapped. L grazes her lower lip with teeth, the barest contact, and Light makes a sound like oh but significantly softer, and — god, L thinks she loves her.

"This is all your fault," Light says against L's mouth. "This is all your fault."

"Liar," L says, and kisses her again.

I win, she thinks, I win, an undeniable giddiness bubbling in her veins, but it's not victory that makes Light taste so very sweet. L is always, always thinking about the game — it's built into her bones — but these days it's impossible to separate it from the beautiful paradox that is Light Yagami. L doesn't want to. She wants to split Light apart and stare at the way she refracts forever.

"Ryuzaki," Light says, pulling away only a centimeter. Her eyes are blown wide and dark and it takes all of L's self-control to not yank her back in. "I just remembered. I came up here to tell you something."

"Yes, Light?"

"The thirteen-day rule. You wanted to test it."

"Yes."

"Don't." Light swallows; L traces it down the line of her throat. "Don't do it, don't even talk about it in front of the Shinigami. Rem. I think she's dangerous."

"Okay," L says.

"What?" Light blinks. "Just like that?"

"She's hiding something," L says. "It's very obvious. And besides, I'm sure you'd know best."

Light narrows her eyes.

L smiles back at her, guileless. "Anything else, Light-chan?"

"…I think I regret cutting my hair," Light says, barely a whisper.

"It's alright," L says. Kisses her again, just because she can. "It'll grow back."

Okay so I've seen it a few times now and there are people who genuinely believe the Squid Sisters have the least content out of every group. I mean, I get forgetting Deep Cuts but the Squid Sisters do have as much as Off The Hook. Sure, OTH is starting to look like favorites now but the SS aren't left behind. Here's an itemized list:

They're in every main story mode. They have three whole games about them. The concept of story mode revolves around them. Just because they aren't proactive in them doesn't make it not count. Their quips and banter are what made us care and learn about them. It did flesh them out. They don't have to actively help to be main characters and receive development. The only game you could argue that is Splatoon 3 but it has a writing problem in general. It did close their story, subtle but interesting and well-written (for what Splatoon is), across the three games.

A short story. They're the only ones who have that. That has insane development, providing a lot of details about them. Like, that's a MAJOR thing that's lore-dumping so many things.

They're in almost every concert. They're in all but two concerts. They're canon too. This gives them a lot of presence in the franchise.

Lots of illustrations. Makes sense. Of course they are with how long they've been around. Still an important sign that they're a major part of the franchise (obviously, the main story is about them). It's always nice to see them in different situations anyways. They also get some lore out of them, fleshes them out and whatever. Which brings me to my next point.

Different outfits. It's not only giving us a sense of how they dress, but it's telling a story. Said it before but, for example, we know Marie likes dressing up for Story Mode and be a mentor of some sort. If you pull that string, you can get that she's someone who puts on a façade depending on the occasion and likes teaching/guiding people, her idea of mature and cool is a traditional outfit from her hometown.

Special Fest variants. Yes, they all do. However, the thing that differentiates them is that this is outside their game and, even though they were mostly reskins, they did get fully new outfits and hairstyles which neither other groups did.

Technically, they got a DLC. Even if it's the old hub and basically promo for Side Order.

They're in Smash Bros. That's not nothing. They're not spirits, they're full-on assist trophies. They better be in it honestly, but it's still something they have over the other two groups. It solidifies their status in the franchise.

Many songs, including remixes. Obviously, but they're also on the Splatfest list which never happened before outside of special events. They started it in Splatoon 2's Final Fest and started it in Splatoon 3's regular Fests. They're trend setters! Which leads me to...

Boss Fight. Final Boss, even. Callie started it. Literally. She fought us. The fact that she was The Final Boss™ puts her above the others. They wish they were her.

