This is such a brilliant concept, but the execution is a mess. I am not sure how to avoid this seeming like a stage play with the stationary camera, but directing the actors not to deliver their lines as if they are on a stage would have been a good start. Paul Bettany in particular is in his own private Arthur Miller play — there are no less than four occasions where he walks downstage to deliver a psychologically revealing monologue directly to the audience. There are two ways to go to make this better — only show Tom Hanks’ family or show a lot more scenes of the past so that everything is just a snapshot. I would have gone with more. If this movie has any value, it is the poignancy of the human experience, that we have been having babies and looking at the same moon for millennia.