Solos. They did it first. They've also got not one but two mash-ups of their solos so it gotta count. I would argue that theirs are special too as they're meant to be solo pieces while the Anarchy Poisons are always put together be it on the soundtrack or the concerts. They were made to, and it's lovely, as Deep Cut's continuing the trend OTH's set: a united group that values each other and their work over fame. Their music is made to be together. Anarchy Rainbow and its Poisons is just that, something that's all of them, always. They were also fused in every live version, and the in-game live version, unlike Tide Goes Out and Bomb Rush Blush. These were forcefully mashed up as each sang over the other, desperately trying to drown out their will and win this fight. It's only now, years later, that they get an unexpected mash-up, joyful and harmonious —which in a way is a part of their story, them reclaiming this song as they bring their solos together. The Squid Sisters are working for themselves, they now do whatever they want with their careers and what they sing, how they sing, when they sing is up to them and only them.

They're the end credits of every game. Special mention to Splatoon 3 that just sacrifices its own idol group for them. Unlike Splatoon 2, Deep Cut was involved in Story Mode and for all the 10 minutes they spent in it, the end credits should have been theirs as they sure as hell didn't get a DLC. Their equivalent was a last minute addition at that, unceremoniously added later on without much spotlight. Jeez, they could have had a second collab song instead or something!

They've got the final battle song for every game. Makes sense because it's their story and their games, it's the culmination of their work every single time. Unlike the credits, they at least shared the spotlight with Deep Cut... Hey, if Marie's their boss, doesn't that make her a part of their group or vice-versa? She better be, she's the one handling their paperwork after all (poor woman, it's a mess too and they're not spending wisely. Shouldn't have been talking about becoming a manager, Marie, you're getting roped up in too much silliness and Callie won't help).

Participation in 2 Final Fests. By that, I mean actually having a team and representing it. Otherwise, they're involved in every Final Fest.

Merch. I mean why wouldn't they have some?? But it had to be added. Special note for the concert CD and special edition. I guess I'd put there the interview bit Marie conducted in Splatoon 3's soundtrack bonuses. That's another bit of trivia/insight on her work. The Nintendo Magazine interviews also count as they're relevant to their characters.

Their song is a major part of their world and franchise. Calamari Inkantation has a special place in the lore and the franchise. It's THE song but also THEIR song.

4 amiibos. They might not give their outfits (which I kinda like because I'm not fond of how they did it for the others) but they give out gear related to their story, the game, and that we should have gotten. At least they're fixing that flaw I guess.

Storyline during the Splatfests. Not sure if it should be added but it did culminate into long lasting conflict between the two of them and started their storyline. Since it's missing in Splatoon 3, I think it should be noted. It fleshes them out and makes them feel a bit more alive, like they're affected by the results.

Most of these could apply to Off The Hook too. My point is that the Squid Sisters haven't been neglected, not from Nintendo's point of view. They're more than included, arguably the stars of Splatoon 1 and 3. The thing is that Off The Hook is the fan favorite right now so most of our attention is on them, not the others. The Squid Sisters have also been so ingrained in the franchise that we're used to it. We readily accepted they would be the stars of Splatoon 3 because they took over most of Splatoon 2 until Octo Expansion. We assumed the other two groups would get DLCs, or that Deep Cut would be involved in OTH's like in the Main Story, only to realize that Nintendo didn't give a damn and gave the spotlight to OTH alone in an attempt to replicate what Splatoon 2 did. Obviously, once we got over Side Order, we kinda realized this was unfair and that there was favoritism. It didn't help that OTH was featured in regular battles and that Splatoon 2 and 3 handled Splatfests differently, with special events and work done to the idols. We've come a long way since the first game, which itself had changed plenty during its time, so it feels unfair that the Squid Sisters didn't benefit from what the others got or for as long. That doesn't mean they didn't get a lot and weren't the favorites for a long time.

Now, I'm gonna address the thing that made me write this in the first place:

They do have a story and development. Just because it wasn't in your face doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Up until Splatoon 3, the story wasn't as obvious as it could be when it came to the idols. Marina's background is clear-cut, because you cannot be too subtle about it, but apart from some big lines, it wasn't directly stated, nor was her development in Octo Expansion (it's heavily linked to Agent 8 and the Octavian but the fact that she comes to be comfortable in what species she is and overcomes her fear of being found out and rejected should count as a story). She's fascinating and it's important to the world.

But that doesn't leave the Squid Sisters flat and boring. They had an arc! Them slowly resenting each other because of their time as Splatcast anchors, because they were always pit against each other, because of the way being an idol works, is a story in itself. It was bad enough to get Callie to free Octavio, who's a terrible, dangerous person as far as she knew then, and go to the Octarians, poor, underground enemies. The Hypno-Shades are more like heavily suggesting you to obey, we know that Callie had some sort of free will to put glitter, of all things, into their ink. She also was fully conscious of her actions when freeing Octavio, and we know this guy isn't a mastermind and world class manipulator. Marie wasn't doing much better, working a lot and being stressed. Fame drove them apart and broke Callie down to the point of going to people who wanted hers dead. She freed a war criminal. Once Marie saved her, mostly from her own despair, they decided to do their own thing. They didn't need fame or their careers. Family was more important. Tidal Rush was their solos crashing against each other, not listening and trying to sing over the opponent, until Marie blasted on a song that meant the world to them. The hymn of sea kind. The song that they won that fateful contest with when they were young, the reason why their dream came true. The song that they sang when safinf their dear grandpa, powerful enough to make Octolings give up everything and try to join the surface. A beautiful memory. Something that was theirs. And so they sang. Together. "I remember everything!" The innocent days they practiced for the contest, the terrifying ride to Inkopolis, the nervousness of their first Splatcast. But they were together. She wasn't alone. Marie had always been on her side. Neither of them wanted this. If it had been up to them, nobody would have compared them to each other. They wouldn't have been choices for their last Splatfest. It's a certain kind of cruel to ask which of the two teenage girls was the better one. Callie wasn't angry at Marie, she was angry at the system. She felt awkward, self-conscious, worthless because of her status as a celebrity, because she as a person didn't matter. Her comfort? Who cares. Take the photos, sing the songs, be careful to be perfect. She was overworked, isolated, and the only person she could count on was put in the same position and told she was a competitor.

Fresh Start is the two of them reconnecting away from show business. Going back to their roots. They stop being idols afterwards, they don't sing much anymore. They get their own careers. Callie slowly finds the strength to be in the spotlight after so long and goes back to acting, unlike Marie this seems to be more of her thing. Marie keeps on with her podcast, now using it to hype Callie up. Splatoon 3 even shows us that Callie is some sort of spokesperson, announcing that an Inkopolis stage will undergo reconstruction. She's rebuilding her career on her own and making it her own. The Squid Sisters, while some of the most people in the world, weren't recognized in the Splatlands. Sure, Shiver and Frye probably didn't give a damn about Inkopolis musicians but Big Man is a fan, he's even showed them their music, and he still didn't recognize them. They're known for their music, their names possibly for themselves. Splatoon 3 is the only game not to give them a story, even its details don't imply much. But the previous two games did.

It's a story of two girls who got famous too soon, too suddenly, and got eaten by showbusiness. It's two young women taking their power back and breaking free from the idol life. It's a family that managed to heal from the damage fame caused over the years.

I dunno but I think it's beautiful and I'm a sucker for stories that criticize being an idol and family coming together. The Squid Sisters' entire thing was being idols, that's their entire concept, especially identical ones which is dehumanizing enough. It's fitting and not something you'd expect out of Splatoon of all places but it's the kind of franchise that gets surprisingly deep and dark in its smallest details.

No, they're not neglected or underdeveloped. Their story is there, just not as flashy as you'd expect. Their presence is something we're so used to that we don't clock it anymore, moreso when the other group gets attention too. Splatoon 3 didn't handle the writing well, as fun and silly as it gets, and it shows in a lot of ways. It's easy to go "so what was the point of the Squid Sisters being there?" when the story didn't bother doing anything with them for once but they weren't the only one neglected nor did they not get content in other ways!
